    Abstract
    Die Deutsche Bibliothek benutzt seit der Einspielung ihrer Personennamen die nationale Normdatei für Personennamen (PND) integriert für die Katalogisierung. Der seit Beginn der redaktionellen Arbeiten an der PND laufenden Diskussion über die Erfassung von Normdatensätzen für einzelnen Personen und deren Verwendung in der Formalerschließung wollen Die Deutschen Bibliothek eine statistisch belegte Grundlage verschaffen und hat deshalb einen Test zur Ermittlung ihres Aufwands für die erweiterte Individualisierung durchgeführt. Der Test ermöglicht Aussagen über den Zeitaufwand und das Verhältnis von nichtindividualisierten zu individualisierten Datensätzen an Der Deutschen Bibliothek und belegt, daß der hauptsächliche Aufwand bei der retrospektiven Zuordnung von Titeln anfällt. Die Deutsche Bibliothek spricht sich auf der Grundlage des Tests für die Fortführung der Individualisierung aus

    Abstract
    Argues that the efforts to achieve authority control in online catalogues are both misguided and counterproductive. Contrasts the characteristics of manual and online catalogues, demonstrating that although authority control may be beneficial in a traditional, manually produced catalogue, it is of little or no value in the online environment. Suggests that in future authority control may be dispensed with, thus releasing professional library staff from routine cataloguing tasks and leading to a greater integration of library services

    Abstract
    Discusses the function of MARC field 670 in providing AACR authority control in OPACs through the AAAF: where field 670 is used to justify the form of content of established headings and their cross references. Reports results of a study of field 670 entries from national name authority records pertaining to the subject area of the Catholic Church in terms of: the number of field 670 entries per record; types of work cited; and information on the work themselves. Results indicate that considerable differences exist among the categories of authority records, with some (modern personal names and uniform titles) being more amenable to computerized generation. It was found possible to identify tentatively a core reference for authority work in a subject area

    Abstract
    Outlines the benefits sought by the Anglo American Authority File (AAF) project in replacing with a common authority file the Library of Congress US Name Authority File (USNAF) and the British Library Name Authority List (BLNAL). Describes the progress and techniques in the implementation of the project to create the AAF in the British Library (BL) and explains how it is used by cataloguers. Phase 1 was completed in 1996 with the loading of USNAF. Records were in USMARC format but searchable and reusable in conjunction with BLNAL. Phase 2 to eliminate duplicates was completed in 1997 for personal names and corporate names will be dealt with in 1999 when the BL Corporate Bibliographic System is also due to go live. This will prepare the ground for Phase 3, retrospective conversion to integrate BLNAL with USNAF into a single unified file

    Abstract
    This paper proposes an approach for managing vocabulary for reference databases on the Web. The approach is directed at domain specific databases in which much of the referenced material remains in non-digital form. A combination of interactive and manual processes are outlined along with a proposed implementation approach. For this limited class of databases, it is suggested that the approach can significantly improve vocabulary management with relatively low costs in manual effort.

    Abstract
    A sample was taken of the name and title provisional, or minimal level, authority records created by Blackwell North America, Inc., during its authority control processing in preparation for the implementation of NOTIS at the State Univerity of New York at Buffalo Libraries. Analysis of the sample showed that approximately 10 % of theses provisional records were created unnecessarily, while approximately 7 % had Library of Congress Name Authority File recordsestablished since the vendor's work was completed. The remaining 83 %, which will require original authority work in order to be upgraded to 'full' status, are categorized in such a manner as to determine the best approach to achieving the libraries' goal of absolute authority control.
