- Abstract
- Das Phänomen des menschlichen Bewußtseins wird in ein übergreifendes Gefüge physikalischer wie informationstheoretischer Zusammenhänge eingeordnet. Der dänische Wissenschaftsjournalist Tor Noerretranders macht sich Gedanken über das Bewußtsein. Ich denke, also bin ich? "Nein", meint er, "nicht ich denke, sondern es denkt in mir, und dem, was wir 'ich' nennen, wird nur das Resultat bewußt, ein winziger Bruchteil dessen, was 'es' wahrgenommen und verarbeitet hat." Aber was ist dieses "es", das Selbst, wie es der Autor nennt? In seinem Buch beschreibt er eine Reihe naturwissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse, die zeigen, daß das Bewußtsein nicht das Zentrum unserer Entscheidungen und Handlungen ist, und daß wir zum größten Teil "nichtbewußt" denken und agieren. "Wir haben", so sagt er, "die besten 'Auftritte', wenn wir unserem Selbst freien Lauf lassen, wenn wir gerade nicht versuchen, es durch das Ich zu kontrollieren."

- Abstract
- Das Problem der Wahrnehmung und Darstellung von Wahrheit durch die Medien führt zu vier zentralen Fragen: Wie viel Wahrheit gibt es in der Welt, über die Journalisten berichten müssen? Wie ermittelt oder recherchiert man diese Wahrheit? Wie trennt man die Spreu vom Weizen? Und wie geht man als Journalist mit dem um, was man als Wahrheit erkannt hat oder erkannt zu haben glaubt? Hier gibt es ganz offensichtlich eine Parallele zwischen Journalisten und Wissenschaftlern. Journalisten und Wissenschaftler brauchen erstens Hypothesen, zweitens geeignete Hypothesentests, drittens ein gutes Abgrenzungs-Kriterium und viertens Verfahren, um die erkannten Sachverhalte auf angemessene Weise für eine Kommunikation mit anderen zu repräsentieren, das heißt sie darzustellen. Es gibt zwei große Unterschiede zwischen Journalisten und Wissenschaftlern: Journalisten sind in der Regel auf raum-zeitlich begrenzte Aussagen aus, Wissenschaftler in der Regel auf raumzeitlich unbegrenzte Gesetze. Aber diese Unterschiede sind fließend, weil Wissenschaftler raum-zeitlich begrenzte Aussagen brauchen, um ihre All-Aussagen zu überprüfen, und Journalisten sich immer häufiger auf das Feld der allgemeinen Gesetzes-Aussagen wagen oder doch zumindest Kausalinterpretationen für soziale Phänomene anbieten. Der zweite Unterschied besteht darin, dass die Wissenschaft weitgehend professionalisiert ist (zumindest gilt dies uneingeschränkt für die Naturwissenschaften und die Medizin), was ihr relativ klare Abgrenzungs- und Güte-Kriterien beschert hat. Diese fehlen weitgehend im Journalismus.

In der Publikation werden Voraussetzungen eines autonomen informationellen Handelns gezeigt: Abstrahieren, Analogien bilden, Plausibilitäten beachten, Schlussfolgern und kreativ sein. Informationelle Kompetenz ist gelebte Informationelle Autonomie. Es lassen sich Konsequenzen für ein zukünftiges Menschenbild in informationstechnischen Umgebungen ziehen.

- Abstract
- Lange Zeit schien es, als habe die Naturwissenschaft den Geist aus der wissenschaftlichen Weltsicht verdrängt. Doch seit die Quantenphysik gezeigt hat, daß sich die Welt der Materie nicht ohne Einbeziehung des Bewußtseins erklären läßt, stellt sich den verschiedenen Naturwissenschaften immer dringlicher die Frage: Was ist der Geist? Wie funktioniert das Bewußtsein? Und wenn die Erkenntnis der Welt die Erkenntnis des Erkennenden voraussetzt - wie kann das Auge sich selbst sehen, der Verstand sich selbst verstehen, das Bewußtsein seine eigenen Funktionen erfassen? Diese Fragen zu beantworten ist das Ziel einer neuen, interdisziplinären Forschungsrichtung: der Kognitionswissenschaft. In ihr fließen Neurobiologie, experimentelle Psychologie, Verhaltens- und Bewußtseinsforschung, Künstliche Intelligenz und andere wissenschaftliche Disziplinen zusammen mit den Einsichten fernöstlicher Erkenntnislehren. Damit wird die Kognitionswissenschaft, die »neue Wissenschaft vom Bewußtsein«, den menschlichen Geist nicht nur theoretisch beschreiben, sondern auch Wege zu seiner Erweiterung und Transformation im Zeichen des Wertewandels in Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft aufzeigen können.

- Abstract
- In diesem Buch werden die neuesten kenntnisse über die biologischen, evolutionsbiologischen und neurobiologischen Grundlagen von Wahrnehmung und Erkenntnisleistungen, von Bewußtsein und Geist dargestellt. Es wird diskutiert, wie und innerhalb welcher Grenzen mit den heutigen neurophysiologischen und bildgebenden Verfahren Bewußtsein und Geist 'sichtbar' gemacht werden können. Auf diesen Grundlagen aufbauend, wird im Sinne des Konstruktivismus ein philosophisch-erkenntnistheoretisches Konzept des menschlichen Erlenntnisvermögens entwickelt, das zugleich einen nichtreduktionistischen Physikalismus vertritt. Dieser nimmt im Gegensatz zu einem Dualismus die Einheitlichkeit der Natur auch für die Gehirn-Geist-Beziehung an, ohne zugleich Geist auf die Aktivität von Nervenzellen reduzieren zu wollen. Insbesondere wird auf die Frage nach der Herkunft und Natur unserer Erlebniswelt - der 'Wirklichkeit' - eingegangen sowie auf die Frage nach ihrer Beziehung zu einer bewußtseinsunabhängigen 'Realität'. Die Beantwortung dieser Frage hat weitreichende Konsequenzen für den erkenntnistheoretischen Status (natur)wissenschaftlicher Aussagen. Ein Anspruch auf 'Wahrheit' im Sinne objektiv gültiger Aussagen muß verneint werden - im Wissenschaftsalltag wird ein solcher Anspruch auch gar nicht erhoben.

- Abstract
- Die Wissensoziologie fußt auf einer radikalen Soziologisierung des Wissens: Daß Vergesellschaftung sich im Medium des Wissens vollzieht und alles Wissen standortgebunden ist, haben Autoren wie Scheler und Mannheim Ende der 20er Jahre eingeführt. Die Beziehungen zwischen Wissen und Gesellschaft werden seither im Hinblick auch die Produktion, Zirkulation und Rezeption von Denkstilen und Wissensbeständen untersucht. Wichtige Weiterentwicklungen finden sich in der (post-)strukturalistischen Diskursanalyse, der systemtheoretischen Semantikanalyse, dem 'strong programme' und der Sozialphänomenologie der Lebenswelt. Vor diesem Hintergrund konstatiert Sabine Maasen in ihrem Buch "Wissenssoziologie", das in der Reihe "Einsichten. Soziologische Themen" im Transcript-Verlag erschienen ist, eine neue Aufgabe für die etwas aus der Mode gekommene Wissenssoziologie. Die Vielfalt der soziologischen Problematisierungsmöglichkeiten von Wissen zeigt die Autorin dabei anhand eines theoriegeschichtlichen Abrisses von der Tradition der Ideologiekritik bis zu den Wissenstheorien eines Foucault oder eines Luhmann. Die große Leistung dieses Buches besteht aber vor allem in der Skizzierung der Aufgabe, diese wissenssoziologischen Konzepte für den aktuellen Diskurs über die "Wissensgesellschaft" fruchtbar zu machen, der bislang gerade unter einem soziologisch defizitären Wissensbegriff leidet. Insgesamt eröffnet der Band sowohl ideengeschichtliche Perspektiven auf die Wissenssoziologie als auch systematische Perspektiven auf die "Wissensgesellschaft". - Abstract
- Information ist ein allgegenwärtiger Begriff im Alltag, in den Wissenschaften und in der Philosophie. Heute wird er immer mehr von den Naturwissenschaften als ureigenster Gegenstand reklamiert: Er wird »naturalisiert«. Das Buch zeichnet den Weg nach, wie aus Physik und Mathematik Auffassungen entstehen, die über die Wissenschaftstheorie und die Sprachphilosophie zur Grundlage der Nachrichtentechnik und der Kybernetik werden, um schließlich bei der »Erbinformation« und anderen Naturgegenständen zu landen. So entsteht eine mißverstandene Form des Körper-Geist- Problems: Wie kommen technische Objekte, aber auch Moleküle im menschlichen Genom zu Eigenschaften, die ursprünglich der menschlichen Sprache vorbehalten waren? Dieses Buch korrigiert Mißverständnisse, weist heute übliche Ausdrucksweisen als (teilweise irrtümliche) Metaphern aus und rekonstruiert das menschliche Handeln und Sprechen als Grundlage von technischen und natürlichen Formen der Informationsverarbeitung.

- Abstract
- 1990 wurde in Amerika die «Dekade des Hirns» ausgerufen. Zehn Jahre später erklärten auch in Deutschland führende Hirnforscher eine «Dekade des menschlichen Gehirns». Mit neuester Technologie wollten sie «dem Gehirn beim Arbeiten zusehen», Ursachen krankhafter Fehlfunktionen ergründen und Aufschlüsse über mentale Prozesse wie Wahrnehmung, Informationsverarbeitung und Sprache gewinnen. Revolutionäre Erkenntnisse über das Wesen höherer kognitiver Leistungen lieferten sie bis heute nicht, auch wenn manche Neurowissenschaftler dies anders sehen. Für Kultur- und Geisteswissenschaftler ist menschliches Denken und Wissen das Ergebnis kulturgeschichtlicher Entwicklung, die mit naturwissenschaftlichen Methoden nicht entschlüsselbar sei. Wie aber ist die Verbindung von Körper und Geist vorstellbar? Jede mögliche Antwort ist Vorstellung oder Gedanke und beantwortet daher die Frage nicht wirklich. Ist das gelebte Leben die Antwort?

- Als "Technopol" bezeichnet Postman die Beherrschung einer Zivilisation durch Technik und technizistisches Denken, eine Entwicklung, die der New Yorker Medien-Prof. in den USA am weitesten fortgeschritten sieht. Die Folgen für Individuum und Gesellschaft illustriert er, wie immer in glänzender Diktion und mit sarkastischem Witz, u.a. an der Informationsschwemme, der Apparate-Medizin und der Computertechnologie. Das Schlusskapitel, immerhin, weckt ein Fünkchen Hoffnung auf möglichen Widerstand. Postmans neue Streitschrift (mit Anmerkungen, Bibliographie), thematisch an "Die Verweigerung der Hörigkeit" anknüpfend, reicht weder an die grossen Zeitdiagnosen eines G. Anders heran noch an J. Weizenbaums grundlegende Analyse der "Macht der Computer". Dennoch dürfen Postmans zeitgemässe Kassandrarufe inzwischen allgemeiner Aufmerksamkeit sicher sein.
