    Abstract

    Abstract

    Abstract
Visual documents - motion sequences on film, videotape, and digital recordings - constitute a major source of information for the Space Agency, as well as other government and private sector entities. This article describes a method for automatically selecting key frames from visual documents. These frames may in turn be used to represent the total image sequence of visual documents in visual libraries, hypermedia systems, and training guides. The performance of the abstracting algorithm reduces 51 minutes of video sequnces to 134 frames; a reduction of information in the range of 700:1

    Abstract
Describes Stumpers, an electronic listserv, or mailing list, on the Internet devoted to finding the answers to difficult reference questions. Begun in 1992, it now has over 700 subscribers. When a question is sent via e mail to Stumpers, it appears in all subscriber's e mail boxes; replies are likely within a day or two and sometimes arrive within a matter of hours. 50-100 questions and answers are exchanged daily

    Abstract
Reviews the main features of Computer Select: a CD-ROM database from Ziff Communications, Co., New York, which provides the full text of over 60 computer periodicals and is designed to enable users of information on software and suppliers, of the type found in 'PC magazine', but which is difficult to find by browsing printed copies of such periodicals. A librarian's perspective is provided by the critical comments of Kathrin Hoover, corporate librarian of Electronic Data Systems, Texas. Concludes that the annual subscription of $ 700,- is high and there are some desirable feature lacking, but rates Computer Select as unparalleled as a tool for finding information rapidly

    Abstract
In the Netherlands and Belgium some 50 documentation centres on women's affairs have been created in recent years, ranging from small voluntary centres through university departmental collections to regional and national centres. Increased interest in women's affairs resulted in a joint project by the International Informatiecentrum an Archief voor de Vrouwenbeweging and the Anna Maria van Schuurman Centre to create a thesaurus of indexing terminlogy. Work began in 1988 and the final version was published in 1992. The thesaurus contains some 2.200 terms and 700 references and includes a permuterm index of headings. The IIAV in Amsterdam has accepted responsibility for maintaining the thesaurus

    Abstract
Reports results of a pilot study, conducted at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, UK, which examined the use of SGML for the management of computerized patient records. 700 patients had their text patient records encoded in SGML an 14 of these had legacy, laboratory and other data included. Records were incorporated into a commercial SGML database to demonstrate in-context searching. A commercial SGML browser allowed rapid access to clinical events in large record. A study of comparative file sizes between formats was performed and the acceptability of computerized records was assessed with clinicians. Discusses the specifications for the system and the relationship with traditional technologies. Concludes that SGML represents a suitable format for the manipulation and publication of patient records
