    Abstract
    Der provokante Titel war gleichzeitig Name und Programm einer gut besuchten Po-diumsdiskussion der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek, angeregt durch die Bestrebungen, die Katalogisierungsregeln in Deutschland zu reformieren. Die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer der Podiumsrunde machten mit ihren Diskussionsbeiträgen schnell klar, daß die Frage nur rhetorisch gemeint sein konnte. Unumstritten ist der Zwang zu Veränderungen, bewirkt durch den technischen Fortschritt einerseits und den Kostendruck andererseits. Bei der Frage, welche Veränderungen notwendig sind, gingen die Meinungen allerdings ziemlich auseinander. Aus dem sich rege an der Diskussion beteiligenden Auditorium kam Kritik an den Normdateien, speziell der Personen-namendatei (PND) und vor allem an der Gemeinsamen Körperschaftsdatei (GKD) als dem arbeitsaufwendigsten und teuersten Katalogisierungsinstrument überhaupt.

    Abstract
    Das Phänomen der Globalisierung betrifft zunehmend auch die bibliothekarische WeIt. Parallel zu den derzeit geführten Diskussionen über die Anpassung von internationalen Regelwerken und Austauschformaten wächst auch der Wunsch, fremdsprachige Katalogisate zumindest teilweise in Originalschrift eingeben zu können. Dieses Bestreben wird noch dadurch gefördert, dass in zunehmenden Maße die Voraussetzungen auf technischer Ebene gewährleistet werden. Zum einen sind nun die Windows-Betriebssysteme NT / 2000 / XP "unicodefähig", zum anderen unterstützt auch die neue Generation der integrierten Bibliothekssysteme immer öfter den Unicode-Standard, der für alle Schriftzeichen weltweit eine eindeutige Codierung vorsieht. Diese wachsende Akzeptanz des Unicode-Standards und die Verfügbarkeit unterstützender Programme zählen übrigens zu den bedeutendsten weltweiten Trends in der gegenwärtigen Softwaretechnologie. Auch im MAB-Ausschuss (MAB ist das Maschinelle Austauschformat für Bibliotheken) wurde diesen Entwicklungen Rechnung getragen und ein neues MAB-Feld zur Darstellung von Originalschrift und Umschrift bei der Verwendung von Unicode / ISO 10646 geschaffen. Ersten diesbezüglichen Überlegungen im November 2001 folgte ein Entwurf für ein neues MABFeld 671 der erst unlängst (Februar 2004) freigegeben wurde. Die aktualisierte MAB2 Online-Kurzreferenz-Version kann unter ftp://ftp.ddb.de~ pubtmab/erw-mab txt eingesehen werden. Für den Österreichischen Bibliothekenverbund bedeutete der Releasewechsel auf die ALEPH 500 Version 14.2 (Sommer 2001) die Möglichkeit, Unicode im vollen Umfang nutzen zu können. Vor allem die Fachbereichsbibliothek für Ostasienwissenschaften an der Universität Wien zeigte in der Folge nachdrückliches Interesse daran, japanische und koreanische Originalschriften in den Verbundkatalog einbringen zu können. Die aus diesem Anlass vorgenommene und im folgenden beschriebene Implementierung nutzen mittlerweile auch die Fachbereichsbibiiothek für Byzantinistik und Neogräzistik an der Universität Wien (Griechisch) sowie demnächst die Bibliothek des jüdischen Museums Wien (Hebräisch).

    Abstract
    Im Jahr 2007 hat die GWLB gemeinsam mit der HAAB, der Universitätsbibliothek Johann Christian Senckenberg und mehreren Stiftungen die Königliche Gartenbibliothek Herrenhausen erworben. Neben den textuellen Materialien enthält die Bibliothek auch viele nicht-textuelle Materialien wie Herbarien, Zeichnungen und auch Gouachen mit Abbildungen von Obstsorten aus der ehemaligen Obstbaumplantage. Diese Gouachen in Mappen liegend bei der GWLB aufbewahrt. Die einzelnen Blätter tragen keine Titel, sondern sind am unteren Rand mit Bleistift durchnummeriert. Ohne die beigefügte ebenfalls durchnummerierte Liste mit Sortennamen ist keine eindeutige Zuordnung und die Nutzung somit nur eingeschränkt möglich. Die Überlegung zu einer digitalen Präsentation liegt daher nahe, denn "der ungehinderte Zugang zu elektronischen wissenschaftlich relevanten Publikationen von jedem Ort aus und zu jeder Zeit spielt in der digitalen Informationsgesellschaft eine immer bedeutendere Rolle." Oder um es drastischer zu formulieren: "Was nicht im Web ist, ist nicht in der Welt". Bevor jedoch mit der Digitalisierung begonnen werden kann, müssen einige Fragen vorab geklärt werden. Im Folgenden werden Kriterien, die bei der Planung und Durchführung von Digitalisierungsprojekten zu beachten sind, behandelt.
