Abstract: In recent years, linguistics has developed a way of looking at language which may offer some insights to the indexer. Three main stages of inquiry are identified: observational, intuitional and evaluative. It is suggested that evaluative discussion of indexes is dependent on prior research at the observational and intuitional stages
