- Abstract
- Jeder Mensch kommuniziert. Das macht ihn zum homo sapiens mit Verstand und Sinn, zugleich bereitet ihm Kommunikation viele Probleme. Als Massenkommunikation über Medien ist Kommunikation längst zu Markt, Produktionsfaktor und gesellschaftlicher Macht geworden. Ständig kommen neue Medien hinzu, die Kommunikation verbreiten, vervielfältigen, erleichtern und verschönern wollen. Doch auch deren Zeichen und Botschaften müssen jeweils kommuniziert werden. So ist Kommunikation sowohl ein geläufiges, mitunter leeres Schlagwort wie auch ein spannendes und bedeutendes Denk- und Handlungsfeld, mit dem sich jeder im Alltag, aber auch fast alle Wissenschaftsdisziplinen befassen. Das Studienbuch will in dieses komplexe, kaum abgrenzbare Feld mit all seinen Aspekten einführen und zieht dazu möglichst viele Erklärungsansätze der Wissenschaften heran. Mehrfach wird die individuelle Reflexion angesprochen. So soll die persönliche, immer schon vorhandene kommunikative Kompetenz ebenso erkundet werden, wie sich wichtige theoretische Konzepte und empirische Befunde vorstellen lassen

- Abstract
- Multimedia wird unser Leben vermutlich ähnlich einschneidend verändern, wie der Buchdruck im 15. Jahrhundert unsere gesamte Kultur revolutioniert hat. Welche Veränderungen die neue Kommunikationstechnologie bringen wird, hängt nicht nur von der Hard- und Software der Multimediasysteme ab, sondern auch von der Hard- und Software des Menschen - von Gehirnprozessen und psychologischen 'Programmen' beim Denken, Wahrnehmen und Fühlen. Die Möglichkeiten, aber auch die Grenzen multimedialer Information werden deutlich, wenn man sich etwa vor Augen führt, wie viel Information wir allein beim Sehen ausblenden, wie wir Information im Gedächtnis abspeichern, wie wir verschiedenen Sinne synchronisieren. Auch für Medien gilt: Weniger ist manchmal mehr. Wenn man das Buch in die Hand nimmt und die Demonstrationsprogramme auf der beiliegenden CD-ROM dazu anschaut, wird man verstehen, warum es immer noch gewinnbringend ist, ein Buch zu lesen, und warum es durch ein elektronisches Medium sinnvoll ergänzt werden kann

- Abstract
- Schon über 20 Jahre hält sich der Begriff "neue Medien" mit fortschreitendem Umfang, aber gleichbleibender Unschärfe. Dennoch kann man als Kondensationspunkt die Digitalisierung der klassisch von der EDV und untereinander getrennten Bereiche Telekommunikation und Unterhaltungselektronik und in der Folge deren multimediale Verschmelzung ausmachen. Diese immer dynamischer werdende Entwicklung bringt laufend neue Vokabeln hervor, um deren populäre Erläuterung sich nach Brehpohl (s.o.) und S. Pitzer (BA 9/95) auch dieses Lexikon bemüht. Die Auswahl ist pragmatisch und aktuell, verzichtet im Vergleich zu o.g. Brepohl auf allgemeine Begriffe der Informatik und Elektronik (Daten, Nachricht, Photonik ...), bietet dafür mehr Termini zu heutiger Technik (GPS, Soundkarte ...) und stellt Dienstleistungen und Produkte ausführlicher dar (Game Boy, CompuServe). Neben der einführenden Skizze von Pitzer, vor Brepohl.

- Abstract
- Als "Technopol" bezeichnet Postman die Beherrschung einer Zivilisation durch Technik und technizistisches Denken, eine Entwicklung, die der New Yorker Medien-Prof. in den USA am weitesten fortgeschritten sieht. Die Folgen für Individuum und Gesellschaft illustriert er, wie immer in glänzender Diktion und mit sarkastischem Witz, u.a. an der Informationsschwemme, der Apparate-Medizin und der Computertechnologie. Das Schlusskapitel, immerhin, weckt ein Fünkchen Hoffnung auf möglichen Widerstand. Postmans neue Streitschrift (mit Anmerkungen, Bibliographie), thematisch an "Die Verweigerung der Hörigkeit" anknüpfend, reicht weder an die grossen Zeitdiagnosen eines G. Anders heran noch an J. Weizenbaums grundlegende Analyse der "Macht der Computer". Dennoch dürfen Postmans zeitgemässe Kassandrarufe inzwischen allgemeiner Aufmerksamkeit sicher sein.

- Telekommunikation und Datenverarbeitung ersetzen immer häufiger herkömmliche Formen der Kommunikation und Informationsverarbeitung. Mit den elektronischen Medien nehmen aber auch Gefährdungen der Vertraulichkeit und Fälschungsrisiken zu. Die notwendigen Sicherungsverfahren, elektronische Chiffrier- und Signaturverfahren sind schon länger bekannt. - Abstract
- Betrachtet wird der europäische Entwurf der Informationsgesellschaft in der Folge des EG-Weißbuches von 1993 und der Tagung in Korfu (1994). Es zeigt sich die zentrale Rolle des Informationsengineering. Hier geht es um die Produktion, Speicherung, Verteilung und Abfrage von Informationen. Wirtschaftliche Kennziffern beleuchten den deutschen Informationsmarkt (Online-Datenbanken, CD-ROM, Videotex, professionelle Informationsvermittlung). Die Relevanz elektronischer Informationsdienste für die betriebswirtschaftliche Praxis (Branchen- und Konkurrenzanalysen, Benchmarking) wird anhand von konkreten Beispielrecherchen demonstriert. Elektronische Datenbanken gestatten, die wissenschaftliche Forschung im Rahmen der Wissenschaftsevaluation mittels Publikations- Zitations- oder Themenanalysen zu beschreiben und zu bewerten. Ein Kapitel beschreibt detailliert diejenigen Tätigkeiten, die beim Auf- und Ausbau elektronischer Informationsdienste routinemäßig durchgeführt werden, mit dem Ziel, Qualitätsmerkmale für die Informationstätigkeit abzuleiten. Die Komplexität der Informationstätigkeiten führt u.a. in Bereiche der fuzzy logic und der Informationshermeneutik. Abgeschlossen wird das Buch mit einer 'Anatomie' einer konkreten Datenbank. - Abstract
- Je mehr Bedeutung gegenwärtig die elektronischen Medien erhalten, desto mehr wird es üblich- und offenbar auch notwendig -, die verschiedensten Phänomene in unserer Gesellschaft als Informations und als Kommunikationssysteme zu betrachten. Dieses Buch unternimmt den Versuch, diese zeitgemäße Sichtweise auch für die Behandlung der traditionellen Gegenstände der Sprachwissenschaft zu nutzen. Die Sprachgeschichte erscheint dann als Geschichte der Programmierung und Kodierung von Informationen, die Kulturgeschichte als eine Geschichte der Veränderung kommunikativer Systeme durch die Nutzung neuer Speicher- und Verbreitungsmedien. Mit diesem Konzept verbessern sich erheblich die Chancen das alte Problem des Zusammenhangs zwischen Sinnenwandel, Sprachwandel und Kulturwandel in einem einheitlichen theoretischen Rahmen befriedigend zu behandeln.

- Abstract
- Cyberspace ist aus medienwissenschaftlicher Sicht nur am Rande interessant, aufschlußreicher ist die Diskussion über Cyberspace und wie sie geführt wird. In der anglo-amerikanischen Medien- und Kommunikationsforschung - und in Ansätzen auch hierzulande - hat sich in der Folge der sog. 'cultural studies' die Einsicht durchgesetzt, daß einzelne Medien und spezifische Medieninhalte für sich allein genommen noch keinen Sinn machen. Sie müssen einerseits als Ausdruck und Teil der gesellschaftlichen Kommunikationsverhaältnisse begriffen werden, da sie zu symbolischen Verständigung der Gesellschaft über sich selbst beitragen. Andererseits entsteht ihr Sinn erst, wenn ihnen die Menschen in ihrem Alltag Bedeutungen zuweisen, d.h. wenn die Medien und ihre Inhalte in den Alltag übernommen werden. Habermas hat in seiner "Theorie des kommunikativen Handelns" darauf hingewiesen, daß die Massenmedien als generalisierte Formen der Kommunikation den lebensweltlichen Kontexten verhaftet bleiben, aus ihm können sie nicht heraustreten. Der Sinn eines Phänomens wie Cyberspace ist so nur aus seiner spezifischen Verwendung in kommunikativen Handlungen zu erschließen

- Abstract
- Medien prägen unser Bild von der Wirklichkeit. Das gilt für die Medien im weiten, im engen und im engsten Sinn. Unter Medien im weiten Sinn verstehe ich die Anschauungsformen von Raum und Zeit. Sie fungieren als grundlegende Medien unseres Wahrnehmens und Erkennens, indem sie Gegenstände als identische Entitäten synthetisierbar machen. Diese Einsicht liegt der »kopernikanischen Wende« zugrunde, mit der Kant der modernen Philosophie das Fundament bereitet hat. Die nachkantische Philosophie hat von Hegel und Nietzsche über Heidegger, Dewey und den späten Wittgenstein bis Derrida, Goodman und Rorty vor Augen geführt, daß die Stärke dieses Fundaments in seiner Beweglichkeit, Offenheit und Veränderlichkeit liegt. Bei unseren raum-zeitlichen »Wei- sen der Welterzeugung« handelt es sich nicht um starre, uniforme und ahistorische Apparaturen. Die Medien menschlicher Wirklichkeitskonstruktion sind vielmehr geprägt durch bildliche, sprachliche und schriftliche Zeichensysteme, die historisch kontingent sind und kulturell divergieren.
