    Abstract
Describes research in the progress at Syracuse Univ.'s School of Information Studies that is invesitigating the role of public libraries in developing and exploiting the next generation of national networks as presently embodied in the Internet/NREN. The study will determine present knowledge and use of the Internet by public library leaders; identify barriers to Internet use; explore evolving roles for public libraries in the rapidly developing networked environment; and recommended specific strategies and policies for public libraries to pursue to take better advantage of Internet/NREN information resources and services

    Abstract
The issue of how public libraries will evolve in the Internet/NREN environment remain unanswered. Will the public library survive in this new age? Presents findings from a study that describes and assesses the key issues affecting the role of public libraries in the evolving national electronic networked environment. Recommends roles and strategies for the public library if it is to flourish in the networked environment

    Abstract
Reports results of a questionnaire survey of 1996 Internet and WWW activity in UK public libraries, undertaken by the UK Office for Library and Information Networking (UKOLN) on behalt of the Library and Information Commission, and compares the results with a similar survey of public libraries in the USA. The range of issues investigated include: number of libraries connected to the Internet; how the libraries are connected; availability of public access. Concludes that the UK id generally far behind the USA in the development of Internet services and levels of connectivity. The 1996 results for the UK are similar to those obtained in the 1994 USA survey. There is a high reliance on dial up as a connection methos, limited amounts of public access and general low connectivity. However, a noticeable amount of enthudiasm about the Internet was observed in the respondents and a great deal of planning was taking place. In addition, the higher level of public libraries Internet involvement in the USA did not always indicate that high levels of Internet services are being offered to the public. Lists recommended levels of Internet services that should be considered

    Abstract
In upholding the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA), the U.S. Supreme Court has forced public libraries to face difficult issues about filtering Internet content. The implementation of filters creates a range of practical issues for libraries and also raises myriad research issues related to the effects of CIPA on public library services and on access to Internet-based information in public libraries. Using a multimethod, iterative research strategy, this article explores selected areas related to filtering that may affect the provision of Internet content and services in public libraries. This study presents preliminary data about the impact of CIPA on public libraries and offers a perspective of what research is necessary to provide a better understanding of the impacts of CIPA and to determine what research would need to be conducted for potential future legal challenges to the application of CIPA in public libraries.

    Abstract
Academic libraries have been on the leading edge in the provision of services, navigation aids, and user training for the Internet and the emerging National Research and Education Network (NREN). Yet empirical research and synthesis of librarians' experience with electronic networking is scarce. Reports selected findings from a recently completed study that examined the impact of the national networked environment on academic libraries. Its goals was to investigate the roles of academic libraries and librarians in the national networking context. Summarizes the study activities and key issues and findings from data analysis

    Abstract
This paper is a summary of a final report that assessed the impact of providing Internet connectivity to rural public libraries. The purpose of the evaluation was to determine impacts on the librarians, libraries, local communities, and the larger Internet community as a results of Internet connectivity. The results of this study indicate that a number of important impacts and benefits resulted from the Internet connections, that such an approach is technological feasible, and that the librarians in the study were able to master the skills and competencies required. The paper describes critical success factors for public libraries connecting rural public libraries to the Internet
