    Abstract
    The employees of an organization often use a personal hierarchical classification scheme to organize digital documents that are stored on their own workstations. As this may make it hard for other employees to retrieve these documents, there is a risk that the organization will lose track of needed documentation. Furthermore, the inherent boundaries of such a hierarchical structure require making arbitrary decisions about which specific criteria the classification will b.e based on (for instance, the administrative activity or the document type, although a document can have several attributes and require classification in several classes).A faceted classification model to support corporate information organization is proposed. Partially based on Ranganathan's facets theory, this model aims not only to standardize the organization of digital documents, but also to simplify the management of a document throughout its life cycle for both individuals and organizations, while ensuring compliance to regulatory and policy requirements.

    Abstract
    We have created software applications that allow users to both author and use Semantic Web metadata. To create and use a layer of semantic content on top of the existing Web, we have (1) implemented a user interface that expedites the task of attributing metadata to resources on the Web, and (2) augmented a Web browser to leverage this semantic metadata to provide relevant information and tasks to the user. This project provides a framework for annotating and reorganizing existing files, pages, and sites on the Web that is similar to Vannevar Bushrsquos original concepts of trail blazing and associative indexing.

    Abstract
    Dieser Aufsatz beschäftigt sich mit den Grundsätzen der Informationsarchitektur im World Wide Web. Es werden die Faktoren dargestellt, die bei der Planung der Informationsarchitektur einer Website bedacht werden sollten. Sie erleichtern es dem Nutzer, Information zu finden und aufzunehmen. Eine Voraussetzung ist, die Struktur in der Konzeptionsphase zu optimieren, um eine nutzerfreundliche, erfolgreiche Website zu gestalten. Darüber hinaus werden Kriterien für die Navigation und das Labelsystem beschrieben, auf die Problematik der Suchfunktion eingegangen und das komplexe Thema der Metadaten und kontrollierten Vokabulare angerissen.

    Abstract
    So lautet der Titel einer Studie, die im Auftrag der Konferenz für Regelwerksfragen und mit Unterstützung des Deutschen Bibliotheksinstituts zwischen Dezember 1998 und Januar 2000 von der Arbeitsgruppe Klassifikatorische Erschließung verfasst wurde. Auftrag dieser Arbeitsgruppe, in der die deutschen Bibliotheksverbünde, das öffentliche Bibliothekswesen, Die Deutsche Bibliothek, ein Experte aus dem Fachhochschulbereich und Gäste aus Österreich und der Schweiz vertreten waren, sollte die Weiterentwicklung der Vorschläge sein, die in dem im September 1998 vorgelegten Gutachten "Klassifikationen für wissenschaftliche Universalbibliotheken in Deutschland" für die Verwendung von Klassifikationen gemacht wurden. Dabei war es das Ziel, die dort ausgesprochene Empfehlung der Dewey-Dezimalklassifikation (DDC) für die Zwecke der nationalbibliographischen Erschließung auf ihre praktische Umsetzbarkeit in näherer Zukunft hin zu überprüfen und Wege aufzuzeigen, sie mit anderen, z.B. für die Freihand-Aufstellung genutzten Klassifikationen (das Gutachten empfiehlt hierfür die Regensburger Verbundklassifikation), aber auch mit der für die verbale Sacherschließung eingeführten, auf den Regeln für den Schlagwortkatalog (RSWK) basierenden Schlagwortnormdatei (SWD) zu verknüpfen. Die für eine solche Machbarkeitsstudie zur Verfügung stehende Zeit war knapp bemessen. Nicht nur die bevorstehende Auflösung des Deutschen Bibliotheksinstituts und die damit verbundenen grundsätzlichen Veränderungen in der bisherigen Gremienarbeit ließen es notwendig erscheinen, bis zum Beginn des Jahres 2000 Arbeitsergebnisse vorzulegen. Auch die Nachfrage in der bibliothekarischen Offentlichkeit nach einem allgemein akzeptierten klassifikatorischen Verfahren in Ergänzung zu der durch den punktuellen Zugriff über das enge Schlagwort nicht immer befriedigenden verbalen Erschließung mit RSWK hat sich in den letzten Jahren verstärkt und verlangte nach schnell realisierbaren Lösungen. Nicht zuletzt hat die rasche Verbreitung elektronischer Publikationen und das unendliche, aber mit den herkömmlichen Suchmaschinen nur zweifelhaft erschlossene Angebot im World Wide Web dafür gesorgt, dass das Bedürfnis nach allgemein akzeptierten, zuverlässigen und weltweit verbreiteten, also auch nicht an eine Sprache gebundenen Instrumenten für die sachliche Recherche gewachsen ist. Wenn Deutschland hier den Anschluss nicht verlieren und seine wissenschaftlich relevanten Web-Texte ebenso wie die herkömmlichen gedruckten Publikationen international nutzbar machen will, bietet sich die DDC als die in Nationalbibliographien wie im Internet am meisten verwendete Universalklassifikation an

    Abstract
    Ziel des Forschungsprojektes MedioVis, das in enger Kooperation mit der Bibliothek der Universität Konstanz durchgeführt wird, ist die Realisierung einer innovativen visuellen Benutzungsschnittstelle zur analytischen Suche und zum interessengeleiteten Stöbern im Katalog der Konstanzer "Mediothek". Deren elektronische und multimediale Titel (z.B. Videoaufzeichnungen, DVD, Tonträger, CD-ROM) sind ein bedeutsamer Bestandteil des Serviceangebots der Bibliothek der Universität Konstanz, der gerade in dem Bereich der Theater-, Film- und Medienwissenschaften, aber auch in der Fremdsprachenausbildung oder zu Unterhaltungszwecken intensiv von Studenten, Lehrpersonen und Wissenschaftlern genutzt wird. MedioVis leistet dabei einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Verbesserung und Erweiterung der nutzerorientierten Dienstleistungen, indem dem Bibliotheksnutzer nicht nur ein effizientes Suchen, sondern auch ein interessengeleitetes Stöbern im Katalog mittels spezieller Visualisierungen und neuartigen Interaktionskonzepten ermöglicht wird. Dabei wird er von der ersten Eingrenzung des Katalogs bis zur Selektion des gewünschten Titels begleitet, wobei zur Entscheidungsunterstützung eine Anreicherung mit ergänzenden Metadaten aus dem World Wide Web stattfindet. Das Projekt wird dabei von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) im Förderprogramm für Wissenschaftliche Literaturversorgungs- und Informationssysteme gefördert, um somit die Schaffung eines für andere Bibliotheken frei verfügbaren und nachnutzbaren Systems zu unterstützen und dieses unter Realbedingungen zu testen. Zu diesem Zweck wird MedioVis von der UB Konstanz seit dem Sommer 2004 im operativen Testbetrieb auf Arbeitsplätzen innerhalb der Mediothek angeboten. Die Motivation für das Projekt MedioVis erwuchs aus Gesprächen mit Benutzern und deren Beobachtung bei der Verwendung des traditionellen bibliographischen Webkatalogs bzw. OPACs "KOALA", der gerade für die Domäne "Film" in den Augen der Befragten nur wenig geeignet war. Als Hauptproblem erwies sich dabei, dass die Entscheidungsunterstützung bei der Filmrecherche für den Benutzer durch einen traditionellen bibliographischen Katalog nur unzureichend ist

    "Wissenschaftler brauchen fundierte Informationen aus Quellen, auf die man sich verlassen kann. Die Suche nach solchen Quellen, wissenschaftlichen Aufsätzen, Dissertationen, Büchern, Datenbanken und Linklisten gestaltete sich bislang schwierig: Bibliotheken oder Verlage von Fachzeitschriften mussten einzeln angesteuert werden, einen zentralen, einheitlichen und einfachen Zugang gab es bislang, nicht. Das soll sich jetzt ändern: Das vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) und von der Deutschen; Forschungsgemeinsehaft (DFG) geförderte Internetportal "vascoda", das nach dem Willen seiner Initiatoren auch Grundbaustein für die "Digitale Bibliothek Deutschland" sein soll, will Forschern Zugang zu wissenschaftlicher Information unterschiedlichster Fachrichtungen und unterschiedlichster Formate bieten. Das ist bundesweit in dieser Form ebenso einzigartig wie die Tatsache, dass die an vascoda angeschlossenen Datenbanken ausschließlich ;,geprüfte" Informationen liefern sollen: "Fachbibliothekare und Fachwissenschaftler der Anbieter, die sich unter dem vascoda-Dach zusammengeschlossen haben, prüfen, welche Texte vdrfügbar gemacht werden", sagt Christine Burblies von der vascoda-Geschäftsstelle in Hannover. "So können wir gewährleisten, dass die Informationen wissenschaftlichen Ansprüchen genügen." Das macht dann auch den wesentlichen Unterschied zu anderen Suchmaschinen aus: Die Suchmaske des Wissenschaftsportals ist zwar ähnlich einfach zu handhaben wie die Internet-Suchmaschine Google - vascoda verirrt sich aber nicht im World Wide Web. Und während andere Internet-Suchmaschinen nicht den Zugriff auf das so genannte "invisible web" bieten, also beispielsweise auf Bibliothekskataloge, ermöglicht vascoda auch den Zugriff auf dieses unsichtbare Netz. Das Wissenschaftsportal ist unentgeltlich nutzbar, und auch ein Großteil der Informationen ist kostenlos zu beziehen.     Abstract
    The relationship between the methods currently used for indexing the World Wide Web and the programs, languages, and protocols on which the World Wide Web is based is examined. Two methods for indexing the Web are described, directories being briefly discussed while search engines are considered in detail. The automated approach used to create these tools is examined with special emphasis on the parts of a document used in indexing. Shortcomings of the approach are described.     Abstract
    Many Web sites have begun allowing users to submit items to a collection and tag them with keywords. The folksonomies built from these tags are an interesting topic that has seen little empirical research. This study compared the search information retrieval (IR) performance of folksonomies from social bookmarking Web sites against search engines and subject directories. Thirty-four participants created 103 queries for various information needs. Results from each IR system were collected and participants judged relevance. Folksonomy search results overlapped with those from the other systems, and documents found by both search engines and folksonomies were significantly more likely to be judged relevant than those returned by any single IR system type. The search engines in the study had the highest precision and recall, but the folksonomies fared surprisingly well. Del.icio.us was statistically indistinguishable from the directories in many cases. Overall the directories were more precise than the folksonomies but they had similar recall scores. Better query handling may enhance folksonomy IR performance further. The folksonomies studied were promising, and may be able to improve Web search performance.

    Abstract
    The German information science community - with the support of the two main funding agencies in Germany - will develop a scientific portal, vascoda, for cross-searching distributed metadata collections. In platitudinous words, one of the services of vascoda is going to be a ldquoGooglerdquo-like search for the academic community, an easy to use, yet sophisticated search-engine to supply information on high-quality resources from different media and technical environments. Reaching this objective requires considerable standardisation activity amongst the main players to harmonise the already existing services (e.g. regarding metadata, protocols, etc.). The co-operation amongst the participants including both of the funding agencies is creating a unique team-work situation in Germany thus strengthening the information science community.

    Abstract
    An evaluation methodology based on fuzzy computing with words aimed at measuring the information quality of Web sites containing documents is presented. This methodology is qualitative and user oriented because it generates linguistic recommendations on the information quality of the content-based Web sites based on users' perceptions. It is composed of two main components, an evaluation scheme to analyze the information quality of Web sites and a measurement method to generate the linguistic recommendations. The evaluation scheme is based on both technical criteria related to the Web site structure and criteria related to the content of information on the Web sites. It is user driven because the chosen criteria are easily understandable by the users, in such a way that Web visitors can assess them by means of linguistic evaluation judgments. The measurement method is user centered because it generates linguistic recommendations of the Web sites based on the visitors' linguistic evaluation judgments. To combine the linguistic evaluation judgments we introduce two new majority guided linguistic aggregation operators, the Majority guided Linguistic Induced Ordered Weighted Averaging (MLIOWA) and weighted MLIOWA operators, which generate the linguistic recommendations according to the majority of the evaluation judgments provided by different visitors. The use of this methodology could improve tasks such as information filtering and evaluation on the World Wide Web.

    Abstract
    This article provides an overview of recent developments relating to the application of thesauri in information organisation and retrieval on the World Wide Web. It describes some recent thesaurus projects undertaken to facilitate resource description and discovery and access to wide-ranging information resources on the Internet. Types of thesauri available on the Web, thesauri integrated in databases and information retrieval systems, and multiple-thesaurus systems for cross-database searching are also discussed. Collective efforts and events in addressing the standardisation and novel applications of thesauri are briefly reviewed.

    Abstract
    A study of the "real world" Web information searching behavior of 206 college students over a 10-month period showed that, contrary to expectations, the users adopted a more passive or browsing approach to Web information searching and became more eclectic in their selection of Web hosts as they gained experience. The study used a longitudinal transaction log analysis of the URLs accessed during 5,431 user days of Web information searching to detect changes in information searching behavior associated with increased experience of using the Web. The findings have implications for the design of future Web information retrieval tools

    Abstract
    The World Wide Web is a popular and interactive medium used to collect, disseminate, and access an increasingly huge amount of information, which constitutes the mainstay of the so-called information and knowledge society. Because of its spectacular growth, related to both Web resources (pages, sites, and services) and number of users, the Web is nowadays the main information repository and provides some automatic systems for locating, accessing, and retrieving information. However, an open and crucial question remains: how to provide fast and effective retrieval of the information relevant to specific users' needs. This is a very hard and complex task, since it is pervaded with subjectivity, vagueness, and uncertainty. The expression soft computing refers to techniques and methodologies that work synergistically with the aim of providing flexible information processing tolerant of imprecision, vagueness, partial truth, and approximation. So, soft computing represents a good candidate to design effective systems for information access and retrieval on the Web. One of the most representative tools of soft computing is fuzzy set theory. This special topic section collects research articles witnessing some recent advances in improving the processes of information access and retrieval on the Web by using soft computing tools, and in particular, by using fuzzy sets and/or integrating them with other soft computing tools. In this introductory article, we first review the problem of Web retrieval and the concept of soft computing technology. We then briefly introduce the articles in this section and conclude by highlighting some future research directions that could benefit from the use of soft computing technologies.

    Abstract
    Controlled vocabulary and fixed citation order are two of the mechanisms used to effect collocation in traditional bibliographic classification schemes. Analysis of the rationale underlying application of each of these mechanisms provides a framework for the development of nontraditional approaches to the organization of resources available an the World Wide Web. When supported by an extralinguistic faceted vocabulary of concepts, this framework facilitates construction and implementation of flexible, dynamic indexing systems that can be applied in the design of electronic information systems and the organization of Web-based knowledge resources.

    Abstract
    The success of the World Wide Web Shows that we can access, search, and retrieve information from globally distributed databases. lf a database, such as a library catalog, has some sort of Web-based front end, we can type its URL into a Web browser and use its HTML-based forms to search for items in that database. Depending an how well the query conforms to the database content, how the search engine interprets the query, and how the server formats the results into HTML, we might actually find something usable. While the first two issues depend an ourselves and the server, an the Web the latter falls to the mercy of HTML, which we all know as a great destroyer of information because it codes for display but not for content description. When looking at an HTML-formatted display, we must depend an our own interpretation to recognize such entities as author names, titles, and subject identifiers. The Web browser can do nothing but display the information. lf we want some other view of the result, such as sorting the records by date (provided it offers such an option to begin with), the server must do it. This makes poor use of the computing power we have at the desktop (or even laptop), which, unless it involves retrieving more records, could easily do the result Set manipulation that we currently send back to the server. Despite having personal computers wich immense computational power, as far as information retrieval goes, we still essentially use them as dumb terminals.
