    Abstract
    Classification is the basis of knowledge organization. Ontology, a comparatively new concept used as a tool for knowledge organization, establishes connections between terms and concepts enhancing the scope and usefulness of library classification. Ranganathan had invented the strong theory of the analytico-synthetic method in classification and devised Colon Classification. In this study a domain ontology on library and information science has been developed by implementing Raganathan's faceted approach of classification. The hierarchical relationships among terms have been established primarily keeping conformity with that of Ranganathan's Colon Classification (7th edition). But to accommodate new vocabularies, DDC 23rd edition and UDC Standard edition are consulted. The Protégé ontology editor has been used. The study carefully examines the steps in which the analytico-synthetic method have been followed. Ranganathan's Canon of Characteristics and its relevant Canons have been followed for defining the class-subclass hierarchy. It concludes by identifying the drawbacks as well as the merits faced while developing the ontology. This paper proves the relevance and importance of Ranganathan's philosophy in developing ontology based knowledge organization.

    Abstract
    Ein jeder Mensch ist mit seinem Dasein eingebettet in kosmische Gesetzmäßigkeiten und findet sich individualisiert und begrenzt durch die Bedingungen von Raum und Zeit; seine jeweilige "Mitgift" in vorgefundener Umgebung verlangt nach menschlicher Sinn Erfüllung. Diese ontischen Gegebenheiten können als Strukturvorgabe angesehen werden, die sich durch die kategorialen und logischen Strukturen menschlichen Denkens und Sprechens - z.B. in artikulierten Sätzen menschlichen Wissens - ergänzen lässt. Dabei bilden sich Wissensmuster, die sich in einem ontologisch fundierten Gesamtschema aller Wissensgebiete zur Darstellung bringen lassen können. Der Vortrag erläutert die hier angedeuteten kategorialen und systemtheoretischen Grundlagen mit Bezug auf die Konstruktion eines neuen, universalen Ordnungssystems aller Wissensgebiete, das vor 30 Jahren konzipiert wurde und sich bereits in vielfacher Hinsicht bewährt hat. Seine Rasterdarstellung ermöglicht eine übersichtliche, fokussierbare und unkomplizierte Handhabung in elektronischen Medien.

    Abstract
    Als 'klassifikatorische Ganzheiten' gelten hier Wissensgebiete, bzw. ihre Begriffe. Die Muster, die sich aufgrund der Begriffsrelationen von Wissensgebieten gewinnen lassen, werden sowohl durch formkategoriale als auch durch seinskategoriale Bezüge dieser Begriffe geprägt. Logische und linguistische Untersuchungen haben gezeigt, daß sich Wissensbereiche und Wissensgebiete formkategorial jeweils zu Triaden zusammenordnen lassen und als solche entsprechende Wissensmuster bilden. Ein universales System von 3**3 Triaden von Wissensgebieten wird vorgestellt und erläutert. Es wird dabei gezeigt, wie sich auch in der Interaktion von Wissensgebieten miteinander, z.B. in der Verwendung der Methoden und Verfahren eines Gebietes in einem anderen Gebiet oder der Fundierung eines Gebiets durch ein anderes gewisse Muster abzeichnen, die die Systemstellen eines solchen Systems apriori und auch aposteriori "systematisch" besetzen, ohne die innere Ordnung des Systems und seiner Triaden zu beeinträchtigen. Auf diese Weisen wird durch den Aspekt des internalen Bezugs von Wissensmustern (gegenüber dem o.g. elementalen und totalen) ein Musterwissen gewonnen, das insbesondere auch bei der Benutzung eines solchen Systems von großem Nutzen sein kann, da es das Gedächtnis stützt, die Mustererkennung ermöglicht und dementsprechend die Handhabung bei Einspeicherung und Retrieval von zu ordenbarem Wissen erleichtert.

    Abstract
    The paper presents a case for the revival of Colon Classification (CC). It traces the status of CC in brief and discusses its features. The author brings to light attempts made at providing a base for continuous improvements in the scheme and bringing it back to life. Measures for the revival of CC are suggested.

    S R Ranganathan and Melvil Dewey devised two types of classification schemes viz., faceted and enumerative. Ranganathan's faceted classification scheme is based on postulates, principles and canons. It has a strong theory. While working with the two schemes, similarities are observed.     Abstract
    A modest attempt is made in this paper to show how Ranganathan's Principles for Helpful Sequence are relevant in technical writings as writers need to organise the knowledge in a helpful sequence. Instead of relying on intuition, a deliberate understanding of the Principles for Helpful Sequence as recognised by Ranganathan would be more useful in bringing out effective products. The paper first outlines the eight Principles for Helpful Sequence and then goes on to explore the relevance of each of these eight principles to a wide range of technical documents. The paper concludes that an understanding of these principles is part of the core competencies of technical writers even in the web environment.

    Abstract
    Colon Classification (CC), based on dynamic theory of classification saw seven editions from 1928 to 1987. Libraries practising it continued with extensions and additions carried out to meet their needs since it was not revised for long after the 7th edition. Revision requires adding terms in different disciplines, organising them in relation to each other and assigning notation for shelf classification. Use of ICT would help in reviving CC and is essential for regular revision of a classification scheme. The paper explores the possibility for creation of an expert system through the design of Web based Colon Classification. The author explores the possibility by designing a prototype for online revision of Colon Classification in the paper.

    Abstract
    Computers have transformed from single isolated devices to entry points into a worldwide network of information exchange. Consequently, support in the exchange of data, information, and knowledge is becoming the key issue in computer technology today. The increasing volume of data available on the Web makes information retrieval a tedious and difficult task. Researchers are now exploring the possibility of creating a semantic web, in which meaning is made explicit, allowing machines to process and integrate web resources intelligently. The vision of the semantic web introduces the next generation of the Web by establishing a layer of machine-understandable data. The success of the semantic web depends on the easy creation, integration and use of semantic data, which will depend on web ontology. The faceted approach towards analyzing and representing knowledge given by S R Ranganathan would be useful in this regard. Ontology development in different fields is one such area where this approach given by Ranganathan could be applied. This paper presents a case of developing ontology for the field of banking.

    Abstract
    This paper reviews Ranganathan's description of subject from mathematical angle. Ranganathan was highly influenced by Nineteenth Century mathematician George Cantor and he used the concept of infinity in developing an axiomatic interpretation of subject. Majority of library scientists interpreted the concept of subject merely as a term or descriptor or heading to include the same in cataloguing and subject indexing. Some library scientists interpreted subject on the basis of document, i.e. from the angle of the concept of aboutness or epistemological potential of the document etc. Some people explained subject from the viewpoint of social, cultural or socio-cultural process. Attempts were made to describe subject from epistemological viewpoint. But S R Ranganathan was the first to develop an axiomatic concept of subject on its own. He built up an independent idea of subject that is ubiquitously pervasive with human cognition process. To develop the basic foundation of subject, he used the mathematical concepts of infinity and infinitesimal and construed the set of subjects or universe of subjects as continuous infinite universe. The subject may also exist in extremely micro-form, which was termed as spot subject and analogized with point, which is dimensionless having only an existence. The influence of Twentieth Century physicist George Gamow on Ranganathan's thought has also been discussed.

    Abstract
    Faceted analytical theory is a widely accepted approach for constructing modern classification schemes and other controlled vocabularies. While the advantages of faceted approach are broadly accepted and understood the actual implementation is coupled with many challenges when it comes to data modelling, management and retrieval. UDC Seminar 2017 revisits faceted analytical theory as one of the most influential methodologies in the development of knowledge organization systems.
