Abstract

This paper reviews issues related to the cataloging of Internet resources and considers shortand long-term directions for cataloging and the general provision of library services for remotely accessible, electronic information resources. The strengths and weakness of using a library catalog model to improve access to Internet resources are discussed and compared with a review of related efforts. Based on experience gained through two OCLC Internet cataloging projects, the authors recommend continued and vigorous appplication of library cataloging standards and methods for Internet resources with the expectation that catalogs, cataloging, and libraries in general will continue to evolve.

Abstract

Erschließung und Nachweis von Internetquellen sind ein zentraler Bestandteil der Virtuellen Fachbibliotheken (ViFa), die seit ca. 8 Jahren von den Sondersammelgebietsbibliotheken aufgebaut und von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) gefördert werden. Mittlerweile wird deutlich, dass allein stehende Lösungen für eine ViFa in der Regel nicht nachhaltig aufrechterhalten werden können. Zu groß ist der Aufwand für die Erschließung und Pflege von Internetquellen. Auch die Förderung durch die DFG wird stärker von kooperativen Lösungen abhängig gemacht. Academic LinkShare ist ein Netzwerk von Bibliotheken, das eine kooperative technische und organisatorische Infrastruktur zur Erfassung und zum Nachweis von Internetquellen entwickelt hat. Im Zentrum steht dabei ein gemeinsamer Datenpool, der von Bibliotheken im Fachcluster Wirtschafts-, Sozial-, Geistes- und Regionalwissenschaften aufgebaut wird. Durch den kooperativen Nachweis der Internetquellen werden Ressourcen bei der Katalogisierung eingespart. Andererseits ist nach dem Motto "Metadata Sharing: Zentrale Erschließung - Dezentrale Präsentation" jede Institution frei in der Gestaltung der Präsentationsebene ihrer Internetquellen. Vor dem Hintergrund eines vergleichsweise hohen Überschneidungsgrads fachlich relevanter Quellen in benachbarten Disziplinen - er liegt bei den institutionellen Quellen im Verbund bei ca. 30 % - ermöglicht die kooperative Erschließung mit dem Modell des "Metadata Sharing" den effizienten Einsatz von Ressourcen. Durch die Verantwortlichkeit der Verbundpartner für ihre Präsentationen kann das jeweils eigene Profil gestärkt werden. Darüber hinaus nutzen die Verbundpartner Academic LinkShare für den Wissens- und Erfahrungsaustausch. Auch hier ergeben sich Synergieeffekte durch den Austausch von Ideen und die Nachnutzung von Modulen.
