    Abstract
    Nach Einführungen zu Jugend und Internet, Medienkompetenz und Lernen durch Medien, wird im praktischen Teil eine schriftliche Umfrage unter 90 Schülern eines Gymnasiums und einer Gesamtschule über deren Internetnutzung für schulische Zwecke analysiert. Suchpraxis, Einbindung des Internets in den schulischen Alltag, Unterschiede bei Geschlechtern und Schulformen werden besonders untersucht. Die Auswertung ergibt selbstbewußte Grundeinstellung der Schüler zum Internet, eher privat als schulisch genutzt, geschätzt wegen Schnelligkeit, Informationsmenge und Spaßfaktor bei Fixierung auf die Suchmaschine Google. Die Schüler geben sich meistens mit den gefundenen Ergebnissen zufrieden, stellen deren Qualität nicht weiter in Frage.

    Abstract
    Unsere Medienwelt ist vom Nebeneinander verschiedener Ausgabeformen derselben Inhalte geprägt. Es herrscht jedoch Mangel an Untersuchungen, welche die "usability" von Printmedien mit der von Online-Medien direkt vergleichen. Im Rahmen eines Projektseminars am Institut fürBibliothekswissenschaft der Humboldt- Universität Berlin wurde die Usability von gedruckten und von Online-Informationsmitteln anhand heuristischer Kriterien verglichen. Als Benutzungsaspekte bündelndes und messbares Kriterium wurde der Zeitbedarf zur Beantwortung einfacher Testaufgaben ermittelt, die sowohl anhand der Print- als auch anhand der Online-Version je eines Versandhauskatalogs und eines Vorlesungsverzeichnisses zu beantworten waren. Die Prognosen sowie die Ergebnisse dreier Gruppen (Bibliothekswissenschaft-Studenten, Informatik-Studenten und Laien) wurden verglichen. Der Zeitbedarf für die Nutzung der Printmedien wurde von den Bibliothekswissenschaft- und Informatik-Studenten zu hoch prognostiziert, für Online-Medien zu niedrig. Der tatsächliche Zeitbedarf bewegte sich in ähnlicher Größenordnung bei beiden Versionen des Vorlesungsverzeichnisses. Bei der Nutzung des Versandhauskatalogs hingegen war der Zeitbedarf online doppelt so hoch wie beim Printmedium. Zusätzlich war bei Nutzung der Online-Version die Hälfte der Antworten falsch. Der Grad an subjektiver Unsicherheit über die Richtigkeit der Antworten wurde, damit übereinstimmend, bei der Online-Version deutlich höher eingeschätzt als beim Printmedium. Die Testergebnisse derdrei Gruppen unterschieden sich beim Versandhauskatalog nur wenig. Die Ergebnisse werden als Hinweis auf schlechten Entwicklungsstand der Usability von Online-Medien gedeutet. Die Usabilityvon konventionellen Medien scheint von "computernahen" Nutzern unterschätzt zu werden. Bei der Nutzung von Online-Medien wird in derLiteratur oft hohe subjektive Unsicherheit über die Angemessenheit oder Richtigkeit der Suchresultate berichtet, die hier bestätigt wird und zugleich mit einem hohen Anteil objektiv falscher Antworten korrespondiert. Es wird dafür plädiert in die Usability-Forschung konventionelle Medien einzubeziehen und stärker interdisziplinär vorzugehen.

    Abstract
    In diesem Beitrag wird eine Studie vorgestellt, die eine beobachtende Perspektive auf affektive Phänomene entlang des Websuchprozesses eröffnet. Untersuchungsgegenstände sind Art, Häufigkeit und Intensität von Gefühlsausschlägen, die Auslöser von emotionalen Reaktionen sowie der Zusammenhang zwischen Gefühlsausschlägen und bestimmten Aktionsmerkmalen. Die Websuche zeigt sich als gefühlsintensive Tätigkeit. Besonders häufige Auslöser von Gefühlsausschlägen stehen in enger Beziehung zu erwarteter Relevanz und Relevanzbewertung. Bei Auslösern von besonders intensiven emotionalen Reaktionen ist der optische Eindruck einer Webseite ein wichtiger Faktor. Weiterer Untersuchungsbedarf zeigt sich vor allem in der Frage der Rolle affektiver Vorgänge innerhalb des Relevanzkonzeptes.

    Abstract
    Deutschland unterliegt einem demographischen Wandel, der Anteil der über 50-Jährigen nimmt deutlich zu. Internetnutzer mit einem Alter von 50 Jahren oder älter werden als Silver Surfer bezeichnet. Im Zuge der fortschreitenden Digitalisierung gilt der kompetente Umgang mit dem Internet als Schlüsselqualifikation zur Erleichterung und Bereicherung des Lebens. Es werden Ergebnisse einer Befragung vorgestellt, die zu beantworten versucht, ob und in welchem Umfang Silver Surfer über Kompetenz im Umgang mit dem Internet verfügen. Bei der Befragung findet der Persona-Ansatz aus dem Bereich der Softwareentwicklung Anwendung. Ergebnis der Studie ist, dass die Generation 50+ unterschiedliche Interneterfahrungen aufweist und nicht als homogene Gruppe betrachtet werden kann.

    Abstract
    Gegenstand der empirischen Forschungsarbeit sind dargestellte wie empfundene Gefühle bei Videos. Sind Nutzer in der Lage, solche Gefühle derart konsistent zu erschließen, dass man deren Angaben für ein emotionales Videoretrieval gebrauchen kann? Wir arbeiten mit einem kontrollierten Vokabular für neun tionen (Liebe, Freude, Spaß, Überraschung, Sehnsucht, Trauer, Ärger, Ekel und Angst), einem Schieberegler zur Einstellung der jeweiligen Intensität des Gefühls und mit dem Ansatz der broad Folksonomy, lassen also unterschiedliche Nutzer die Videos taggen. Versuchspersonen bekamen insgesamt 20 Videos (bearbeitete Filme aus YouTube) vorgelegt, deren Emotionen sie indexieren sollten. Wir erhielten Angaben von 776 Probanden und entsprechend 279.360 Schiebereglereinstellungen. Die Konsistenz der Nutzervoten ist sehr hoch; die Tags führen zu stabilen Verteilungen der Emotionen für die einzelnen Videos. Die endgültige Form der Verteilungen wird schon bei relativ wenigen Nutzern (unter 100) erreicht. Es ist möglich, im Sinne der Power Tags die jeweils für ein Dokument zentralen Gefühle (soweit überhaupt vorhanden) zu separieren und für das emotionale Information Retrieval (EmIR) aufzubereiten.

    Abstract
    Suchmaschinen stellen eine wichtige Möglichkeit dar, um neue Informationen oder Webseiten im Internet zu finden. Das Online-Marketing wurde dadurch verstärkt auf das Suchmaschinen-Marketing ausgerichtet, bei dem vor allem darauf geachtet wird, dass man in Suchmaschinen gut sichtbar ist. Bei der effizienten Planung von Marketing-Aktionen ist es deshalb wichtig, nicht nur profunde Kenntnisse über die Funktionsweise von Suchmaschinen zu haben, sondern auch das Suchverhalten von Suchmaschinennutzern zu untersuchen und die Ergebnisse geeignet umzusetzen. In diesem Beitrag wird auf die Erforschung des Suchverhaltens im Web und auf die Interaktion von Menschen mit Suchmaschinen ab 1997 eingegangen. In erster Linie werden verschiedene Erhebungsmethoden erklärt und Analysen vorgestellt. Es wird auch diskutiert, wie die Ergebnisse umgesetzt werden können, um die Auffindbarkeit von Webseiten zu verbessern.

    Presents a recently composite view of several user studies in information retrieval. Contains personal conclusions and speculations based on these studies, rather than formal statistical results, which so often are not comparable from 1 experiment to another. Suggests a taxonomy of user characteristics for such studies, in order to make results comparable. Discusses methods and effects of user training, then manner of expression of a query or information need, conduct of a search, use of the system command language or its equivalent, analysis by the user of retrieved information, and user satisfaction with outcome. Concludes with suggestions for system design and experimental methodology

    Abstract
    This study focuses on the task as a fundamental factor in the context of information seeking. The purpose of the study is to characterize kinds of tasks and to examine how different kinds of task give rise to different kinds of information-seeking behavior on the Web. For this, a model for information-seeking behavior was used employing dimensions of information-seeking strategies (ISS), which are based on several behavioral dimensions. The analysis of strategies was based on data collected through an experiment designed to observe users' behaviors. Three tasks were assigned to 30 graduate students and data were collected using questionnaires, search logs, and interviews. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of the data identified 14 distinct information-seeking strategies. The analysis showed significant differences in the frequencies and patterns of ISS employed between three tasks. The results of the study are intended to facilitate the development of task-based information-seeking models and to further suggest Web information system designs that support the user's diverse tasks.

    Abstract
    Describes the technique used to study hypertext systems from a very general point of view, focus on monitoring searchers' behaviour, predict the estimation of the ultimate goals of the searchers, and estimate the searchers' determination to find these goals. The components are combined via a Markov chain approach so as to study information retrieval in general and hypertext (hypermedia) in particular. Demonstrates how these estimations can be used to assist searchers during their searching process and presents the derivation of a relevance function for documents, based on these estimations

    Abstract
    In der vorgestellten Studie aus dem Bereich des interaktiven Information Retrieval wurde erstmals die Erwartungshaltung von Suchmaschinennutzern als mögliche Determinante der Benutzerzufriedenheit untersucht. Das experimentelle Untersuchungsdesign basiert auf einem betriebswirtschaftlichen Modell, das die Entstehung von Kundenzufriedenheit durch die Bestätigung bzw. Nicht-Bestätigung von Erwartungen erklärt. Ein zentrales Ergebnis dieser Studie ist, das bei der Messung von Benutzerzufriedenheit besonders auf den Messzeitpunkt zu achten ist. Des Weiteren konnte ein von der Systemgüte abhängiger Adaptionseffekt hinsichtlich der Relevanzbewertung der Benutzer nachgewiesen werden.

    Abstract
    The degree of variability in the percentage of subject searching in an online public access catalog (OPAC) among branch libraries of one university was studied. A full semester's worth of transactions was analyzed, not sampled. The time units used were hour of the day, day of the week, and week of the semester. The findings show that subject searching varies from a low of 22% to a high of 74% over the hours of a day. Variability for the days of the week ranged from 17% to 64%, and for the weeks of the semester variability ranged from 12% to 70%. Valuable management information on the utilization of the OPAC within each brach library and among all the branch libraries is provided through numerous charts and graphs.

    Abstract
    In information needs, seeking and use (INSU) research, individuals have most commonly been perceived as users (e.g., Kuhlthau, 1991; Dervin & Nilan, 1986; Dervin, 1989; Belkin, 1980). The concept user originates from the user of libraries and other information services and information systems. Over the years the scope of the concept has become wider and it is nowadays often understood in the sense of seekers of information (e.g., Wilson, 1981; Marchionini, 1995) and users of information (e.g., Streatfield, 1983). Nevertheless, the concept has remained ambiguous by being on the one hand universal and on the other hand extremely specific. The purpose of this paper is to map and evaluate views on people whose information behaviour has been in one way or another the core of our research area. The goal is to shed some light on various relationships between the different aspects of doers in INSU studies. The paper is inspired by Dervin's (1997) analysis of context where she identified among other themes the nature of subject by contrasting a `transcendental individual' with a `decentered subject', and Talja's (1997) presentation about constituting `information' and `user' from the discourse analytic viewpoint as opposed to the cognitive viewpoint. Instead of the metatheoretical approach applied by Dervin and Talja, a more concrete approach is valid in the present analysis where no direct arguments for or against the underlying metatheories are itemised. The focus is on doers in INSU studies leaving other, even closely-related concepts (i.e., information, information seeking, knowledge etc.), outside the scope of the paper.

    Abstract
    In conjunction with the American Society for Information Science and Technology's (ASIST) annual meeting in fall 2001, the Special Interest Group an Information Needs, Seeking, and Use (SIG USE) sponsored a research symposium an "Effective Methods for Studying Information Seeking and Use." The symposium was intended to address the SIG's goal of promoting studies of human information behavior by focusing an the research methods that can most effectively be used to study information needs, information seeking, information use, and other human information behaviors. The symposium included the presentation of six refereed articles, which were revised based an the discussion at the symposium and are included here. The six articles describe the application of a variety of research methods, singly or in combination. Some of the methods are most appropriate for studying individuals and their interactions with information, while others can be applied to studying group behaviors. The studies were conducted in a variety of settings, from a Web-searching laboratory to an archive, from hospitals to the great outdoors (i.e., forest and river sites). Each method or set of methods was applied to a particular user group, including young children, teenagers, and adults. Each article makes a unique contribution to our repertoire of research methods, as briefly reviewed here.

    Abstract
    I started my professional career in library and information science because of my great interest in knowledge organization. The more experience I gained in the profession, the more I realized how crucial it is to understand which organization would be best for each group of users. This in turn requires an understanding of how users seek information. And so now my focus is an studying information seeking and searching behavior. Throughout the relatively long course of changing my focus, I followed Pauline Cochrane's writings. Now I can say that she has been among the first to have a "user-centered approach" to knowledge organization, and she has used the term three years before it became a mainstream phrase. The following is a short discussion about the usercentered approach which was presented in a workshop in 1997.

    Abstract
    Over the last 4 years, the Information Interaction Laboratory at Rutgers' School of communication, Information and Library Studies has performed a series of investigations concerned with various aspects of people's interactions with advanced information retrieval (IR) systems. We have benn especially concerned with understanding not just what people do, and why, and with what effect, but also with what they would like to do, and how they attempt to accomplish it, and with what difficulties. These investigations have led to some quite interesting conclusions about the nature and structure of people's interactions with information, about support for cooperative human-computer interaction in query reformulation, and about the value of visualization of search results for supporting various forms of interaction with information. In this discussion, I give an overview of the research program and its projects, present representative results from the projects, and discuss some implications of these results for support of subject searching in information retrieval systems
