    Abstract

    Abstract

    Abstract
This paper examines the need for increased subject catalog access to imaginative literature, focusing on the environment of the academic/research library. New trends in scholarship have created more need for such subject access. We can develop a basis for subject access to imaginative literature by examining the historical treatment of imaginative literature and by drawing upon the past and present work of librarians, other information professionals such as indexers, and literary scholars. While many information professionals have recognized a need for increased subject access to individual works of imagination, there has been no clear consensus on how to do this. This paper represents a step forward in that direction, showing how we might use LCSH to express the themes or topics of an imaginative work. It is important that such subject access be multi-dimensional, identifying both concrete and abstract levels of meaning. Using The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne as an example, it is demonstrated how LC-type subject headings using LC subject terms with genre/form subdivisions can be developed.

    Abstract
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to explore the information needs of one user group, public library fiction readers, in order to reveal a design of an online community at the local level. Examination of user-generated metadata can reveal new approaches to information architecture. Design/methodology/approach - A literature review into behaviors of virtual communities; surveying public library readers regarding search behavior characteristics - the survey included a sample "tagging" exercise to determine whether public library communities could create meaningful metadata for retrieval purposes. Findings - The use of relevance as an indicator of tag quality is flawed: in a survey, public library readers "tagged" the novel The Da Vinci Code. The resulting collection of tags provided a richer description of the book than did the social book-related web site www.librarything.com. Tag collections can be broken down into different categories, each reflecting a different "facet" of the novel: character, plot, subject/topic, setting, and genre. Faceted structure to tags enables users to choose the context of the tag to the novel. Research limitations/implications - This research is relevant in the world of social networking sites, online communities, or any other such system where users generate descriptive metadata. Examination of such metadata can reveal facets, which can guide the architect/librarian in the design of a versatile architecture. Originality/value - This research resulted in a manifold design for a public-library-based online community that allowed for the full expression of users' information needs. This research introduces a faceted structure to current approaches for user-generated metadata, adding versatility to search terms.

    Abstract

    Abstract
Rare book cataloguers have on various occasions expressed frustration that their carefully constructed rare book records 'disappear' into 'vanilla' catalogues designed and maintained by system vendors or by local system staff with only the most general knowledge of cataloguing. Reports the results of a 1993 survey of online systems used for rare book cataloguing and takes a first step toward making a set of recommendations regarding the display and indexing of rare book records in such systems

    Abstract
For the purposes of library and information science research, transaction lof analysis can be narrowly defined as the study of electronically recorded interactions between online information retrieval systems and the persons who search for the information found in those systems. Researchers most often use transaction log data with the intention of improving an information retrieval system, human utilization of the system, and human (and perhaps also system) understanding of how the system is used by information seekers. Transaction log analysis can provide system designers and managers with valuable information about how the system is being employed by actual users. It also can be used to study prototype systems or potential system improvements

    Abstract
In Northern Germany, the State of Lower Saxony has developed an online library network, the center of which is the Library Computer Center at the State and University Library in Goettingen. This center offers the following data bases online: the union catalogue of serials in Lower Saxony libraries; the union catalogue of books since 1977 in these libraries; the IBZ and IBR; the last two years of the Deutsche Bibliographie, the British National Bibliography and, within the next few months, the titles offered by the Library of Congress (all in full service); then all new titles in this data base will be compatible to MARC II.

    Abstract
The article is a researcher's eye view of the value of the library catalog not only as a database to be searched for surrogates of objects of study, but as a corpus of text that can be analyzed in its own right, or incorporated within the researcher's own research database. Barriers are identified in the ways in which catalog data can be output and the technical skills researchers currently need to download, ingest, and manipulate data. Research tools and datasets created by, or in collaboration with, the library community are identified.
