    Abstract
    Das Kompetenzzentrum Interoperable Metadaten (KIM) ist eine Informations- und Kommunikationsplattform für Metadatenanwender und -entwickler zur Verbesserung der Interoperabilität von Metadaten im deutschsprachigen Raum. KIM unterstützt und fördert die Erarbeitung von Metadatenstandards, die interoperable Gestaltung von Formaten und damit die optimale Nutzung von Metadaten in digitalen Informationsumgebungen mittels Lehrmaterialien, Schulungen und Beratungen. Das Kompetenzzentrum entsteht im Rahmen des von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) geförderten Projekts KIM unter der Federführung der Niedersächsischen Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen (SUB) in Zusammenarbeit mit der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek (DNB). Projektpartner sind in der Schweiz die Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft HTW Chur, die Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) Zürich und in Österreich die Universität Wien. Aufgabe des Kompetenzzentrums ist es, die Interoperabilität von Metadaten zu verbessern. Interoperabilität ist die Fähigkeit zur Zusammenarbeit von heterogenen Systemen. Datenbestände unabhängiger Systeme können ausgetauscht oder zusammengeführt werden, um z. B. eine systemübergreifende Suche oder das Browsen zu ermöglichen. Daten werden zum Teil in sehr unterschiedlichen Datenbanksystemen gespeichert. Interoperabilität entsteht dann, wenn die Systeme umfangreiche Schnittstellen implementieren, die ein weitgehend verlustfreies Mapping der internen Datenrepräsentation ermöglichen.

    Abstract
    META-LIB ist ein gemeinsames Projekt der Niedersächsischen Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen, Der Deutschen Bibliothek, der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek und des Deutschen Bibliotheksinstituts. Es wird im Rahmen des Förderbereichs 'Verteilte digitale Forschungsbibliothek', Einzelprogramm 'Modernisierung und Rationalisierung in wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken' von der DFG gefördert. META-LIB hat zum Ziel, Richtlinien für den Einsatz von Metadaten, insbesondere des Dublin-Core-Sets, zur Erschließung digitaler und digitalisierter Ressourcen in wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken zu entwickeln. Vorgestellt wird das Teilprojekt Der Deutschen Bibliothek, welches zur Aufgabe die 'Entwicklung von Konventionen für die (national)bibliographische Erschließung digitaler Publikationen' hat

    "1. Die Konferenz Vom 12. bis 15. September 2005 fand in Leganés (Madrid) die "International Conference an Dublin Core and Metadata Applications" mit dem Thema "Vocabularies in Practice" statt [DC2005]. Gastgeber war der Fachbereich Bibliothekswesen und Dokumentation der "Universidad Carlos III de Madrid" zusammen mit dem Institut "Agustin Millares" für Dokumentation und Wissensmanagement. Den 214 Teilnehmern aus 33 Ländern wurden 14 ausführliche und 18 Kurzpräsentationen geboten sowie zehn "Special Sessions" [DC2005-PAPERS]. Fünf Einführungsseminare zu Themen der Metadaten und maschinell verarbeitbarer Thesauri wurden abgehalten. Die Hauptreden der vier Konferenztage wurden von Thomas Baker (Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen), Ricardo Baeza (University of Chile), Johannes Keizer (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) und Eric Miller (World Wide Web Consortium) gehalten. Plenarvorträge wurden simultan ins Spanische übersetzt und mehrere Treffen wurden in französischer oder spanischer Sprache abgehalten. Die Dublin-Core-Konferenz ist auch das zentrale Ereignis des Jahres für die Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) als Organisation. Vor und nach der Konferenz tagten das DCMI Board of Trustees, ein Gremium aus Metadatenexperten und nationalen Vertretern ("Affiliates"); das "Usage Board", das den Standard inhaltlich verwaltet, und das "Advisory Board", das hauptsächlich aus Leitern von DCMI-Arbeitsgruppen besteht. Während der Konferenz haben sich vierzehn Arbeitsgruppen zu speziellen Fragen im Bereich Metadaten getroffen. 2. Von der Kernsemantik zum Modell "Zehn Jahre Dublin Core" war der Hintergrund für die Keynote-Präsehtation von Thomas Baker, DCMI Director of Specifications and Documentation. März 1995 fand in Dublin (Ohio) der Workshop statt, auf dem die Kernelemente erstmals entworfen wurden - Creator, Subject, Date, usw. - die der Initiative den Namen gegeben haben. Dieser "Dublin Core" wurde 1998 bei der Internet Engineering Task Force als Request for Comments (RFC 2413) publiziert, 2000 formal als Standard in Europa (CWA 13874/2000 bei CEN), 2001 in den USA (Z39.95 bei NISO) und 2003 international (ISO 15836/2003) anerkannt [DUBLINCORE]. Am Anfang wurde der Dublin Core als Datenformat konzipiert - d.h. als streng festgelegte Vorlage für digitale Karteikarten. Bereits früh wurden die Elemente jedoch als Vokabular aufgefasst, d.h. als Satz prinzipiell rekombinierbarer Elemente für Beschreibungen, die den Anforderungen spezifischer Anwendungsbereiche angepasst werden konnten - kurz, als Bausteine für Anwendungsprofile. Ausgehend von der vermeintlich simplen Aufgabe, Webseiten auf einfache Art zu beschreiben, hat sich ab 1997 in gegenseitiger Beeinflussung mit der sich entwickelnden Webtechnik von HTML bis hin zu XML und RDF ein allgemeines Modell für Metadaten herauskristallisiert.
    Im März 2005 hat die DCMI mit der Verabschiedung des so genannten "Abstrakten Modells" einen wichtigen Meilenstein erreicht. Dieses DC-Modell ist die formale Grammatik der Metadatensprache, die sich im Laufe der Jahre entwickelt hat. Es hat eine gemeinsame Wurzel mit dem Modell des Semantic Web beim W3C und teilt dessen Grundstruktur, bleibt jedoch absichtlich einfacher als die voll entwickelten Ontologiesprachen des letzteren. Das abstrakte Modell dient als Maßstab für den systematischen Vergleich verschiedenartiger Implementierungstechniken in Bezug auf deren Ausdrucksfähigkeit. Ein hierarchisch aufgebautes XML-Schema kann beispielsweise Metainformationen differenzierter übertragen als ein HTML-Webdokument mit einem flachen Satz eingebetteter META-Tags. Dagegen kann RDF expliziter als ein XML-Schema die Semantik einer Beschreibung in einen größeren semantischen Zusammenhang verankern und somit die Rekombinierbarkeit der Daten erleichtern. In der Praxis müssen Systementwickler sich für die eine oder andere Implementierungstechnik entscheiden, dabei liefern die Metadaten nur eines von mehreren Kriterien. Das DC-Modell bietet eine Basis für den Vergleich der möglichen Lösungen in Hinblick auf die Unterstützung von Metadaten und dient somit als Vorbereitung für deren spätere Integration. Die Interoperabilität der Metadaten ist aber nicht nur eine Frage einer gemeinsamen Semantik mit einem gemeinsamen Modell. Wie auch bei menschlichen Sprachen wird die Interoperabilität umso vollkommener, je besser die Sprachgebräuche verstanden werden - d.h. die Katalogisierungsregeln, die den Metadaten zugrunde liegen. Die Metadatenregeln, die innerhalb einer Anwendungsgemeinschaft benutzt werden, sind Gegenstand eines so genannten Anwendungsprofils. Viele DCMI-Arbeitsgruppen sehen ihre Hauptaufgabe darin, ein Anwendungsprofil für ein bestimmtes Arbeitsgebiet zu erstellen (siehe Abschnitt 6, unten). Diesem Trend zufolge orientiert sich das DCMI Usage Board zunehmend auf die Überprüfung ganzer Anwendungsprofile auf Übereinstimmung mit dem DCMI-Modell."

    Abstract
    Vielen Bibliotheksbenutzern wird inzwischen mehr und mehr bewußt: Alle Vernetzungsbestrebungen in Bibliotheksbereich, die lokale Traditionen zugunsten eines überregionalen Nachweises der Bestände aufgeben, handeln auch gegen die Benutzerinteressen. Wir werden uns zunehmend klar darüber, daß von den meisten wissenschaftlern der lokale Online-Katalog allein für Literaturrecherchen herangezogen wird, und zwar aus dem Grund, daß das gesuchte Buch so schnell und unkompliziert wie möglich zur Hand sein soll. Diese Feststellung impliziert auch den Gedanken, daß die Aufgabe guter lokaler Katalogisierungstraditionen möglicherweise ein unwiederbringlicher Verlust ist, ein Schritt hin zu einer schlechteren und oberflächlicheren Information. Wie sich eine überregionale Verbesserung der Nachweissituation unter gleichzeitiger Bewahrung lokaler Traditionen darstellen kann, ist Gegenstand der folgenden Ausführungen. Sie bahandeln das Thema aus dem Blickwinkel der Bilbiotheken, Archive und Museen, deren aufgabe im Nachweis und der Bewahrung von Unikaten besteht. die hier behandelte Metadatendiskussion bezieht sich also auf die Beschreibungskriterien nicht für digitales Material, sondern für Manuskripte, Briefe, Gegenstände

    Abstract
    Der folgende Artikel beschäftigt sich mit den Anforderungen und Aufgaben eines Systems zur vernetzten Datenverwaltung, welches zeitbezogene Verknüpfungen zwischen audiovisuellen Inhalten und Metadaten ermöglicht. Anhand der zusammenhängenden Relationen kann ein audiovisuelles Medium nicht nur als Ganzes effektiv beschrieben und erfasst werden, sondern auch dessen Fragmente und Kontexte. Auf Basis dieser Datenverarbeitung lassen sich vielfältige Schnittstellen und Anwendungen zur kontextbasierten Erschließung, Bearbeitung und Auslieferung von Dokumenten und Medien abbilden, welche insbesondere für Mediatheken und Systeme des Media-Asset-Managements im medialen Umfeld einen großen zusätzlichen Nutzen aufweisen, aber auch Aufgaben innerhalb wissenschaftlicher Bibliotheken und Archivsystemen erfüllen können.

    Abstract
    Nach einer Erläuterung der Ereignisse und Gründe, die zur Entwicklung der Open Archives Initiative (OAI) geführt haben, wird die Entstehungsgeschichte der OAI sowie ihre Organisationsstruktur dargestellt. Der Input und Diskussionen von Interessierten und Erstanwendern bei mehreren öffentlichen Workshops trugen zur Optimierung der Alpha-Version des Protokolls bei, mit dem Ergebnis, dass die erste offizielle Version im Januar 2001 vorgestellt wurde. Darauf hin folgten zwei Workshops in den USA und Europa zur Darlegung des Protokolls und Vorstellung exemplarischer Implementierung des Protokolls. Das OAI Metadata Harvesting Protokoll wird in seiner Zielsetzung und Möglichkeiten detailliert dargestellt. Auch die vom Protokoll erforderlichen Metadaten werden erläutert. Die Basisbefehle zur Abfrage in verschiedenen OAI-kompatiblen Repositories, auch mit Unterscheidung zwischen besonderen Sammlungen innerhalb der Repositories werden erklärt. Zum Schluß werden die Aussichten für die OAI im Rahmen der Experimentierphase der 1. Version des Protokolls sowie im Rahmen der gegenwärtigen Entwicklungen im wissenschaftlichen Publikationswesen diskutiert.

    Abstract
    Der 70. Band der BIPRA-Reihe beschäftigt sich mit der Qualität in der Inhaltserschließung im Kontext etablierter Verfahren und technologischer Innovationen. Treffen heterogene Erzeugnisse unterschiedlicher Methoden und Systeme aufeinander, müssen minimale Anforderungen an die Qualität der Inhaltserschließung festgelegt werden. Die Qualitätsfrage wird zurzeit in verschiedenen Zusammenhängen intensiv diskutiert und im vorliegenden Band aufgegriffen.     Abstract
    Neue Entwicklungen im Bibliothekswesen und in der Technologie führen zu neuen ufgaben, die spezialisierte Fachkräfte erfordern. Die ETH-Bibliothek reagierte darauf, indem sie das Pilotprojekt "Metadatenmanagement" startete, welches sich mit Datenanalysen, -einspielungen und -mutationen, Datenmappings, der Erstellung eines Datenflussdiagramms, sowie mit der Einführung von RDA und GND beschäftigte. Nach zwei Jahren zeigte sich, dass zahlreiche Aufgabengebiete existieren, welche von Metadatenspezialisten, als Schnittstelle zwischen den Fachabteilungen und der IT, übernommen werden können. Dieser Bericht fasst die getätigten Arbeiten, Erfahrungen und Erkenntnisse der zweijährigen Pilotphase zusammen.

    Abstract
    ONIX (das Akronym steht für Online information exchange) ist der erste weltweit akzeptierte Standard für angereicherte Metadaten über Bücher, Fortsetzungswerke und andere Produkte des Buchhandels. Er wurde ursprünglich in den USA entwickelt, zunächst mit dem Ziel, dem Internetbuchhandel in einem einheitlichen Format Katalogdaten und zusätzlich Marketingmaterial zur Verfügung stellen zu können. Von Anfang an waren Barsortimente, bibliographische Agenturen und Verlage in den USA und bald auch aus dem Vereinigten Königreich an der Entwicklung von ONIX beteiligt und haben diese finanziell sowie personell gefördert. Die Pflege und Weiterentwicklung dieses neuen Standards wurde dann in die Hände von EDItEUR gelegt, der internationalen Dachorganisation für Standardisierung im Buchhandel, gegründet und gefördert von Verbänden aus Buchhandel, Verlagen und Bibliothekswesen, darunter dem Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels und der European Booksellers Federation. Büro und Sekretariat von EDItEUR werden in London von Book Industry Communication (BIC), einer Gemeinschaftsorganisation der britischen Verleger- und Buchhändlerverbände, gestellt. EDIMUR wurde vor zehn Jahren gegründet, um EDIStandards (EDI = electronic data interchange, elektronischer Datenaustausch) für die Kommunikation zwischen Buchhandel und Verlagen einerseits und Bibliotheken und ihren Lieferanten andererseits zu entwickeln. Dafür wurden Richtlinien für eine Reihe von EANCOM-Nachrichten verabschiedet, darunter für Bestellungen, Auftragsbestätigungen, Rechnungen und Angebote. Ein Richtlinienentwurf für die Nachricht PRICAT (Price and sales catalogue), die für die Übermittlung von Katalogdaten bestimmt ist, wurde zwar vor einigen Jahren entwickelt, aber bisher noch nirgendwo in der Praxis getestet oder gar produktiv eingesetzt. Hingegen sind die transaktionsbezogenen EDI-Nachrichten sowohl im Bibliothekswesen als auch im Buchhandel in Europa vielfach im Einsatz.

    Abstract
    Die seit Mitte der goer Jahre des letzten Jahrhunderts durch das Internet und vor allem durch das World Wide Web (WWW) entstandenen neuen Kommunikations- und Publikationsmöglichkeiten stellen die mit der Sammlung, Erschließung und Nutzbarmachung von Veröffentlichungen beauftragten wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken vor neue Herausforderungen. Netzpublikationen erfordern die Überprüfung und Anpassung bestehender Methoden und Geschäftsgänge. Neben den bibliothekarischen Verfahren haben sich im WWW neue Vorgehensweisen herausgebildet. Um die Suche, die Identifikation und den Zugriff auf Netzpublikationen zu unterstützen, werden strukturierte Daten beigegeben: Metadaten. Außer den zum Auffinden der Ressourcen notwendigen Metadaten spielen weitere Arten von Metadaten für Netzpublikationen eine zunehmend wichtige Rolle.

    Abstract
    August 1999 wurde eine Arbeitsgruppe für bildungsbezogene Metadaten im Rahmen der Dublin Core Metadaten-Initiative unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Stuart Sutton (Gateway for Educational Materials, GEM, und School of Libraray and Information Science der University of Washington, USA und Dr. Jon Mason, Direktor des Education Network Australia, EdNA, Australien) konstituiert. Innerhalb einer Woche nach der Presseankündigung hatten sich weltweit über 70 Teilnehmer für die Arbeitsgruppe gemeldet. Ziele dieser Arbeitsgruppe sind: ... die Eingrenzungen und Erweiterungen zum Dublin Core Metadatensatz zu entwickeln, der Bildungsinformationen zum Zwecke einer besseren Quellensuche beschreibt. Es ist zu erwarten, daß die daraus resultierenden Metadaten sowohl bildungsbezogene Qualifier innerhalb des Rahmens der bestehenden Dublin Core Elemente beinhalten als auch potentiell einige, die für den Bibldungsbereich spezifisch sind

    Die meisten Intranets stehen vor einem Informationsinfarkt - es fehlt in den Organisationen vielfach an klaren Rollenkonzepten zur Eingabe, Pflege und Weiterentwicklung der Intranets, vor allem aber auch an methodischen Grundsätzen zur Erfassung und Erschließung der verschiedenartigen Informationen.     Abstract
    Die Sonderfördermaßnahme CARMEN (Content Analysis, Retrieval and Metadata: Effective Networking) zielt im Rahmen des vom BMB+F geförderten Programms GLOBAL INFO darauf ab, in der heutigen dezentralen Informationsweit geeignete Informationssysteme für die verteilten Datenbestände in Bibliotheken, Fachinformationszentren und im Internet zu schaffen. Diese Zusammenführung ist weniger technisch als inhaltlich und konzeptuell problematisch. Heterogenität tritt beispielsweise auf, wenn unterschiedliche Datenbestände zur Inhaltserschließung verschiedene Thesauri oder Klassifikationen benutzen, wenn Metadaten unterschiedlich oder überhaupt nicht erfasst werden oder wenn intellektuell aufgearbeitete Quellen mit in der Regel vollständig unerschlossenen Internetdokumenten zusammentreffen. Im Projekt CARMEN wird dieses Problem mit mehreren Methoden angegangen: Über deduktiv-heuristische Verfahren werden Metadaten automatisch aus Dokumenten generiert, außerdem lassen sich mit statistisch-quantitativen Methoden die unterschiedlichen Verwendungen von Termen in den verschiedenen Beständen aufeinander abbilden, und intellektuell erstellte Crosskonkordanzen schaffen sichere Übergänge von einer Dokumentationssprache in eine andere. Für die Extraktion von Metadaten gemäß Dublin Core (v. a. Autor, Titel, Institution, Abstract, Schlagworte) werden anhand typischer Dokumente (Dissertationen aus Math-Net im PostScript-Format und verschiedenste HTML-Dateien von WWW-Servern deutscher sozialwissenschaftlicher Institutionen) Heuristiken entwickelt. Die jeweilige Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass die so gewonnenen Metadaten korrekt und vertrauenswürdig sind, wird über Gewichte den einzelnen Daten zugeordnet. Die Heuristiken werden iterativ in ein Extraktionswerkzeug implementiert, getestet und verbessert, um die Zuverlässigkeit der Verfahren zu erhöhen. Derzeit werden an der Universität Osnabrück und im InformationsZentrum Sozialwissenschaften Bonn anhand mathematischer und sozialwissenschaftlicher Datenbestände erste Prototypen derartiger Transfermodule erstellt

    Abstract
    Bibliografische Daten, Normdaten und Metadaten im Semantic Web - Konzepte der Bibliografischen Kontrolle im Wandel. Der Titel dieser Arbeit zielt in ein essentielles Feld der Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft, die Bibliografische Kontrolle. Als zweites zentrales Konzept wird der in der Weiterentwicklung des World Wide Webs (WWW) bedeutsame Begriff des Semantic Webs genannt. Auf den ersten Blick handelt es sich hier um einen ungleichen Wettstreit. Auf der einen Seite die Bibliografische Kontrolle, welche die Methoden und Mittel zur Erschließung von bibliothekarischen Objekten umfasst und traditionell in Form von formal-inhaltlichen Surrogaten in Katalogen daherkommt. Auf der anderen Seite das Buzzword Semantic Web mit seinen hochtrabenden Konnotationen eines durch Selbstreferenzialität "bedeutungstragenden", wenn nicht sogar "intelligenten" Webs. Wie kamen also eine wissenschaftliche Bibliothekarin und ein Mitglied des World Wide Web Consortiums 2007 dazu, gemeinsam einen Aufsatz zu publizieren und darin zu behaupten, das semantische Netz würde ein "bibliothekarischeres" Netz sein? Um sich dieser Frage zu nähern, soll zunächst kurz die historische Entwicklung der beiden Informationssphären Bibliothek und WWW gemeinsam betrachtet werden. Denn so oft - und völlig zurecht - die informationelle Revolution durch das Internet beschworen wird, so taucht auch immer wieder das Analogon einer weltweiten, virtuellen Bibliothek auf. Genauer gesagt, nahmen die theoretischen Überlegungen, die später zur Entwicklung des Internets führen sollten, ihren Ausgangspunkt (neben Kybernetik und entstehender Computertechnik) beim Konzept des Informationsspeichers Bibliothek.
