    Abstract
Describes the activities of the National Bibliographic Service, UK, in developing national bibliographies on CD-ROM. The key aims of the project, partly funded by the Commission of the European Communities under its IMPACT programme, are: to promote better and easier access to European and national bibliographies; to promote economies in library cataloguing through improved interchange of bibliographic records between European (and non European) national libraries, irrespective of differing national MARC formats; and to develop shared approaches to strategies, applications and formats for bibliographic data on CD-ROM. Notes the involvement of 7 national libraries and describes: CD-ROM retrieval interface; MARC conversions; character sets; multilingual interface; links to online systems; links to local library systems; menu systems and compatibility; the Pilot CD-ROM database; and framework for exchange of bibliographic records

    Abstract
AGRIS, the International System for Agricultural Sciences and Technology became available on CD-ROM in 1989. In 1992, the AGROVOC thesaurus was added to the CD-ROM database a special searching feature. AGROVOC is a multilingual thesaurus of agricultural terminology, in English, French, Spanish, Italian and German, and is AGRIS's attempt to respond to demands for multilingual access the database. In 1986, AGROVOC became the mandatory indexing tool for AGRIS and replaced the commodity and geographical codes used previously. The thesaurus is divided into 2 main sections: a list of permuted term providing access to the online thesaurus via descriptors and cross references; and a term detail section providing information about relationships between descriptors

    Abstract
This paper presents a proposal for the long-range development of an open, multifunctional, multilingual system for integrated access to many kinds of knowledge about concepts and terminology. The system would draw on existing knowledge bases that are accessible through the Internet or on CD-ROM an on a common integrated distributed knowledge base that would grow incrementally over time. Existing knowledge bases would be accessed through a common interface that would search several knowledge bases, collate the data into a common format, and present them to the user. The common integrated distributed knowledge base would provide an environment in which many contributors could carry out classification and terminological projects more efficiently, with the results available in a common format. Over time, data from other knowledge bases could be incorporated into the common knowledge base, either by actual transfer (provided the knowledge base producers are willing) or by reference through a link. Either way, such incorporation requires intellectual work but allows for tighter integration than common interface access to multiple knowledge bases. Each piece of information in the common knowledge base will have all its sources attached, providing an acknowledgment mechanism that gives due credit to all contributors. The whole system woul be designed to be usable by many levels of users for improved information exchange.

    Abstract
In 1989 a consortium of the national libraries of Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal and the UK agreed to cooperate in investigating the potential of CD-ROMs as a means of distributing and using national bibliographic data. The project, which was divided into 10 manageable sub projects, was launched in Jan 90. One major result is a draft specification of requirements for a common retrieval interface for bibliographic data, designed to match as closely as possible the needs of four user groups: acquisition librarians, cataloguers, reference librarians and end users. A second is the production of a pilot CD-ROM in UNIMARC; The Explorers, containing records from the national bibliographies of Denmark, Italy, Netherlands and Portugal. Other major products are MARC to UNIMARC conversion tables, and a multilingual interface. Valuable if sometimes painful experience was gained during the project

    Abstract
The Institutions of the European Communities produce document-oriented databases based on publications and documents distributed either by the Office for Official Publications of the European Communities or by the individual EC institutions themselves. These databases are known under the names of ABEL, CATEL, CELEX, CORDIS RTD publications, ECLAS, EPOQUE, EURISTOTE, RAPID and SCAD and are available via hosts such as EUROBASES, ECHO and the Office for Official Publications. Until the establishment of the EUROCAT project, no single database held a comprehensive and complete collection of all European Community documents and publications. Describes the work on integrating and harmonising the data from the databases to produce the multilingual EUROCAT database using MS-DOS based software. The resulting database will be available on CD-ROM

    Abstract
With the introduction of the single market, more and more European Community information databases are becoming available either online or on CD-ROM. Some databases are full text but many are bibliographic. Users may access them free text or through controlled descriptors but ideally they should be able to search through 1 or more subject access points. Each of the databases uses a different method and the different subject access methods, employing thesauri or classification schemes, are examined. Proposes a solution to the problem of multiple thesauri and multilingualism

    Abstract
Presents a proposal for the long-range development of an open, multifunctional, multilingual system for integrated access to many kinds of knowledge about concepts and terminology. The system would draw on existing knowledge bases that are accessible through the Internet or on CD-ROM and on a common integrated distributed knowledge base that would grow incrementally over time. Existing knowledge bases would be accessed througha common interface that would search several knowledge bases, collate the data into a common format, and present them to the user. The common integrated distributed knowldge base would provide an environment in which many contributors could carry out classification and terminological projects more efficiently, with the results available in a common format. The whole system would be designed to be usable by many levels of users for improved information exchange.
