- Abstract
- Es werden die Grundprobleme der Sacherschließung in Online-Katalogen dargestellt. Ein anschließendes Kapitel behandelt das Verhältnis von verbaler und klassifikatorischer Erschließung. Ein wichtiger Teil der Aussagen betrifft das Gebiet der verbalen Sacherschließung und damit das nationale Regelwerk: Es werden Vorschläge für eine Reform der RSWK im Hinblick auf die Erfordernisse der OPAC unterbreitet. Regelwerk und Normdatei (SWD) bilden dabei eine Einheit und werden zusammen betrachtet. Im vergangenen Jahr wurden die Ergebnisse der Expertengruppe mit dem Schwerpunkt Formalerschließung vorgelegt, nun folgen die Aussagen zur Sacherschließung, welche die Expertengruppe - in veränderter personeller Zusammensetzung unter Leitung von Dr. Friedrich Geißelmann, Regensburg - erarbeitet hat. Die bibliothekarische Öffentlichkeit ist aufgefordert, sich dazu bis zum Jahresende zu äußern. Beide Berichte beziehen sich aufeinander und versuchen, den Zusammenhang zwischen Formal- und Sacherschließung herzustellen. Vom gegenwärtigen Stand der Sacherschließung in deutschen Bibliotheken ausgehend - wozu auch durch die Gruppe im Frühjahr 1993 eine Umfrage in wissenschaftlichen und Öffentlichen Bibliotheken gemacht worden ist, werden die Grundprobleme der Sacherschließung in Online-Katalogen dargestellt. Ein anschließendes Kapitel behandelt das Verhältnis von verbaler und klassifikatorischer Erschließung. - Abstract
- Das Buch ist ein fachübergreifendes Werk und richtet sich an Studenten, Dozenten und interessierte Laien aus allen Bereichen moderner Wissenschaft und Technik, insbesondere Informatik, Informationstechnik, den Natur- und Ingenieurwissenschaften. Der Informationsbegriff ist in aller Munde. Fast jeder gebraucht ihn intuitiv. Viele Wissenschaftsgebiete verwenden eine für sie typische Definition, eine hinreichend systematische Theorie fehlt jedoch. Das Buch versucht, Brücken zu einem neuen Verständnis zu bauen. Ein Verständnis, das letztlich verlangt, vielfältige Wissensgebiete zu überblicken, kritisch zu befragen und die Spuren des Informationsbegriffs auf interdisziplinären Pfaden nachzuzeichnen.

- Abstract
- Kaum eine Wissenschaft der Neuzeit dürfte so geschichtslos angetreten sein wie die Computertheorie. Die simulierte Gleichzeitigkeit alles je Geschriebenen, die der Bildschirm erzeugt, scheint die Beschäftigung mit der Historie abzuschaffen. Das System schluckt die Geschichte und läßt so vergessen, daß es seinerseits eine solche hat. Uns aber hat sie nicht mehr losgelassen, seit wir vor Jahren an an die Schriften des mittelalterlichen Theologikers Raimundus Lullus gerieten. Seine logischen Modelle haben wir in die Computersprachen Cobol sowie Assembler übertragen und sie in einen Berliner Großrechner eingegeben. So entstand aus einer bloßen Übersetzung das ablauffähige Programm "Ars Magna. Author: Raimundus Lullus, um 1300". Dieser älteste Systementwurf war uns der Tigersprung in das Vergangene, der das Kontinuum der Geschichtslosigkeit aufsprengt. Im Kurzschluß von Jetztzeit und Vergangenheit glühen Verbindungen auf, die scheinbar Bekanntes in neuem Licht erscheinen lassen. Daß die Elektronenhirne einen solch direkten Draht zu mittelalterlichen Gottesbeweisen haben, verlangt nach einer Spurensicherung neuer Art, nach einer besonderen Archäologie des Immateriellen. Die Spur führt auf ein ungesichertes Terrain, auf verschüttete Pfade durch zerbrochene Buchstäblichkeiten, die keine Kabbala mehr zusammenhält. Vertraute Oppositionsbegriffe, die den Dingen eine neuzeitliche Ordnung geben würden, wie Wissenschaft/Kunst, Subjekt/Objekt, Religion/Technik, greifen hier nicht mehr. Hier bedarf es einer anderen Lektüre. Und in solcher Überschreitung zeigen uns die alten Texte plötzlich die Spuren des Neuen. Die von Raimundus Lullus ab 1275 entwickelte Logik ist Gestalt geworden Kosmologie. Sie verkörpert Offenbarungswissen, demonstriert die Logik des Universums. In ihrem kombinatorischen Verfahren sind Gottesbeweis und Maschinenbau identisch, sie fallen zusammen, bilden keine Gegensätze. Mit ihr wird ein Feld eröffnet, das sich nicht durch Widersprüche strukturiert, sondern durch hemmungslose Kommunikation von anderweitig Getrenntem. Alles folgt hier ein und derselben Logik, einer Ars Combinatoria, die durch alle Bereiche geht. Sie durchmißt die gesamte Stufenleiter des Seins, von den Steinen, Pflanzen, Tieren, über Menschen, Himmel, Engel bis hinauf zu Gott und wieder hinab. So verbindet diese Logik Himmel und Erde, Asien und Europa, medizinischen und juristischen Körper, Musik und die Quadratur des Kreises etc. Diese Kombinatorik leistet also, was der Mythos älteren Kulturen bot: die Verknüpfung von allem mit allem. So entstehen Netzwerke, als deren ältester Programmierer sich Raimundus Lullus erweist. Seine Ars Magna liefert uns die Basis-Algorithmen, seine Tafeln geben uns den Code des Universums. Hierin berührt er sich mit einer Theorie des Universums als "big computer", wie kein Geringerer als Konrad Zuse sie in unseren Tagen vorgekegt hat. Lullus war der erste Hacker in den himmlischen Datenbanken.

- In diesem Buch werden theoretische Ansätze und Modelle, die in der Literatur verstreut sind, zu einer modellübergreifenden Theorie der künstlichen neuronalen Netze zusammengefügt. Mit ständigem Blick auf die Biologie wird - ausgehend von einfachsten Netzen - gezeigt, wie sich die Eigenschaften der Modelle verändern, wenn allgemeinere Berechnungselemente und Netztopologien eingeführt werden.õJedes Kapitel enthält Beispiele und ist ausführlich illustriert und durch bibliographische Anmerkungen abgerundet. - Abstract
- Seit 1988 gibt es das Förderprogramm 'Altbestandserschließung' (ABE) der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft. Mit dieser Publikation ist zum einen beabsichtigt, über den Stand des ABE-Programms der DFG zu berichten und die bislang erreichten Ergebnisse des Unternehmens zu reflektieren. Auf der anderen Seite ist intendiert, Bibliotheken, die keine Konversion ihrer Kataloge aus Eigenmitteln beabsichtigen, konkrete Anregungen und praktische Hinweise für die Planung, Organisation und Durchführung der Arbeiten zu geben. Der Text gliedert sich in einen allgmeinen Teil, in dem über die Ausgangssituation und die Zielperspektive bei der Einrichtung des Programms, über Auswahlkriterien, Organisation und die konkreten Arbeitsgrundsätze informaiert wird. Es folgt ein ausführlicher spezieller Teil, zu dem alle derzeit in dem Programm geförderten Bibliotheken ihre Berichte beigesteuert haben. Abschließend wird eine kritische Zwischenbilanz aus der Sicht einzelner Projekte gezogen, in der über bislang erreichte Ergebnisse und - aus der Sicht des Förderers und seiner Gremien - über Erkenntnisse zur Umsetzung und Steuerung eines solchen Programms berichtet wird

- Abstract
- This book coherently documents the results and experiences of a major digital library pilot effort, the MeDoc project (Multimedia Electronic Documents). This two-year project was initiated by the German Informatics Society (GI) and involved authors, publishers, librarians, and computer science departments. The prototype distributed digital library system developed during the initiative was operated in a nationwide trial for several months. - Abstract
- Artificial Intelligence and cognitive science are the two fields devoted to the study and development of knowledge-based systems (KBS). Over the past 25 years, researchers have proposed several approaches for modeling knowledge in KBS, including several kinds of formalism such as semantic networks, frames, and logics. In the early 1980s, J.F. Sowa introduced the conceptual graph (CG) theory which provides a knowledge representation framework consisting of a form of logic with a graph notation and integrating several features from semantic net and frame representations. Since that time, several research teams over the world have been working on the application and extension of CG theory in various domains ranging from natural language processing to database modeling and machine learning. This volume contains selected papers from the international conference on Conceptual Structures held in the city of Quebec, Canada, August 4-7, 1993. The volume opens with invited papers by J.F. Sowa, B.R. Gaines, and J. Barwise.
