- Abstract
- Seit der 1983 in zweiter Auflage erschienenen 'Katalogkunde: Formalkataloge und formale Ordnungsmethoden' hat sich durch die elektronische Datenverarbeitung die Arbeit im Bereich der Katalogisierung einschneidend verändert. Einerseits ist ein gewisser Entwicklungsprozeß noch nicht abgeschlossen (Regelwerke, Datenformate, Einbindung in den allgemeinen Informations- und Kommunikationsprozeß), andererseits ist das Wissen sowohl um konventionelle als auch um elektronische Kataloge auch in 'unsicheren Zeiten' nicht verzichtbar. Entsprechend versteht sich die Einführung als Hilfe für Unterricht, Fortbildung und Praxis in Zeiten des Umbruchs und der Entwicklung. Sie möge deshalb auch denen dienen, die nicht unmittelbar mit der Katalogisierung zu tun haben, aber Zusammenhänge erkennen wollen und Entscheidungen zu treffen haben

- Abstract
- Is this book sociology, anthropology, or taxonomy? Sorting Things Out, by communications theorists Geoffrey C. Bowker and Susan Leigh Star, covers a lot of conceptual ground in its effort to sort out exactly how and why we classify and categorize the things and concepts we encounter day to day. But the analysis doesn't stop there; the authors go on to explore what happens to our thinking as a result of our classifications. With great insight and precise academic language, they pick apart our information systems and language structures that lie deeper than the everyday categories we use. The authors focus first on the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), a widely used scheme used by health professionals worldwide, but also look at other health information systems, racial classifications used by South Africa during apartheid, and more. Though it comes off as a bit too academic at times (by the end of the 20th century, most writers should be able to get the spelling of McDonald's restaurant right), the book has a clever charm that thoughtful readers will surely appreciate. A sly sense of humor sneaks into the writing, giving rise to the chapter title "The Kindness of Strangers," for example. After arguing that categorization is both strongly influenced by and a powerful reinforcer of ideology, it follows that revolutions (political or scientific) must change the way things are sorted in order to throw over the old system. Who knew that such simple, basic elements of thought could have such far-reaching consequences? Whether you ultimately place it with social science, linguistics, or (as the authors fear) fantasy, make sure you put Sorting Things Out in your reading pile.

- Abstract
- Betrachtet wird der europäische Entwurf der Informationsgesellschaft in der Folge des EG-Weißbuches von 1993 und der Tagung in Korfu (1994). Es zeigt sich die zentrale Rolle des Informationsengineering. Hier geht es um die Produktion, Speicherung, Verteilung und Abfrage von Informationen. Wirtschaftliche Kennziffern beleuchten den deutschen Informationsmarkt (Online-Datenbanken, CD-ROM, Videotex, professionelle Informationsvermittlung). Die Relevanz elektronischer Informationsdienste für die betriebswirtschaftliche Praxis (Branchen- und Konkurrenzanalysen, Benchmarking) wird anhand von konkreten Beispielrecherchen demonstriert. Elektronische Datenbanken gestatten, die wissenschaftliche Forschung im Rahmen der Wissenschaftsevaluation mittels Publikations- Zitations- oder Themenanalysen zu beschreiben und zu bewerten. Ein Kapitel beschreibt detailliert diejenigen Tätigkeiten, die beim Auf- und Ausbau elektronischer Informationsdienste routinemäßig durchgeführt werden, mit dem Ziel, Qualitätsmerkmale für die Informationstätigkeit abzuleiten. Die Komplexität der Informationstätigkeiten führt u.a. in Bereiche der fuzzy logic und der Informationshermeneutik. Abgeschlossen wird das Buch mit einer 'Anatomie' einer konkreten Datenbank. Beispiel ist die ifo Literaturdatenbank, die erfolgreich bei mehreren Hosts als Online-Datenbank sowie zusätzlich als CD-ROM Datenbank vermarktet wird

- Für alle Bibliotheken der Bundesrepublik Deutschland wurde ein einheitliches System der Titelaufnahme entwickelt: die RAK. Seit der Einführung der EDV im Bibliothekswesen und durch die verstärkte Zusammenarbeit in Verbünden und Netzen hat die Standardisierung der Katalogisierung noch mehr an Bedeutung gewonnen. In der Broschüre wird versucht, aus dem recht komplizierten und umfangreichen Regelwerk diejenigen Teile herauszugreifen, die für Schulbibliotheken relevant sind. - Das Information Retrieval steht in theoretischer und praktischer Hinsicht im Zentrum der Informationswissenschaft. Das Buch vereinigt beide Bereiche, indem es seinen praktischen Ausgang von realen Situationen der Online-Informationsvermittlung nimmt und zugleich einen wichtigen Beitrag zu einer Theorie der Frageformulierung in Information Retrieval an sich leistet. - Dieser Band gibt einen Überblick über 500 Jahre deutsche Buchhandelsgeschichte, über das Schreiben, Herstellen, Verkaufen und Lesen von Büchern. Angesprochen werden nicht nur Fachleute, sondern alle, die Interesse an Büchern und Literatur haben. Buchhandelsgeschichte bedeutet für Wittmann nicht nur eine Geschichte der (Sortiments-)Buchhandlungen. Buchhandel meint hier die Gesamtprozesse der Vermittlung von geistigem Kulturgut eines Autors über die materielle Speicherung dieses geistigen Produkts in Form von Büchern, die Finanzierung und Verbreitung durch Verlage und Sortimentsbuchhandlungen bis hin zum Leser. Wittmann teilt das von ihm behandelte halbe Jahrtausend seit Erfindung des Buchdrucks in zwölf Epochen auf und geht in jedem seiner Kapitel eben nicht nur auf Fragen der Herstellung und Verbreitung von Büchern ein (also die eigentliche Druck-, Verlags- und Buchhandelsgeschichte), sondern stellt auch jeweils fundierte Reflexionen über das Bild und die Rolle von Autoren sowie die Erwartungshaltungen, Vorlieben und Kenntnisse der Leser an. Dieser weite Blickwinkel bedingt natürlich, dass das dargebotenen Material für die jeweiligen Epochen nicht sehr ausführlich sein kann. Wittmann beschränkt sich häufig auf prägnante Beispiele für die jeweiligen Forschungsperspektiven. Seine Vorgehensweise bietet jedoch andererseits einen großen Vorteil: Dieses Buch ist eine interessante Lektüre nicht nur für Leute, die sich direkt für Buchhandelsgeschichte interessieren, sondern auch für solche, die einen Blick auf den Wandel des Autoren- und Leserbildes in der deutschen Gesellschaft der letzten 500 Jahre werfen wollen.
