    Abstract
    Der Aufbau der Europäischen Digitalen Bibliothek wurde im Herbst 2007 auf soliden Grund gestellt: Mit der European Digital Library Foundation steht eine geschäftsfähige Organisation als Trägerin der Europäischen Digitalen Bibliothek zur Verfügung. Sie fungiert zunächst als Steuerungsgremium für das EU-finanzierte Projekt EDLnet und übernimmt sukzessive die Aufgaben, die für den Aufbau und die Weiterentwicklung der Europäischen Digitalen Bibliothek notwendig sind. Die Gründungsmitglieder sind zehn europäische Dachorganisationen aus den Bereichen Bibliothek, Archiv, audiovisuelle Sammlungen und Museen. Vorstandsmitglieder sind die Vorsitzende Elisabeth Niggemann (CENL) die Vize-Vorsitzende Martine de Boisdeffre (EURBICA), der Schatzmeister Edwin van Huis (FIAT) sowie Wim van Drimmelen, der Generaldirektor der Koninklijke Bibliotheek, der Nationalbibliothek der Niederlande, welche die Europäische Digitale Bibliothek hostet. Der Prototyp für die Europäische Digitale Bibliothek wird im Rahmen des EDLnet-Projekts entwickelt. Die erste Version des Prototyps wurde auf der internationalen Konferenz »One more step towards the European Digital Library« vorgestellt, die am 31. Januar und 1. Februar 2008 in der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek (DNB) in Frankfurt am Main stattfand. Die endgültige Version des Prototyps wird im November 2008 von der EU-Kommissarin für Informationsgesellschaft und Medien, Viviane Reding, in Paris vorgestellt werden. Dieser Prototyp wird direkten Zugang zu mindestens zwei Mio. digitalisierten Büchern, Fotografien, Karten, Tonaufzeichnungen, Filmaufnahmen und Archivalien aus Bibliotheken, Archiven, audiovisuellen Sammlungen und Museen Europas bieten.

    Darin u.a. "Interoperabilität als Kernstück - Technische und semantische Interoperabilität bilden somit das Kernstück für das Funktionieren der Europäischen Digitalen Bibliothek. Doch bevor Wege gefunden werden können, wie etwas funktionieren kann, muss zunächst einmal festgelegt werden, was funktionieren soll. Hierfür sind die Nutzeranforderungen das Maß aller Dinge, weshalb sich ein ganzes Arbeitspaket in EDLnet mit der Nutzersicht, den Nutzeranforderungen und der Nutzbarkeit der Europäischen Digitalen Bibliothek befasst, Anforderungen formuliert und diese im Arbeitspaket »Interoperabilität« umgesetzt werden. Für die Entscheidung, welche Inhalte wie präsentiert werden, sind jedoch nicht allein technische und semantische Fragestellungen zu klären, sondern auch ein Geschäftsmodell zu entwickeln, das festlegt, was die beteiligten Institutionen und Organisationen in welcher Form zu welchen Bedingungen zur Europäischen Digitalen Bibliothek beitragen. Auch das Geschäftsmodell wird Auswirkungen auf technische und semantische Interoperabilität haben und liefert die daraus abgeleiteten Anforderungen zur Umsetzung an das entsprechende Arbeitspaket. Im EDLnet-Projekt ist somit ein ständiger Arbeitskreislauf installiert, in welchem die Anforderungen an die Europäische Digitale Bibliothek formuliert, an das Interoperabilitäts-Arbeitspaket weitergegeben und dort umgesetzt werden. Diese Lösung wird wiederum an die Arbeitspakete »Nutzersicht« und »Geschäftsmodell« zurückgemeldet, getestet, kommentiert und für die Kommentare wiederum technische Lösungen gesucht. Dies ist eine Form des »rapid prototyping«, das hier zur Anwendung kommt, d. h. die Funktionalitäten werden schrittweise gemäß des Feedbacks der zukünftigen Nutzer sowie der Projektpartner erweitert und gleichzeitig wird der Prototyp stets lauffähig gehalten und bis zur Produktreife weiterentwickelt. Hierdurch verspricht man sich ein schnelles Ergebnis bei geringem Risiko einer Fehlentwicklung durch das ständige Feedback."

    Abstract
    From 4 to 6 June 2003 the 2nd European Library Seminar / 3rd Gabriel Workshop was held at the Biblioteca Nacional in Lisbon, Portugal. 62 librarians and webmasters from 20 countries participated in the workshop, mainly Gabriel contacts but also quite a number of librarians from Portugal. Since its foundation in 1995 Gabriel, the world wide web service of the European national libraries, has established itself as the official network service of the Conference of European National Librarians (CENL) and has undergone a continuous development. The Gabriel website has been redesigned and restructured, and it was relaunched in summer 2002. At present, 41 libraries from 39 European countries are represented in Gabriel. Gabriel offers access to varied information sources and numerous online-catalogues and Services of the European national libraries. Gabriel is the only trans-European library service.

    Abstract
    Der Aufbau der Europäischen Digitalen Bibliothek, der Europeana, wie sie inzwischen heißt, ist eingebettet in verschiedene Aktivitäten und Initiativen der Europäischen Kommission, die bereits 2005 gestartet wurden. Im Folgenden soll die Entwicklung seit der am 30. September 2005 veröffentlichten Mitteilung nachgezeichnet und ein Überblick über die Aktivitäten insbesondere der Nationalbibliotheken gegeben werden.

Dies soll durch Tests von volltextindexierungsverfahren einerseits und automatischen Vokabularmappings andererseits erreicht werden." "Fazit: Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass die »i2010 Digital Libraries«-Initiative der Europäischen Kommission Früchte trägt: Es ist gelungen, die Themen Digitalisierung, Zugänglichkeit und Langzeiterhaltung von digitalen Objekten auf die politische Agenda der EU-Mitgliedsstaaten zu bringen. In den Mitgliedsstaaten werden nationale Digitalisierungsstrategien und -programme entwickelt und Digitalisierung findet statt. Die auf nationaler Ebene entstehenden Portale, die Zugänge zum digitalen kulturellen Erbe ermöglichen, werden durch Aktivitäten auf europäischer Ebene flankiert. Problemfelder wie der Umgang mit verwaisten Werken und mit vergriffenen Werken sowie andere urheberrechtliche Fragen werden angegangen und konkrete Richtlinien erarbeitet, die national diskutiert werden. Mit The European Library existiert ein funktionsfähiger europäischer Service, der ohne Drittmittel finanziert wird und zusammen mit anderen europäischen Initiativen wie MICHAEL wichtige Bausteine für die Europeana liefert, den Zugang zum europäischen Kulturerbe in einem multinationalen, multikulturellen, multilingualen und multimedialen Umfeld. Man darf auf den Prototyp, den Viviane Reding im November 2008 vorstellen wird, gespannt sein."

    Abstract
    Mehr als 130 gleichzeitig durchsuchbare Kataloge und Sammlungen sowie Links zu rund 80 digitalen Sammlungen von 19 europäischen Nationalbibliotheken, das ist das aktuelle Angebot von The European Library. Darüber hinaus bietet dieses Portal der Konferenz der Europäischen Nationalbibliothekare (Conference of European National Librarians, CENL) umfassende Informationen zu den 45 europäischen Nationalbibliotheken aus 43 Ländern, die in CENL vertreten sind. The European Library ist aus dem gleichnamigen, von der Europäischen Union (EU) teilfinanzierten Projekt hervorgegangen, das im Februar 2004 erfolgreich abgeschlossen und danach in den Echtbetrieb überführt wurde. Unter dem Dach der CENL wird The European Library an der Königlichen Bibliothek in Den Haag von einem Team weiterentwickelt und gepflegt, das aus sieben Personen besteht. Finanziert wird dieser Service von den europäischen Nationalbibliotheken: von den derzeit 19 Vollmitgliedern von The European Library sowie mit einem Teil des CENL-Jahresbeitrags aller Nationalbibliotheken. Mittelfristiges Ziel ist, alle CENL-Bibliotheken als Vollmitglieder in den Service von The European Library einzubinden, das heißt alle Kataloge und Sammlungen aller 45 Bibliotheken integriert suchbar zu machen.

    Abstract
    The Europeana, the European digital library web-service, is being developed in the framework of the EU-funded network EDLnet. The demo version of this webservice was shown at an international conference at the German National Library in Frankfurt on 1 February 2008, the prototype will be launched in November 2008. In November 2007 the EDL Foundation was established to provide cross-domain multilingual access to Europe's cultural heritage. It will facilitate formal agreement across museums, archives, audio-visual archives and libraries on how to cooperate in the delivery and sustainability of a joint portal and will provide a legal framework for use by the EU for funding purposes and as a springboard for future governance. The European Commission is supporting the process towards the Europeana with a set of projects centering on The European Library. This webservice created by the European national libraries is seen as one of the major building blocks of the Europeana.
