- Abstract
- Das Handbuch zur Regensburger Verbundklassifikation (RVK) ist unverzichtbar und wird angesichts des jahrelangen Bestehens dieser Klassifikation, der großen und weiter wachsenden Zahl ihrer Anwender und ihrem - auch supranational - zunehmenden Bekanntheitsgrad auf neuem Stand benötigt. Daher wird das Handbuch nun in zweiter, überarbeiteter Auflage vorgelegt. Diese Publikation entspricht auch dem Interesse vieler Institutionen an ihrer Bibliothek, vor allem soweit sie sich als Freihandbibliothek im Sinne einer Bestands- und Wissensrepräsentation erweist. Zweifellos bildet die RVK für die moderne Klassifikationspraxis und die Umsetzung der notwendigen Prinzipien ein wesentliches Paradigma. Die einzelnen Fachsystematiken der RVK sind im Handbuch unterschiedlich ausführlich dargestellt und sollen auch in ihrem jeweils verschiedenen Umfang über die Jahrzehnte hin, durchaus differierende Anforderungen der Verbundpartner bei der Optimierung zeigen.

- Abstract
- "Teaching Library" - dies ist nicht nur der Titel dieses Buches, sondern vor allem auch eine selbstbewusste Behauptung in einem Land, in dem die Politik die Bibliotheken als Partner des Lernens noch nicht entdeckt hat, in dem die kommunalen Gremien in Zeiten des Sparens die Ausgaben für Bibliotheken als angeblich freiwillige Leistungen in dem Feld der Kultur neben Museen und Theatern munter kürzen. Dabei belegen die internationalen Studien (PISA, TIMSS etc.) zur Leistungsfähigkeit von Bildungssystemen bereits jetzt schon erhebliche Defizite des deutschen Bildungswesens, insbesondere hinsichtlich der Schlüsselqualifikationen, die unter "Literacy" gefasst werden. Als notwendige Antwort auf dieses Defizit empfehlen die Autoren dieses Buches die viel pointiertere Einbindung der gesamten Bibliotheken in Deutschland in unser Bildungssystem, um sowohl die Unentbehrlichkeit zu unterstreichen, als auch Synergien mit anderen Bildungsträgern zu nutzen. Das vorliegende Buch zeigt eindrucksvoll die erstaunliche Vielfalt der Initiativen und den Einfallsreichtum der Bibliothekare in dieser Hinsicht.

- Abstract
- Document representations for text classification are typically based on the classical Bag-Of-Words paradigm. This approach comes with deficiencies that motivate the integration of features on a higher semantic level than single words. In this paper we propose an enhancement of the classical document representation through concepts extracted from background knowledge. Boosting is used for actual classification. Experimental evaluations on two well known text corpora support our approach through consistent improvement of the results.

- Abstract
- Nahezu unbeachtet in der gesamten bibliothekswissenschaftlichen Literatur blieb bislang ein Arbeitsschritt der Inhaltserschließung, obgleich er ihren Ausgangspunkt bildet und damit von grundlegender Bedeutung ist: die Analyse des Inhalts von Dokumenten. Klare Aussagen über den Inhalt und die Beschaffenheit eines Dokuments auf der Basis fundierter Kriterien treffen zu können, ist das Anliegen von Langridges, nunmehr erstmalig in deutscher Übersetzung vorliegendem Werk. Gestützt auf ein Fundament philosophisch abgeleiteter Wissensformen, zeigt Langridge anhand einer Vielzahl konkreter Beispiele Wege - aber auch Irrwege- auf, sich dem Inhalt von Dokumenten zu nähern und zu Resultaten zu gelangen, die dank objektiver Kriterien überprüfbar werden. - Abstract
- Although service-oriented architectures go a long way toward providing interoperability in distributed, heterogeneous environments, managing semantic differences in such environments remains a challenge. We give an overview of the issue of semantic interoperability (integration), provide a semantic characterization of services, and discuss the role of ontologies. Then we analyze four basic models of semantic interoperability that differ in respect to their mapping between service descriptions and ontologies and in respect to where the evaluation of the integration logic is performed. We also provide some guidelines for selecting one of the possible interoperability models.

- Abstract
- Seit 1988 gibt es das Förderprogramm 'Altbestandserschließung' (ABE) der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft. Mit dieser Publikation ist zum einen beabsichtigt, über den Stand des ABE-Programms der DFG zu berichten und die bislang erreichten Ergebnisse des Unternehmens zu reflektieren. Auf der anderen Seite ist intendiert, Bibliotheken, die keine Konversion ihrer Kataloge aus Eigenmitteln beabsichtigen, konkrete Anregungen und praktische Hinweise für die Planung, Organisation und Durchführung der Arbeiten zu geben. Der Text gliedert sich in einen allgmeinen Teil, in dem über die Ausgangssituation und die Zielperspektive bei der Einrichtung des Programms, über Auswahlkriterien, Organisation und die konkreten Arbeitsgrundsätze informaiert wird. Es folgt ein ausführlicher spezieller Teil, zu dem alle derzeit in dem Programm geförderten Bibliotheken ihre Berichte beigesteuert haben. Abschließend wird eine kritische Zwischenbilanz aus der Sicht einzelner Projekte gezogen, in der über bislang erreichte Ergebnisse und - aus der Sicht des Förderers und seiner Gremien - über Erkenntnisse zur Umsetzung und Steuerung eines solchen Programms berichtet wird

- Abstract
- Das Problem der Wahrnehmung und Darstellung von Wahrheit durch die Medien führt zu vier zentralen Fragen: Wie viel Wahrheit gibt es in der Welt, über die Journalisten berichten müssen? Wie ermittelt oder recherchiert man diese Wahrheit? Wie trennt man die Spreu vom Weizen? Und wie geht man als Journalist mit dem um, was man als Wahrheit erkannt hat oder erkannt zu haben glaubt? Hier gibt es ganz offensichtlich eine Parallele zwischen Journalisten und Wissenschaftlern. Journalisten und Wissenschaftler brauchen erstens Hypothesen, zweitens geeignete Hypothesentests, drittens ein gutes Abgrenzungs-Kriterium und viertens Verfahren, um die erkannten Sachverhalte auf angemessene Weise für eine Kommunikation mit anderen zu repräsentieren, das heißt sie darzustellen. Es gibt zwei große Unterschiede zwischen Journalisten und Wissenschaftlern: Journalisten sind in der Regel auf raum-zeitlich begrenzte Aussagen aus, Wissenschaftler in der Regel auf raumzeitlich unbegrenzte Gesetze. Aber diese Unterschiede sind fließend, weil Wissenschaftler raum-zeitlich begrenzte Aussagen brauchen, um ihre All-Aussagen zu überprüfen, und Journalisten sich immer häufiger auf das Feld der allgemeinen Gesetzes-Aussagen wagen oder doch zumindest Kausalinterpretationen für soziale Phänomene anbieten. Der zweite Unterschied besteht darin, dass die Wissenschaft weitgehend professionalisiert ist (zumindest gilt dies uneingeschränkt für die Naturwissenschaften und die Medizin), was ihr relativ klare Abgrenzungs- und Güte-Kriterien beschert hat. Diese fehlen weitgehend im Journalismus.

- Abstract
- PC-Katalogisierung mit RAK ist ein Praxis-Handbuch und wendet sich an Benutzer mit folgenden Anwendungsbedürfnissen: 1) PC-Einsatz, konfiguriert nach dem DBI- Pflichtenheft. 2) Softwareeinsatz für Programmierer, Softwarehäuser, Bibliotheken, Dokumentationsstellen, Institutionen. 3) Praktischer Ratgeber für Katalogisierer in Bibliotheken. Das Buch setzt eine gewisse Regelkenntnis für RAK-Definition voraus. Es ersetzt kein RAK-Lehrbuch. In den Anhängen befindet sich ua ein EDV- Glossar, eine Liste der Deskriptionszeichen, ein Stoppwortregister sowie Literaturhinweise.

- Abstract
- Der vorliegende Leitfaden zur Vergabe der DDC-Sachgruppen in der Deutschen Nationalbibliografie und dem Neuerscheinungsdienst ersetzt ab Heft 1, Bibliografie-Jahrgang 2004 der Deutschen Nationalbibliografie den 1994 in zweiter Auflage erschienenen Leitfaden "Sachgruppen der Deutschen Nationalbibliographie". Basierend auf diesem Text entstandenTextteil und Register des aktuellen Leitfadens mit Unterstützung der Fachreferentinnen und Fachreferenten Der Deutschen Bibliothek in Frankfurt und Leipzig und der Schweizerischen Landesbibliothek in Bern. Er soll Bibliotheken, Verlagen und Buchhandel in den drei deutschsprachigen Ländern als Hilfsmittel zur sachlichen Zuordnung und Recherche von Neuerscheinungen dienen. Auch die Österreichische Bibliographie und das Schweizer Buch bedienen sich mit geringfügigen Abweichungen der hier vorgestellten DDC-Sachgruppen. In den deutschsprachigen Ländern gehört die Dewey-Dezimalklassifikation bisher nicht zu den im bibliothekarischen Alltag geläufigen Arbeitsinstrumenten. Mit ihrer Übersetzung ins Deutsche und ihrer zunehmenden Nutzung in den nächsten Jahren werden viele der im Folgenden geregelten Sachverhalte bekannter und damit einfacher in der Handhabung. Trotzdem werden sich zusätzliche Anregungen für Eintragungen im Register und Hauptteil dieses Leitfadens im Zuge der laufenden Arbeit damit sicherlich auch in Zukunft ergeben, wie sich auch Fehler und Ungenauigkeiten nicht vermeiden lassen. Für Hinweise, Korrekturen und Ergänzungswünsche sind wir daher dankbar.
