- Der berühmte Physiker Richard P. Feynman sagte einmal: "In einem Glas Wein steckt das ganze Universum". Die ganze Mathematik steckt dagegen, so könnte man nach der Lektüre von Pi, die Story von Jean-Paul Delahaye meinen, in der Zahl Pi. Tatsache: Was den Physikern ihr Doppelspaltexperiment, ist dem Mathematiker die Kreiszahl -- eigentlich sollte sie nur das Verhältnis zwischen Umfang und Durchmesser eines Kreises definieren, aber im Laufe der Jahrhunderte entpuppte sie sich als Störenfried, der Rechengelehrten das Leben gehörig zur Hölle machte. Wie kann eine einfache Zahl Generationen von Mathematikern zur Verzweiflung treiben? Wieso verbrachten Gelehrte Jahrzehnte damit, wenige Nachkommastellen dieser Zahl auszurechnen -- wie zum Beispiel der Mathematiker Rutherford, der sich dummerweise ab der 152. Stelle verrechnete und daher genausogut fünf Jahre seines Lebens auf den Bahamas hätte Urlaub machen können? Wieso verbringen erwachsene Menschen ihre Zeit damit, in engen, mit Computern vollgestopften Zimmern zu hausen, die nicht beheizt, aber trotzdem warm sind von der Abwärme von Computerprozessoren, die auf der Suche nach Regelmäßigkeiten in der Zahl Pi sind? Genau das ist Delahayes Thema, und genau das hebt sein Werk aus der Masse vieler populärwissenschaftlicher Bücher zu ähnlichen Themen heraus: Der Autor macht nicht nur Forschung begreifbar, sondern steckt regelrecht an mit seiner Begeisterung für Pi. Wußten Sie, daß die Zahl Pi in den bisher gefundenen Nachkommastellen dieser Zahl -- statistisch verschlüsselt -- ihrerseits verborgen ist? Daß Pi in der Bibel vorkommt (allerdings mit einem lausigen Näherungswert)? Daß es eine Formel gibt, die Nachkommastellen liefert, die bis zur 42 Milliardsten Nachkommastelle mit denen von Pi identisch sind, danach aber nicht mehr -- und niemand weiß warum? Dies und noch viel, viel mehr Staunenswertes breitet Delahaye vor seinen Lesern aus, er stellt Mathematiker vor, die sich über Pi und ähnliche Zahlenmonster den Kopf zerbrochen haben: Leibnitz, Euler, Ramanujan -- dieses früh verstorbene Genie, das "mal eben" Formeln auf Notizblätter werfen konnte, die Mathematikern bis heute die Tränen in die Augen schießen lassen. Delahaye zeigt die brillianten Ideen, mit denen er und seine Kollegen heute ihren Problemen zu Leibe rücken, erklärt elegante Beweise, durchdachte Computeralgorithmen und faszinierende Skurrilitäten, wie zum Beispiel eine Zahl, die man zwar definieren, aber niemals berechnen kann. Wer sich auf dieses Buch einläßt, braucht als Nichtmathematiker schon etwas Mut -- denn Delahaye fordert seinen Lesern einiges ab: Unendliche Reihen, Zahlentheorie, wirklich knackige Algebra. Und manchmal geht der Computerexperte mit ihm durch -- möglich, daß nicht alle seine Kollegen alles unterschreiben würden, was er z.B. in Sachen rechnergestützte Mathematik von sich gibt. Aber viele der Schätze in diesem Buch kann man auch heben, ohne sich ein mathematisches Handbuch an die Seite legen zu müssen: Hier ist eben der gesunde Menschenverstand endlich wieder gefragt. "Pi ist ein Spielverderber", "Pi ist überall", "Pi ist eine Falle". Dieses Buch auch -- und eine Herausforderung.

- Abstract
- Die moderne Kultur hat sich mit den Informations- und Computertechnologien erneut Daidalos-Flügel angelegt. Das Buch beschreibt zunächst Entwicklung und Grundlagen dieser Technologien (z.B. programmgesteuerte Computer, KI, wissensbasierte Systeme, Neuronale Netze), untersucht erkenntnistheoretische Fragen computergestützter Mathematik, Natur- und Kulturwissenschaften und entwirft eine Philosophie des Geistes, die den neuen Technologien Rechnung trägt. Philosophie des Geistes, so die These des Buches, geht allerdings nicht in der gegenwärtigen KI-Forschung, Informations- und Kommunikationstheorie, Neurobiologie und Systemtheorie auf, sondern muß der Kern fachübergreifender Forschung und Kulturkritik werden

- Abstract
- Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914), der Begründer des Pragmatismus und der modernen Zeichentheorie (Semiotik), ist der bedeutendste Philosoph, den Amerika hervorgebracht hat. Erst seit den sechziger Jahren wird er auch in Deutschland mit zunehmender Intensität rezipiert. Seine Philosophie der Zeichen und des Handelns vermittelt der Ethik des Pragmatismus weltweit neue Impulse, die nach dem Zusammenbruch der Ideologien von besonderer Aktualität sind. Klaus Oehler, der sich in zahlreichen Publikationen mit Werk und Wirkung von Peirce beschäftigt hat, legt hier eine umfassende Einführung vor, die sich dem Leben von Peirce ebenso eingehend widmet wie seiner Auseinandersetzung mit Kant, seiner Erkenntnistheorie, seinem Begriff der Realität, seiner Zeichentheorie, Ästhetik, Ethik und Religionsphilosphie sowie seinem Entwurf einer evolutionären Kosmologie. Eine allgemeinverständliche Darstellung von Leben und Werk des bedeutendsten amerikanischen Philosophen und Begründers des Pragmatismus Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914). Der 1. Teil beschreibt seinen Lebensweg und seine intellektuelle Entwicklung. Der 2. Teil stellt seine philosophischen Grundgedanken zusammenfassend dar: seine neue Kategorienlehre, seine semiotische Erkenntnistheorie, seine pragmatische Wissenschaftstheorie, seine evolutionäre Kosmologie und seine allgemeine Zeichentheorie. Ein abschliessendes Kapitel widmet sich der Rezeptionsgeschichte des Peirceschen Denkens. Im Anhang Zeittafel, Personenregister und Sachregister.

DER SPIEGEL Das erklärte Ziel dieses Buches ist, den Standpunkt einiger KI-Enthusiasten zu widerlegen, daß Computer irgendwann all das können, was menschliche Gehirne können - und sogar mehr. Aber der Leser merkt bald, dass Pnerose vor allem das Ziel verfolgt, einen Wegzur großen Synthese von klassischer Physik, Quantenphysik und Neurowissenschaften aufzuzeigen. John Horgan in Scientific American Wer "Computerdenken" liest (oder durcharbeitet), sollte nicht auf Antwort hoffen, darf aber neue Sichtwiesen und überraschende Interpretationen erwarten. Ein nahrhaftes Geschenk für naturwissenschaftlich Interessierte. - Abstract
- Obgleich "Wahrheit" ein Thema der Philosophie seit ihren historischen Anfängen war, haben sich mit besonderem Gewicht in der Gegenwart, "Wahrheitstheorien" als eigenes philosophisches Teilgebiet unseres Jahrhunderts etabliert, seit in der Philosophie der sogenannte linguistic turn stattgefunden hat. Auslöser dieser Wende waren einerseits das verstärkte Auseinanderdriften von Philosophie und den sogenannten exakten Wissenschaften (vor allem Mathematik und Physik), andererseits die Entwicklung, daß diese modernen Wissenschaften den Philosophien traditionelle Zuständigkeiten streitig machten, um sogleich, in begriffliche Grundlagenkrisen geratend, neue philosophische Fragen und Probleme zu produzieren. Galt Wahrheit seit der Antike als etwas Absolutes und Unumstößliches, unabhängig davon, ob der Mensch Wahrheit zu erkennen vermag oder nicht, so findet der Wahrheitssuchende heute einen Dschungel von Ansätzen, Vorschlägen, Antworten, Problematisierungen und Skeptizismen. In dieser Situation wählt der Marburger Philosoph Peter Janich einen Mittelweg zwischen Absolutheitsanspruch und bloßem Relativismus, den er die "kulturalistische Lösung" nennt. Denn bei der Besinnung auf die Möglichkeit des Erkennens von Wahrheit stellt sich heraus, daß die Menschheit nicht am Mullpunkt der Wahrheitssuche steht, sondern daß das Fragliche immer relativ zum praktisch Bewährten zu sehen ist. Zugleich stellt sich heraus, daß die Wahrheit kein menschenunabhängiger Selbstzweck ist, sondern daß sie Menschen dazu dient, sich in der Welt einzurichten und zurechtzufinden: In der kulturalistischen Sicht wird Wahrheit vom Selbstzweck zum Mittel.
