- Abstract
- Eine der wesentlichen Aufgaben als Fachreferent*in ist die inhaltliche Erschließung der neuerworbenen Literatur, sowie die Begutachtung und Auswahl der neu erschienenen Werke in den jeweiligen Fachgebieten hinsichtlich der Relevanz für die eigenen Sammlungen gemäß dem Sammlungsprofil der TU Wien Bibliothek. Im Zuge der Corona-Krise wurde die herkömmliche Arbeitsweise in der Sacherschließung beeinträchtigt, und es haben sich neue Herausforderungen, aber auch Möglichkeiten ergeben. Neben der fehlenden Autopsie der Literatur leidet auch die Sichtung und Erwerbung neuer Literatur unter der physischen Abwesenheit vom Arbeitsplatz bzw. der entsprechenden technischen Infrastruktur. Auch der persönliche Austausch mit den Kolleg*innen wurde deutlich erschwert. Neben den Schwierigkeiten wurden aber auch die neuen Handlungsoptionen auf beruflicher und individueller Ebene positiv gesehen. In dem Artikel werden unsere individuellen Erfahrungen an der TU Wien Bibliothek sowie Ausblicke in die Zukunft wiedergegeben.

- Abstract
- Diskussionen um Datennetze und Informationstechnik drehen sich häufig um kompetentes Handeln. In der Publikation werden Voraussetzungen eines autonomen informationellen Handelns gezeigt: Abstrahieren, Analogien bilden, Plausibilitäten beachten, Schlussfolgern und kreativ sein. Informationelle Kompetenz ist gelebte Informationelle Autonomie. Es lassen sich Konsequenzen für ein zukünftiges Menschenbild in informationstechnischen Umgebungen ziehen.

- Abstract
- Werden Maschinen mit Begriffen beschrieben, die ursprünglich der Beschreibung des Menschen dienen, so liegt zunächst der Verdacht nahe, dass jene Maschinen spezifischmenschliche Fähigkeiten oder Eigenschaften besitzen. Für körperliche Fähigkeiten, die mechanisch nachgeahmt werden, hat sich in der Alltagssprache eine anthropomorphisierende Sprechweise bereits etabliert. So wird kaum in Frage gestellt, dass bestimmte Maschinen weben, backen, sich bewegen oder arbeiten können. Bei nichtkörperlichen Eigenschaften, etwa kognitiver, sozialer oder moralischer Art sieht dies jedoch anders aus. Dass mittlerweile intelligente und rechnende Maschinen im alltäglichen Sprachgebrauch Eingang gefunden haben, wäre jedoch undenkbar ohne den langjährigen Diskurs über Künstliche Intelligenz, welcher insbesondere die zweite Hälfte des vergangenen Jahrhunderts geprägt hat. In jüngster Zeit ist es der Autonomiebegriff, welcher zunehmend Verwendung zur Beschreibung neuer Technologien findet, wie etwa "autonome mobile Roboter" oder "autonome Systeme". Dem Begriff nach rekurriert die "Autonomie" jener Technologien auf eine bestimmte Art technologischen Fortschritts, die von der Fähigkeit zur Selbstgesetzgebung herrührt. Dies wirft aus philosophischer Sicht jedoch die Frage auf, wie die Selbstgesetzgebung in diesem Fall definiert ist, zumal sich der Autonomiebegriff in der Philosophie auf die politische oder moralische Selbstgesetzgebung von Menschen oder Menschengruppen beziehungsweise ihre Handlungen bezieht. Im Handbuch Robotik hingegen führt der Autor geradezu beiläufig die Bezeichnung "autonom" ein, indem er prognostiziert, dass "[.] autonome Roboter in Zukunft sogar einen Großteil der Altenbetreuung übernehmen werden."

Ihre kommunikative Architektur nährt Hoffnungen auf verbesserte gesellschaftliche Partizipation genauso wie Befürchtungen, immer mehr Bereiche des Lebens würden kommerzialisiert und überwacht. - Das World Wide Web unterscheidet sich strukturell erheblich von den traditionellen Medien und hat das Mediensystem von Grund auf verändert. Radikal sind die Auswirkungen der webtechnischen Innovation sowohl für die Medienlandschaft und die Gesellschaft als auch für diejenigen Wissenschaften, die sich mit Medien - deren Geschichte, Inhalten, Formen, Technik, Wirkungen usf. - befassen. - Abstract
- In einer Zukunftsvision der kalifornischen Technokultur wird die Singularitätmärchenhaft als der Moment verklärt, in dem die Fortschritte der Vernetzung und Rechenleistung darin gipfeln werden, dass Computer "Bewusstsein" und Unabhängigkeit vom Menschen erlangen.2 Der Mythos, dass die Maschinen eines Tages die Kontrolle über genau jene Menschheit übernehmen werden, der sie ihre Existenz verdanken, ist nach einem Jahrhundert Science-Fiction, von Samuel Butlers Roman Erewhon aus dem Jahr 1872 (der unter anderem Gilles Deleuze und Felix Guattari zu ihrem Begriff der Maschine angeregt hat) bis zum Film Matrix von 1999, zum Volks-Aberglauben geworden. Derartige dystopische und eindeutig reaktionäre Visionen bilden nicht nur den gegenwärtigen Konflikt zwischen kollektivem Körper und maschineller Ausbeutung ab, sondern stützen sich auch unverkennbar auf die techno-deterministische Annahme einer Autonomie der Maschinen von der politischen Macht des Sozialen. Am Begriff der Singularität lässt sich beispielhaft zeigen, wo das Netz seine Grenzen findet, wo Momente des Bruchs auftreten, und wo Transformationen zu neuen technologischen und sozialen Konfiguration stattfinden. Die Geschichte der Medien ist eine Geschichte der kontinuierlichen Akkumulation von Energie, eine Geschichte von Paradigmen-Brüchen und von Übergängen durch Momente der Singularität. Dabei reproduziert sich ein und dieselbe Ökonomie über alle Abfolgen von Krisen und Brüchen hinweg, von einer Produktionsform zur anderen, so dass man beinahe den Moment der Singularität selbst als das bestimmende Modell der Ökonomie betrachten könnte, die sich ja aus den Effekten der Akkumulation und der Verwandlung von einfachem Geld in Finanzkapital speist.

- "Kürzlich sah ich mir auf DVD den »Glöckner von Notre-Dame« in der Hollywood-Verfilmung von 1939 an und war schon vom Beginn angetan. Da begutachtet der französische König zusammen mit dem Dompropst Frollo neugierig eine der ersten Buchpressen. Ludwig XI. gibt sich - zumindest in diesem Film - als allem Modernen aufgeschlossener Monarch und lobt das neue Medium des Buchdrucks als Vehikel für Aufklärung und Volksbildung. Der Kirchenmann hingegen wittert im Verlust des klerikalen Meinungsmonopols sofort die Gefahr von Aufruhr und Ketzerei. Die Debatte um Wohl und Wehe des Internets, angeheizt durch Veröffentlichungen unzähliger Geheimdokumente auf der Plattform Wikileaks, baut ähnliche Fronten auf. Die Befürworter begrüßen einen ungeahnten Zuwachs an Informationsfreiheit und bürgerlicher Mündigkeit, während Kritiker vor der riskanten Störung heikler diplomatischer Beziehungen durch Geheimnisverrat warnen. Beunruhigend fand ich als Kreditkartenbesitzer, wie schnell Mastercard und Visa bereit waren, offenbar dem Druck von Regierungen gehorchend, Wikileaks vom Zahlungsverkehr auszusperren und damit in seiner auf Spenden angewiesenen Existenz zu bedrohen. So etwas läuft nach meiner Sicht auf indirekte-ökonomisch gehebelte-staatliche Zensur hinaus.
Doch so eindeutig sind Gut und Böse im Dreieck Bürger-Staat - Internet nicht verteilt. Nur auf den ersten Blick steht der Einzelne, der sein Recht auf uneingeschränkte Information beansprucht, im Bund mit einem möglichst freien Internet, während der Staat das neue Medium angeblich bloß reglementieren will. Zu einer anderen Einschätzung kommt der Rechtswissenschaftler Tim Wu von der New Yorker Columbia University in seinem Buch »The Master Switch: The Rise and Fall of Information Empires«. Wu untersucht die Geschichte der Medien Radio, Tonträger, Film, Fernsehen und Internet in den USA und demonstriert an zahlreichen Beispielen ein wiederkehrendes Muster: Die jeweils neueste Technik macht Firmen reich, die mit ihrer wirtschaftlichen Macht ein Monopol darauf durchsetzen. Erst die Einführung der nächsten »neuen« Medientechnik bricht die ökonomische Alleinherrschaft. Im Licht von Wus Befund muss ich mein Dreieck zu einem Quadrat erweitern, mit mächtigen Medienkonzernen als viertem Pol. Aktuelle Beispiele wären Google und Apple. Jeder von beiden schickt sich auf seine Weise an, ein geschlossenes System zu organisieren, das sich krakengleich über das Internet ausbreitet, um es möglichst umfassend zu vereinnahmen. Der Grund ist nicht etwa, dass die zwei Möchtegern-Monopolisten »böse« wären - sie sind nur einfach auf expansives Wirtschaften programmiert. Im Viereck Bürger -Staat - Internet -Wirtschaft kommt darum dem Staat laut Wu eine durchaus positive Rolle zu: Er soll verhindern, dass das neue Medium von Konzernen vereinnahmt wird. So könnte etwa eine Kartellbehörde ihr Augenmerk speziell auf geballte Medienmacht im Internet richten. Übrigens: Wissen Sie, warum »Der Glöckner von Notre-Dame« in Hollywood gedreht wurde? Auch darüber gibt Wus Buch Auskunft. Die Firma des Erfinders Thomas Edison kontrollierte Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts mit ihren Patenten die gesamte Filmtechnik. Unter anderem diktierte sie, dass ein Kinofilm nur wenige Minuten lang sein dürfe, um die Aufmerksamkeit des Publikums nicht zu ermüden. Vor solchen Vorschriften flohen die ersten Filmstudios von der Ostküstenach Kalifornien - und gründeten Hollywood."

- Abstract
- Der Beitrag skizziert vor dem Hintergrund handlungstheoretischer Grundlagen ein Modell der Kompetenzen für die Aneignung sozialer Medien, das sowohl auf die Fähigkeiten und Fertigkeiten der Nutzenden Bezug nimmt als auch aktuelle Herausforderungen für eine adäquate Medienkompetenzförderung berücksichtigt. Zentraler Ausgangspunkt ist, dass Menschen nicht von vornherein die notwendigen Fähigkeiten für den Umgang mit Medien besitzen, sondern diese sukzessive im Umgang mit Medien entwickeln und durch Anregung von "außen", d.?h. aus ihrem sozialen und erzieherischen Umfeld, Anstöße für die Weiterentwicklung ihrer Fähigkeiten erhalten. Herausgearbeitet wird, welche Fähigkeiten entwickelt werden müssen, um in einer vernetzten und digitalisierten Welt, in der soziale Medien zunehmend zu Dreh- und Angelpunkten des Kommunikationsverhaltens werden, ihr Leben souverän gestalten zu können.

- Abstract
- Die Darstellung der eigenen Identität stellt eine Grundvoraussetzung der Nutzung sozialer Medien dar und wird dennoch sehr widersprüchlich diskutiert, beispielsweise, wenn in Massenmedien die "Selbstdarstellungskultur" als bedenklicher gesellschaftlicher Trend dargestellt wird. Dieser Beitrag zeigt auf, wie Identitätskonstruktion als zentrale Entwicklungsaufgabe des Menschen zunehmend auch innerhalb sozialer Medien stattfindet und welche besonderen Ausdrucksformen dabei auftreten können. Online- und Offline-Identitäten ergänzen sich gegenseitig und bringen jeweils spezifische Chancen, aber auch Risiken mit sich, die im Rahmen dieses Beitrags diskutiert werden.

- Abstract
- Die Darstellung von Bibliotheken und Bibliothekaren ist von den Anfängen des Kinos bis zur Gegenwart ein fester Bestandteil der Filmgeschichte. Dennoch ist der Darstellung der Institution Bibliothek in der akademischen Diskussion bisher wenig Beachtung geschenkt worden. Die wenigen Beiträge sind sich in ihrer Betrachtung von Bibliotheken im Film erstaunlicherweise darin einig, dass Bibliotheken vorrangig die Funktion einer atmosphärischen Kulisse einnehmen und darüber hinaus nur selten eine weitergehende, für die Handlung erhebliche Bedeutung erfahren. Diese undifferenzierte Sicht auf Bibliotheken im Film wird der Fülle und Vielfalt der Darstellungen jedoch nicht gerecht. Um die Vielschichtigkeit der Thematik besser zu erfassen, wird in diesem Artikel ein Analysemodell vorgeschlagen, das eine strukturierte Einordnung von Bibliotheksdarstellungen im Film erlaubt. Anhand vier filmischer Beispiele - Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), Misery (1990), City of Angels (1998) und The Shawshank Redemption (1994) - werden unterschiedliche Ausprägungsformen von Bibliothekdarstellungen im Film aufgezeigt. Diese Fallbeispiele verdeutlichen, dass die Funktionen und Bedeutungen von Bibliotheken im Film wesentlich vielfältiger sind als bisher allgemein angenommen. Es lässt sich in zudem in Ansätzen herausarbeiten, mit welchen Attributen und Werten Bibliotheken konventionell in Verbindung gebracht werden.

- Abstract
- Soziale Medien und Überwachung sind untrennbar miteinander verbunden. Da der Begriff der Überwachung eine wechselhafte Geschichte hat, wird anfangs ein Überblick über die unterschiedlichen konzeptuellen und operationalen Bedeutungen des Begriffes gegeben. Daran anschließend wird erläutert, inwiefern das Geschäftsmodell aller großen Plattformen auf der Sammlung von Daten gründet. Zweitens sind Social-Media-Plattformen zunehmend ein Datenschatz für staatliche Akteure wie Polizeien und Geheimdienste. Drittens meint Überwachung und Kontrolle im Kontext sozialer Medien auch die laterale Überwachung der Benutzer untereinander. Im letzten Schritt dieses Beitrags wird die Zunahme der mobilen Nutzung sozialer Medien diskutiert und die sich hierbei addierenden Überwachungsaspekte erklärt.
