    Abstract
    In this thesis we propose three new word association measures for multi-word term extraction. We combine these association measures with LocalMaxs algorithm in our extraction model and compare the results of different multi-word term extraction methods. Our approach is language and domain independent and requires no training data. It can be applied to such tasks as text summarization, information retrieval, and document classification. We further explore the potential of using multi-word terms as an effective representation for general web-page summarization. We extract multi-word terms from human written summaries in a large collection of web-pages, and generate the summaries by aligning document words with these multi-word terms. Our system applies machine translation technology to learn the aligning process from a training set and focuses on selecting high quality multi-word terms from human written summaries to generate suitable results for web-page summarization.

    Abstract
    While classifications are heavily used to categorize web content, the evolution of the web foresees a more formal structure - ontology - which can serve this purpose. Ontologies are core artifacts of the Semantic Web which enable machines to use inference rules to conduct automated reasoning on data. Lightweight ontologies bridge the gap between classifications and ontologies. A lightweight ontology (LO) is an ontology representing a backbone taxonomy where the concept of the child node is more specific than the concept of the parent node. Formal lightweight ontologies can be generated from their informal ones. The key applications of formal lightweight ontologies are document classification, semantic search, and data integration. However, these applications suffer from the following problems: the disambiguation accuracy of the state of the art NLP tools used in generating formal lightweight ontologies from their informal ones; the lack of background knowledge needed for the formal lightweight ontologies; and the limitation of ontology reuse. In this dissertation, we propose a novel solution to these problems in formal lightweight ontologies; namely, faceted lightweight ontology (FLO). FLO is a lightweight ontology in which terms, present in each node label, and their concepts, are available in the background knowledge (BK), which is organized as a set of facets. A facet can be defined as a distinctive property of the groups of concepts that can help in differentiating one group from another. Background knowledge can be defined as a subset of a knowledge base, such as WordNet, and often represents a specific domain.

    Abstract
    By the explosion of possibilities for a ubiquitous content production, the information overload problem reaches the level of complexity which cannot be managed by traditional modelling approaches anymore. Due to their pure syntactical nature traditional information retrieval approaches did not succeed in treating content itself (i.e. its meaning, and not its representation). This leads to a very low usefulness of the results of a retrieval process for a user's task at hand. In the last ten years ontologies have been emerged from an interesting conceptualisation paradigm to a very promising (semantic) modelling technology, especially in the context of the Semantic Web. From the information retrieval point of view, ontologies enable a machine-understandable form of content description, such that the retrieval process can be driven by the meaning of the content. However, the very ambiguous nature of the retrieval process in which a user, due to the unfamiliarity with the underlying repository and/or query syntax, just approximates his information need in a query, implies a necessity to include the user in the retrieval process more actively in order to close the gap between the meaning of the content and the meaning of a user's query (i.e. his information need). This thesis lays foundation for such an ontology-based interactive retrieval process, in which the retrieval system interacts with a user in order to conceptually interpret the meaning of his query, whereas the underlying domain ontology drives the conceptualisation process. In that way the retrieval process evolves from a query evaluation process into a highly interactive cooperation between a user and the retrieval system, in which the system tries to anticipate the user's information need and to deliver the relevant content proactively. Moreover, the notion of content relevance for a user's query evolves from a content dependent artefact to the multidimensional context-dependent structure, strongly influenced by the user's preferences. This cooperation process is realized as the so-called Librarian Agent Query Refinement Process. In order to clarify the impact of an ontology on the retrieval process (regarding its complexity and quality), a set of methods and tools for different levels of content and query formalisation is developed, ranging from pure ontology-based inferencing to keyword-based querying in which semantics automatically emerges from the results. Our evaluation studies have shown that the possibilities to conceptualize a user's information need in the right manner and to interpret the retrieval results accordingly are key issues for realizing much more meaningful information retrieval systems.

    Abstract
    Multimodalität ist ein typisches Merkmal der Kommunikation im Social Web. Der Fokus dieses Bandes liegt auf der Kommunikation in Foto-Communitys, insbesondere auf den beiden kommunikativen Praktiken des Social Taggings und des Verfassens von Notizen innerhalb von Bildern. Bei den Tags stehen semantische Text-Bild-Relationen im Vordergrund: Tags dienen der Wissensrepräsentation, eine adäquate Versprachlichung der Bilder ist folglich unabdingbar. Notizen-Bild-Relationen sind aus pragmatischer Perspektive von Interesse: Die Informationen eines Kommunikats werden komplementär auf Text und Bild verteilt, was sich in verschiedenen sprachlichen Phänomenen niederschlägt. Ein diachroner Vergleich mit der Postkartenkommunikation sowie ein Exkurs zur Kommunikation mit Emojis runden das Buch ab.

    Abstract
    In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden die Auswirkungen einer Unternehmenssprache auf den Informationstransfer in der internen Kommunikation internationaler Unternehmen untersucht. Eine Unternehmenssprache ist die von der Unternehmensleitung festgelegte, offizielle Sprache in der internen Kommunikation. Die Arbeit beginnt mit einer Analyse der Aufgaben und Ziele von Sprache, wonach im zweiten Teil das Unternehmen und die interne Kommunikation betrachtet werden. Auf dieser Grundlage werden die Auswirkungen der Unternehmenssprache auf die internen Netzwerke eines Unternehmens untersucht. Netzwerke bilden die Basis zum erfolgreichen Informationstransfer und entstehen durch Kommunikation. Im Unternehmen existieren formelle und informelle Netzwerke, die auf der Kommunikation zwischen Menschen direkt oder über Hilfsmittel sowie auf der Kommunikation zwischen Mensch und Maschine beruhen. Es stellt sich heraus, dass eine Unternehmenssprache positiv auf die Innenbindung der technischen Netzwerkstruktur wirkt. Dadurch ergeben sich Kosten- und Zeitvorteile. Innerhalb der zwischenmenschlichen Netzwerke bildet eine Unternehmenssprache die Basis für das Gelingen einer unternehmensweiten Zusammenarbeit. Synergieeffekte sind zu erwarten, welche die Leistung des Unternehmens steigern. In Bezug auf die Mitarbeiter, deren Muttersprache jedoch nicht die Unternehmenssprache ist, muss mit erheblichen Schwierigkeiten gerechnet werden. Es wird ein Bezug zwischen der Relevanz der beschriebenen Vor- und Nachteile und der Organisationsstruktur hergestellt und Empfehlungen für eine erfolgreiche Umsetzung des Konzepts 'Unternehmenssprache' gegeben.

    Überblick über die Kapitel In Kapitel l. Simple Object Acces Protocol (SOAP) wird zuerst der Hintergrund der Entwicklung von SOAP untersucht. Mit einer kurzen Vorstellung der Entwicklung von verteilter Anwendung bis Web Service wird die Situation dargestellt, dass die vorhandenen Standards wie CORBA, DCOM sowie RMI die Ansprüche der stark heterogenen Umgebung wie Internet nicht erfüllen können. Um diesen Mangel der vorhandenen Lösungen zu überwinden, wurde SOAP mit dem Ziel der Unterstützung des plattformenunabhängigen Nachrichtenaustausches entwickelt. Anschließend wird der Begriff Web Service eingeführt, mit dem SOAP stark verbunden ist. Dabei wird über die Möglichkeit des Einsatzes von SOAP in den Bibliothekssystemen diskutiert. Schließlich wird SOAP durch unterschiedliche Aspekte wie SOAP und XML, SOAP Nachricht, Fehler Behandlung usw. untersucht. In Kapitel 3. Die durch Internet erweiterte Bibliothek wird die Beziehung zwischen dem Internet und der Bibliothek aus zwei Sichten, die verteilte Suche und Metadaten, beschrieben. In dem Teil über die verteilte Suche wird vorwiegend das Protokoll Z39.50, womit die bisherigen verteilten Bibliothekssysteme realisiert werden, dargestellt. In dem Teil der Metadaten wird sich zuerst mit der Bedeutung der Metadaten für die Bibliothek sowie für das Internet auseinandergesetzt. Anschließend wird über die existierenden Probleme der Metadaten und die Lösungsmöglichkeiten diskutiert. Schließlich wird eine Untersuchung einiger Metadatenstandards mit Dublin Core als Schwerpunkt durchgeführt, weil Dublin Core zur Zeit der Standard für das Internet und aus diesem Grund auch fir die Internet bezogene Bibliotheksanwendung wichtig ist. In Kapitel 4. Die Entwicklung eines verteilten Bibliothekssystems mit dem SOAP-Einsatz wird die Entwicklung des praktischen Projektes beschrieben. Zuerst wird das Ziel und die Funktionalität des Projektes festgelegt, dass ein verteiltes Bibliothekssystem mit dem Einsatz von SOAP entwickelt wird und das System eine verteilte Suche auf mehreren entfernten Bibliotheksdatenbanken ermöglichen soll. Anschließend wird beschrieben, in welchen Schritten das System entworfen und implementiert wird. Mit dem ersten System kann man nur in einer Datenbank suchen, während man mit dem zweiten System parallel in zwei Datenbanken suchen kann. Dublin Core wird als der Metadatenstandard im gesamten System eingesetzt. Die im System verwendeten Softwarepakete und die Softwarestandardtechnologien werden vorgestellt. Es wird untersucht, wie einzelne technische Komponenten zusammenarbeiten. Schließlich wird die Entwicklung der einzelnen Programmmodule und die Kommunikation zwischen ihnen beschrieben.

    Abstract
    Wissenschaftliche Bibliotheken werden heutzutage durch Universalsuchmaschinen wie Google bedroht. Ein Grund hierfür ist, dass Bibliotheken auf Rechercheinstrumente setzen die, die heutigen Erwartungen ihrer Nutzer nicht mehr erfüllen können. Wollen Bibliotheken auch zukünftig eine tragende Rolle spielen, müssen sie die Techniken in ihrer Produkte integrieren, die Suchmaschinen zu ihrem Erfolg im Web verholfen haben.

    Abstract
    Der Untersuchungsgegenstand dieser Arbeit umfasst sowohl die theoretischen Konzepte zum Management von Wissen, als auch die Möglichkeit der Integration neuer Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien in den Prozess des Wissensmanagements. Da eine kritische Betrachtung von Wissensmanagementkonzepten ohne der grundsätzlichen Darstellung des ökonomischen Umfeldes, sowie der Klärung der Frage, welche Faktoren die Entstehung von Wissen beeinflussen nicht möglich ist, werden im Rahmen dieser Arbeit auch diese Aspekte betrachtet. In Bezug auf die Integration neuer Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien müssen neben den grundsätzlichen Charakteristika dieser Technologien auch die Bedeutung von Kommunikation und Information im Kontext des ökonomischen Systems, als auch im Kontext von Wissen untersucht werden. Aus der grundsätzlichen Darstellung der Zusammenhänge von Kommunikation und Wissen und der Bedeutung von Wissen für die Wirtschaft lassen sich einige grundlegende Anforderungen an das Management von Wissen stellen, anhand derer das Wissensmanagement untersucht wird. Eine Analyse der Charakteristika neuer Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien und der Bedeutung von Kommunikation für die Wissensgenerierung können Hinweise darauf geben, welche Wissensmanagementkonzepte dem Untersuchungsgegenstand Wissen gerecht werden und welche Relevanz neue Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien im Kontext von Wissensmanagement haben.
    Fragestellung: "Kann man Wissen wie eine Ressource behandeln und managen?" Diese Frage stellt bzw. sollte den Ausgangspunkt jedes Wissensmanagementkonzeptes darstellen und steht aus diesem Grund im Mittelpunkt dieser Arbeit. Anders formuliert könnte man sagen: "Ist der Begriff Wissensmanagement kontradiktorisch?" Stellen Wissensmanagementkonzepte nur einen neuen Managementtrend dar, der alte, wenig erfolgreiche Konzepte (Business Process Reengeneering, TQM, Lean Management, Kaizen) mit neuen Begriffen auffüllt? Was ist Wissen und welche Faktoren begünstigen die Entstehung und den Austausch von Wissen? Welche Bedeutung hat Kommunikation für die Entstehung von Wissen? Wenn Kommunikation einen entscheidenden Faktor für die Entstehung und den Austausch von Wissen hat, inwiefern können Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien im Kontext von Wissensmanagement genutzt werden? Das sind die zentralen Fragen, die ich mir am Anfang und im Verlauf dieser Arbeit gestellt habe. Die Fragestellungen basieren auf sozialwissenschaftlichen Überlegungen, anhand derer das ökonomische Konzept Wissensmanagement untersucht wird. Nachdem Wissen ein soziales Konstrukt ist und die Transformation der knowledge-based economy vor allem von den neuen Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien vorangetrieben und verstärkt wurde, erschien mir die Betrachtung des Managements von Wissen anhand dieser Fragestellungen für zielführend und an der Zeit.

    Abstract
    Diese Diplomarbeit handelt von der Indexierung von unstrukturierten und natürlichsprachigen Dokumenten. Die zunehmende Informationsflut und die Zahl an veröffentlichten wissenschaftlichen Berichten und Büchern machen eine maschinelle inhaltliche Erschließung notwendig. Um die Anforderungen hierfür besser zu verstehen, werden Probleme der natürlichsprachigen schriftlichen Kommunikation untersucht. Die manuellen Techniken der Indexierung und die Dokumentationssprachen werden vorgestellt. Die Indexierung wird thematisch in den Bereich der inhaltlichen Erschließung und des Information Retrieval eingeordnet. Weiterhin werden Vor- und Nachteile von ausgesuchten Algorithmen untersucht und Softwareprodukte im Bereich des Information Retrieval auf ihre Arbeitsweise hin evaluiert. Anhand von Beispiel-Dokumenten werden die Ergebnisse einzelner Verfahren vorgestellt. Mithilfe des Projekts European Migration Network werden Probleme und grundlegende Anforderungen an die Durchführung einer inhaltlichen Erschließung identifiziert und Lösungsmöglichkeiten vorgeschlagen.
