    Abstract
Discusses the necessity of providing new methods of research into user information retrieval behaviour. Notes that the user using the catalogue via the Internet and communicating exclusively with the computer system, disappears from the librarian's direct view. Implementing adequate software facilities in some sense broadens research prospects and improves its quality. Describes research carried out at the Jagiellonian Library, Poland, into the extent of use of OPAC retrieval facilities, throught the application of software that records all information retrieval commands

    Abstract
Information heuristics are concerned with the optimal strategies for information retrieval. The retrieval process is split into stages and the best methods of accomplishing each stage are described. The choice of an optimum retrieval strategy depends on the search subject, access methods and available retrieval tools. Information heuristics was introduced in the 1980s to the curriculum of Warsaw University library studies department to teach students general information retrieval methods and the knowledge necessary to find the best retrieval strategies

    Abstract
The KABA subject headings scheme in the form of an authority file will be the main cataloguing and retrieval tool of the 5 Polish academic libraries cooperating in the automation on the VTLS software platform. The scheme is designed to preserve compatibility between the bibliographic headings authority file and the subject headings authority file. Describes the design anf methodology of the scheme, the types of file entries and porposed lexical categories. KABA subject headings and subheadings are also described

    Abstract
Cognitive research into information science started at the International Workshop on the Cognitive viewpoint, Ghent, Belgium, 1977, where it was made clear that the task of research is to improve information flow, specifically through creating models of users' knowledge compatible with the conceptual frameworks used by information retrieval systems. Divides users' knowledge into knowledge of the world, of the information retrieval system, of the task and of the domain. Cognitivism as a research direction in information science explains how the cognitive processes and objects might influence information retrieval and representation

    Abstract
Gives a general description of USMARC records for authority files with more detailed information on the fields used in subject headings authority files. The most important record types are explained with the use of appropriate examples. The maintenance of a subject headings vocabulary in authority file and the development of a headings language. In Poland there is no authority file maintained by the national bibliographic centre. Libraries using VTLS software have cooperated in the development of KABA, a common subject heading authority file located on the Warsaw University Library computer system

    Abstract
Describes research carried out at the Central Library of the Politechnika Swictokizyska in Kielce, Poland, into the role of information retrieval languages (IRLs) in the process of accessing information. Research was done into the frequency of use of specific IRLs (subject heading systems, UDC and keywords) and preferences regarding the use of other methods of information retrieval

    Abstract
When designing hypertext structure the folowing must be considered: semantic structure of the presented knowledge, strucutre for the user considering his information needs, knowledge and the way he will use the hypertext to access information; and rhetoric structure. Non-hierarchical links between hypertext nodes created on the basis of extralinguistic non-specified associative relations might cause a decrease in recall and retrieval of information. In order to leiminate such defects, suggests the implementation of specified associative relations marked in the thesaurus to define adequate associative links in the hypertext

    Abstract
Discusses the various functions which a thesaurus can have. Highlights the main function of a thesaurus in vocabulary control, eliminating natural language ambiguity and providing consistency of indexing, and serving as an aid in the searching process. Further discusses the function of a search thesaurus in serving as a user's aid in full text systems and in free indexing systems, and the additional function of an online thesaurus integrated with an online database, that of a vocabulary master file. Notes also how a thesaurus can function as a switching language or intermediary lexicon in multidatabase systems

    Abstract
5 Polish academic libraries have adopted in their online catalogues the KABA (Academic Libraries Automated Catalogues) subject headings scheme with the vocabulary organized in an authority file. KABA has been developed as a universal scheme suitable for analytic subject heading creation. The rules for KABA are based on those of the LCSH and RAMEAU schemes. Problems encountered by libraries using KABA can be solved by a central institution coordinating staff training and maintaining one common authority file with entries validated by a team of specialists. Proposals aimed at eliminating the unnecessary repetition of document processing by participating libraries are now under consideration
