- Abstract
- The employees of an organization often use a personal hierarchical classification scheme to organize digital documents that are stored on their own workstations. As this may make it hard for other employees to retrieve these documents, there is a risk that the organization will lose track of needed documentation. Furthermore, the inherent boundaries of such a hierarchical structure require making arbitrary decisions about which specific criteria the classification will b.e based on (for instance, the administrative activity or the document type, although a document can have several attributes and require classification in several classes).A faceted classification model to support corporate information organization is proposed. Partially based on Ranganathan's facets theory, this model aims not only to standardize the organization of digital documents, but also to simplify the management of a document throughout its life cycle for both individuals and organizations, while ensuring compliance to regulatory and policy requirements.

- Abstract
- By the explosion of possibilities for a ubiquitous content production, the information overload problem reaches the level of complexity which cannot be managed by traditional modelling approaches anymore. Due to their pure syntactical nature traditional information retrieval approaches did not succeed in treating content itself (i.e. its meaning, and not its representation). This leads to a very low usefulness of the results of a retrieval process for a user's task at hand. In the last ten years ontologies have been emerged from an interesting conceptualisation paradigm to a very promising (semantic) modelling technology, especially in the context of the Semantic Web. From the information retrieval point of view, ontologies enable a machine-understandable form of content description, such that the retrieval process can be driven by the meaning of the content. However, the very ambiguous nature of the retrieval process in which a user, due to the unfamiliarity with the underlying repository and/or query syntax, just approximates his information need in a query, implies a necessity to include the user in the retrieval process more actively in order to close the gap between the meaning of the content and the meaning of a user's query (i.e. his information need). This thesis lays foundation for such an ontology-based interactive retrieval process, in which the retrieval system interacts with a user in order to conceptually interpret the meaning of his query, whereas the underlying domain ontology drives the conceptualisation process. In that way the retrieval process evolves from a query evaluation process into a highly interactive cooperation between a user and the retrieval system, in which the system tries to anticipate the user's information need and to deliver the relevant content proactively. Moreover, the notion of content relevance for a user's query evolves from a content dependent artefact to the multidimensional context-dependent structure, strongly influenced by the user's preferences. This cooperation process is realized as the so-called Librarian Agent Query Refinement Process. In order to clarify the impact of an ontology on the retrieval process (regarding its complexity and quality), a set of methods and tools for different levels of content and query formalisation is developed, ranging from pure ontology-based inferencing to keyword-based querying in which semantics automatically emerges from the results. Our evaluation studies have shown that the possibilities to conceptualize a user's information need in the right manner and to interpret the retrieval results accordingly are key issues for realizing much more meaningful information retrieval systems.

- Abstract
- Die Entstehung von Social Software ermöglicht es Nutzern, in großem Umfang im Netz zu publizieren. Bisher liegen aber nur wenige empirische Befunde zu funktionalen Eigenschaften sowie Qualitätsaspekten von Nutzerbeiträgen im Kontext von Informationsmanagement und Information Retrieval vor. Diese Arbeit diskutiert grundlegende Partizipationsformen, präsentiert empirische Studien über Social Tagging, Blogbeiträge sowie Relevanzbeurteilungen und entwickelt Design und Implementierung einer "sozialen" Informationsarchitektur für ein partizipatives Onlinehilfesystem.

- Das 11. Internationale Symposium für Informationswissenschaft (151) findet vom 1. bis 3. April 2009 an der Universität Konstanz statt. Die Tagung ist eine Gemeinschaftsveranstaltung des Hochschulverbandes für Informationswissenschaft (HI) und der IuK-Initiative Wissenschaft. Es will vielmehr eine Einführung in die Prinzipien, Strategien und Verfahren der Langzeitarchivierung sein, wie sie derzeit in Bibliotheken schon zum Einsatz kommen. Ross Harvey tut dies vor dem Hintergrund der Ergebnisse schon abgeschlossener und noch laufender Forschungen und praktischer Anwendungen in diesem Bereich. Dabei stützt er sich nicht nur auf Erfahrungen aus Bibliotheken, sondern auch auf Erfahrungen anderer Communities, für welche Langzeitarchivierung ein kritischer Punkt ist, wie zum Beispiel die Geowissenschaften. Der Autor beschreibt, dass die Archivierung digitalen Materials viele Herausforderungen birgt, für die vordigitale Modelle der Konservierung nur wenig Unterstützung bieten.
Er spricht ganz klar aus, dass es zu dieser Frage keine schnelle technologische Lösung geben wird. Die Erhaltung digitaler Archive über eine lange Zeit ist neben einer technischen vielmehr auch eine institutionelle Frage. Auch organisatorische und rechtliche Herausforderungen spielen in diesen Bereich hinein. "Preserving Digital Materials" widmet sich vier großen Fragen, die dem Buch auch seine Struktur geben: - Warum bewahren wir digitales Material auf? - Welches digitale Material bewahren wir auf? - Wie tun wir dies? - Wie managen wir die digitale Langzeitarchivierung? . . . Im gesamten Buch ist eine Fülle an Materialien und Studien eingearbeitet. Abgerundet wird dieser ausführliche, aber trotzdem übersichtliche Band durch ein Literaturverzeichnis, welches auch viele Online-Quellen enthält. - Abstract
- Ziel aller professioneller Aktivitäten der in der DGI organisierten Informationsfachleute ist es, bedarfsgerecht die Verfügbarkeit von Informationen sicher zu stellen. Als Motto der 60.Jahrestagung und 30. Online-Tagung der DGI bietet diese Zielsetzung den Rahmen für ein vielseitiges Programm, das Information Professionals aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln interessante Einblicke in informationswissenschaftliche Forschung, praktische Anwendungen, das Berufsfeld, die Ausbildungssituation und geplante Projekte bietet. Dabei begleiten uns die zentralen Fragen, unter welchen Bedingungen eine Information für wen heute verfügbar ist, wie sich die Verfügbarkeit auch bei sich wandelnden Technologien und Rezeptionsgewohnheiten für die Zukunft sichern lässt und die alte, doch immer wieder neue Frage nach der 'Dokumentationswürdigkeit' aufgrund von Qualität oder betrieblichen Notwendigkeiten und juristischen Regelungen. Der Band vereinigt die Textfassungen der Beiträge, die durch das Progammkomitee angenommen worden sind, dazu gehören u.a. die suche nach Bildern oder Patenten mit Suchmaschinen, Competitive Intelligence, Sicherung von Primärdaten, Langfristige Nutzbarkeit und Standardisierung, Qualitätskriterien, automatische und intellektuelle Erschließung, Ontologien oder Erfahrungen mit dem Einsatz von Wikis.

Der vorliegende Sammelband bietet einen aktuellen und umfassenden Überblick über die Aktivitäten bei der Vermittlung von Informationskompetenz in britischen Bibliotheken. Mit dem Titel wird die Erwartung erweckt, das Buch zeige Handlungsempfehlungen auf. Leider wird der praxisbezogene Ansatz nicht von allen Autoren gleichermaßen verfolgt, so dass einige Aufsätze eher zum spartenbezogenen Fortschrittsbericht geraten sind. Ein komplettes Kurs-Design wird in keinem der Kapitel geboten - dies ist aber auch nicht Anliegen des Buchs. Die Übertragbarkeit der Konzepte auf den deutschen Sprachraum ist begrenzt. Zu unterschiedlich sind die Rahmenbedingungen im Bibliothekswesen selbst, aber auch im Ausbildungssystem und den Förderprogrammen. Dennoch bietet das vorliegende Werk interessante Einblicke in die - gegenüber Österreich und Deutschland stark fortgeschrittene - Praxis der Vermittlung von Informationskompetenz im britischen Bibliothekswesen sowie einige nützliche Tipps und Hinweise für Gestaltung eigener Lernangebote. So ist The Information Literacy Cookbook für den deutschsprachigen Raum nur teilweise ein Kochbuch, i.S. einer Handlungsempfehlung für die Vermittlung von lnformationskompetenz, als vielmehr eine Studie über die britischen Essgewohnheiten. - Abstract
- Ein zentrales Internetportal für die Bibliotheks-, Buch- und Informationswissenschaften soll die bislang verstreute Fachinformation in diesen drei eng benachbarten Disziplinen bündeln und unter einer Suchoberfläche zusammenführen. Der Aufbau dieser »Virtuellen Fachbibliothek Bibliotheks-, Buch- und Informationswissenschaften« (ViFa BBI) erfolgt mit Unterstützung der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft. Der Nutzer findet hier in Zukunft alle Möglichkeiten eines »one-stop-shop« der Fachinformation vor: Mit einer einzigen Suchanfrage recherchiert er gleichzeitig in einer Vielzahl von Nachweisinstrumenten für gedruckte und elektronische Materialien, Internetressourcen und Fakteninformationen. Thematisches Browsing und Navigieren sind ebenso möglich wie die formale Suche nach Autoren oder Titelstichworten. Das Angebot richtet sich an Wissenschaftler, Studierende und bereits in der Praxis tätige Absolventen der Bibliotheks-, Buch- und Informationswissenschaften. Die Fachcommunity wird durch einen wissenschaftlichen Beirat an der Entwicklung des Portals beteiligt. Durch den facettenreichen und in vielfacher Hinsicht propädeutischen Charakter der hier zusammengefassten Fachgebiete, die unter anderem historische, betriebsund sozialwissenschaftliche sowie informationstechnologische Aspekte umfassen, ist die ViFa BBI auch interdisziplinär von Interesse. Deshalb ist auch jeder am Buch- Bibliotheks- und Informationswesen Interessierte aufgerufen, sich bei der Entwicklung zu beteiligen. Partner beim Aufbau des Portals sind der - Fachbereich Informationswissenschaften der FH Potsdam, das - Informationszentrum für Informationswissenschaft und -praxis der Fachhochschule Potsdam, das - Kompetenznetzwerk für Bibliotheken (KNB) beim Deutschen Bibliotheksverband, die - Buchwissenschaft der Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg und die - Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen, die als DFG-Sondersammelgebietsbibliothek für das Fach »Informations-, Buch- und Bibliothekswesen« die Entwicklung koordiniert.

- Abstract
- Die 7. Tagung der Deutschen Sektion der ISKO (Internationalen Gesellschaft für Wissensorganisation) thematisierte, anknüpfend an die gesellschaftliche Entwicklung, das Spannungsfeld zwischen wissenschaftlicher Wissensorganisation und der bisher eher vernachlässigten Organisation unterhaltsamer Information unter dem - mehr provozierenden - Titel: Wissensorganisation und Edutainment: Wissensgesellscbaft - Informationsdesign - Unterhaltungsindustrie. Dieses Thema löste eine heftige Diskussion über die Grundlagen der Wissensorganisation und die Herausforderungen der neuen nichtwissenschaftlichen Umgebungen und Technologien aus. Es wurde u.a. die Frage gestellt, ob bereits von einer "Wissensindustrie" gesprochen werden kann, die in ihrer Verschmelzung mit der Unterhaltungsindustrie im "Edutain ment" gipfelt. Besonders rücken dabei auch Aktivitäten im Bereich "virtuelle Lehre" in den Vordergrund, etwa im Zusammenhang mit Internet und entsprechenden Initiativen in Politik und Gesellschaft (Slogan "Schulen und Bevölkerung ans Netz!"). Stand das Internet im Laufe seiner Entstehung zunächst noch ganz im Dienst von innerwissenschaftlicher Kommunikation, so ruft die Kommerzialisierung des Netzes und die Sicherung der Copy rights dann die Unterhaltungsindustrie auf den Plan. Wissenschaft, Kommerz und Kunst scheinen durch zunehmende Medienverschmelzung (WWW, interaktives Fernsehen, das neue Medium DVD, virtuelle Realität) immer enger zu einer neuen zu organisierenden Kulturgestalt zusammenzuschmelzen. An die Wissensorganisation stellen sich damit vollkommen neue Herausforderungen. Neben der Fragestellung "Wissensindustrie" behandelte diese Tagung auch das weitere interdisziplinäre Feld der Wissensorganisation und zwar nicht nur mit dem erleichterten Zugang und Wiederfinden von Wissenseinheiten, sondern auch dem gemeinsamen Erarbeiten von Wissen, seiner Aufbereitung und zielgruppengerechten, ansprechenden Präsentation. Der vorliegende Tagungsband enthält 25 Beiträge dieser Tagung, oft in überarbeiteter, aktualisierter Form (was ein relativ spätes Erscheinen rechtfertigt).

Arms) provides a compelling and convincing argument in favor of open access. At the core of this work is Willinsky's "access principle." a commitment that "research carries with it a responsibility to extend circulation of such work as far as possible and ideally to all who are interested in it and all who might profit from it" (p.xii). One by one Willinsky tackles the obstacles. both real and perceived, to open access. succeeding in his goal to "inform and inspire a larger debate over the political and moral economy of knowledge" (p.xiv). The author does note the irony of publishing a hook while advocating for open access, but points out that he does so to reach a larger audience. Willinsky also points out that most of the chapters' earlier versions can be found in open-access journals and on his Web site (http://www.11ed.educubc.ca/faculty/willinsky.html). The Access Principle is organized topically into thirteen chapters covering a broad range of practical and theoretical issues. Taken together. these chapters provide the reader with an excellent introduction to the open-access debate as well as all the potential benefits and possible impacts of the open-access movement. The author also includes six appendices. with information on metadata and indexing. os er twenty pages of references, and an index. ... All of Willinsky's arguments arc convincing and heartfelt. It is apparent throughout the hook that the author deeply believes in the principles behind open access. and his passion and conviction come through in the work. making the hook a thought-provoking and very interesting read. While he offers numerous examples to illustrate his points throughout the work. he does not. however. offer solutions or state that he has all the answers. In that, he succeeds in his goal to craft a hook that "informs and inspires. - Abstract
- Seit Mai ist b2i, das zentrale Wissenschaftsportal für die Bibliotheks-, Buch- und Informationswissenschaften, online (www.b2i.de). Dies teilte die Fachhochschule Potsdam mit. Der Name »b2i« fasst die Anfangsbuchstaben der beteiligten drei Wissenschaftsdisziplinen (Bibliotheks-, Buch- und Informationswissenschaften) zusammen. Mit diesem Portal steht den drei Disziplinen zum ersten Mal ein umfassendes Angebot an Fachinformation mit bibliografischen Nachweisen und Zugang zu wissenschaftlichen Texten interdisziplinär zur Verfügung. Eine Reihe von Datenbanken wurde überhaupt erst im Zusammenhang mit dem Projekt erarbeitet beziehungsweise digitalisiert.

- "Das Fachportal wird von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) gefördert. Partner in diesem Kooperationsprojekt sind die Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen (SUB), der als zuständiger Sondersammelgebietsbibliothek auch die Koordination obliegt, das Informationszentrum für Informationswissenschaft und -praxis (IZ) der Fachhochschule Potsdam, der Fachbereich Informationswissenschaften der Fachhochschule Potsdam, das Kompetenznetzwerk für Bibliotheken (KNB) beim Deutschen Bibliotheksverband Berlin und die Buchwissenschaft der FriedrichAlexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. Nach dem Vorbild der virtuellen Fachbibliotheken bündelt b2i Fachinformation, Datenbanken und Bibliothekskataloge der Bibliotheks-, Buch- und Informationswissenschaften und macht sie über eine gemeinsame Oberfläche zugänglich. Eine integrierte Suchmaschine ermöglicht die gleichzeitige Recherche in einer Vielzahl von Nachweisinstrumenten für gedruckte und elektronische Materialien, qualitätskontrollierten Internetressourcen und Fakteninformationen. Zum Service gehören außerdem Bestellmöglichkeiten für Monografien-, Zeitschriften- und Aufsatzliteratur sowie für elektronische Materialien, die als Datei oder Druckausgabe angefordert werden können. Damit wird b2i für Interessierte aus Wissenschaft, Studium und Praxis zu einem interdisziplinären »one-stop-shop« der Fachinformation für die Informationswissenschaften.
Zum Angebot von b2i gehört auch Volltextrecherche. Bereits jetzt sind der Potsdamer Volltextserver INFODATA eDepot und der GOEDOCDokumentenserver der SUB Göttingen einbezogen. Thematisch erschlossene Nachweise auf Artikelebene bieten die informationswissenschaftliche Datenbank INFODATA und der spezifische Fachausschnitt »Informations-, Buch- und Bibliothekswesen« aus der Aufsatzdatenbank Online Contents (OLC-SSG). Für die Buch- und Bibliothekswissenschaft verbessert sich die Nachweissituation erheblich durch die Einbindung der nunmehr erstmals in elektronischer Form verfügbaren »Bibliographie zur Buch- und Bibliotheksgeschichte« (BBB) und des von Bernhard Fabian herausgegebenen »Handbuch der historischen Buchbestände«, das in Form eines interaktiven Wikis kostenfrei zugänglich gemacht wird. Der »b2i Guide« enthält eine Sammlung von intellektuell erschlossenen, fachrelevanten Internetquellen, in die auch die Fachausschnitte aus der Elektronischen Zeitschriftenbibliothek (EZB) und des DatenbankInformationssystems (DBIS) eingebunden sind. Beiträge zu aktuellen Fachthemen aus der Bibliotheksszene ergänzen das Bibliotheksportal des Kompetenznetzwerks für Bibliotheken. - Abstract
- This book features theoretical and practical perspectives from a range of disciplines on the challenges of using digital media in interpretation and representation of cultural heritage. In "Theorizing Digital Cultural Heritage", experts offer a critical and theoretical appraisal of the uses of digital media by cultural heritage institutions. Previous discussions of cultural heritage and digital technology have left the subject largely unmapped in terms of critical theory. The essays in this volume offer this long-missing perspective on the challenges of using digital media in the research, preservation, management, interpretation, and representation of cultural heritage. The contributors - scholars and practitioners from a range of relevant disciplines - ground theory in practice, considering how digital technology might be used to transform institutional cultures, methods, and relationships with audiences. The contributors examine the relationship between material and digital objects in collections of art and indigenous artefacts; the implications of digital technology for knowledge creation, documentation, and the concept of authority; and the possibilities for "virtual cultural heritage" - the preservation and interpretation of cultural and natural heritage through real-time, immersive, and interactive techniques. The essays in "Theorizing Digital Cultural Heritage" will serve as a resource for professionals, academics, and students in all fields of cultural heritage, including museums, libraries, galleries, archives, and archaeology, as well as those in education and information technology. - The major strength of Theorizing Digital Cultural Heritage: A Critical Discourse is the balance of theory and practice achieved by its authors through the inclusion of discussion on digital culture exhibits and programs. By describing the work being done at diverse cultural institutions life is given to theoretical discussions. By relating theory to practice, the work becomes accessible to a broader range of readers. Further, these essays provide many examples of how libraries and museums could partner with each other in the realm of digital culture. The field of museum studies is dealing with the same issues as information and library science with regards to data organization, user behavior, object classification, and documentation schemas. Also, the emphasis on the users of digital cultural heritage and how individuals make meaningful connections with art, history, and geography is another asset of the book. Each chapter is well researched resulting in helpful and extensive bibliographies on various aspects of digital culture. Overall, the work is rich in discussion, description and illustrative examples that cover the subject of digital cultural heritage in terms of depth and breadth. The primary weakness of the title is on the focus on museum studies in the discourse on digital cultural heritage. There is much to be shared and discovered across other cultural institutions such as libraries and local historical societies and a more interdisciplinary approach to the essays included would have captured this. The overwhelming emphasis on museums, unfortunately, may cause some researching and studying digital cultural heritage from another perspective to overlook this work; thereby further dividing the efforts and communication of knowledge in this area. This work is highly recommended for collections on museum studies, cultural heritage, art history and documentation, library and information science, and archival science. This work would be most useful to educators and researchers interested in a theoretical understanding of cultural institutions and user interactions in view of the social and political impact of the evolving digital state of cultural heritage rather than in the specific technologies and specific user studies on the digital cultural heritage. Theorizing Digital Cultural Heritage is an insightful work that will encourage further discourse and research."

- Abstract
- Bibliotheks- und Informationskompetenz können Studierende im Rahmen von Einführungs- und Schulungsangeboten der Hochschulbibliothek erlangen, jedoch gibt es daneben auch andere Hilfsmittel, die eventuell noch mehr Einfluss haben als die von kundigen Bibliothekar(inn)en durchgeführten Kurse. Infrage kommen dafür vor allem einschlägige Lehrbücher zur Einführung in das wissenschaftliche Arbeiten beziehungsweise zur Anfertigung von Haus- und Examensarbeiten, denn diese beinhalten mehr oder minder ausführliche Abschnitte über Bibliotheken, die Bibliotheksbenutzung und die Literaturrecherche. Ihre Bedeutung für das Studium, die Examensvorbereitung und auch die Promotion ist kaum zu überschätzen, weil sie in der Regel von Hochschuldozenten, teilweise von Professoren, verfasst sind und deshalb in der Lehre gern verwendet und empfohlen werden.

April 1800 unterzeichneten Gesetz hieß. Während der letzten zwei Jahrhunderte wuchs die Parlamentsbibliothek zu einem der größten Wissensarsenale heran, dessen Bedeutung weit über Nordamerika hinausreicht. Sie verfügt heute über einen Bestand von annähernd 119 Millionen Büchern, Karten, Handschriften, Kunstwerken, Fotografien, Film- und Tonaufnahmen in rund 460 Sprachen. Den ansonsten streng chronologischen Aufbau der Darstellung lockert der Verfasser mit vielen Illustrationen und kleineren Essays über zentrale Persönlichkeiten der Zeit, großzügige Förderer und Mäzene, besondere Sammlungen sowie einzigartige Erwerbungen und größere Ereignisse auf, die der Entwicklung der Washingtoner Bibliothek ihren Stempel aufdrückten. Dabei spürt er den Erfahrungen und Beiträgen der einzelnen Bibliothekare nach, deren Leben und Leistung er bisweilen detailliert nachzeichnet. Gleichwohl beschränkt Conaway seinen Blick nicht allein auf die Verhältnisse innerhalb der Bibliotheksmauern; er bettet seine Geschichte der Library of Congress in einen breiten Zusammenhang mit der WeIt um sie herum ein und vermittelt so anschaulich,wie die einzelnen Sammlungen in der Zoo-jährigen Geschichte der Parlamentsbibliothek das politische und geistige Leben der USA widerspiegeln.
Jeder der Bibliotheksdirektoren sah sich mit einer besonderen Herausforderung während seiner Amtszeit konfron tiert: So wurde die gesamte Bibliothek durch den Brand des Kapitols während des britischen Angriffs auf Washington im August 1814 ein Raub der Flammen und mit Thomas Jeffersons Privatbibliothek ein Jahr später wieder errichtet. In den 40er Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts musste ein immenser Rückstand von eineinhalb Millionen Bänden katalogisiert werden. Die gigantische Aufgabe,den Kartenkatalog in einen EDV-Katalog umzuwandeln, war in den 80er Jahren zu bewältigen; und die 90er Jahre standen im Zeichen des National Digital Library Program. Gleichwohl prägten auch einzigartige Erwerbungen die Amtszeiten der 13 Bibliotheksdirektoren: Anschaulich erzählt Conaway unter anderem vom Spazierstock Walt Whitmans, dem Nachlass der Gebrüder Wright, den Fotografien aus der Zeit des Bürgerkrieges von Mathew B. Brady, den fünf Stradivariinstrumenten Gertrude Clarke Whitalls oder der Sammlung Leonard Bernsteins. Wer eine wissenschaftlich fundierte, gar kritische Geschichte der Library of Congress erwartet, wird diesen in der Tradition der nordamerikanischen coffee-table books stehenden Band eher enttäuscht zur Seite legen. Der Autor stellt die Einzig- und Großartigkeit der US-Parlamentsbibliothek in den Mittelpunkt seiner Darstellung, deren bisweilen recht ehrfürchtiger Erzählton insofern nicht Wunder nehmen darf, als sie in enger Kooperation mit dem Gegenstand des Buches entstand, der Bibliothek und ihren Bibliothekaren. Sein mit einer kleinen, überschaubaren Auswahlbibliografie endendes Werk richtet sich vor allem an ein interessiertes Laienpublikum, dem die zentrale Bedeutung der de facto zur Nationalbibliothek gewordenen Kongressbibliothek als Schatzkammer nordamerikanischer Kultur und Tradition nahe gebracht werden soll. Die große Resonanz, die Conaways Bildund Textband im Feuilleton einer beachtlichen Anzahl nordamerikanischer Zeitungen und Magazine erzielte, dürfte den Autor in seinem Anliegen mehr als bestätigt haben; und seine Lektüre ist auch für ein außeramerikanisches Fachpublikum, selbst wenn es mit der Geschichte der Library of Congress schon vertraut ist, ebenso unterhaltsam wie informativ."

- Abstract
- In dieser Untersuchung werden die Aufsätze der Jahre 2004 bis 2006 aus den acht wichtigsten deutschsprachigen Zeitschriften des Bibliotheks- und Informationswesens auf ihre Verfügbarkeit in Google Scholar hin untersucht. Dabei zeigt sich, dass Google Scholar keinen vollständigen Nachweis der Artikel bieten kann und sich daher nicht als Ersatz für bibliographische Datenbanken eignet. Google Scholar macht einen Teil der Volltexte direkt verfügbar und eignet sich insofern für einen schnellen und problemlosen Zugang zum Volltext, der traditionelle Wege wie die Bibliothek bzw. die Fernleihe umgeht. Für das Fach Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft bietet Google Scholar insgesamt die Chance, seine Inhalte auch über die Fachgrenzen hinaus bekannt zu machen.
