- Abstract
- Betrachtet wird der europäische Entwurf der Informationsgesellschaft in der Folge des EG-Weißbuches von 1993 und der Tagung in Korfu (1994). Es zeigt sich die zentrale Rolle des Informationsengineering. Hier geht es um die Produktion, Speicherung, Verteilung und Abfrage von Informationen. Wirtschaftliche Kennziffern beleuchten den deutschen Informationsmarkt (Online-Datenbanken, CD-ROM, Videotex, professionelle Informationsvermittlung). Die Relevanz elektronischer Informationsdienste für die betriebswirtschaftliche Praxis (Branchen- und Konkurrenzanalysen, Benchmarking) wird anhand von konkreten Beispielrecherchen demonstriert. Elektronische Datenbanken gestatten, die wissenschaftliche Forschung im Rahmen der Wissenschaftsevaluation mittels Publikations- Zitations- oder Themenanalysen zu beschreiben und zu bewerten. Ein Kapitel beschreibt detailliert diejenigen Tätigkeiten, die beim Auf- und Ausbau elektronischer Informationsdienste routinemäßig durchgeführt werden, mit dem Ziel, Qualitätsmerkmale für die Informationstätigkeit abzuleiten. Die Komplexität der Informationstätigkeiten führt u.a. in Bereiche der fuzzy logic und der Informationshermeneutik. Abgeschlossen wird das Buch mit einer 'Anatomie' einer konkreten Datenbank. Beispiel ist die ifo Literaturdatenbank, die erfolgreich bei mehreren Hosts als Online-Datenbank sowie zusätzlich als CD-ROM Datenbank vermarktet wird

Tatsächlich kann sich das Informationsmanagement an Hochschulen über einen Mangel an Herausforderungen nicht beklagen: wie die Autorin einleitend darstellt, haben diese nämlich sowohl administrative als auch wissenschaftliche Informationen in sehr großer Menge zu verwalten. Dabei sind die für spezifische Informationen benötigten Datenquellen sowohl im administrativen als auch wissenschaftlichen Bereich oft voneinander isoliert und befinden sich in heterogenen Systemen - unerwünschte Redundanzen und Inkonsistenzen sind die Folge. Verbunden mit der verstärkten Nachfrage nach elektronisch vorliegenden Fachinformationen im Wissenschaftsbetrieb ist ein planmäßiges, strukturiertes und effizientes Umgehen mit Informationen notwendig. Ein Portal kann hier wertvolle Dienste leisten - doch was ist darunter eigentlich genau zu verstehen? Nach einer Auseinandersetzung mit der einschlägigen Literatur gelangt Guba zu folgender Arbeitsdefinition: "Ein Portal ist [...] ein virtueller Ort für die Bereitstellung und Distribution von (über verschiedene Anwendungen verteilte) Daten und Informationen und ermöglicht eine durchgängig IT-gestützte Prozessteuerung übertechnische Systemgrenzen hinweg [...] Ein universitäres Informations- und Kommunikationsportal hat also die Funktion, auf der einen Seite den Universitätsbetrieb und auf der anderen Seite die grundlegenden Bestandteile des Wissenschaftsprozesses, nämlich die Gewinnung, Speicherung, Publikation und Vermittlung von Informationen bzw. Wissen sowie die wissenschaftliche Kommunikation, zu unterstützen". Als weiteres wesentliches Merkmal von Portalen kommt noch die Möglichkeit der Personalisierung der Funktionen hinzu.
Bei der Einteilung von Portalen in verschiedene Typen herrscht in der Literatur eine große Vielfalt an Ansätzen. Ausgehend von der fehlenden Stringenz und Vollständigkeit der verwendeten Typologien wird von Guba eine eigene Klassifikation präsentiert, die die Portale nach ihren jeweils primären Funktionen einteilt: so werden Rechercheportale zur Recherche nach Fachinformationen, lnformations- und Kommunikationsportale zur organisationalen Aufgabenerfüllung (Corporate Portals) bzw. privaten Endnutzung (nicht-transaktionsorientierte Consumer Portals) sowie Geschäftsportale zur Abwicklung von Geschäftsvorgängen als die drei Hauptklassen definiert, in die sich die weiteren Portaltypen einordnen lassen. Auf drei dieser weiteren Portaltypen - Fachinformations-, Bibliotheksund Universitätsportale - geht die Autorin näher ein und bringt auch einige Praxisbeispiele. Erstere stellen Rechercheportale dar, in denen von einem virtuellen Ort aus verteilte, heterogene Datenquellen ohne Medienbrüche durchsucht und genutzt werden können. Im deutschsprachigen Raum sind sie als Virtuelle Fachbibliotheken schon seit einigen Jahren bekannt und verbreitet. Bibliotheksportale, die ebenfalls zu den Rechercheportalen gehören, sind im deutschsprachigen Raum jedoch noch kaum zu finden. Sie zeichnen sich durch personalisierbare Zugänge zum Literatur- und Fachinformationsangebot spezifischer Bibliotheken aus und gehen somit weit über die üblichen Benutzerinnenkontos in Online-Bibliothekskatalogen hinaus. Universitätsportale als spezielle Ausprägung von Informations- und Kommunikationsportalen werden durch drei Fallbeschreibungen ausführlicher präsentiert. Sie sind - zumindest in Deutschland - schon häufiger vorhanden, was wohl nicht zuletzt an der finanziellen Förderung dieses Portaltyps durch die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG liegt. Im praktischen Teil zeigt die Autorin am Beispiel der Donau-Universität Krems, wie mittels einer Analyse des Informationsbedarfes der Zielgruppe Portale hinsichtlich ihres Funktionsumfanges konzipiert werden können. Sie führte hierzu eine Befragung unter Studierenden durch und gewann daraus Erkenntnisse, die nun als Ausgangspunkt herangezogen werden können, um für die Donau-Universität ein Portal für Studierende als primäre Zielgruppe zu realisieren.

- Kaum ein Unternehmen hat in den letzten Jahren eine so rasante Erfolgsgeschichte geschrieben wie Google. Vor rund zehn Jahren als Internet-Suchmaschine mit einer Handvoll Mitarbeiter gestartet, hat sich Google zu einem erfolgreichen Konzern mit über 10.000 Mitarbeitern und Milliarden-Umsätzen entwickelt. Google hat sich dabei fundamental verändert. Google ist mittlerweile mehr als eine Suchmaschine. Google ist ein Nachrichtendienst. Google ist ein Multimedia-Archiv. Google ist ein Bezahlsystem. Google ist ein geographisches Informationssystem. Google ist ein Werbevermarkter. Google ist ein Software-Anbieter. Google ist vielleicht bald auch eine Telefongesellschaft ... und vieles mehr! Google investiert Milliarden in den Ausbau seiner Suchtechnologie und die Expansion seines Werbenetzwerks in die klassischen Werbeträger (TV, Radio oder Print). Google arbeitet an vollkommen neuen Angeboten wie der Verfügbarkeit von Wissen in Form der Digitalisierung gigantischer Bibliotheken. Google stößt in neue Segmente wie den mobile Plattformen, Geoinformation oder Anwendungen zur Bürokommunikation vor und engagiert sich beim Aufbau neuer Kommunikationsnetze oder entwickelt Dienste, die unser (digitales) Leben nachhaltig verändern könnten. - Abstract
- Die IT-Industrie hat die Bildung als Geschäftsfeld seit vielen Jahren auf der Agenda. Wirtschaftsverbände und IT-Vertreter fordern unisono, Digitaltechnik und Programmiersprachen schon in der Grundschule zu unterrichten, damit die Schülerinnen und Schüler für die digitale Zukunft gerüstet seien. Dabei ist der Nutzen digitaler Medien im Unterricht nach wie vor fragwürdig. Ralf Lankau entlarvt in diesem Buch die wirtschaftlichen Interessen der IT-Branche und ihrer Lobbyisten. Dabei geht er sowohl auf die wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen (Kybernetik, Behaviorismus) als auch auf die technischen Rahmenbedingungen von Netzen und Cloud-Computing ein, bevor er konkrete Vorschläge für einen reflektierten und verantwortungsvollen Umgang mit Digitaltechnik im Unterricht skizziert. Die These des Autors lautet: Wir müssen uns auf unsere pädagogische Aufgabe besinnen und (digitale) Medien wieder zu dem machen, was sie im strukturierten Präsenzunterricht sind: didaktische Hilfsmittel.

- Abstract
- In seinem Kultbuch Eine kurze Geschichte der Menschheit erklärte Yuval Noah Harari, wie unsere Spezies die Erde erobern konnte. In "Homo Deus" stößt er vor in eine noch verborgene Welt: die Zukunft. Was wird mit uns und unserem Planeten passieren, wenn die neuen Technologien dem Menschen gottgleiche Fähigkeiten verleihen - schöpferische wie zerstörerische - und das Leben selbst auf eine völlig neue Stufe der Evolution heben? Wie wird es dem Homo Sapiens ergehen, wenn er einen technikverstärkten Homo Deus erschafft, der sich vom heutigen Menschen deutlicher unterscheidet als dieser vom Neandertaler? Was bleibt von uns und der modernen Religion des Humanismus, wenn wir Maschinen konstruieren, die alles besser können als wir? In unserer Gier nach Gesundheit, Glück und Macht könnten wir uns ganz allmählich so weit verändern, bis wir schließlich keine Menschen mehr sind.

- Abstract
- Neue Medien und Multimedia finden augenblicklich große Beachtung in fast allen Bereichen unseres Lebens. Diese Entwicklung basiert in erheblichem Maße auf technologischen und organisatorischen Neuerungen bei der Nutzung digitaler und multimedialer Produkte und Dienstleistungen in allen Sektoren. Dazu gehören neben den Anwendungen in der Wirtschaft gerade die auf die Bildung bezogenen Dienste und Infrastrukturen. Verbunden mit der rapiden Verbreitung der Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien sind Erwartungen hinsichtlich ihrer besonderen Möglichkeiten für den Austausch von Informationen, die Wissensvermittlung und das Lehren und Lernen. Der Sammelband thematisiert aktuelle Entwicklungen auf diesen Ebenen in systematischer Weise und gliedert sich in die drei Kapitel «eLearning», «Multimedia» und «Innovative Applikationen & Mobile Media». Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf der regionalen Bezugnahme zu Brandenburg und Berlin.
