    Abstract
    Seit dem 17. Jahrhundert wird die Diskussion in der Philosophie durch den Begriff der Repräsentation bestimmt. Man vergleicht das Bewußtsein mit einem Spiegel, der die Realität reflektiert. Das Erkennen bemüht sich um die Genauigkeit dieser Reflexion, und die Arbeit des Erkennens besteht im Prüfen, Instandsetzen und Polieren des Spiegels der Natur. In einer eindringlichen und weit ausgreifenden Kritik dieser Metaphorik gibt Richard Rorty eine Übersicht ihres Einflusses auf die Philosophie des 20. Jahrhunderts: eine kritische Selbstreflexion der analytischen Philosophie, die zur Dekonstruktion der bezeichneten Metaphorik führt. In den drei Teilen dieses Buches diskutiert Rorty jeweils die Begriffe des Mentalen, der Erkenntnis und der Philosophie in einer von Dewey, Heidegger und Wittgenstein ausgehenden historischen Perspektive.

    Abstract
    Ist die uns vertraute Wirklichkeit von unserem Denken und Erkennen unabhängig? Der Realismus gibt auf diese Frage eine positive, die verschiedenen Formen des Antirealismus eine negative Antwort. Doch die Diskussion zwischen Realisten und Antirealisten beruht auf einem Missverständnis des zugrundeliegenden Problems. Dieses liegt nicht in der Denkunabhängigkeit der Wirklichkeit, sondern in unserem mentalen Zugang zu ihr: Wie können wir über eine von Erkennen und Denken unabhängige Wirklichkeit Wissen erlangen und wie können wir uns im Denken überhaupt auf sie beziehen? Eine "kontextualistische" Zurückweisung des Skeptizismus und eine neuartige ("normativdisjunktive") Konzeption theoretischer Intentionalität sollen zeigen, dass die mentale Zugänglichkeit der Wirklichkeit durch ihre Denkunabhängigkeit nicht in Frage gestellt wird. Das Ergebnis ist die indirekte Verteidigung eines "direkten" Realismus. Es scheint, dass sich elf Jahre nach dem Erscheinen der ersten Auflage dieses Buches der Trend weg vom antirealistischen und hin zu realistischen Positionen in der Philosophie weiter verstärkt hat. Andererseits haben sich Autoren wie McDowell und Brandom immer stärker Hegel zugewandt, ohne sich von den idealistischen Implikationen seiner Philosophie abschrecken zu lassen. Die Debatte über Realismus und Antirealismus ist also keineswegs abgeschlossen.

    Der amerikanische Medizin-Nobelpreisträger ist im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Hirnforschern davon überzeugt, daß die Biologie den Schlüssel zum Verständnis des Gehirns und damit des menschlichen Geistes liefert. Seine These vertritt er in der vorliegenden Veröffentlichung. Sie "ist von einer erstaunlichen Vielfalt, die von der Philosophie zur Biologie, zur Psychologie und zur Computersimulation des Nervensystems reicht und daraus ein Ganzes zu machen versucht".     "Dieses Buch enthält eine Sammlung von Aufsätzen, in denen ich Fragen wie die folgenden zu beantworten suche; Was heißt es zu erkennen? Was tun wir, wenn wir von Realität oder dem Realen sprechen? Was behaupten wir, wenn wir von Objektivität sprechen? Wie vollzieht sich Beobachten? Um zu verstehen, wie wir Menschen leben, sind Fragen wie diese meines Erachtens grundlegend. Es sind Fragen, die sich auf biologische Phänomene beziehen und biologisch beantwortet werden müssen. Genau dies tue ich in den hier vorgelegten Aufsätzen: Ich entwickle eine biologische Theorie des Erkennens. Und zwar beantworte ich die Fragen, um die es in diesen Aufsätzen geht, als Wissenschaftler nicht als Philosoph. Natürlich reflektiere ich über das, was ich tue, und über die Gültigkeit dessen, was ich sage, und insofern philosophiere ich, aber ich beantworte die Fragen über Kognition und Realität als Fragen, die es mit der Biologie des menschlichen Lebens zu tun haben, ich beantworte sie als Wissenschaftler und entwickle eine wissenschaftliche Theorie des Erkennens."     Abstract
    "Stellen sie sich vor, über Nacht, als alles schlief, sei unbemerkt alles im Universum doppelt so groß geworden. Könnte man feststellen, daß dies geschehen ist?", "Wie überprüft man die Hypothese 'Alle Raben sind schwarz?`". Mit solchen Fragestellungen schafft es Autor Poundstone die grauen Zellen seiner Leser anzuregen und sie zum Nachdenken über scheinbare und reale Paradoxien bringen. Dabei werden dem Leser köstliche Anekdoten und Probleme aus allen Bereichen des Lebens und der Philosophie vorgeführt. Wem "Gödel, Escher, Bach" gefallen hat, wird an diesem Werk seine wahre Freude haben. Wem "GEB" zu formellastig war, findet hier ein Buch, daß fast ohne Formeln auskommt, und auch für wissenschaftliche Laien sehr gut und flüssig lesbar ist. Inbesondere der lockere und ungezwungene Humor machen dieses Buch sehr kurzweilig. Es kommt selten vor, daß man Sachbücher verschlingt, wie einen guten Krimi, aber dieses Buch ist nur sehr schwer aus der Hand zu legen, insbesondere für den günstigen Preis der Taschenbuchausgabe.

    Abstract
    In seiner Schrift "Gedanken über die Nachahmung der griechischen Werke in der Malerei und Bildhauerkunst" 1755 kennzeichnet Winckelmann die antike Laokoon-Plastik als "des Polyklets Regel; eine vollkommene Regel der Kunst". Diese Deutung löst seit Lessings Schrift "Laokoon: oder über die Grenzen der Malerei und Poesie" 1766 eine Kontroverse über ästhetische Begründungen der Künste aus. Die Reflexion auf die Laokoon-Skulptur spiegelt paradigmatisch Tendenzen ästhetischer Theoriebildung in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts. Die skizzierten Theorien der Laokoon-Diskussion - Winckelmann, Lessing, Herder, Schiller, Goethe - dokumentieren unterschiedliche Modelle der Deutung einer "vollkommenen Regel der Kunst". Seit Winckelmann steht die ästhetische Diskussion um Regeln der Kunst im Zusammenhang mit dem Begriff des Pathos und ist damit jeweils fundiert in Theorien des Zusammenhangs von Anthropologie und Ästhetik. Die vorliegende Untersuchung zielt darauf, die am Beispiel der Laokoon-Diskussion gegebene Entwicklung der Theorien künstlerischer Heuristik nachzuzeichnen und Veränderungen kunsttheoretischer Parameter zu verdeutlichen. In den Veränderungen der Deutungsverfahren des einzelnen Kunstwerks zeigt sich bei den genannten Autoren der Wandel der problemgeschichtlichen Bestimmungen des Ästhetischen im Spannungsfeld von Anthropologie, Ethik, Erkenntnistheorie, Stil- und Gattungstheorie.

Anspruchsvoll streben die ersten Bände der Edition danach, den Lesern die Welt zu erklären, oder kantischer noch, die Bedingungen einer solchen Welterklärung zu diskutieren. In diese Kategorie fällt auch der Band von Olaf Breidbach über die »Neuen Wissensordnungen«, der eben nicht bestimmtes Wissen vermitteln möchte, sondern das Wissen für sich als kulturelles und historisches Phänomen in den Blick nimmt. Das lässt eigentlich - für Bibliothekare als Arbeiter an oder in der Wissensordnung zumal - interessante Lektüre erwarten. Doch dürfte es auch außerhalb unseres Berufsstandes nicht allzu viele Leser geben, die Honig aus dem Büchlein saugen können, weil der Jenaer Professor für die Geschichte der Naturwissenschaften mehr Mühe auf die Ausbreitung seines reichen Materials denn auf seine Aufbereitung verwandt hat. Das Buch wird regiert von zwei Grundgedanken, die Breidbach verschiedentlich wiederholt. Der erste steckt auch im Titel: »Information« und »Wissen« sind nicht dasselbe, sondern Wissen entsteht erst aus Information, und zwar durch Interpretation und Reflexion. Wissen ist »interpretierte Information« (Seite 12, 168 und weitere). Der zweite betrifft das Wesen der Interpretation: Eine neue Information kann nur interpretiert werden, indem man sie in Beziehung setzt zu dem, was schon gewusst wird, also indem man sie in das »Netz« seines Wissens einbezieht - und dies führt notwendig dazu, dass das Netz sich verändert. Wissensordnung muss man dynamisch verstehen, nicht statisch! Das Buch versucht zu erklären, was diese beiden Gedanken bedeuten und welche Folgen sie haben dafür, wie Wissensordnung zu modellieren wäre. Dem ersten Gedanken nähert man sich vielleicht am einfachsten über einen Vergleich mit der platonischen Wissensauffassung, die als Diskussionsfolie auch noch die zeitgenössische Erkenntnistheorie regiert. . . .

Im Zeitablauf bildet sich dann der Mythos, dieses Werk zähle zur Rubrik der Klassiker oder Must-Reads. Karl Poppers "Klassiker" (im positiven Sinne) gehört mit Sicherheit in diese Kategorie. Schade ist daran, daß "Logik der Forschung" aus diesem Grunde scheinbar mit einer ungebührlichen Ehrfurcht und Scheu betrachtet wird. Dabei ist es nicht nur verständlich geschrieben, sondern in Teilen geradezu unterhaltsam zu lesen! (Das glaubt jetzt wahrscheinlich wieder keiner!) "Logik der Forschung" bietet jedem wissenschaftlich Interessierten einen grundlegenden Zugang zu den Methoden der empirischen Wissenschaft. Dort, wo viele Bücher über wissenschaftliche und/oder statistische Methoden anfangen, geht Popper noch einen oder zwei Schritte zurück, indem er dem Leser erst einmal plausibel macht, WARUM es eigentlich nötig ist, Althergebrachtes neu zu hinterfragen und sich von traditionellen Vorstellungen zu lösen. Jedem, der wissenschaftlich arbeiten oder nur kritisch denken will, sei dieses Buch ans Herz gelegt. Denn jede noch so moderne wissenschaftliche Methode läßt sich nicht zweckmäßig anwenden und vor allem interpretieren, wenn einem nicht z.B. die Induktionsproblematik geläufig ist, die Tatsache, daß sich Theorien und Modelle empirisch nicht verifizieren, sondern nur falsifizieren lassen. (Nach dem Motto: "Ich habe bisher nur schwarze Raben gesehen, also sind alle Raben schwarz!") Dieses Buch schult den kritischen Geist und ist deshalb eigentlich für jeden interessant. Darüber hinaus ist es wirklich gut geschrieben, vor allem im ersten Teil. Eine wirklich lohnende Investition. Laßt es nicht zum verstaubten "Klassiker" verkommen!!!
