- The editorial and peer review processes appear to be slightly spotty in application. All of the 55 papers are in English but a few of them are in such need of basic editing that they are almost incomprehensible in sections. Consider, for example, the following: "So, the meaning of region where we are studying on, should be discovered and then affect on the final plan" (p. 346). The collection shows a strong array of methodological approaches including quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods studies; however, a few of the research efforts exhibit fundamental design flaws. Consider, for example, the study that "set[s] out to show that nurses as care-givers find it difficult to transfer any previously acquired technological skills into their work based on technology needs (p. 187). After studying 39 female and 6 male nurses, this study finds, not surprisingly, exactly what it "set out" to find. Rather than noting the limitations of sample size and data gathering techniques, the paper firmly concludes that nurses can be technologists "only in areas of technology that support their primary role as carers" (p. 188). Finally, some of the papers do not report on original research but are competent, if brief, summaries of theories or concepts that are covered in equal depth elsewhere. For example, a three-page summary of "the major personality and learning theories" (p. 3) is useful but lacks the intellectual depth or insight needed to contribute substantially to the field. These problems with composition, methodological rigor, and theoretical depth are not uncommon in papers designed for a broadly defined conference theme. The authors may have been writing for an in-person audience and anticipating thoughtful postpresentation discussions; they probably had no idea of the heavy price tag put on their work. The editors, however, might have kept that $256 in mind and exercised a heavier editorial hand. Perhaps the publisher could have paid for a careful subject indexing of the work as a substantive addition to the author index provided. The complexity of the subject domains included in the volume certainly merits careful indexing.

- Abstract
- Ziel aller professioneller Aktivitäten der in der DGI organisierten Informationsfachleute ist es, bedarfsgerecht die Verfügbarkeit von Informationen sicher zu stellen. Als Motto der 60.Jahrestagung und 30. Online-Tagung der DGI bietet diese Zielsetzung den Rahmen für ein vielseitiges Programm, das Information Professionals aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln interessante Einblicke in informationswissenschaftliche Forschung, praktische Anwendungen, das Berufsfeld, die Ausbildungssituation und geplante Projekte bietet. Dabei begleiten uns die zentralen Fragen, unter welchen Bedingungen eine Information für wen heute verfügbar ist, wie sich die Verfügbarkeit auch bei sich wandelnden Technologien und Rezeptionsgewohnheiten für die Zukunft sichern lässt und die alte, doch immer wieder neue Frage nach der 'Dokumentationswürdigkeit' aufgrund von Qualität oder betrieblichen Notwendigkeiten und juristischen Regelungen. Der Band vereinigt die Textfassungen der Beiträge, die durch das Progammkomitee angenommen worden sind, dazu gehören u.a. die suche nach Bildern oder Patenten mit Suchmaschinen, Competitive Intelligence, Sicherung von Primärdaten, Langfristige Nutzbarkeit und Standardisierung, Qualitätskriterien, automatische und intellektuelle Erschließung, Ontologien oder Erfahrungen mit dem Einsatz von Wikis.

Fuller defines media ecology as "the allocation of informational roles in organizations and in computer-supported collaborative work" (p. 3), a fairly comprehensive definition. Fuller opens with a study of a pirate radio in London. Adapting thinkers on media and culture-Stuart Hall, J. F. Gibson's ecological psychology, Deleuze and Guattari figure prominently here. Exploring the attempted regulation of radio, the dissemination into multiple "forms," and the structures that facilitate this, Fuller presents the environment in which "subversive" radio broadcasts take place. Marketing and voices, microphones, and language codes all begin to interact with each other to form a higher order of a material or "machinic" universe (Fuller here adapts Deleuze and Guattari's concept of a "machinic phylum" defined as "materiality, natural or artificial, and both simultaneously; it is matter in movement, in flux, in variation, matter as a conveyer of singularities and traits of expression," p. 17). Using hip-hop as a case study, Fuller argues that digitized sound transforms the voice from indexical to the "rhythmatic." Music becomes fundamentally synthetic here (p. 31), and acquires the potential to access a greater space of embodiment. Other factors, often ignored in media studies, include the role of the DJs (disk jockies), are worked into a holistic account. The DJ, notes Fuller is a switch for the pirate station, but is also a creator of hype. Storing, transposing, organizing time, the DJ is a crucial element in the informational ecology of the radio station. Fuller argues that "things" like the mobile phone must be treated as media assemblages. Pirate radio is an example of the minoritarian use of media systems, according to Fuller.

Oberhauser): "Mit diesem Band haben zwei herausragende Vertreter der europäischen Informationswissenschaft, die Professoren Peter Ingwersen (Kopenhagen) und Kalervo Järvelin (Tampere) ein Werk vorgelegt, das man vielleicht dereinst als ihr opus magnum bezeichnen wird. Mich würde dies nicht überraschen, denn die Autoren unternehmen hier den ambitionierten Versuch, zwei informations wissenschaftliche Forschungstraditionen, die einander bisher in eher geringem Ausmass begegneten, unter einem gesamtheitlichen kognitiven Ansatz zu vereinen - das primär im sozialwissenschaftlichen Bereich verankerte Forschungsgebiet "Information Seeking and Retrieval" (IS&R) und das vorwiegend im Informatikbereich angesiedelte "Information Retrieval" (IR). Dabei geht es ihnen auch darum, den seit etlichen Jahren zwar dominierenden, aber auch als zu individualistisch kritisierten kognitiven Ansatz so zu erweitern, dass technologische, verhaltensbezogene und kooperative Aspekte in kohärenter Weise berücksichtigt werden. Dies geschieht auf folgende Weise in neun Kapiteln: - Zunächst werden die beiden "Lager" - die an Systemen und Laborexperimenten orientierte IR-Tradition und die an Benutzerfragen orientierte IS&R-Fraktion - einander gegenübergestellt und einige zentrale Begriffe geklärt. - Im zweiten Kapitel erfolgt eine ausführliche Darstellung der kognitiven Richtung der Informationswissenschaft, insbesondere hinsichtlich des Informationsbegriffes. - Daran schliesst sich ein Überblick über die bisherige Forschung zu "Information Seeking" (IS) - eine äusserst brauchbare Einführung in die Forschungsfragen und Modelle, die Forschungsmethodik sowie die in diesem Bereich offenen Fragen, z.B. die aufgrund der einseitigen Ausrichtung des Blickwinkels auf den Benutzer mangelnde Betrachtung der Benutzer-System-Interaktion. - In analoger Weise wird im vierten Kapitel die systemorientierte IRForschung in einem konzentrierten Überblick vorgestellt, in dem es sowohl um das "Labormodell" als auch Ansätze wie die Verarbeitung natürlicher Sprache und Expertensysteme geht. Aspekte wie Relevanz, Anfragemodifikation und Performanzmessung werden ebenso angesprochen wie die Methodik - von den ersten Laborexperimenten bis zu TREC und darüber hinaus.
- Kapitel fünf enthält einen entsprechenden Überblick über die kognitive und benutzerorientierte IR-Tradition. Es zeigt, welche anderen (als nur die labororientierten) IR-Studien durchgeführt werden können, wobei sich die Betrachtung von frühen Modellen (z.B. Taylor) über Belkins ASK-Konzept bis zu Ingwersens Modell der Polyrepräsentation, und von Bates Berrypicking-Ansatz bis zu Vakkaris "taskbased" IR-Modell erstreckt. Auch Web-IR, OKAPI und Diskussionen zum Relevanzbegriff werden hier thematisiert. - Im folgenden Kapitel schlagen die Autoren ein integriertes IS&R Forschungsmodell vor, bei dem die vielfältigen Beziehungen zwischen Informationssuchenden, Systementwicklern, Oberflächen und anderen beteiligten Aspekten berücksichtigt werden. Ihr Ansatz vereint die traditionelle Laborforschung mit verschiedenen benutzerorientierten Traditionen aus IS&R, insbesondere mit den empirischen Ansätzen zu IS und zum interaktiven IR, in einem holistischen kognitiven Modell. - Kapitel sieben untersucht die Implikationen dieses Modells für IS&R, wobei besonders ins Auge fällt, wie komplex die Anfragen von Informationssuchenden im Vergleich mit der relativen Einfachheit der Algorithmen zum Auffinden relevanter Dokumente sind. Die Abbildung der vielfältig variierenden kognitiven Zustände der Anfragesteller im Rahmen der der Systementwicklung ist sicherlich keine triviale Aufgabe. Wie dabei das Problem der Einbeziehung des zentralen Aspektes der Bedeutung gelöst werden kann, sei dahingestellt. - Im achten Kapitel wird der Versuch unternommen, die zuvor diskutierten Punkte in ein IS&R-Forschungsprogramm (Prozesse - Verhalten - Systemfunktionalität - Performanz) umzusetzen, wobei auch einige kritische Anmerkungen zur bisherigen Forschungspraxis getroffen werden. - Das abschliessende neunte Kapitel fasst das Buch kurz zusammen und kann somit auch als Einstieg in dieThematik gelesen werden. Darauffolgen noch ein sehr nützliches Glossar zu allen wichtigen Begriffen, die in dem Buch Verwendung finden, eine Bibliographie und ein Sachregister. Ingwersen und Järvelin haben hier ein sehr anspruchsvolles und dennoch lesbares Buch vorgelegt. Die gebotenen Übersichtskapitel und Diskussionen sind zwar keine Einführung in die Informationswissenschaft, decken aber einen grossen Teil der heute in dieser Disziplin aktuellen und durch laufende Forschungsaktivitäten und Publikationen berührten Teilbereiche ab. Man könnte es auch - vielleicht ein wenig überspitzt - so formulieren: Was hier thematisiert wird, ist eigentlich die moderne Informationswissenschaft. Der Versuch, die beiden Forschungstraditionen zu vereinen, wird diesem Werk sicherlich einen Platz in der Geschichte der Disziplin sichern. Nicht ganz glücklich erscheint der Titel des Buches. "The Turn" soll eine Wende bedeuten, nämlich jene hin zu einer integrierten Sicht von IS und IR. Das geht vermutlich aus dem Untertitel besser hervor, doch dieser erschien den Autoren wohl zu trocken. Schade, denn "The Turn" gibt es z.B. in unserem Verbundkatalog bereits, allerdings mit dem Zusatz "from the Cold War to a new era; the United States and the Soviet Union 1983-1990". Der Verlag, der abgesehen davon ein gediegenes (wenn auch nicht gerade wohlfeiles) Produkt vorgelegt hat, hätte derlei unscharfe Duplizierend besser verhindert. Ungeachtet dessen empfehle ich dieses wichtige Buch ohne Vorbehalt zur Anschaffung; es sollte in keiner grösseren Bibliothek fehlen."

Nach Essential classification liegt nun ihr Thesaurus-Lehrbuch vor, mit rund 200 Seiten Text und knapp 100 Seiten Anhang ein handliches Werk, das seine Genese zum Grossteil dem Lehrbetrieb verdankt, wie auch dem kurzen Einleitungskapitel zu entnehmen ist. Das Buch ist der Schule von Jean Aitchison et al. verpflichtet und wendet sich an "the indexer" im weitesten Sinn, d.h. an alle Personen, die ein strukturiertes, kontrolliertes Fachvokabular für die Zwecke der sachlichen Erschliessung und Suche erstellen wollen bzw. müssen. Es möchte dieser Zielgruppe das nötige methodische Rüstzeug für eine solche Aufgabe vermitteln, was einschliesslich der Einleitung und der Schlussbemerkungen in zwanzig Kapiteln geschieht - eine ansprechende Strukturierung, die ein wohldosiertes Durcharbeiten möglich macht. Zu letzterem tragen auch die von der Autorin immer wieder gestellten Übungsaufgaben bei (Lösungen jeweils am Kapitelende). Zu Beginn der Darstellung wird der "information retrieval thesaurus" von dem (zumindest im angelsächsischen Raum) weit öfter mit dem Thesaurusbegriff assoziierten "reference thesaurus" abgegrenzt, einem nach begrifflicher Ähnlichkeit angeordneten Synonymenwörterbuch, das gerne als Mittel zur stilistischen Verbesserung beim Abfassen von (wissenschaftlichen) Arbeiten verwendet wird. Ohne noch ins Detail zu gehen, werden optische Erscheinungsform und Anwendungsgebiete von Thesauren vorgestellt, der Thesaurus als postkoordinierte Indexierungssprache erläutert und seine Nähe zu facettierten Klassifikationssystemen erwähnt. In der Folge stellt Broughton die systematisch organisierten Systeme (Klassifikation/ Taxonomie, Begriffs-/Themendiagramme, Ontologien) den alphabetisch angeordneten, wortbasierten (Schlagwortlisten, thesaurusartige Schlagwortsysteme und Thesauren im eigentlichen Sinn) gegenüber, was dem Leser weitere Einordnungshilfen schafft. Die Anwendungsmöglichkeiten von Thesauren als Mittel der Erschliessung (auch als Quelle für Metadatenangaben bei elektronischen bzw. Web-Dokumenten) und der Recherche (Suchformulierung, Anfrageerweiterung, Browsing und Navigieren) kommen ebenso zur Sprache wie die bei der Verwendung natürlichsprachiger Indexierungssysteme auftretenden Probleme. Mit Beispielen wird ausdrücklich auf die mehr oder weniger starke fachliche Spezialisierung der meisten dieser Vokabularien hingewiesen, wobei auch Informationsquellen über Thesauren (z.B. www.taxonomywarehouse.com) sowie Thesauren für nicht-textuelle Ressourcen kurz angerissen werden.
In den stärker ins Detail gehenden Kapiteln weist Broughton zunächst auf die Bedeutung des systematischen Teils eines Thesaurus neben dem alphabetischen Teil hin und erläutert dann die Elemente des letzteren, wobei neben den gängigen Thesaurusrelationen auch die Option der Ausstattung der Einträge mit Notationen eines Klassifikationssystems erwähnt wird. Die Thesaurusrelationen selbst werden später noch in einem weiteren Kapitel ausführlicher diskutiert, wobei etwa auch die polyhierarchische Beziehung thematisiert wird. Zwei Kapitel zur Vokabularkontrolle führen in Aspekte wie Behandlung von Synonymen, Vermeidung von Mehrdeutigkeit, Wahl der bevorzugten Terme sowie die Formen von Thesauruseinträgen ein (grammatische Form, Schreibweise, Zeichenvorrat, Singular/Plural, Komposita bzw. deren Zerlegung usw.). Insgesamt acht Kapitel - in der Abfolge mit den bisher erwähnten Abschnitten didaktisch geschickt vermischt - stehen unter dem Motto "Building a thesaurus". Kurz zusammengefasst, geht es dabei um folgende Tätigkeiten und Prozesse: - Sammlung des Vokabulars unter Nutzung entsprechender Quellen; - Termextraktion aus den Titeln von Dokumenten und Probleme hiebei; - Analyse des Vokabulars (Facettenmethode); - Einbau einer internen Struktur (Facetten und Sub-Facetten, Anordnung der Terme); - Erstellung einer hierarchischen Struktur und deren Repräsentation; - Zusammengesetzte Themen bzw. Begriffe (Facettenanordnung: filing order vs. citation order); - Konvertierung der taxonomischen Anordnung in ein alphabetisches Format (Auswahl der Vorzugsbegriffe, Identifizieren hierarchischer Beziehungen, verwandter Begriffe usw.); - Erzeugen der endgültigen Thesaurus-Einträge.
Diese Abschnitte sind verständlich geschrieben und trotz der mitunter gar nicht so einfachen Thematik auch für Einsteiger geeignet. Vorteilhaft ist sicherlich, dass die Autorin die Thesauruserstellung konsequent anhand eines einzelnen thematischen Beispiels demonstriert und dafür das Gebiet "animal welfare" gewählt hat, wohl nicht zuletzt auch deshalb, da die hier auftretenden Facetten und Beziehungen ohne allzu tiefgreifende fachwissenschaftliche Kenntnisse für die meisten Leser nachvollziehbar sind. Das methodische Gerüst der Facettenanalyse wird hier deutlich stärker betont als etwa in der (spärlichen) deutschsprachigen Thesaurusliteratur. Diese Vorgangsweise soll neben der Ordnungsbildung auch dazu verhelfen, die Zahl der Deskriptoren überschaubar zu halten und weniger auf komplexe (präkombinierte) Deskriptoren als auf postkoordinierte Indexierung zu setzen. Dafür wird im übrigen das als Verfeinerung der bekannten Ranganathanschen PMEST-Formel geltende Schema der 13 "fundamental categories" der UK Classification Research Group (CRG) vorgeschlagen bzw. in dem Beispiel verwendet (Thing / Kind / Part / Property; Material / Process / Operation; Patient / Product / By-product / Agent; Space; Time). Als "minor criticism" sei erwähnt, dass Broughton in ihrem Demonstrationsbeispiel als Notation für die erarbeitete Ordnung eine m.E. schwer lesbare Buchstabenfolge verwendet, obwohl sie zugesteht (S. 165), dass ein Zifferncode vielfach als einfacher handhabbar empfunden wird.
In einem abschliessenden Kapitel geht das Buch auf Thesauruspflege und -verwaltung ein, wobei auch das Thema "Thesaurussoftware" angerissen wird - letzteres vielleicht ein wenig zu kurz. Erst hier mag manchem unbefangenen Leser bewusst werden, dass die in den vorhergehenden Kapiteln dargestellte Methodik eigentlich ohne den Einsatz dezidierter Software besprochen wurde, ja vielleicht auch so besprochen werden musste, um ein entsprechendes Verständnis herzustellen. In der nachfolgenden zweiseitigen Conclusio wird erwähnt, dass die britische Norm Structured Vocabularies for Information Retrieval (BS 8723) vor einer Neufassung stehe - was den Rezensenten darauf hinzuweisen gemahnt, dass sich dieses Buch natürlich ausschliesslich auf den anglo-amerikanischen Sprachraum und die dort geltenden Thesaurus-Gepflogenheiten bezieht. Der relativ umfangreiche Anhang beinhaltet ausser Materialie zum erwähnten Demonstrationsbeispiel auch ein nützliches Glossarium sowie ein professionell gefertigtes Sachregister. Literaturhinweise werden - in sparsamer Dosierung - jeweils am Ende der einzelnen Kapitel gegeben, sodass sich die "Bibliography" am Ende des Buches auf einige Normen und zwei Standardwerke beschränken kann. Realistisch betrachtet, darf vermutlich nicht davon ausgegangen werden, dass Leser, die dieses Buch durchgearbeitet haben, sogleich in der Lage sein werden, eigenständig einen Thesaurus zu erstellen. Ein Lehrbuch allein kann weder einen Kurs noch die praktische Erfahrung ersetzen, die für eine solche Tätigkeit vonnöten sind. Ich kann mir aber gut vorstellen, dass die Kenntnis der in diesem Buch vermittelten Inhalte sehr wohl in die Lage versetzt, in einem Team, das einen Thesaurus erstellen soll, kompetent mitzuarbeiten, mit den Konzepten und Fachtermini zurechtzukommen und selbst konstruktive Beiträge zu leisten. Ausserdem erscheint mir das Werk hervorragend als Begleitmaterial zu einer Lehrveranstaltung geeignet - oder auch als Grundlage für die Planung einer solchen. Ein britischer Einführungstext eben, im besten Sinne."

- Abstract
- Mit der Entwicklung von Wissen und weltweiter Kommunikation kommt der Wissensorganisation zunehmend eine Schlüsselrolle zu. Einerseits geht es darum, zu verstehen, was Wissen ist und wie es strukturiert ist, andererseits möchte man die Technik der elektronischen Darstellung und Wiederauffindung des Wissens über den gegenwärtigen Stand hinaus weiterentwickeln. Dabei geht es um vielfältige Anwendungen, z. B. Wissensvertextung, Forschungsunterstützung, Bereitstellung von Wissen in Arbeits- und Entscheidungsprozessen, Weiterbildung, Ordnung, Wissenverknüpfung, Innovationsförderung und anderes. Schwerpunkt der Fachtagung Wissensorganisation 2002 sollte darum unter dem Motto "Wissensorganisation in kooperativen Lern- und Arbeitsumgebungen", in Weiterführung ähnlicher Themen von den beiden vorhergehenden Tagungen, Methoden der Wissensorganisation und den Nutzen ihrer Anwendung im Rahmen von eLearning-Aktivitäten beleuchten sowie andererseits eLearning-Methoden für die Wissensorganisation aufgreifen. Didaktische Modelle wie etwa die Lernontologien stehen dabei ebenso zur Debatte wie Anwendungen von Werkzeugen der Wissensmodellierung oder der begrifflichen Wissensstrukturierung. Ziel soll es sein, den Beitrag der Wissensorganisation zur Entwicklung von Arbeitstechniken und neuer Lernkulturen herauszuarbeiten und gleichzeitig auch didaktische Konzepte für die Wissensorganisation fruchtbar zu machen. Folgende Thematiken können die Ausrichtung dieses Vorhabens beispielhaft skizzieren: - Terminologische Kontrolle in Online-Lernumgebungen - Wie zu organisieren ist (zu Verfahren der Wissensanordnung) - Grundlagen für die Gestaltung von Wissensorganisations- und Lernsystem - Der Benutzer als Lerner - der Lerner als Benutzer - Lehrer als Autoren (der Blick auf den Wissensproduzenten) Die Thematisierung praktischer Arbeitsfelder und Werkzeuge, z. B. die Metadatenorganisation mit XML, werden ergänzt durch vertiefende Reflexion über Wissen. Damit sollen Anregungen zur Konzeption neuer Wissenssysteme zusammengetragen werden. Hier stellen sich Fragen nach der Zerlegbarkeit des Wissens, der Bestimmung der Wissenseinheiten, der Sprachinvarianz des Wissens, der Wissensformalisierung, der punktgenauen Wissensbereitstellung zu spezifischen Problemen usw. Auch zu der Aufgabe, die Gesamtheit und Ganzheit des Wissens zu gewährleisten, werden Antworten gesucht. Der vorliegende Band enthält 20 Beiträge, inklusive drei ausgearbeiteten Versionen von Vorträgen, die zwar auf der 7. Deutschen ISKO Tagung 2001 in Berlin gehalten wurden, aber sich in das hier vorgehaltene Spektrum gut einpassen (von Maik Adomßent zu Lernenden Verwaltungen, von Alfred Gerstenkorn zu Verstehensmanagement und von Christina Rautenstrauch zu Tele-Tutoring). Weiter ist ein Beitrag von Thomas Sporer hinzugefügt worden, der die während der Tagung durchgeführte Video-Dokumentation beleuchtet, sowie ein Beitrag von Peter Ohly zu Semantischen Karten, der im Programm der vorherigen Tagung ausgewiesen war, aber wegen Programmänderungen erst 2002 in Regensburg vorgetragen wurde. Der Vortrag von Norbert Meder zu Metadaten für Lernende Verwaltungen wird 2004 in der Festschrift für Klaus Peter Treumann (Uni Bielefeld) veröffentlicht werden und der Beitrag von Christian Swertz zu Kooperativer Autorenschaft ist zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt zur Veröffentlichung vorgesehen.

It is described as "one of the most potent icons in science [.] One sees periodic tables everywhere: in industrial labs, workshops, academic labs, and of course, lecture halls" (p. xiii). Among all taxonomies in all domains, there is probably none more respected and more useful than this one. As Scerri states (p. 25): The periodic table ranks as one of the most fruitful and unifying ideas in the whole of modern science, comparable perhaps with Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Unlike such theories as Newtonian mechanics, the periodic table has not been falsified by developments in modern physics but has evolved while remaining essentially unchanged. After evolving for nearly 150 years through the work of numerous individuals, the periodic table remains at the heart of chemistry. This is mainly because it is of immense practical benefit for making predictions about all manner of chemical and physical properties of the elements and possibilities for bond formation. The periodic system provides the basic criteria for organizing knowledge about all the material stuff in the entire universe. It is thus a model that anybody with interests in knowledge organization (KO) should know. Knowledge about the history, philosophy and status of the periodic system also provides important insight for knowledge organization in general. . . . Scerri's book demonstrates how one of the most important classification systems has evolved and what kinds of conceptualizations and classification criteria are at work in it. It is probably the best book about the best classification system ever constructed. It should belong to any library supporting teaching and research in knowledge organization."

- Abstract
- Das 13. Internationale Symposium für Informationswissenschaft (ISI 2013) führt die alle zwei Jahre stattfindende Tagung des Hochschulverbandes für Informationswissenschaft (HI) fort. Sie stellt stets ein Schaufenster auf die aktuelle Diskussion der Informationswissenschaft als Fachdisziplin zwischen Informatik, Interface Design, Computerlinguistik und benachbarten Sozialwissenschaften dar. Die eingereichten Beiträge stammen vorwiegend von (fast) allen Lehrstühlen und Instituten der Informationswissenschaft in den deutschsprachigen Ländern. In Kooperation mit dem amerikanischen Schwesterverband, der "Association of Information Science and Technology" (ASIS&T), gelang es wieder, neben den herausragenden Keynotes auch weitere internationale Beiträge zu integrieren und auf diese Weise die europäisch-deutschsprachige Informationswissenschaft mit dem internationalen Diskurs zu verbinden. Das Motto der Tagung verweist auf die aktuellen Veränderungen in der Fachdisziplin und in den vorherrschenden Anwendungsfeldern. Wie in vielen Wissenschaften vollzieht sich auch in der Informationswissenschaft ein vielfältiger Paradigmenwechsel, der auf den Wandel zur "digitalen Gesellschaft" reagiert. Neben klassischen Themengebieten wie Information Retrieval, Metadaten, Usability, Portalen, neuen Medientechnologien oder Bibliometrie rücken deshalb Fragen des Informationsverhaltens und der tatsächlichen "Informationspraxis" immer mehr in den Fokus.
