- Abstract
- Der Einsatz von Online-Datenbanken für interne Arbeiten wie Erwerbung, Katalogisierung, Leihverkehr und Ausleihverbuchuing ist in den Public Libraries der USA mittlerweile Standard. Die externe Nutzung von Online-Datenbanken für den Reference Service dagegen beschränkte sich bis vor kurzem auf mittelgroße und große Public Libraries, doch können durch die Schaffung von Verbünden neuerdings auch kleinere Public Libraries ihren Benutzern diesen Service anbieten. Die <Handhabungspraxis, die oft im krassen Gegensatz zur Theorie steht, und die Qualität des Online Reference Service sind von Bibliothek zu Bibliothek recht unterschiedlich. Belebendes Element in einem stagnierenden Online-Markt ist die Tatsache, daß mehr und mehr Bibliotheken dazu übergehen, eigene Datenbanken zu produzieren. Die Zukunft von Online-Datenbanken im externen Bereich von Public Libraries ist jedoch ungewiß, angesichts der großen Beliebtheit der CD-ROM bei Bibliothekaren und Benutzern

- Im Vergleich mit der konventionellen Bibliothek stellt der Autor schrittweise die Recherchemöglichkeiten in der virtuellen Bibliothek Internet vor. Dabei werden detailliert Methoden und Strategien zur Informationsgewinnung zunächst beschrieben und anschließend mit Anwendungsaufgaben eingeübt. Die wichtigsten so vorgestellten Bereiche: Kataloge und Suchmaschinen, Diskussionforen, elektronische Nachschlagewerke. Auf die PC-gerechte Weiterverarbeitung der aus dem Internet gewonnenen Daten ('gepackte' Dateien, Texte, Filme, Bilder, Tondokumente) wird ebenfalls eingegangen. - Bei den Überlegungen, das Dienstleistungsangebot der Bibliotheken auszuweiten, spielt der Zugang zu nationalen und internationalen Netzen und damit der Zugang zu online verfügbaren Informationen eine immer größere Rolle. Für die Auswahl des Netzes müssen sowohl die einmaligen Ausgaben für die technische Ausstattung und Zugangsberechtigung als auch die monatlich wiederkehrenden Ausgaben für die Nutzung berücksichtigt werden. - Abstract
- Die als LIB/2-Studie der EG-Kommission bekanntgewordene Untersuchung stellt eine umfassende Bestandsaufnahme des EDV-Einsatzes in den Öffentlichen und wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken der Mitgliedsstaaten der Gemeinschaft dar. Sie wurde zweistufig in den Jahren 1986 bis 1993 durchgeführt und in Länderübersichten veröffentlicht. Im Frühjahr 1994 wurde im Auftrag des DBI eine Auswertung der LIB/2-Studie und ihres Updates im Hinblick auf das Angebot computerbasierter Dienstleistungen in den untersuchten wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken vorgenommen. Die vorliegende Veröffentlichung ist eine Beschreibung des Entwicklungsstandes in Großbritannien, Irland, Dänemark, Niederlande, Deutschland, Portugal und Spanien. Ziel ist es, auf Grund der exemplarisch aufgezeigten Unterschiede, Stärken und Schwächen zu identifizieren, die ihrerseits wiederum für die Ableitung von Empfehlungen für die weitere Entwicklung im deutschen wissenschaftlichen Bibliothekswesen als Grundlage dienen können

- Abstract
- Im Jahr 1993 startete das Projekt InfoBase an der Universität Freiburg als Kooperationsprojekt zwischen dem Rechenzentrum und der UB. In einer guten Zusammenarbeit zwischen diesen beiden zentralen Einrichtungen konnte das Projektteam bisher sehr erfolgreich die Versorgung der Universität mit elektronischer Fachinformation über das Datennetz organisieren. Dank des hohen Engagements - auch in finanzieller Hinsicht - von RZ und UB verfügt die Universität Freiburg heute über ein hervorragendes Werkzeug zur elektronischen Informationsversorgung. Erste Projekte für landesweite Angebote zeigen, daß Kooperationen mehrerer Einrichtungen im Land Vorteile für alle Beteiligten mit sich bringen, wenn sich auch heute noch die Begeisterung der lizenzgebenden Datenbankhersteller und Anbieter in deutlichen Grenzen hält. In der zweiten Hälfte des Jahres 1996 soll veruscht werden, das bisherige Angebot bibliographischer Datendienste mit Volltextdatenbanken zu ergänzen. Daß dies auch alles von den Benutzern so gewollt ist und angenommen wird, zeigen Nutzungsstatistiken und eine im Jahr 1995 durchgeführte Nutzerbefragung

- Abstract
- Kanadische Kolleginnen haben eine Evaluierungsmethode entwickelt, mit welcher die Qualität des Auskunftsdienstes komplexer beurteilt werden kann als bisher und die darüberhinaus konkrete Hinweise gibt, wie der Auskunftsdienst verbessert werden könnte. Hierbei werden die Methoden Test und verdeckte Beobachtung kombiniert. Kriterium für die Beurteilung des Qualität des Auskunftsdienstes ist nicht die Zahl der richtig beantworteten Fragen, sondern die Zufriedenheit der Benutzer, und die hängt mehr als man erwarten könnte, von der Qualität der Interaktion im Auskunftsdienst ab. Diese kanadischen Erfahrungen wurden bei einer entsprechenden Evaluierung im Stuttgarter Raum bestätigt, die von Studierenden der HBI Stuttgart durchgeführt wurde. In weniger als 50% der Testfälle kam es zu einer nützlichen bzw. zufriedenstellenden Antwort. Dabei spielten mangelnde kommunikative Kompetenz und die fehlende Interviewkompetenz eine besonders große Rolle

- Für Informationsvermittlungsstellen wird der Nachweis ihres Nutzens und einer wirtschaftlichen Arbeitsweise immer bedeutender. Controlling liefert wertvolle Instrumente hierfür. Dieser Beitrag beschreibt die Schwierigkeiten, die in Zusammenhang mit der Leistungsmessung von Informationsdienstleistungen auftreten: Probleme, welche sich durch die besondere 'Beschaffenheit' des Faktors Information ergeben und solche, die durch das Umfeld IVS bedingt sind. Es werden die Nutzenkomponenten der Ressource Information herausgearbeitet. Die Voraussetzungen für die Einführung eines Leistungsbewertungs- und Kennzahlensystems sowie Bewertungsobjekte und -kriterien, Bewertungsebenen und -perspektiven werden beschrieben

- Abstract
- Die Studie gibt ein statistisches Bild über die Angebotsseite elektronischer Informationsdienste (Online-Datenbanken, Realtime-Dienste, Btx-Dienste, 'offline'-Informationsdienste auf magnetischen und optischen Speichermedien - wie insbesondere CD-ROM-Dienste). Sie basiert auf mehrjährigen Untersuchungen, die nach gleichen Definitionen und Methoden gleichzeitig in allen EG-Ländern durchgeführt wurden. Im Zentrum stehen die Angaben zum deutschen Angebot. Diese Zahlen werden mit entsprechenden Angaben aus anderen EG-Ländern und (soweit verfügbar) auch aus anderen teilen der Welt verglichen. Ferner werden Entwicklungsperspektiven für einzelne Typen von elektronischen Informationsdiensten aufgezeigt

- Abstract
- An 2 biowissenschaftlichen Einrichtungen der Grundlagenforschung, dem Max-Delbrück-Centrum für Molekulare Medizin, Berlin-Buch und dem Leibniz-Institut für Neurobiologie, Magdeburg, wurden 1997 bzw. 1998 Nutzerbefragungen durchgeführt. Obwohl die untersuchten Gruppen beträchtliche Altersunterschiede aufwiesen, ergeben sich einheitliche Trends: für etwa 2/3 der Wissenschaftler ist gegenwärtig die Nutzung von Printmedien und elektronischen Informationsofferten gleichwertig, während etwa 15% der Befragten letzteren den Vorzug geben. Bei der Datenbanknutzung ist festzustellen, daß MEDLINE die überragende Position sowohl bei der CD-ROM als auch Online im Internet einnimmt

- Abstract
- Die Darstellung der theoretischen Grundlagen, die zu einer strukturierten und durchdachten Benutzerschulung führen, basiert hauptsächlich auf anglo-amerikanischer Literatur mit dem Schwerpunkt bei den Situationen der Universitätsbibliotheken. Die praktische Planung, Entwicklung und Organisation des Benutzerschulungsprogramms der New Mexico State University (NMSU) in Alamogordo nach der Lehrmethode Workbook wird dargestellt. Ferner werden die Benutzerschulungsangebote einer Bewertung unterzogen, inwieweit jene die in der Literatur beschriebenen Kriterien erfüllen, auch hier auf der Basis des Library Skills Workbook der Bibliothek, Abschließend folgt ein Ausblick auf neuere Tendenzen in der Benutzschulung in den USA und die Anwendbarkeit der theoretischen Grundlagen in Deutschland
