Orientierungshilfen und Wegweiser gibt es also viele, sowohl online als auch über traditionellere Medien wie dem Buch. Auch das vorliegende Werk von Anna-Katharina Weilenmann ordnet sich in diese Kategorie von Internet-Führern ein. Auf rund 200 Seiten werden Einstiege in verschiedenste Themen der Wissenschaft angeboten. Über so genannte Subject Gateways - nennen wir sie schlicht Themen-Portale - werden Wissenschaftsdisziplinen erschlossen, meist in einer kurzen, aber präzisen Beschreibung der online-Ressource. Jedes Sachgebiet wird zudem um Lexika, Enzyklopädien, Bibliographien und Datenbanken ergänzt. Die Ordnung der Sachgebiete orientiert sich an der Dewey Dezimalklassifikation. Die Bandbreite der Sachgebiete ist dementsprechend groß und orientiert sich an der Wissenschaft: - Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft - Philosophie und Psychologie, Religion / Theologie - Sozialwissenschaften, Soziologie, Politik - Wirtschaft, Recht - Erziehung, Ethnologie, Sprache, Literaturwissenschaft - Mathematik, Physik, Chemie, Biologie - Technik - Medizin - Landwirtschaft, Informatik - Kunst, Architektur, Musik, Theater, Film - Sport - Geschichte Geographie, Reisen Bei der Auswahl der einzelnen Web-Quellen ließ sich die Autorin von Qualitätskriterien wie Alter der Webseite, der Zuverlässigkeit der Inhalte, der Aktualität aber auch von der Art der Trägerschaft leiten. Webseiten mit einem akademischen Hintergrund standen daher im Vordergrund, waren aber nicht ausschließlich vertreten. So finden sich auch Webseiten kommerzieller Anbieter (z.B. Scopus von Elsevier) oder auch anderer öffentlicher, nicht-akademischer Institutionen (wie der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek mit Ariadne) im Webseiten-Verzeichnis. Rund 200 deutsch- und englischsprachige Einträge werden im Buch genauer beschrieben, mit Informationen zum Inhalt des Angebots, der Urheberschaft und Angabe möglicher Kosten. Auch weiterführende Links werden häufig angeführt. Ein einführendes Kapitel zur Informationsrecherche rundet dieses gelungene Buch ab.
Empfehlung: Das Buch eignet sich meiner Meinung nach gut als Ausgangspunkt für die Recherche in einem noch unbekannten Sachgebiet. Zum einen, weil ein Sachgebiet von recht wenigen, dafür von der Autorin gut ausgesuchten Web-Quellen eingerahmt wird. Zum anderen, weil hier von vertrauenswürdigen Webseiten ausgegangen werden kann. Man kann es auch anders sagen: dieses Buch gehört möglichst nahe an jede InternetArbeitsstation. Aufgrund der Dynamik des Themas - Links und Webseiten können recht rasch "altern" - hat dieses Buch natürlich eine fast schon natürliche Lebensdauer. Hier wäre es interessant, und das ist weniger ein Hinweis an die Autorin als vielmehr ein Wink an den Verlag, die so detailreich beschriebenen Quellen auch online zugänglich zu machen, nämlich in der Form von Bookmarks, die von den Leserlnnen auf eigene Bookmarking-Tools übernommen werden könnten. Entweder ganz einfach als Favoriten im eigenen Browser oder zu elaborierten Werkzeugen wie Rollyo, wo individuelle Suchdienste basierend auf selbst erstellten Searchrolls bedient werden könnten. - Ob wir spazieren gehen, einkaufen oder uns unterhalten - ständig teilen wir die Lebewesen und Dinge, die uns umgeben, ein in verschiedene Kategorien: Bäume und Blumen, Milchprodukte und Gemüse, sympathische Menschen und unsympathische. - Abstract
- Die Entstehung von Social Software ermöglicht es Nutzern, in großem Umfang im Netz zu publizieren. Bisher liegen aber nur wenige empirische Befunde zu funktionalen Eigenschaften sowie Qualitätsaspekten von Nutzerbeiträgen im Kontext von Informationsmanagement und Information Retrieval vor. Diese Arbeit diskutiert grundlegende Partizipationsformen, präsentiert empirische Studien über Social Tagging, Blogbeiträge sowie Relevanzbeurteilungen und entwickelt Design und Implementierung einer "sozialen" Informationsarchitektur für ein partizipatives Onlinehilfesystem.

- Abstract
- An original methodological framework for approaching the archived web, both as a source and as an object of study in its own right. As life continues to move online, the web becomes increasingly important as a source for understanding the past. But historians have yet to formulate a methodology for approaching the archived web as a source of study. How should the history of the present be written? In this book, Niels Brügger offers an original methodological framework for approaching the web of the past, both as a source and as an object of study in its own right. While many studies of the web focus solely on its use and users, Brügger approaches the archived web as a semiotic, textual system in order to offer the first book-length treatment of its scholarly use. While the various forms of the archived web can challenge researchers' interactions with it, they also present a range of possibilities for interpretation. The Archived Web identifies characteristics of the online web that are significant now for scholars, investigates how the online web became the archived web, and explores how the particular digitality of the archived web can affect a historian's research process. Brügger offers suggestions for how to translate traditional historiographic methods for the study of the archived web, focusing on provenance, creating an overview of the archived material, evaluating versions, and citing the material. The Archived Web lays the foundations for doing web history in the digital age, offering important and timely guidance for today's media scholars and tomorrow's historians.

Der Autor, Tom Alby, versucht daher im ersten Kapitel auch einen Unterschied zum Vorgänger-Web aufzubauen: Was ist so anders im Web 2.0? In weiterer Folge handelt Alby alle Themen ab, die mit Web 2.0 in Verbindung gebracht werden: Blogging, Podcasting, Social Software, Folksonomies, das Web als Plattform und diverse Web 2.0 typische Technologien. Ein Ausblick auf das Web 3.0 darf auch nicht fehlen. Das Buch liefert hier die notwendigen Einführungen und "Brücken", um auch als Laie zumindest ansatzweise Verständnis für diese neuen Entwicklungen aufzubringen. Daher ist es nur konsequent und sehr passend, dass Alby neben seinem technischen Fachjargon auch leicht verständliche Einführungsbeispiele bereithält. Denn es geht Alby weniger um Technologie und Tools (diese werden aber auch behandelt, eben beispielhaft), sondern vor allem um Konzepte: Was will das Web 2.0 überhaupt und was macht seinen Erfolg aus? Das Buch ist einfach zu lesen, mit zahlreichen Illustrationen bebildert und listet eine Unmenge an online Quellen für eine weitere Vertiefung auf. Doch mit Büchern über das Web ist es genauso wie dem Web selbst: die Halbwertszeit ist sehr kurz. Das gilt insbesondere für die Technik und für mögliche Dienste. Alby hat diesen technischen Zweig der Web 2.0-Geschichte so umfangreich wie für das Verständnis nötig, aus Gründen der Aktualität aber so gering wie möglich ausfallen lassen. Und das ist gut so: dieses Buch können Sie getrost auch in drei Jahren in die Hand nehmen. Es wird zwar andere Dienste geben als im Buch angegeben, und manche Links werden vielleicht nicht mehr funktionieren, die Prinzipien des Web 2.0 bleiben aber dieselben. Sollten Sie sich geändert haben, dann haben wir schon Web 2.x oder gar Web 3.0. Aber das ist eine andere Geschichte, die uns vielleicht Tom Alby zur angemessenen Zeit weitergeben möchte. Ein Bonus, wie ich finde, sind die zahlreichen Interviews, die Tom Alby mit bekannten deutschen Web 2.0 Aushängeschildern geführt hat. Sie geben einen guten Einblick, welchen Stellenwert Web 2.0 in der Zwischenzeit gewonnen hat. Nicht nur in einer Nische von Web-Freaks, sondern in der Welt der Kommunikation. Und das sind wir."

- Abstract
- Im Dezember 2003 fand in Genf die erste Phase des UN-Weltgipfels zur Informationsgesellschaft (WSIS) statt. Die Gipfelkonferenz, an der mehr als 11.000 Vertreter von Regierungen, der privaten Wirtschaft und der Zivilgesellschaft teilnahmen, verhandelte u. a. Themen wie die Überwindung der digitalen Spaltung, Menschenrechte im Informationszeitalter, geistige Eigentumsrechte, Cyberkriminalität und Internet Governance. Das vorliegende Buch stellt den WSIS-Gipfel in den historischen Kontext 200-jähriger internationaler Verhandlungen zur Regulierung grenzüberschreitender Kommunikation -- von den Karlsbader Verträgen 1819 bis zur Entstehung des Internets. Es beschreibt die spannenden und kontroversen Auseinandersetzungen darüber, wie das Internet reguliert, Menschenrechte im Informationszeitalter garantiert, Sicherheit im Cyberspace gewährleistet, geistiges Eigentum geschützt und die digitale Spaltung überbrückt werden soll. Kleinwächter lässt keinen Zweifel daran, dass der WSIS-Kompromiss von Genf nicht mehr ist als der Beginn eines langen Prozesses zur Gestaltung der globalen Informationsgesellschaft der Zukunft. Die zweite Phase des Gipfeltreffens findet im November 2005 in Tunis statt. Das Buch enthält im Anhang die vom Gipfel verabschiedete Deklaration und den Aktionsplan sowie die von der Zivilgesellschaft angenommene Erklärung zur Zukunft der Informationsgesellschaft.

- Information und Wissen sind die Grundbausteine der Wissensgesellschaft. Die Art und Weise, wie der Umgang mit diesen Ressourcen organisiert wird, ist gegenwärtig die Kernfrage weltweiter gesellschaftlicher, politischer, kultureller und wirtschaftlicher Auseinandersetzungen. Die digitale Revolution und das Internet haben die Voraussetzungen Wissen zu kommunizieren, also zu verbreiten und mit anderen zu teilen, grundlegend verändert und vereinfacht. Sie haben einen ungeahnten Kreativitäts- und Innovationsschub ausgelöst, der weit reichende Auswirkungen auf unser Leben und unsere Kultur haben wird. Diese Entwicklung wollen Vertreter der Informationswirtschaft, die sich durch die "wunderbare Wissensvermehrung" bedroht fühlen, zurückdrehen. Der Kampf ums "geistige Eigentum" und um die Kontrolle des Internet - und seiner Fortentwicklung - sind momentan daher wichtige politische Arenen auf globaler Ebene. Dieses Buch ist ein Plädoyer für die Innovationsfreiheit. Die Beiträge beleuchten, welche kreativen und innovativen Kräfte dem "Geist" des Internet bisher entsprungen sind. Die entstandene Public Domain des Wissens gilt es auszubauen und allen Menschen zugänglich zu machen. - Abstract
- Für Webseiten ist, wie für alle interaktiven Anwendungen vom einfachen Automaten bis zur komplexen Software, die Benutzerfreundlichkeit von zentraler Bedeutung. Allerdings wird eine sinnvolle Benutzung von Informationsangeboten im World Wide Web häufig durch "cooles Design" unnötig erschwert, weil zentrale Punkte der Benutzerfreundlichkeit (Usability) vernachlässigt werden. Durch Usability Evaluation kann die Benutzerfreundlichkeit von Webseiten und damit auch die Akzeptanz bei den Benutzern verbessert werden. Ziel ist die Gestaltung von ansprechenden benutzerfreundlichen Webangeboten, die den Benutzern einen effektiven und effizienten Dialog ermöglichen. Das Buch bietet eine praxisorientierte Einführung in die Web Usability Evaluation und beschreibt die Anwendung ihrer verschiedenen Methoden.

- Abstract
- Virtuelle Fachbibliotheken spielen in Deutschland bei der fachlichen Informationsversorgung eine wichtige Rolle. Auf Grund ihres Anspruchs, als hybride Bibliotheken sowohl Print-Medien als auch elektronische Publikationsformen nachzuweisen bzw einen Zugang zu diesen anzubieten, stellen sie für Fachwissenschaftler eine wichtige Anlaufstelle ihrer Literaturrecherchen dar. Virtuelle Fachbibliotheken für über 20 Wissenschaftsdisziplinen bekunden dies mittlerweile. Sie stehen für die Übertragung des deutschen Sondersammelgebietssystems (SSG-System) ins Internet-Zeitalter. Für die Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft gibt es in Deutschland gegenwärtig noch keine Virtuelle Fachbibliothek. Die Fragestellung dieses Beitrags ist, ob eine Virtuelle Fachbibliothek für diesen Fachbereich notwendig ist und wenn ja, wie sie idealtypisch aufgebaut sein könnte. Dabei werden auch potenzielle Träger und Mitwirkende am Aufbau berücksichtigt.

- Abstract
- Mit der Deutschen Internetbibliothek soll einer breiten Öffentlichkeit ein allgemeines Themenportal im Netz zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Ähnlich wie das jüngst eröffnete Portal Vascoda als Dienstleistung der wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken und Informationseinrichtungen wird auch die Deutsche Internetbibliothek in Kooperation erstellt und gepflegt: Rund siebzig deutsche und österreichische Öffentliche Bibliotheken suchen nach relevanten Internetquellen, bewerten und rubrizieren einschlägige Angebote im Web - ein erstes Resümee nach fast einjährigem Betrieb des »Wissensportals der Bibliotheken«.

- Bibliotheken weltweit befinden sich im Wandel. Der Trend der Nutzer, Informationen immer häufiger zuerst, und teilweise sogar ausschließlich, im Internet zu suchen, erfordert Veränderungen in der Konzeption des bibliothekarischen Informationsdienstes. Um den Nutzer dann und dort zu erreichen, wo er Hilfe benötigt, bieten viele Bibliotheken bereits Digital Reference Service, digitalen Auskunftsdienst, an. Zumeist erfolgt dieser allerdings institutionsbezogen von einzelnen Bibliotheken, die dadurch auf synergetische Effekte und Vorteile durch Zusammenarbeit verzichten. Abhilfe könnten Informationsverbünde schaffen, in denen mehrere Bibliotheken arbeitsteilig digitalen Auskunftsdienst anbieten. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die Entwicklung solcher Digital Reference Konsortien in den USA näher zu beleuchten. Um den Einstieg in die Thematik zu erleichtern, werden in einem theoretischen Teil zuerst die Begrifflichkeiten geklärt und die verschiedenen Formen des Digital Reference Service dargestellt. Im weiteren Verlauf der Arbeit wird dann die praktische Anwendung des digitalen Informationsdienstes diskutiert. Zu diesem Zweck wurden repräsentativ zwei innovative US-amerikanische Projekte ausgewählt, die detailliert vorgestellt werden. Ein kurzer Überblick über die historische Entwicklung digitaler Informationsverbünde in den USA soll dabei als Hintergrund für die Einordnung der präsentierten Dienste dienen. Die Erfahrungen, die in diesen sehr unterschiedlichen Projekten gemacht worden sind, dienen anschließend als Basis für Überlegungen, wie derartige Konsortien in Deutschland aufgebaut werden könnten. Organisatorische und strukturelle Anregungen an das deutsche Bibliothekswesen zum Aufbau von kooperativen digitalen Auskunftsdiensten runden die vorliegende Arbeit ab.

Wirklichkeit ist kein fester Begriff mehr, den man sich sicher sein sollte; Wirklichkeit ist ein Netz voller Spannungen und Gegenspannungen, die erst in der Konstruktion dieser ihre Existenz konstituieren. Die Welten des Cyberspace wurden nach dem Platzen der New Economy-Blase allzu sehr unterschätzt, was dem Gegenstand allerdings einfach nicht gebührt. Gerade weil wir nicht wissen, wohin die Reise geht, kommt es darauf an, diesen Vorteil effizient auszunutzen - wie das geschehen kann, zeigt in der gegenwärtigen deutschen Virtualitätsliteratur niemand anderes besser als der Bonner Publizist Goedart Palm. Fazit: Unbedingt lesen! Wer das nicht tut, verpasst etwas.
