    Abstract
The range of metadata needed to run a digital library and preserve its collections in the long term is much more extensive and complicated than anything in its traditional counterpart. It includes the same 'descriptive' information which guides users to the resources they require but must supplement this with comprehensive 'administrative' metadata: this encompasses technical details of the files that make up its collections, the documentation of complex intellectual property rights and the extensive set needed to support its preservation in the long-term. To accommodate all of this requires the use of multiple metadata standards, all of which have to be brought together into a single integrated whole.

    Abstract
Preservation of digital documents for the long term requires above all to solve the problem of technological obsolescence. Accessing to digital documents in 20 or loo years will be impossible if we, or our successor, can't process the bit stream underlying digital documents. We can be sure that the modality of data processing will be different in 20 or loo years. It is then our task to collect key information about today's data processing to ensure future access to these documents. In this paper we present the NEDLIB's proposal for a preservation metadata set. This set gathers core metadata that are mandatory for preservation management purposes. We propose to define 8 metadata elements and 38 sub-elements following the OAIS taxonomy of information object. A layered information analysis of the digital document is proposed in order to list all information involved in the data processing of the bit stream. These metadata elements are intended to be populate, as much as possible, in an automatic way to make it possible to handle large amounts of documents

    Abstract
Management of rights in electronic resources on the Internet is a complex issue. this can be considered almost universal knowledge, as paraphrases of this statement can be found in many discussions on this subject. This being the case, it is not surprising that a definition, operational solution to the problem has yet to be found. In one of the world's leading metadata initiatives, the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative, discussions on this topic over several years have failed to reach a conclusion. Some people think the issue is simply too complex to handle, others that the provision of simple shortcuts to more detailed information should be sufficient. It could be argued that a solution to the issue is in fact out of scope for the Dublin Core element set, in so far as it aims only to establish a core set of descriptive metadata for resource discovery

    Abstract
The main objective of the proposed high-level 'Visual Repository Definition Language' is to anbale advanced Web presentation of large amounts of exisitng heterogeneous information. Statements of the language serve to describe the desired structure of information repositories, which are composed of metadata entities encapsulating the original data. Such approach helps to to avoid the usual relocation and restructuring of data that occurs when providing Web access to it. The language has been designed to be useful even for inexperienced programmers. Its applicability is demonstrated by a real example, creating a repository of judicial opinions from publicly available raw data

    Abstract
This IFLA Rare Books and Special Collections Section presentation and discussion grew out of a panel discussion of the same title held at CIDOC's annual meeting in September, 2015. Ideas drawn from the panel discussion were presented to IFLA participants for further commentary. The author prefaces the open discussion with brief contextual information about how the library, archives, and museums sectors are addressing the challenge of metadata integration. Megan Phillips, U.S. National Archives and Records Administration, leads an open discussion, an edited transcript of which forms the main part of this article.

    Abstract
Information subject gateways provide targeted discovery services for their users, giving access to Web resources selected according to quality and subject coverage criteria. Information gateways recognise that they must collaborate on a wide range of issues relating to content to ensure continued success. This report is informed by discussion of content activities at the 1999 Imesh Workshop. The author considers the implications for subject based gateways of co-operation regarding coverage policy, creation of metadata, and provision of searching and browsing across services. Other possibilities for co-operation include working more closely with information providers, and diclosure of information in joint metadata registries

    Abstract
The current subject gateways have evolved over time when the discipline of Internet resource discovery was in its infancy. This is reflected by the lack of well-established, light-weight, deployable, easy-to-use, standards for metadata and information retrieval. We provide an introduction to the architecture, standards and software solutions in use by subject gateways, and to the issues that must be addressed to support future subject gateways

    Abstract
This article gives an overview of the design and organisation of DutchESS, a Dutch information subject gateway created as a national collaborative effort of the National Library and a number of academic libraries. The combined centralised and distributed model of DutchESS is discussed, as well as its selection policy, its metadata format, classification scheme and retrieval options. Also some options for future collaboration on an international level are explored

    Abstract
States that heterogeneous project groups today may be expected to use the mechanisms of the Web for sharing information. Metadata has been proposed as a mechanism for expressing the semantics of information and, hence, facilitate information retrieval, understanding and use. Presents an approach to sharing information which aims to use a semantic modeling language as the basis for expressing the semantics of information and designing metadata schemes. Functioning on the borderline between human and computer understandability, the modeling language would be able to express the semantics of published Web documents. Reporting on work in progress, presents the overall framework and ideas
