    Abstract
The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) has been developed by the academic technical and medical publishing sectors to enable the management of access rights to information published electronically. The DOI system has evolved from the physical documentary unit identifiers developed in the 1970, physical and document logical unit identifiers developed in the 1980s and recently modified to meet the needs of electronic distribution. This experience is integrated into the standardization, currently in progress on the Internet network, of the identification of resources and their localization. The DOI system is potentially the object of an international standard as the ISBN and the ISSN have been

    Abstract
French library presence on the Internet includes the National Library of France (BNF), universities, major research establishments and some large public libraries. Smaller public libraries are beginning to appear, usually as part of the parent institution's site. Content usually consists of information about the library, with links to related sites. Few libraries offer catalogues. Internet addresses are given for library and library related sites discussed

    Abstract
Considers how Intranets are being developed by adapting Internet technologies. Discusses the Internet technologies of data transport, file transfer, massage exchange, and information and document dissemination on the Web and explains how these may be implemented within an organization. Documentation professionals may use these techniques to improve the circulation of information within a company and increase the accumulation of knowledge

    Abstract
Since Sep 1997 the catalogue of the French National Museum of Modern Art's documentation collection has been on the Internet. The original intention was to expand its function as a local collection management tool, and provide a worldwide reference source, using Z39.50. The process highlighted the catalogue's imperfection (local variations, exploded records). Future developments include an English version, refinement of the home pages and an updating programme. So far the impact is unclear, but this should eventually provide a basis for international cooperation

    Abstract
The Internet links computer networks worldwide through the TCP/IP; in addition to electronic mail; bulleton board and news group services, files can be downloaded using the standard protocol FTP. Services have evolved to identify and facilitate access to Internet resources, e.g. Telnet, Gopher, WAIS, etc. The WWW is the most developed, using hypertext links. Search engines such as AltaVista explore Web content and create catalogues of Web pages. Gives details of the most commonly used subject guides, research tools and search engines, including URL and applications

    Abstract
Digital documents and Internet access are changing cataloguing practices. MARC formats can accomodate Internet documents by assigning a field for URL but quality control is vital, especially with multimedia catalogues, and new links have to be created. Heterogeneous distant resources can now be searches using the Z39.50 standard, thus enabling access to a wide range of diverse catalogues, and Internet formats are being used to create local systems (intranets). The librarian needs new skills to manipulate digital documents and use information technology tool but the mission is the same: to optimise access to the widest possible range of information

    Abstract
Examines the responsibilities and obligations of libraries in an electronic environment. These include: ensuring access, mostly free, to the Internet; training the public to use it; developing research and navigational tools; using the Internet as a gateway; participating in the organization of data; providing access to the documentary heritage; collection development; forging links with other database producers; providng a forum for dissemination projects; speaking out against censorship; and involving users and the local community in the development of databases

    Abstract
The National Library of France (BNF) database, BN-OPALINE, initially developed for computerising the specialised departments' catalogues, has functioned since 1996 as the database for all BNF documents. Accessible on the Internet, notices are in INTERMARC format, with over 500.000 references covering specialised documents, microforms and documents acquired by partner libraries. Eventually BNF-OPALINE will be integrated into the future BNF multimedia information system and form part of the French joint catalogue

    Abstract
Account of a limited experimental study at the Bibliothèque Publique d'Informations (BPI), the Paris multimedia public library, to establish a methodology for investigating user interactions with new technology. A wide range of materials are available at the BPI, including CD-ROMs and the Internet. Preliminary observations indicate that users do not follow the pattern dictated by the machine, but take approaches based on their own experience and skills. Setbacks are generally interpreted as defects in the software, not personla failure to master the system. Large scale qualitative abservation, using research methods from the social sciences, would establish a knowledge base for developing user skills to exploit multimedia resources more fully

    Abstract
Secondary information, e.g. MARC based bibliographic records, comprises structured data for identifying, tagging, retrieving and management of primary documents. SGML, the standard format for coding content and structure of primary documents, was introduced in 1986 as a publishing tool but is now being applied to bibliographic records. SGML now comprises standard definitions (DTD) for books, serials, articles and mathematical formulae. A simplified version (HTML) is used for Web pages. Pilot projects to develop SGML as a standard for bibliographic exchange include the Dublin Core, listing 13 descriptive elements for Internet documents; the French GRISELI programme using SGML for exchanging grey literature and US experiments on reformatting USMARC for use with SGML-based records

    Abstract
Creating a digital collection of graphic documents raises policy, legal and technical issues. Documents should be selected according to overall documentation policy criteria (value, preservation, exploitation) and meet a real need. The objectives must be clear, e.g. to improve access, widen communication, conserve originals. Technical questions e.g. whether to use originals or photos, text or image scanner, need to be resolved. Cataloguing and indexing involves decisions about the relationship between the digital copy and the original. Copyright legislation may mean only public domain material can be used. Finally the needs of unknown external users have to be considered in making the documents available on the Internet

    Abstract
Users who want to exploit all the information sources on the Web will need an efficient search and selection tool e.g. a directory or search engine. Directories list Web sites and analyze their contents. Describes the behind-the-scenes work of documentalists specialized in surfing, tracking and indexing French language sites for the directory Nomade. Describes the creation of Nomade, its functioning and indexing, and how this new profession of 'cyber-documentalist' is changing the practices and functions of information professionals as they become Internet information organizers
