    Abstract
    Das Buch macht den Leser mit der Avantgarde der heutigen Forschung bekannt, darunter die Nobelpreisträger. Das Buch gilt als eine Einführung in die wichtigsten wissenschaftlichen Entwicklungen der letzten fünfzehn Jahre. - John Horgan liefert sehr überzeugende Argumente für die Behauptung, daß die besten und aufregendsten wissenschaftlichen Entdeckungen bereits hinter uns liegen. Er stellt fest, daß heutzutage viele Wissenschaftler, besonders die, die er für sein Buch interviewte, "von einem tiefen Unbehagen erfaßt" sind -- zum Teil wegen schwindenden Geldmitteln und erbittertem Wettbewerb, aber auch in zunehmendem Maße aus dem Gefühl heraus, daß "das große Zeitalter der wissenschaftlichen Entdeckungen vorbei ist". Anders ausgedrückt -- so argumentiert er -- die großen Probleme, die gelöst werden können, sind es bereits; und die, die noch nicht gelöst wurden, können es auch nicht werden. Unter den gefeierten Denkern, die in diesem ehrgeizigen Buch zitiert werden, befinden sich Namen wie Stephen Jay Gould, Roger Penrose und John Archibald Wheeler. Seine These wird durch eine präzise Geschichte der wissenschaftlichen Forschung der letzten 20 Jahre eingeleitet und umfaßt Themen wie zum Beispiel die Superstring-Theorie, mathematische Topologie und die Unterscheidung von Chaos und Komplexität. - Interviews mit verschiedenen Personen (S. Weinberg, J. Eccles, N. Chomsky, M. Feigenbaum, I. Prigogine u.a.) zum Thema 'Ende der Wissenschaft'

    Content
    Offene Forschungsdaten tragen zum wissenschaftlichen Fortschritt bei. Sie erlauben es, alte Daten für neue Fragestellungen zu nutzen und Ergebnisse zu überprüfen. Es ist kaum verwunderlich, dass politische Entscheidungsträger, Forschungsförderer, Fachzeitschriften und Forschende selbst zunehmend die Bereitstellung und Nachnutzung von Daten fordern. Allerdings wird dies von Forschenden selbst kaum praktiziert. Wir versuchen die mangelnde Bereitschaft, Forschungsdaten bereitzustellen und nachzunutzen einzuordnen und kommen zu dem Schluss, dass es für Forschende kaum Anreize gibt, Daten zu teilen. Die Nachnutzung scheitert zudem häufig an mangelhafter Datendokumentation.

    Abstract
    Neurochips, schmerzempfindliche neuronale Netze, Norm-Hirne, Gehirntransplantationen: woran die Forschung im Stillen arbeitet, wird morgen uns alle betreffen. Die Hirnforschung schickt sich an, unser Denken und Fühlen, unser Bewußtsein und unsere persönliche Identität naturwissenschaftlich zu erklären. Wenn sich das Gehirn von einem mystisch-mysteriösen Objekt zu einem gewöhnlichen Körperorgan wandelt, wenn es einer Vielzahl von Ein- und Zugriffs-Möglichkeiten ausgesetzt ist, wenn die Neurobiologie zu einer Leitwissenschaft wird - dann ist das von höchster kultureller Brisanz. Also dürfen wir unser 'Zentralorgan' nicht allein den Hirnforschern überlassen. Gemeinsam mit Naturwissenschaftlern und Medizinern müssen sich auch Philosophen, Thheologen, Politiker und Bürger in einer Debatte darüber engagieren, welche ethischen und kulturellen Konsequenzen der Neuroboom in sich birgt

    Abstract
    In ihrem Beitrag stellen die Autoren die Informationslinguistik als Teildisziplin der Informationswissenschaft vor, grenzen sie gegen benachbarte Fächer Theoretische Linguistik, Computerlinguistik und Maschinelle Sprachverarbeitung ab, zeigen aber zugleich auch Gemeinsamkeiten und Überschneidungsbereiche auf. Anwendungsbereiche, Verfahren und Produkte der Informationslinguistik werden in einem kurzen Überblick eingeführt. Einige davon, die im Zentrum der Forschung an der Universität Regensburg stehen, werden unter Bezugnahme auf aktuelle Arbeiten und Forschungsprojekte näher erläutert.

    Abstract
    Die föderalistisch geprägte Struktur des Bibliothekswesens in Deutschland ließ bisher viele Projekte an den Grenzen des eigenen Bundeslandes enden. Die technischen Möglichkeiten des Internets bieten einen besonderen Anreiz, die Vorteile länderübergreifender Zusammenarbeit zu nutzen. Der Beitrag schildert das Zustandekommen der Kooperation der nordrhein-westfälischen und bayerischen Fachhochschulbibliotheken in Bezug auf das gemeinsame, hochschulspezifische Fachinformationsangebot FINT!.
