    Abstract
Describes how librarians at the Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library, California University Los Angeles (UCLA), developed a library user training programme, based on computer assisted instruction, for the 800 to 900 undergraduate biology students per year who enrol in the department's basic, compulsory, introductory course. Compares the effectiveness of computer assisted instruction with the lecture method, using a range of techniques, including a follow up survey. Concludes that computer assisted instruction in combination with the laboratory manual is an effective and user friendly way of offering user training

    Abstract

    Abstract
Traditionally, reference librarians at Tennessee University taught basic library skills through a lecture format. Desiring to communicate more effectively with students, reduce burnout, and alleviate scheduling difficulties, the department decided to develop a computer assisted instruction (CAI) programme for English 102 classes. Discusses the development and implementation of 3 HyperCard modules to help students learn to find periodical articles, use the online catalogue, and search MLA on CD-ROM. Includes reactions from students, English instructors and librarians, and concludes with plans to develop CAI modules for other instructional needs in the future

    Abstract
Knowledge-Based Systems (KBS) are computer based expert systems intended for development and use in libraries. Librarians have experimented with KBS to make their expertise available at all times or to answer routine questions. In the past KBS have had limited success in libraries. The increase in computer-based library OPAC systems and the development of the Internet WWW would allow a single KBS to benefit a much larger number of librarians and their clients. Librariand might want to consider agian whether to include KBS among their resources. Discusses the special skills of reference librarians and of the questions they might ask in considering a KBS project. Offers a bibliography, with detailed contents notes, of articles and books in disciplines fundamental to KBS

    Abstract
Describes the development of Lotus Notes based databases designed to improve the quality of the reference service provided by Horn Library, Babson College, Wellesley, Massachusetts. Babson College is a 4 year business college and the database: Assign2; was created by the Informerger team to maximize public service delivery. Assign2 works as an itelligence gathering tool, one goal being to determine which professors and departments are assigning which kinds of projects to students and to collect relevant information and sources related to these projects. This information forms the basis for improving reference information provision to staff and students with particular reference to user training. Lotus Notes 3.3 is mounted on the college's computer network, Globenet, with 2 public access workstations at the Information Kiosk and in the Library. Students can open up any Lotus Notes database and search for a particular project assignment. The retrieved assignment contains useful research suggestions for sources of specific information. Links are provided from the entries in the Lotus Notes databases directly to relevant Internet and WWW sites

    Abstract
This study explores computer scientists' modes of communication within scientific inquiry. Situated in a socially constructed research practice, the findings provide a focused view of the collective use of two sets of communication mechanisms - electronic information mechanisms and interpersonal communication channels - within a technology-intensive field. These results are theoretically and pragmatically interesting for both scholarly communication research and library and information professionals. They suggest that to understand scholarly communication, exploring social cues embedded in the real world practice will yield valuable information, while the detailed examination of research practice may provide a resource for the general design of systems to support collaborative scientific work.

    Abstract

    Abstract
Hypothesizing that workplace significantly affects information-seeking patterns, this study compared accessibility and use of information sources among 233 Israeli computer scientists and software engineers, employed in industry and academy, using a mail questionnaire, which yielded a usable reply rate of 33%. The two groups were found to differ significantly in age, education, seniority, and type of research they performed (basic vs. applied). Printed textbooks, professional journals, and oral discussions with colleagues or experts in the organization were common to both groups, topping almost all lists of accessibility and use. For most information sources, however, the two groups differed significantly and consistently. Printed professional journals as weIl as printed and electronic conference or meeting papers were consistently more accessible and more often used by the academy group, while the industry group reported greater access to and more frequent use of electronic textbooks and trade or promotional literature. In regard to handbooks and standards, in-house technical reports (printed), government technical reports (Internet), librarians and technical specialists (Internet), and oral discussions with supervisors, no significant differences in accessibility were found, but their use by the industry group was much higher. In both groups, accessibility was only partly related to use, and more so among the academy than the industry group.

    Abstract
