    Abstract
Index Medicus, the abstract periodical published by the National Library of Medicine, could until recently only be consulted either in its printed version or on-line (Medline). Several versions of Medline on CD-ROM are now available, and the Biomedical Working Group of VOGIN (the Dutch Association of Users of Online Information Systems) has prepared this detailed comparison. Although CD-ROM is becoming more popular, many people are still unfamiliar with the new medium, and a number of authors have discussed the advantages and disadvantages of CD-ROM when compared with its on-line and printed equivalents.

    Abstract
A reprint of the introduction to Vol.IX of the author's 'History of Bibliography' (Storia della Bibliografia). Cites K. Popper's theory of the 3 worlds of reality, i.e the natural world; subjective experiences; and recorded information; arguing that over the past 50 years bibliography has been relegated to dealing with researches that relate to the 2nd world and has thus lost its true scientific character. We should restore to bibliography the attributes deriving from its roots and from its links with the 3rd world, so that it can be applied directly to the architectue of general semantics, which related both to ideas and documents

    Abstract
CD-ROM technology has great potential for storing and anabling access to the type of data contained in national bibliographies. Their ease of replication offer security as well as enabling the information contained to be made more widely availaible. Of the 2 methods used to convert print to electronic data, scanning and keying, Chagwyck-Healey use the latter. In the case of national bibliographies on CD-ROM, new records are created electronically and old records are converted by keying. Chadwyck-Healey have developed an extensive CD-ROM list, focusing on both bibliographic and full text literary works, and has produced national bibliographies on CD-ROM for the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain (with the Netherlands to appear shortly). National bibliographies on CD-ROM produced by other bodies are those of finland, Norway, Bulgarian, Singapore and the USA

    Abstract
The author was funded by the US Information Agency to assist the National Library of Namibia in the creation of a national bibliography. Work began in 1994 with the conversion of an existing database of Namibiana, NAMLIT, to CDS/ISIS which includes software using UNIMARC. This was to make possible the creation of new records, and enhance NAMLIT records for monographs or serials by using AACR2 and adding DDC numbers and LCSH headings. Describes the obstacles to be surmounted including the absence of legal deposit and a burglary of the hardware. It is planned to produce printed issues covering 1990-1992, 1993-1995 and current publication for 1996 onwards. After the annual schedule is in operation retrospective coverage from the 1980s will be undertaken

    Abstract
In France monograph collections are traditionally catalogues as serials, in accordance with the ISDS definition. Such collections are created by publishers in response to identified intellectual and cultural needs: there are no objective fixed criteria. Practice at the National Library of France is based on respecting the integrity of collection projects, and thereafter evaluating both their reality and precision. This work requires continual comparison of publishers' projects with their practices, albeit the information available is insufficient and fragmentary

    Abstract
This article describes three important bibliographic databases in Latin America, two of which have been created by national library networks. In the networks shared cataloging has become increasingly important. The databases contain much cataloging information not available outside Latin America. During the last two years the national libraries of Venezuela and Chile have exchanged their data and furnished it to a library in Colombia which is beginning the automation process. The article describes the formation of the networks from the point of view of database building, and examines prospects for increasing exchanges of data in the region.

    Abstract
The database of the Research Libraries Group's Research Libraries Information Network contains some 25 million records in all USMARC formats for bibliographic and authorities data, as well as a number of additional files for specialized data. These records include source data from the Library of Congress and other national bibliographic agencies, and records contributed by RLG member institutions, and are used both for technical processing and in support of RLG's cooperative programs. Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Cyrillic vernacular records are included in the central database; work on Hebrew is in progress. Future developments will result in the addition of diverse kinds of data, including nonbibliographic data, to RLIN.

    Abstract
The paper presents the new verbal indexing language (National Library of Poland Descriptors) used in Polish national bibliography. History and organization of Polish national bibliography as well as the context of other changes in the National Library of Poland are described. The paper provides information about National Library of Poland Descriptors main principles, and describes the steps that have been undertaken by subject specialists to improve the subject description of the national bibliography records, especially of its online version. The result of these changes is compared with recommendations for subject access in national bibliographies proposed by IFLA.

    Abstract
National bibliographies serve a variety of functions, but act essentially as archival records of the national imprint. However, coverage and currency are often constrained by inadequate legal deposit mechanisms, and it may be questioned whether the national bibliography needs to include all publications or whether the national bibliographic agency should act as a coordinator of current bibliographic data. Some have been driven to reduce the bibliographic content of their records as a result of declining income and increases in publishing output. Such measures have not met with universal approval, but appear to have resulted in improved currency. Technology continues to have an impact on the production of national bibliographies, with CD-ROMs, the UNIMARC format and, particularly, networking initiatives all facilitating greater availability of and access to bibliographic information. Networking may well render less relevant the local basis of national bibliographies, with possibilities for supranational coverage and the linking of document supply to bibliographic access

    Abstract
Effective resourcesharing presupposes an infrastructure which permits users to locate materials of interest in both print and electronic formats. 2 approaches for providing this are union catalogues and Z39.50 based distributed search systems and computer to computer information retrieval protocols. The advantages and limitations of each approach are considered, paying particular attention to a relaistic assessment of Z39.50 implementations. Argues that the union catalogue is far from obsolete and the 2 approaches should be considered complementary rather than competitive. Technologies to create links between the bibliographic apparatus of catalogues and abstracting and indexing databases and primary content in electronic form, such as the new Serial Item and Contribution Identifier (SICI) standard are also discussed as key elements in the infrastructure to support resource sharing
