    Vielleicht ist die wichtigste Neuerung in der Informatik der letzten 10 Jahre war und ist die Hinwendung zur Objektorientierung.     Abstract
    Im Bereich der Relationalen Datenbanksysteme hat sich eine Abfragesprache auf breiter Front durchgesetzt, die 'Structured Query Language (SQL)'. Ein Grund ist, daß sie mehr ist als nur eine Abfragesprache. Sie ist eine umfassende befehlsorientierte formale Sprache für die Einrichtung und den Betrieb Relationaler Datenbanken. Noch mehr Bedeutung gewinnt sie in letzter Zeit, weil sie DAS Mittel für die Verknüpfung verschiedener Datenbestände ist. Insbesondere unter 'Onlinern' hat SQL den Ruf, schwierig zu sein.     Menügeführt zu Datenbankanwendungen. Dies ist sicherlich ein Wunschtraum vieler, die sich mit komplexen befehlorientierten formalen Sprachen herumschlagen. Doch es gibt Datenbanksysteme, ja sogar Datenbankentwicklungssysteme, die genau dies versprechen. Ob sie dies halten, soll hier an einem ersten Beispiel betrachtet werden.     Abstract
    Datenbanken aufbauen - eine Aufgabe, der wir uns immer wieder gegenüber sehen, und sei es auch nur, um bestehende Datenbanken an die Veränderungen der dynamischen Welt anzupassen. Der erste Schritt beim Datenbankaufbau ist die Erstellung eines Datenmodells, genauer: eines konzeptionellen Datenmodells. Dieses stellt ein Abbild des zu betrachtenden Anwendungsbereichs dar (des Weltausschnitts) und wird mit einem Instrumentarium erstellt, das einerseits möglichst viel von den Strukturen, Abläufen, Regeln, usw. des Weltaussschnits erfaßt und das andererseits in ein 'physisches Modell' umgesetzt werden kann. Neben dem Relationalen Datenmodell ist der am meisten verbreitete Ansatz zur Modellierung von Weltausschnitten für Datenbanken der Entity- Relationship Ansatz.
