    Abstract
    Die wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken haben in den letzten Jahren große Anstrengungen unternommen, das gesellschaftliche und politische Leitbild der Wissensgesellschaft durch den Aufbau kooperativer Informationsangebote und eine zunehmende Digitalisierung von Metadaten und Medien zu realisieren. Sie haben dabei unbeabsichtigt die Basis für eine Wettbewerbsarena geschaffen, in der die einzelne Bibliothek ihre Position behaupten muß. Die für den Aufbau einer Erfolgsposition im Wettbewerb zwingend erforderliche Strategiediskussion einer Universitäts- und Hochschulbibliothek kritisch zu unterstützen, ist das zentrale Anliegen der Forschungsarbeit. Der Band richtet sich an Führungskräfte in Bibliotheken, Universitäten und Hochschulen sowie an politisch Verantwortliche im Bildungs-und Forschungsbereich.

Brandtner): "Die vorliegende Veröffentlichung von Theresia Simon, Professorin für Betriebswirtschaft im Studiengang Wirtschaftsinformatik und E-Business an der Hochschule Ravensburg-Weingarten, basiert auf einer Dissertation an der Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Potsdam, die im Dezember 2004 abgeschlossen wurde. Zentrales Anliegen der Arbeit ist es, in einer Zeit eines diagnostizierten Umbruchs die Strategiediskussionen von Universitäts- und Hochschulbibliotheken aus der Perspektive einer Einzelorganisation kritisch zu unterstützen, um deren Erfolgspositionen im Wettbewerb zu stärken. Dabei geht die Studie richtigerweise davon aus, dass die Entwicklung hin zur Wissensgesellschaft keinesfalls den Organisationstyp Bibliothek automatisch begünstigt, obwohl die bibliothekarische Gemeinschaft konform zu den Grundwerten der Wissensgesellschaft agiert. Erst durch intensive Positionierungsarbeit kann es Bibliotheken gelingen, am Informationsmarkt langfristig erfolgreich zu bleiben. Erklärte Zielgruppe der Studie ist das Bibliotheksmanagement. . . . Im abschließenden sechsten Kapitel behandelt die Studie den Einfluss ergänzender Entscheidungsfelder eines integrierten Managements auf die Bibliothekspositionierung. Dabei verbleibt sie allerdings ganz im allgemeinen Managementwissen und erarbeitet keine bibliotheksspezifischen Ansätze. Dass Lernen (im Sinn der Lernenden Organisation) ein fokussierender Metaaspekt einer zukunftsorientierten Bibliotheksentwicklung ist, dass Human Resource Management, Leistungsmessung und organisationsstrukturelle Modernisierung die Bibliotheksentwicklung unterstützen, kann aktuell als Allgemeinplatz angesehen werden. So redundant wie dieses Abschlusskapitel sind die über die Arbeit verstreuten zahlreichen Kurzreferate verwendeter - bzw. bei genauerer Betrachtung: teilweise bloß anzitierter - Theorien und Methoden (z.B. die Exkurse zu Amitai Etzionis Identitäts-Konzept, zu Thomas S. Kuhns Paradigma- Begriff oder zu Niklas Luhmanns Konstruktion der System-Umwelt-Differenz), ärgerlich die zahlreichen Grammatik-Fehler. Darüber hinaus ist vieles, worüber Simon schreibt, der Bibliothekswelt gut bekannt und sehr bewusst. Dennoch beinhaltet die Arbeit eine Reihe von Anregungen zur strategischen Positionierung von Bibliotheken und kann daher dem Bibliotheksmanagement zur selektiven Lektüre empfohlen werden."

Tatsächlich kann sich das Informationsmanagement an Hochschulen über einen Mangel an Herausforderungen nicht beklagen: wie die Autorin einleitend darstellt, haben diese nämlich sowohl administrative als auch wissenschaftliche Informationen in sehr großer Menge zu verwalten. Dabei sind die für spezifische Informationen benötigten Datenquellen sowohl im administrativen als auch wissenschaftlichen Bereich oft voneinander isoliert und befinden sich in heterogenen Systemen - unerwünschte Redundanzen und Inkonsistenzen sind die Folge. Verbunden mit der verstärkten Nachfrage nach elektronisch vorliegenden Fachinformationen im Wissenschaftsbetrieb ist ein planmäßiges, strukturiertes und effizientes Umgehen mit Informationen notwendig. Ein Portal kann hier wertvolle Dienste leisten - doch was ist darunter eigentlich genau zu verstehen? Nach einer Auseinandersetzung mit der einschlägigen Literatur gelangt Guba zu folgender Arbeitsdefinition: "Ein Portal ist [...] ein virtueller Ort für die Bereitstellung und Distribution von (über verschiedene Anwendungen verteilte) Daten und Informationen und ermöglicht eine durchgängig IT-gestützte Prozessteuerung übertechnische Systemgrenzen hinweg [...] Ein universitäres Informations- und Kommunikationsportal hat also die Funktion, auf der einen Seite den Universitätsbetrieb und auf der anderen Seite die grundlegenden Bestandteile des Wissenschaftsprozesses, nämlich die Gewinnung, Speicherung, Publikation und Vermittlung von Informationen bzw. Wissen sowie die wissenschaftliche Kommunikation, zu unterstützen". Als weiteres wesentliches Merkmal von Portalen kommt noch die Möglichkeit der Personalisierung der Funktionen hinzu.
    Bei der Einteilung von Portalen in verschiedene Typen herrscht in der Literatur eine große Vielfalt an Ansätzen. Ausgehend von der fehlenden Stringenz und Vollständigkeit der verwendeten Typologien wird von Guba eine eigene Klassifikation präsentiert, die die Portale nach ihren jeweils primären Funktionen einteilt: so werden Rechercheportale zur Recherche nach Fachinformationen, lnformations- und Kommunikationsportale zur organisationalen Aufgabenerfüllung (Corporate Portals) bzw. privaten Endnutzung (nicht-transaktionsorientierte Consumer Portals) sowie Geschäftsportale zur Abwicklung von Geschäftsvorgängen als die drei Hauptklassen definiert, in die sich die weiteren Portaltypen einordnen lassen. Auf drei dieser weiteren Portaltypen - Fachinformations-, Bibliotheksund Universitätsportale - geht die Autorin näher ein und bringt auch einige Praxisbeispiele. Erstere stellen Rechercheportale dar, in denen von einem virtuellen Ort aus verteilte, heterogene Datenquellen ohne Medienbrüche durchsucht und genutzt werden können. Im deutschsprachigen Raum sind sie als Virtuelle Fachbibliotheken schon seit einigen Jahren bekannt und verbreitet. Bibliotheksportale, die ebenfalls zu den Rechercheportalen gehören, sind im deutschsprachigen Raum jedoch noch kaum zu finden. Sie zeichnen sich durch personalisierbare Zugänge zum Literatur- und Fachinformationsangebot spezifischer Bibliotheken aus und gehen somit weit über die üblichen Benutzerinnenkontos in Online-Bibliothekskatalogen hinaus. Universitätsportale als spezielle Ausprägung von Informations- und Kommunikationsportalen werden durch drei Fallbeschreibungen ausführlicher präsentiert. Sie sind - zumindest in Deutschland - schon häufiger vorhanden, was wohl nicht zuletzt an der finanziellen Förderung dieses Portaltyps durch die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG liegt. Im praktischen Teil zeigt die Autorin am Beispiel der Donau-Universität Krems, wie mittels einer Analyse des Informationsbedarfes der Zielgruppe Portale hinsichtlich ihres Funktionsumfanges konzipiert werden können. Sie führte hierzu eine Befragung unter Studierenden durch und gewann daraus Erkenntnisse, die nun als Ausgangspunkt herangezogen werden können, um für die Donau-Universität ein Portal für Studierende als primäre Zielgruppe zu realisieren.
    Die vorliegende Studie ist sowohl in ihrem theoretischen als auch prakischen Teil interessant und lesenswert. Es wäre wünschenswert, wenn die von dir Autorin vorgeschlagene Klassifikation von Portalen von der Fachwelt aufgenommen und weiter bearbeitet würde. Die präsentierten Beispiele von Portalen stellen eine Fundgrube an Anregungen und Ideen für die Konzeption von (Universitäts-)Portalen dar. Hierbei gilt allerdings: der Entwurf erfolgreicher Portale hat nicht den Schreibtisch von Programmiererinnen oder Webdesignerinnen als Ausgangspunkt, sondern hat sich primär an den Bedürfnissen der Zielgruppen auszurichten. Die Erstellung oder Weiterentwicklung eines Portals ist deshalb zuerst eine Angelegenheit des betrieblichen Informationsmanagements und erst in weiterer Folge eine technische oder gestalterische Aufgabe - ein Umstand, der in dieser Studie durch die Informationsbedarfsanalyse für ein Portal der Donau-Universität Krems treffend veranschaulicht wurde. Der im Anhang abgedruckte umfangreiche Fragebogen kann dabei als Orientierung für ähnliche Erhebungen dienen. Fazit: Dieser erhellende, prägnante und praxisrelevante Überblick in Buchform zum Thema (Universitäts-)Portale schließt eine wesentliche Lücke in der einschlägigen deutschsprachigen Fachliteratur und liefert einen Beitrag zur Professionalisierung des universitären Informationsmanagements."

    Abstract
    Das Handbuch zur Regensburger Verbundklassifikation (RVK) ist unverzichtbar und wird angesichts des jahrelangen Bestehens dieser Klassifikation, der großen und weiter wachsenden Zahl ihrer Anwender und ihrem - auch supranational - zunehmenden Bekanntheitsgrad auf neuem Stand benötigt. Diese Publikation entspricht auch dem Interesse vieler Institutionen an ihrer Bibliothek, vor allem soweit sie sich als Freihandbibliothek im Sinne einer Bestands- und Wissensrepräsentation erweist. Zweifellos bildet die RVK für die moderne Klassifikationspraxis und die Umsetzung der notwendigen Prinzipien ein wesentliches Paradigma. Die einzelnen Fachsystematiken der RVK sind im Handbuch unterschiedlich ausführlich dargestellt und sollen auch in ihrem jeweils verschiedenen Umfang über die Jahrzehnte hin, durchaus differierende Anforderungen der Verbundpartner bei der Optimierung zeigen.

    Abstract
    Bibliothekarische Sacherschließung stellt zunächst eine praktische Aufgabe dar. Gleichwohl sollte bibliothekarische Sacherschließung als Ganzes und in einem wesentlichen Teilbereich wie der Systematischen Freihandaufstellung auch in ihrer historischen Entwicklung und Bedeutung gesehen werden. Ein bedeutender Aspekt bleibt die notwendige Einordnung in das größere Umfeld, vor allem der Bibliotheksgeschichte, aber auch der Wissenschaftsgeschichte. Schwerpunkte bilden hier die Geschichte der Dezimalmethode mit den Teilbereichen UDK und DDC und die Nachkriegsgeschichte der klassifikatorischen Erschließung an wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken Deutschlands, einschließlich der neuen Entwicklung der Verbundarbeit in der Klassifikation. Bedeutend sind weiter die Beispiele für den Vergleich von Aufstellungsklassifikationen als Annäherung an eine zu entwickelnde Methodik. Dabei stellen sich auch Fragen des Inhalts ausgewählter Klassifikationssysteme in historischer Betrachtung. Dies entspricht bereits dem Bibliotheksplan 73, der immerhin Fragen der Bibliotheksgeschichte und der Klassifikation zu den genuinen Bereichen bibliothekswissenschaftlicher Forschung rechnet.

Das Kapitel über die Geschichte der Systematischen Freihandaufstellung liefert daher Beispiele aus Klosterbibliotheken des Mittelalters bis hin zum Bereich der Privatbibliotheken von Ärzten späterer Zeit. Wichtige internationale Klassifikationen sowie Neuentwicklungen an neueren deutschen Universitätsbibliotheken versieht der Autor allerdings mit kritischen Anmerkungen betreffend die Unterschiede innerhalb von Systematiken. Dem folgt eine Gegenüberstellung von Aufstellungssystematiken bzw. Beispielen für den Vergleich von Aufstellungsklassifikationen. B. Lorenz beweist in seinen "Notizen" als "Wechselspiel" deutlich, wie untrennbar die Geschichte der bibliothekarischen Sacherschließung von der Geschichte der Wissenschaften ist. Letztendlich kommt der Autor übereinstimmend mit Klara Erdei zu dem Schluß, "dass der Online-Katalog nicht den Untergang sondern eher eine Renaissance der bibliothekarischen Klassifikation mit sich bringen kann: eine noch benutzerfreundlichere, vielseitigere Realisierung der systematischen Erschließung und Suche". Das vorliegende Werk ist keine technische Auflistung von formalen, pragmatischen oder strukturellen Fragen und es ist auch keine weitere Darstellung des Wesens der Systematik. Vielmehr ist es dem Autor erfolgreich gelungen, den Fragen der hierarchisch höchst- bzw. hochstehenden Gliederungen und des Inhalts ausgewählter Klassifikationssysteme in historischer Betrachtung nachzugehen."

    Abstract
    Das Problem der Wahrnehmung und Darstellung von Wahrheit durch die Medien führt zu vier zentralen Fragen: Wie viel Wahrheit gibt es in der Welt, über die Journalisten berichten müssen? Wie ermittelt oder recherchiert man diese Wahrheit? Wie trennt man die Spreu vom Weizen? Und wie geht man als Journalist mit dem um, was man als Wahrheit erkannt hat oder erkannt zu haben glaubt? Hier gibt es ganz offensichtlich eine Parallele zwischen Journalisten und Wissenschaftlern. Journalisten und Wissenschaftler brauchen erstens Hypothesen, zweitens geeignete Hypothesentests, drittens ein gutes Abgrenzungs-Kriterium und viertens Verfahren, um die erkannten Sachverhalte auf angemessene Weise für eine Kommunikation mit anderen zu repräsentieren, das heißt sie darzustellen. Es gibt zwei große Unterschiede zwischen Journalisten und Wissenschaftlern: Journalisten sind in der Regel auf raum-zeitlich begrenzte Aussagen aus, Wissenschaftler in der Regel auf raumzeitlich unbegrenzte Gesetze. Aber diese Unterschiede sind fließend, weil Wissenschaftler raum-zeitlich begrenzte Aussagen brauchen, um ihre All-Aussagen zu überprüfen, und Journalisten sich immer häufiger auf das Feld der allgemeinen Gesetzes-Aussagen wagen oder doch zumindest Kausalinterpretationen für soziale Phänomene anbieten. Der zweite Unterschied besteht darin, dass die Wissenschaft weitgehend professionalisiert ist (zumindest gilt dies uneingeschränkt für die Naturwissenschaften und die Medizin), was ihr relativ klare Abgrenzungs- und Güte-Kriterien beschert hat. Diese fehlen weitgehend im Journalismus.
