    Abstract
    Marktforschung und Informationen über wirtschaftliche Tatbestände sind für Unternehmen (über-)lebenswichtig. So ist das Wissen über Konkurrenten und Märkte Vorbedingung jeder strategischen Planung. Dieses Handbuch ist eine unverzichtbare Hilfe für eine professionelle Informationsbeschaffung. Es behandelt konkrete Vorgehensweisen und Quellen für die Informationssuche. Die Themen geben die häufigsten Fragestellungen aus der Recherchepraxis wieder. Auch wenn das World Wide Web häufig als Universalquelle für Informationssuchende dargestellt wird, nutzen Informationsprofis eine Vielzahl von Quellen, die weit über das Internet hinausgehen und hier vorgestellt werden. Der Leser erhält einen Einblick in verschiedene Online-Datenbanken, CD-ROM-Produkte, Nachschlagewerke und andere Informationsquellen, ergänzt durch Tipps und Tricks von Profis. Das Praxishandbuch eignet sich sowohl als fundierte Einführung als auch als Nachschlagewerk.

So erklären die Autorinnen bereits in der Einleitung: "Durch das Internet besteht Zugang zu einer nie da gewesenen Informationsfülle. Trotzdem ist es zur Beantwortung vieler Fragestellungen nicht ausreichend, oder andere Wege wie z.B. professionelle kostenpflichtige OnlineDatenbanken führen einfacher und schneller zum Ziel." Damit ist die Richtung vorgegeben: Im Internet lässt sich zwar einiges finden, man kann es aber auch professionell angehen! Das Buch gliedert sich in fünf größere Bereiche, nämlich die Grundlagen einer Recherche, Allgemeines zu Wirtschaftsdatenbanken und ihren Recherchemöglichkeiten, Informationen zu einzelnen Aspekten wie etwa Märkten und Branchen, Nachbereitung der Recherche und schließlich ein Übersichtskapitel zu Zeitschriften, Messen, Konferenzen und Verbänden der Informationsbranche. Ouasi angehängt ist Ouellenkapitel. Der erste Bereich besteht aus einem (ausgesprochen kurzen) Abriss zu den Grundlagen einer Recherche; behandelt werden die kritische Beleuchtung der Fragestellung, die Rahmenbedingungen einer Recherche und schließlich die Quellenauswahl. Dies alles geschieht auf nicht einmal fünf Seiten-hier hätte man sich doch (gerade in Hinblick auf das anvisierte Publikum) eine etwas ausführlichere Darstellung der Grundlagen für eine professionelle Wirtschaftsrecherche gewünscht.
    Schon etwas umfangreicher ist der zweite Teil geraten, in dem die unterschiedlichen Datenbanktypen und die wichtigsten Suchkommandos erklärt werden. Dazu werden Tipps gegeben, den bzw. die für die eigenen Bedürfnisse richtigen Hosts auszuwählen. Dazu gehen die Autorinnen auch näher auf die Vertragsstrukturen der einzelnen Hosts ein. Alle diese Ausführungen zeichnen sich durch hohe Verständlichkeit und Praxisbezug aus. Als zentral können die Kapitel drei bis sieben angesehen werden, die zusammen den dritten Teil des Buchs bilden. Hier wird auf die einzelnen Recherchebereiche eingegangen. Ausführliche Informationen finden sich zu den Typen von Firmeninformationen, zu Markt- und Brancheninformationen, Länder- und Personeninformationen sowie zur Literatur in Form von Presse, wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten und Büchern. Diese Kapitel geben konkrete Anleitungen für den wenig geübten Nutzer, wie eine Recherche beispielsweise nach Firmenfusionen zu bewerkstelligen ist. Hilfreich sind auch die im Anschluss an die betreffenden Kapitel angefügten Praxisbeispiele. Hier werden nochmals anhand konkreter Fragestellungen der Aufbau und das Ergebnis einer Recherche dargestellt. Die genannten zentralen Kapitel bilden alle relevanten Recherchebereiche ab und führen den Leser verständlich in die Besonderheiten des jeweiligen Bereichs ein. Im Text werden die relevanten Datenbanken genannt, Informationen zu den Anbietern und Preisen finden sich allerdings erst im zehnten Kapitel, das alle im Text genannten Quellen versammelt. Diese Einteilung mag sinnvoll sein, damit nicht einige Quellen doppelt und dreifach genannt werden müssen. Allerdings wäre es dem Lesefluss oft doch dienlich gewesen, Informationen insbesondere zu den Preisen der jeweiligen Angebote direkt mitzuliefern. Dazu kommt, dass auch in diesem Kapitel die Preiseinteilungen recht grob durch Symbole gekennzeichnet sind. Die erste Einteilung geht hier bis EUR 50,- gerade im Bereich der kleineren Beträge wäre aber eine feinere Unterteilung notwendig gewesen. So erfährt der Leser beispielsweise nur, dass ein Presseartikel aus einer Datenbank unter 50 ? kostet. Die im Quellenteil empfohlenen Zeitschriftenabonnements kosten alle etwa gleich viel, nämlich "zwischen 51 und 250 ?". Nach den Kapiteln zu den Recherchebereichen werden Möglichkeiten der Validierung der Ergebnisse und deren Aufbereitung beschrieben. Auch dieses Kapitel ist wieder recht knapp gehalten und insbesondere bei der Präsentation der Ergebnisse hätte man sich etwas mehr gewünscht als die wenigen Informationen zur Weiterverarbeitung der Ergebnisse, zu Übersetzungen und zum Urheberrecht (zusammen nur drei Seiten!). Hier wäre auch die Frage interessant gewesen, wie man eigentlich aus der meist großen Fülle des recherchierten Materials einen gut verständlichen, umfassenden und trotzdem in angemessener Zeit lesbaren Report macht. Die große Stärke des Buchs liegt im Zusammentragen der relevanten Quellen, die für eine erfolgreiche Recherche verwendet werden sollten. Insbesondere für den wenig erfahrenen Researcher ist alles Basiswissen enthalten. Das Buch lässt sich gut dafür nutzen, bei einer Rechercheanfrage nachzuprüfen, welche Quellen man nutzen sollte bzw. ob man wirklich an alle wichtigen Quellen gedacht hat. Eher schwach fallen die Kapitel zur Vor- und Nachbereitung der Recherche aus. Hier hätte man sich ausführlichere Hinweise gewünscht, da gerade diese Punkte - vor allem auch, wenn man den Informationsprofi in Konkurrenz zum im Nachbarbüro sitzenden "Internet-Sucher" betrachtet - kritisch für erfolgreiche Recherchen und deren Vermittlung anzusehen sind. Die kleineren Schwächen tun dem Nutzen des Buchs jedoch nur wenig Abbruch - es sei also all jenen empfohlen, die in der Praxis Wirtschaftsinformationen zu beschaffen haben, aber noch nicht über umfangreiche Ouellenkenntnis verfügen."

    Abstract
    Betrachtet wird der europäische Entwurf der Informationsgesellschaft in der Folge des EG-Weißbuches von 1993 und der Tagung in Korfu (1994). Es zeigt sich die zentrale Rolle des Informationsengineering. Hier geht es um die Produktion, Speicherung, Verteilung und Abfrage von Informationen. Wirtschaftliche Kennziffern beleuchten den deutschen Informationsmarkt (Online-Datenbanken, CD-ROM, Videotex, professionelle Informationsvermittlung). Die Relevanz elektronischer Informationsdienste für die betriebswirtschaftliche Praxis (Branchen- und Konkurrenzanalysen, Benchmarking) wird anhand von konkreten Beispielrecherchen demonstriert. Elektronische Datenbanken gestatten, die wissenschaftliche Forschung im Rahmen der Wissenschaftsevaluation mittels Publikations- Zitations- oder Themenanalysen zu beschreiben und zu bewerten. Ein Kapitel beschreibt detailliert diejenigen Tätigkeiten, die beim Auf- und Ausbau elektronischer Informationsdienste routinemäßig durchgeführt werden, mit dem Ziel, Qualitätsmerkmale für die Informationstätigkeit abzuleiten. Die Komplexität der Informationstätigkeiten führt u.a. in Bereiche der fuzzy logic und der Informationshermeneutik. Abgeschlossen wird das Buch mit einer 'Anatomie' einer konkreten Datenbank. Beispiel ist die ifo Literaturdatenbank, die erfolgreich bei mehreren Hosts als Online-Datenbank sowie zusätzlich als CD-ROM Datenbank vermarktet wird

    Abstract
    Informationsmanagement ist Management- wie Technikdisziplin und gilt als Teil der Unternehmensführung. Die Notwendigkeitvon Medienunternehmen, einem qualifizierten Informationsmanagement nachzukommen, gründet vor allem auf jüngsten Entwicklungen im sozialen, wirtschaftlichen und technischen Bereich. Eine landesweite Analyse aus Expertengesprächen mit Geschäftsführern und Technischen Leitern in österreichischen Medienunternehmen brachte folgende Ergebnisse: Medienunternehmen betreiben ein auf mehrere Abteilungen verteiltes, sog. funktionales Informationsmanagement. Die Institutionalisierung in Form eines Informationsmanagers oder einer IM-Abteilung wird von der Unternehmensgröße, entsprechenden Bewerbern oder auch der Finanzierung abhängig gemacht. In einem Branchenvergleich von Medienunternehmen mit Banken und Versicherungen ergaben sich in Bezug auf das Informationsmanagement viele Übereinstimmungen; allerdings übersteigt bei Medienunternehmen die Bedeutung der Informations- und Kommunikationssysteme eindeutig den Stellenwert der Informations- und Kommunikationstechnik. In einem Ausblick wird Medienunternehmen die Schaffung eines Informationsmanagers empfohlen.
