- Abstract
- Als Erfinder des «Allgemeinen» gilt, gemäß dem Bericht des Aristoteles und seit diesem Bericht, Sokrates. Er ist es, der nicht mehr danach suchte, woraus ein Ding zu dem geworden ist, was es ist, oder wie es entstanden ist, sondern danach, «was [ein Ding] ist», und somit ist Sokrates der erste gewesen, der die Herausarbeitung des Allgemeinen (?a?????) forderte und mit seinen Fragen seine Gesprächspartner zu dieser Herausarbeitung trieb bzw. lockte; die Definition (???sµ??) war das Ziel des sokratischen Gesprächs, und die sokratische Aporie war das Vehikel.

- Abstract
- Eine der wesentlichen Aufgaben als Fachreferent*in ist die inhaltliche Erschließung der neuerworbenen Literatur, sowie die Begutachtung und Auswahl der neu erschienenen Werke in den jeweiligen Fachgebieten hinsichtlich der Relevanz für die eigenen Sammlungen gemäß dem Sammlungsprofil der TU Wien Bibliothek. Im Zuge der Corona-Krise wurde die herkömmliche Arbeitsweise in der Sacherschließung beeinträchtigt, und es haben sich neue Herausforderungen, aber auch Möglichkeiten ergeben. Neben der fehlenden Autopsie der Literatur leidet auch die Sichtung und Erwerbung neuer Literatur unter der physischen Abwesenheit vom Arbeitsplatz bzw. der entsprechenden technischen Infrastruktur. Auch der persönliche Austausch mit den Kolleg*innen wurde deutlich erschwert. Neben den Schwierigkeiten wurden aber auch die neuen Handlungsoptionen auf beruflicher und individueller Ebene positiv gesehen. In dem Artikel werden unsere individuellen Erfahrungen an der TU Wien Bibliothek sowie Ausblicke in die Zukunft wiedergegeben.

- Abstract
- Das Problem der Wahrnehmung und Darstellung von Wahrheit durch die Medien führt zu vier zentralen Fragen: Wie viel Wahrheit gibt es in der Welt, über die Journalisten berichten müssen? Wie ermittelt oder recherchiert man diese Wahrheit? Wie trennt man die Spreu vom Weizen? Und wie geht man als Journalist mit dem um, was man als Wahrheit erkannt hat oder erkannt zu haben glaubt? Hier gibt es ganz offensichtlich eine Parallele zwischen Journalisten und Wissenschaftlern. Journalisten und Wissenschaftler brauchen erstens Hypothesen, zweitens geeignete Hypothesentests, drittens ein gutes Abgrenzungs-Kriterium und viertens Verfahren, um die erkannten Sachverhalte auf angemessene Weise für eine Kommunikation mit anderen zu repräsentieren, das heißt sie darzustellen. Es gibt zwei große Unterschiede zwischen Journalisten und Wissenschaftlern: Journalisten sind in der Regel auf raum-zeitlich begrenzte Aussagen aus, Wissenschaftler in der Regel auf raumzeitlich unbegrenzte Gesetze. Aber diese Unterschiede sind fließend, weil Wissenschaftler raum-zeitlich begrenzte Aussagen brauchen, um ihre All-Aussagen zu überprüfen, und Journalisten sich immer häufiger auf das Feld der allgemeinen Gesetzes-Aussagen wagen oder doch zumindest Kausalinterpretationen für soziale Phänomene anbieten. Der zweite Unterschied besteht darin, dass die Wissenschaft weitgehend professionalisiert ist (zumindest gilt dies uneingeschränkt für die Naturwissenschaften und die Medizin), was ihr relativ klare Abgrenzungs- und Güte-Kriterien beschert hat. Diese fehlen weitgehend im Journalismus.

- Die Deutsche Nationalbibliografie hat eine Geschichte hinter sich, die wohl einzigartig, aber eben auch typisch für Deutschland ist: Sie wurde erstmals 1931 veröffentlicht, herausgegeben von der Deutschen Bücherei Leipzig, die 1913 ihren Betrieb als die zentrale deutsche Archivbibliothek aufnahm. Sie erschien in den Reihen A (Neuerscheinungen des Buchhandels) sowie B (Neuerscheinungen außerhalb des Buchhandels), zeitgleich übernahm die Deutsche Bücherei Leipzig die Bearbeitung des »Halbjahresverzeichnisses der Neuerscheinungen des Deutschen Buchhandels« sowie des »Deutschen Bücherverzeichnisses«. Nach der Teilung Deutschlands wurde 1947 die Deutsche Bibliothek Frankfurt am Main gegründet, bereits am 12. Dezember 1946 war Redaktionsschluss für das erste Heft der »Bibliographie der Deutschen Bibliothek, Frankfurt am Main«. Damit existierten in Deutschland zwei Bibliotheken, die die jeweilige Aufgabenstellung und Funktion einer Nationalbibliothek für die spätere DDR und die Bundesrepublik übernahmen; es erschienen zwei nationalbibliografischeVerzeichnisse, die inhaltlich nahezu identisch waren. Nach der Vereinigung der beiden Bibliotheken einschließlich des Deutschen Musikarchivs Berlin zu der Einrichtung »Die Deutsche Bibliothek« erschien am 3. Januar 1991 das erste Heft der neuen, gemeinsamen »Deutschen Nationalbibliographie und Bibliographie der im Ausland erschienenen deutschsprachigen Veröffentlichungen«. Sie setzt sich aus Allgemeinund Spezialbibliografien zusammen, die in Reihen gegliedert sind und unterschiedliche Berichtszeiträume haben. Die gedruckte Ausgabe in Heftform sowie die CD-Rom-Ausgaben werden von der MVB Marketingund Verlagsservice des Buchhandels GmbH verlegt. Zusätzlich bietet Die Deutsche Bibliothek die Daten über ihre Zentralen bibliografischen Dienstleistungen an. Mit der Deutschen Nationalbibliografie erfüllt sie ihre durch das »Gesetz über die Deutsche Bibliothek« definierte Pflicht zur umfassenden Dokumentation des deutschen Schrifttums. So ist der Stand 2003. Im Hinblick auf neue Kommunikationstechnologien, die Verfügbarkeit von Netzen und nicht zuletzt im Spiegel der internationalen Entwicklung hat Die Deutsche Bibliothek seit geraumer Zeit Überlegungen angestellt, wie sie künftig ihren gesetzlichen Auftrag zur bibliografischen Verzeichnung erfüllen kann. Das wird zu entscheidenden Veränderungen führen, die ab 2004 wirksam werden.

- "Nach dem schlechten Abschneiden deutscher Schüler in der Bildungsstudie Pisa setzt sich der Börsenvereinsvorsitzende des Deutschen Buchhandels, Dieter Schormann, für einen "Runden Tisch" auf Bundesebene mit den Länder-Kultusministern ein. Teilnehmen sollten daran auch Vertreter aus der Wirtschaft, Buchhändler, Verleger, Pädagogen und Bibliothekare, sagte der Gießener Buchhändler. Schormann: "Der Runde Tisch soll Signale setzen. Wir brauchen ein breites gesellschaftliches Bewusstsein für die Bedrohung der Zukunft durch das Bildungsdefizit." Hier seien besonders Politik und Wirtschaft gefordert. Nach der Veröffentlichung der Pisa-Studie hätten gerade Wirtschaftskreise zu viele "Prügel" verteilt. Auch die Unternehmen ständen in der Pflicht, über neue Bildungskonzepte nachzudenken. Laut Pisa-Studie können mehr als ein Fünftel der deutschen Schüler Texte nicht mehr richtig lesen und verstehen. Im "Rausch der Entwicklung rund ums Internet" hätten viele Verantwortliche die "Bodenhaftung" verloren, nannte Schormann dafür als einen Grund. Bücher würden im Schulunterricht inzwischen vielfach durch das Internet ersetzt. Das sei falsch. Schormann: "Alle sagen, Schulen müssen ans Netz. Was bringt das, wenn die Lesekompetenz nicht mehr vorhanden ist, um die neuen Medien zu nutzen?" Viele Kinder würden zudem die Lust am Lesen verlieren, weil die im Unterricht verwendeten Bücher oft veraltet seien"

- Abstract
- ONIX (das Akronym steht für Online information exchange) ist der erste weltweit akzeptierte Standard für angereicherte Metadaten über Bücher, Fortsetzungswerke und andere Produkte des Buchhandels. Er wurde ursprünglich in den USA entwickelt, zunächst mit dem Ziel, dem Internetbuchhandel in einem einheitlichen Format Katalogdaten und zusätzlich Marketingmaterial zur Verfügung stellen zu können. Von Anfang an waren Barsortimente, bibliographische Agenturen und Verlage in den USA und bald auch aus dem Vereinigten Königreich an der Entwicklung von ONIX beteiligt und haben diese finanziell sowie personell gefördert. Die Pflege und Weiterentwicklung dieses neuen Standards wurde dann in die Hände von EDItEUR gelegt, der internationalen Dachorganisation für Standardisierung im Buchhandel, gegründet und gefördert von Verbänden aus Buchhandel, Verlagen und Bibliothekswesen, darunter dem Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels und der European Booksellers Federation. Büro und Sekretariat von EDItEUR werden in London von Book Industry Communication (BIC), einer Gemeinschaftsorganisation der britischen Verleger- und Buchhändlerverbände, gestellt. EDIMUR wurde vor zehn Jahren gegründet, um EDIStandards (EDI = electronic data interchange, elektronischer Datenaustausch) für die Kommunikation zwischen Buchhandel und Verlagen einerseits und Bibliotheken und ihren Lieferanten andererseits zu entwickeln. Dafür wurden Richtlinien für eine Reihe von EANCOM-Nachrichten verabschiedet, darunter für Bestellungen, Auftragsbestätigungen, Rechnungen und Angebote. Ein Richtlinienentwurf für die Nachricht PRICAT (Price and sales catalogue), die für die Übermittlung von Katalogdaten bestimmt ist, wurde zwar vor einigen Jahren entwickelt, aber bisher noch nirgendwo in der Praxis getestet oder gar produktiv eingesetzt. Hingegen sind die transaktionsbezogenen EDI-Nachrichten sowohl im Bibliothekswesen als auch im Buchhandel in Europa vielfach im Einsatz.
