    Abstract
    Digitale Revolution: Chance oder Gefahr für die Demokratie? Einst galten das Internet und die sozialen Medien als Chance auf unbegrenzten Zugang zu Wissen - und damit als Basis für eine neue Hochphase der demokratischen Debattenkultur. Doch stattdessen sind wir heute mit Hass im Netz, Fake-News und Verschwörungstheorien konfrontiert. Rechte Parteien und Organisationen wie die AfD, Pegida und die Identitäre Bewegung können fast ungehindert ihre Ideologien verbreiten. Doch dabei handelt es sich nicht um eine reine »Online-Radikalisierung«. Das beweist die Welle rechtsmotivierter Gewalt wie die Anschläge von Halle und Hanau und eine wachsende Akzeptanz rechter Positionen in der Bevölkerung.     Die sozialen Medien haben sich zu einem Raum des Hasses und der Unwahrheit entwickelt. Ohne diese digitalen Brandbeschleuniger sind die rechtsextremen Wahlerfolge ebenso wenig zu verstehen wie die jüngste Welle rechter Gewalt. Maik Fielitz und Holger Marcks gehen dieser Entwicklung und ihren Ursachen auf den Grund. Sie zeigen, mit welchen manipulativen Techniken rechtsextreme Akteure in den sozialen Medien versuchen, Ängste zu verstärken, Verwirrung zu stiften und Mehrheitsverhältnisse zu verzerren. Dass ihr Wirken dabei eine solche Dynamik entfalten kann, hat wiederum mit der Funktionsweise der sozialen Medien selbst zu tun. Denn sie begünstigen die Entstehung und Verbreitung von Bedrohungsmythen, die der führungslosen Masse der Wutbürger eine Richtung geben. Wie aber ließe sich dieser "digitale Faschismus" bändigen, ohne die Werte der offenen Gesellschaft in Mitleidenschaft zu ziehen? "Das Ergebnis ihrer Recherche ist so besorgniserregend, dass die Forscher die Rechten als "die neuen Gatekeeper" bezeichnen. So kursierten etwa in den Wochen nach der Kölner Silvesternacht fünf Mal mehr muslimfeindliche Posts als üblich. Gravierender noch: Rechte Sprache und Sprachbilder seien inzwischen Bestandteil des öffentlichen Diskurses.     Abstract
    Es lässt sich erklären, warum ausgerechnet Frances Haugen die Whistleblowerin des Jahres, und stellt man ihre Leistung in Rechnung, die Frau des Jahres 2022/2021 wurde (zumindest für Open Password). Besteht ihre Leistung doch darin, die Schäden umfassend offenzulegen, die Facebook der Funktionsfähigkeit der Demokratie in westlichen Ländern zugefügt hat. Diese Gefährdungen der Demokratie durch die Außerkraftsetzung des Wahrheitsbegriffes auf den Plattformen der sozialen Medien und ihre dortige Förderung von Hass und Hetze dürften in den letzten Jahren schwerer gewogen haben als die Bedrohungen der demokratischen Staatsform durch Putin, Xi Jinping und weitere autokratische Herrscher. Allerdings haben es die westlichen Demokratien anders als in geopolitischen Zusammenhängen selbst in der Hand, die Sozialen Medien durch eine striktere Regulierung und Gesetzgebung sozial- und gemeinverträglich zu gestalten. Die größere und schwieriger zu beantwortende Frage ist die, warum kein anderer der 58.000 Angestellten von Facebook Ähnliches wie Frances Haugen zu leisten imstande war. Dabei gab es bei Facebook durchaus andere Whistleblower und formierte sich vorübergehend mindestens eine Gruppe, die Widerstand gegen eine als illegitim empfundene Unternehmenspolitik leistete. Nur setzten sich diese vereinzelten Initiativen nicht wie Frances Haugen in der Öffentlichkeit durch. Während Haugens Kampagne lief, wurden unabhängig von ihr weitere Studien über die negativen Folgen der Facebook-Nutzung bekannt, so die Gefährdung der geistigen Gesundheit weiblicher Teenager.

    Social media connected the world--and gave rise to fake news and increasing polarization. Now a leading researcher at MIT draws on 20 years of research to show how these trends threaten our political, economic, and emotional health in this eye-opening exploration of the dark side of technological progress.     Abstract
    Gibt es eine Alternative zu Google? Sollte es sie geben? Die vorherrschende Kritik an den HighTech-Konzernen setzt an ihrer Marktmacht und deren Missbrauch an. Diesen ist politisch mit "Regulierung", "Sanktionierung" und "Sicherstellung von mehr Wettbewerb" zu begegnen. Evgeny Morozov, der aus Weißrussland stammende Technologie- und Internet-Kritiker, wurde mit den Büchern "The Net Delusion" (2011) und "To Save Everything Click Here" (2013), speziell in Deutschland als FAZ-Kolumnist bekannt. Mit seiner Kritik an den Tech-Konzernen setzt er grundsätzlicher als die in der öffentlichen Debatte dominierenden wirtschaftlichen Zusammenhänge an: Er fragt nach der Qualität, Relevanz und Originalität der suchbar und verfügbar gemachten Inhalte. Folgen wir ihm, so würde mehr Wettbewerb unter Suchmaschinen wenig nützen, wenn sich die neuen Player in den Kriterien, auf die ihre Algorithmen festgelegt sind, nicht von Google unterscheiden (und die aus technischer Sicht womöglich schlechter als Google sind).
    Morozov hat zudem eine Alternative zu Google geschaffen. Zumindest wird sein Dienst so in Teilen der Öffentlichkeit und im persönlichen Umfeld von Morozov wahrgenommen. Das Angebot trägt den Namen "The Syllabus" (auf Deutsch: "Das Register" oder "Das Verzeichnis"). www.the-syllabus.com. Das ist nach Sara Getz als Frontstellung gegen die "Attention Economy" zu verstehen, in der die Anbieter um die knappe Aufmerksamkeit ihrer Nutzer ringen. Wie erfolgreich sie dabei sind, wird nach Auflagenhöhen, Einschaltquoten, Klicks und "Likes" gemessen. Diese stellen einen Anreiz dar, kürzer, schriller, boulevardesker und oberflächlicher zu schreiben. Im Folgenden werden Beschreibungen und Bewertungen von "The Syllabus" seitens Sara Getz und Niklas Meek wiedergegeben. Hinzu kommen die Selbstbeschreibungen von Syllabus auf der eigenen Webseite und meine persönliche Bilanz, nachdem ich "The Syllabus" ein knappes Jahr genutzt habe.

    Abstract
    In der letzten Ausgabe des Jahres wählte Open Password als Trend des Jahres - was hätte es anderes sein können? - "Corona" - und als Personen des Jahres "Wir alle", da wir fast ausnahmslos in ähnlicher Weise unter der Pandemie litten und nach Lösungen für unser berufliches und privates Leben unter eingeschränkten Möglichkeiten suchten (18. Dezember). Am 8. Januar wählten wir als Unternehmen des Jahres Zoom, das mit seiner Videokonferenzplattform und weiteren Kollaborationstools besser und vor allem einfacher als seine Konkurrenten die durch Corona ins Home Office verbannten Manager virtuell zusammenführte. Als Meredith Whittaker Anfang September zur neuen Präsidentin der Signal Foundation berufen wurde, horchte die Tech-Branche auf. Denn die ehemalige Google-Managerin gilt als einer ihrer schärfsten Kritiker:innen. In den vergangenen Jahren hat Whittaker vor allem gegen Überwachung und Rüstungsdeals gekämpft - erst bei Google, wo sie seit 2006 dreizehn Jahre lange arbeitete, später an dem von ihr mitgegründeten Forschungsinstitut zu den Auswirkungen Künstlicher Intelligenz. Berühmt wurde sie 2018 als Organisatorin der Mitarbeiter:innenproteste, die sich daran entzündeten, wie die Google-Führung mit Fällen sexualisierter Gewalt in dem Konzern umging. Nachdem Whittaker 2019 bei Google "gegangen wurde", wie sie sagt, lehrte sie als Professorin an der New York University und beriet die US-amerikanische Federal Trade Commission. Anfang dieses Jahres hatte Signal-Gründer Moxie Marlinspike überraschend seinen Rückzug bekanntgegeben. Daraufhin wurde der Posten der Stiftungspräsidentin eingerichtet. In dieser Funktion verantwortet Whittaker nun die Gesamtstrategie der gemeinnützigen Stiftung und kümmert sich dabei vor allem um eine stabile Finanzierung des Messengers.     Abstract
    Browsererweiterungen zum Schutz vor Tracking stellen beliebte Werkzeuge zum Schutz der Privatsphäre von Nutzerinnen und Nutzern dar. Ihre tatsächliche Effektivität ist in hohem Maße von ihrer Usability abhängig, da diese bestimmt, in welchem Ausmaß diese Werkzeuge effektiv, effizient und zufriedenstellend genutzt werden können. Die vorliegende Untersuchung prüft die Gebrauchstauglichkeit vier solcher Browsererweiterungen mit Hilfe von Benutzertests. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Add-ons auch heutzutage noch eine Vielzahl an Usability-Mängeln aufweisen. Kernprobleme stellen insbesondere die mangelnde Verständlichkeit und die fehlende Führung und Unterstützung der Nutzenden dar.

    Abstract
    Twitter is utilized by many, including professional businesses and organizations; however, there are very few studies on how other entities interact with these organizations in the Twittersphere. This article presents a study that investigates tweets related to 5 major library and information science (LIS) professional organizations in the United States. This study applies a systematic tweets analysis framework, including descriptive analytics, network analytics, and co-word analysis of hashtags. The findings shed light on user engagement with LIS professional organizations and the trending discussion topics on Twitter, which is valuable for enabling more successful social media use and greater influence.

    Abstract
    Due to their confidence and dominance, narcissistic leaders oftentimes can be perceived favorably by followers, in particular during times of uncertainty. In this study, we propose and examine the relationship between narcissistic leaders and followers who are prone to experience uncertainty intensely and frequently in general, namely highly anxious followers. We do so by applying machine learning algorithms to account for personality traits in a large sample of leaders and followers on Twitter. We find that highly anxious followers are more likely to interact with narcissistic leaders in general, and male narcissistic leaders in particular. Finally, we also examined these interactions in the context of highly popular leaders and found that as leaders become more popular, they begin to attract less anxious followers, regardless of leader gender. We interpret and discuss these findings in relation to previous work and outline limitations and future research recommendations based on our approach.

    Abstract
    Digital exclusion is high on the international agenda and covers a variety of inequalities in access to and use of digital technologies, and in the skills and motivation needed for their adoption. This research contributes to the discussion on solving digital exclusion issues by addressing the emergent roles and challenges of Lithuanian public libraries in reducing the digital divide. The article combines a multilevel model of the digital divide with the concept of business idea and analyzes the future scenarios of Lithuanian public libraries. The findings highlight the public libraries' importance in conducting training, consultancy, and experiential learning to stimulate digital inclusion. Potentially, libraries can motivate users to adopt digital technologies, but this role is still not sufficiently visible. The findings show that libraries face challenges of redefining their social value and obtaining the sustaining funds, skills, and infrastructure necessary for digital inclusion programs. However, they can use collaboration networks, effective cost management, and external expertise to overcome these obstacles.

    Abstract
    The spread of misinformation on social media has become a major societal issue during recent years. In this work, we used the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic as a case study to systematically investigate factors associated with the spread of multi-topic misinformation related to one event on social media based on the heuristic-systematic model. Among factors related to systematic processing of information, we discovered that the topics of a misinformation story matter, with conspiracy theories being the most likely to be retweeted. As for factors related to heuristic processing of information, such as when citizens look up to their leaders during such a crisis, our results demonstrated that behaviors of a political leader, former US President Donald J. Trump, may have nudged people's sharing of COVID-19 misinformation. Outcomes of this study help social media platform and users better understand and prevent the spread of misinformation on social media.

    Abstract
    Purpose This study aims to develop an in-depth understanding of the underlying dynamics of an emergent shared information practice within a Facebook group, and the resources the group develops to sustain this practice. Design/methodology/approach In-depth semi-structured interviews were carried out with twenty members from the group. The findings are based on comparative analysis combined with narrative analysis and were interpreted using theories of situated learning and Community of Practice. Findings The study shows that although members of this multicultural mothers group endorsed different, sometimes opposing parenting practices, the group had to find common ground when sharing information. Managing these challenges was key to maintaining the group as an open information resource for all members. The group produced a shared repertoire of resources to maintain its activities, including norms, rules, shared understandings, and various monitoring activities. The shared online practice developed by the community is conceptualised in this article as an information practice requiring shared, community-specific understandings of what, when, and how information can or should be sought or shared in ways that are valued in this specific community. The findings show that this shared information practice is not static but continually evolves as members negotiate what is, or not, important for the group. Originality/value The research provides novel insights into the underlying dynamics of the emergence, management, and sustainability of a shared information practice within a contemporary mothers group on Facebook.
