    Abstract
    This is the first comprehensive book on hypermedia nd the WWW that icludes features of the 2nd generation systems. Definitions, history, current technology and problems, leading-edge initiatives, future applications, all these are seen as an unfolding of a millenial communication medium that is not serving but involving even the non-technical person in a very technical world. Much of the promise of hypermedia lies in its applications to education, and this receives prominence in the book. The new hypermedia system 'HyperWave' is described in detail. The book's vision, organization, and easy-to-read style make it suitable as a source for information for the practitioner and the general reader.     Abstract
    The ease of linking and hopping from one text to another that we associate today with the World Wide Web was implemented in a different context prior to the Web. The creation of "hypertext" has a long and interesting history prior to the Web, as this article demonstrates. At the time it was issued, the HyperCard software application was expected to be the foundation of a widely-used new means of information organization. We can see now that the key ideas of hypertext were present in HyperCard, without the ease of use of subsequent World Wide Web features.

    Abstract
    Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to explore the application of post-structuralist theory to understanding hypertext and the World Wide Web, and the challenge posed by digital information technology to the practices of the information profession. Design/methodology/approach - The method adopted is that of a critical study. Findings - The paper argues for the importance of post-structuralism for an understanding of the implications of digital information for the information management profession. Originality/value - Focuses on an epistemological gap between the traditional practices of the information profession, and the structure of the World Wide Web.

    Abstract
    Fast, effective, and adaptable techniques are needed to automatically organize and retrieve information an the ever-increasing World Wide Web. In that respect, different strategies have been suggested to take hypertext links into account. For example, hyperlinks have been used to (1) enhance document representation, (2) improve document ranking by propagating document score, (3) provide an indicator of popularity, and (4) find hubs and authorities for a given topic. Although the TREC experiments have not demonstrated the usefulness of hyperlinks for retrieval, the hypertext structure is nevertheless an essential aspect of the Web, and as such, should not be ignored. The development of abstract models of the IR task was a key factor to the improvement of search engines. However, at this time conceptual tools for modeling the hypertext retrieval task are lacking, making it difficult to compare, improve, and reason an the existing techniques. This article proposes a general model for using hyperlinks based an Probabilistic Argumentation Systems, in which each of the above-mentioned techniques can be stated. This model will allow to discover some inconsistencies in the mentioned techniques, and to take a higher level and systematic approach for using hyperlinks for retrieval.

    Abstract
    This study investigated information retrieval from hypertext on the WWW. Significant main and interaction effects were found for both link density (number of links per display) and display format (in paragraphs or lists) on search performance. Low link densities displayed in list format produced the best overall results, in terms of search accuracy, search time, number of links explored, and search task prioritization. Lower densities affected user ability to prioritize search tasks and produced more accurate searches, while list displays positively affected all aspects of searching except task prioritization. The performance of novices and experts, in terms of their previous experience browsing hypertext on the WWW, was compared. Experts performed better, mostly because of their superior task prioritization

    Abstract
    Fortschrittliche Informationssysteme stellen ihren Benutzern 2 wichtige Suchmethoden zur Verfügung: die gezielte (Volltext-) Suche und das Navigieren im Objektbestand mit Hilfe von Hypertext-Links. Der Grund, warum diese beiden Konzepte aber auf breiter Basis noch nicht in jedem Informationssystem Anwendung gefunden haben, ist darin zu sehen, daß der manuelle Aufbau von umfassenden Hypertext-Strukturen auf der einen Seite und von großen Thesauri, die den Erfolg von Volltextsuchen wesentlich steigern, auf der anderen Seite bislang enormen Aufwand und damit hohe Kosten verursachte. Langfristig werden Informationssysteme aber nur dann große Akzeptanz bei der Benutzerschaft erzielen, wenn sie ihre Benutzer mit diesen beiden Techniken unterstützen und wenn sie dynamisch neuen Informationsbedürfnissen anpassen können, also lernfähig sind. Für den einzelnen Benutzer ergibt sich daraus der wesentliche Vorteil, daß er von den Recherche-Erfahrungen anderer Benutzer profitieren kann. In diesem Papier stellen wir eine Lernkomponente vor, die für das Hypertextsystem 'HyperMan' an der TU München entwickelt und implementiert wurde. Wir zeigen beispielhaft, wie Volltext-Suchanfragen der HyperMan-Benutzer von der Lernkomponente untersucht werden, um Thesauruseinträge zu gewinnen. Bei der Entwicklung dieser Lerntechniken zum (automatischen) Thesaurusaufbau konnte auf Erfahrungen mit dem lernfähigen Information Retrieval System 'Tegen' zurückgegriffen werden. In dem HyperMan System werden aber nicht nur Beziehungen (Relationen) zwischen Begriffen erlernt, sondern auch zwischen Textstücken. Wir gehen daher auch darauf ein, wie aufgrund einer Analyse des Benutzerverhaltens sowohl neue Hypertext-Links erlernt als auch vorhandene Links, die zuvor von HyperMans Generierungskomponente automatisch erzeugt wurden, modifiziert werden

    Abstract
    In this article, the fifth in a series on microcomputer software for information storage and retrieval, test results of seven programs are presented and various properties and qualitites of theses programs are discussed. In this instalment of the series we discuss programs for information storage and retrieval which are primarily characterised by the properties of personal information managers (PIMs), hypertext programs, or best match and ranking retrieval systems. The programs reviewed in this issue are the personal information managers 3by5/RediReference, askSam, Dayflo Tracker, and Ize; Personal Librarian uses best match and ranking; the hypertext programs are Folio Views and the HyperKRS/HyperCard combination (aksSam, Ize and Personal Librarian boast hypertext features as well). HyperKRS/HyperCard is only available for the Apple Macintosh. All other programs run under MS-DOS; versions of Personal Librarian also run under Windows and some other systems. For each of the seven programs about 100 facts and test results are tabulated. The programs are also discussed individually

    Abstract
    This paper suggests a standard format for creating hypermedia software. Teachers and students of literature have taken up the use of hypermedia technology enthusiastically and so we are rapidly arriving at a situation where a mushrooming of software for language and literature teaching will be faced. We will arrive much sooner at a situation where searching for an appropriate software would be as difficult as finding an appropriate article today. Technology is expected to optimise information to maximise knowledge: the confusion created by Gutenberg's invention is because duplication cannot be avoided. The suggested format is based on the major pillars of literary criticism - author centred, text centred and reader centred - and develops from the word to the work level. The findings have been demonstrated in the form of Technocriticism, a hypermedia program created on HyperCard

    Abstract
    Outlines the results of a pilot study designed to consider what constitutes a landmark in hypertext. Tests users' memories for locations visited on the WWW. Reports the results, and outlines a refined methodology for a new study. By understanding more about users' navigation through hypertext information space, the issue of recognition of informative materials on the WWW may be addressed

    Abstract
    Der vorliegende Beitrag zeigt auf, wie sich Neue Medien zur Verbesserung der Qualität der universitären Lehre einsetzen lassen. Exemplarische Vertreter der Neuen Medien sind in diesem Zusammenhang vor allem Hypertext und das auf Hypertext basierende World Wide Web, das dem Internet seit Beginn der Neunziger Jahre zu dem enormen Popularitätsschub verholfen hat. Das WWW bringt nicht nur die vielbeschworene 'Informationsflut' mit sich, sondern es liegt durch das WWW auch ein Werkzeug vor, um Informationen und Wissen optimal zu organisieren und aufzubereiten. Exemplarisch wird an einem Online-Programmierkurs verdeutlicht, wie sich Informations- und Wissensressourcen mit Hilfe der Neuen Medien besser strukturieren und produktiver einsetzen lassen
