    Abstract
Web search engines generally use best match search techniques, rather than traditional Boolean operators. Precision in searching will depend on the numbers of selected terms appearing in a document and the inclusion of less-common words in the search string. Users are, therefore, recommended to enter as many words as possible. ExCite and WebCrawler lead users from a relevant document to other documents containing similar word patterns, while MusCat and EuroFerret suggest additional keywords for searching

    Abstract
1st in a series or reports by the IRT (Internet Retrieval Tools) Working Party in the Netherlands. The group was formed at the start of 1997 to attempt to identify which search engines were most suitable for different ypes of enquiries. Compilers of search engines frequently give little information about the data covered by their service and how their service deals with metadata. Preliminary tests show considerable variations in approach; future tests will examine the use of ranking and currency of systems

    Abstract
The Northern Light Internet search engine was inaugurated in Aug 1997. The service differs from existing services in that it classifies search results in a set of custom search folders and for a modest fee provides access to a range of bibliographical resources not normally available via the Web. Paymant may be made online via a simple transaction. The custom search folders enable users to refine searches more easily than with other search engines. However, the search commands to not permit truncated or wild card searches

    Abstract
Despite development of the WWW searchers still experience difficulties following links between sites and cannot be sure that a site contains the required information. 3 software programs developed to guide users through the maze of hyperlinks are: Dynamic diagrams, the Hyperbolic tree, and the Brain. in contrast to the other programs which operate on webservers and display hyperlinks in diagrammatic form the Brain is installed on individual PCs and can be customised to meet users' requirements
