    Abstract
    Enzyklopädien half, war das eher ein Privileg der Wohlhabenderen oder doch jener, deren Ausgabenstruktur schief zum Durchschnitt der Bevölkerung stand. Erst die veritablen Taschenbuch-Ausgaben, dann eine Flut von CD-ROMs ließen die Kosten für das Wissen der Welt auf Beträge schrumpfen, wie sie für ein paar Kinobesuche mit leichter Hand ausgegeben werden. An Seriosität. und Umfang übertrifft die englischsprachige Encyclopxdia Britannica 2001 mit ihren 44 Millionen Wörtern alle anderen Silberschinken um Längen. Zudem ist sie mit etwa 50 British Pounds eine der preiswerten (http://britannicashop.britannica.co.uk/) und nur dann nicht erste Wahl, wenn die Quisqilien deutscher Innenpolitik im Mittelpunkt stehen sollen. Aber Englisch ist nicht everybodys darling, so daß IM deutschsprachigen Raum fast nur die Wahl zwischen dem Brockhaus Multimedia 2001 und der Enearta 2001 von Microsoft bleibt. Der Brockhaus hatte sich nach einigen Fehlzündungen mit seiner neuesten Ausgabe an die Spitze gesetzt (siehe F.A.Z. vom 26. September), was wiederum neugierig auf die neue Encarta macht. Deren Basis-Version auf einer CDROM kostet 109 Mark; die mit Multimedia Elementen üppiger ausgestatteten drei Silberlinge in einer Box liegen als Plus-Version bei 180 Mark, und gekrönt werden sie von der fünf Scheiben umfassenden Professional-Edition für 250 Mark, die um den weltbesten Atlas erweitert ist, der sich für Geld kaufen läßt. Die beiden letzten Ausgaben liegen zusätzlich auf DVD vor, was den lästigen Wechsel zwischen Text- und Multimedia-Scheiben vermeidet. Alles das ist im Buchhandel erhältlich. Die Encarta folgt der englischen Lexikon-Tradition und bietet statt knapper Erläuterungen von Stichwörtern zumeist in Alltagssprache formulierte Artikel. Wir haben uns die Plus-Version angesehen, die gegenüber ihrem Vorgänger 3000 neue Einträge enthält, während 4500 Artikel aktualisiert wurden. In den Zeiten weitläufiger Festplatten kann ihr gesamter Inhalt für noch schnelleren Zugriff auf diese transferiert werden.
