    Abstract
    Das Buch ist ein fachübergreifendes Werk und richtet sich an Studenten, Dozenten und interessierte Laien aus allen Bereichen moderner Wissenschaft und Technik, insbesondere Informatik, Informationstechnik, den Natur- und Ingenieurwissenschaften. Der Informationsbegriff ist in aller Munde. Fast jeder gebraucht ihn intuitiv. Viele Wissenschaftsgebiete verwenden eine für sie typische Definition, eine hinreichend systematische Theorie fehlt jedoch. Das Buch versucht, Brücken zu einem neuen Verständnis zu bauen. Ein Verständnis, das letztlich verlangt, vielfältige Wissensgebiete zu überblicken, kritisch zu befragen und die Spuren des Informationsbegriffs auf interdisziplinären Pfaden nachzuzeichnen.

    In den nachfolgenden Teilen "Business und Industrie", "Business to Consumer" und "Consumer" werden zahlreiche Anwendungsfälle mit ihren jeweiligen Besonderheiten beschrieben. Vermutlich wird sich nicht jeder Leser des Buchs gleichermaßen für alle in den hinteren Buchteilen beschriebenen Beispiele interessieren. Andererseits aber habe ich zum Beispiel durch das zwölfte Kapitel "Schweißen mit 60 Parametern ist ein echtes Handwerk" von Heinz Hackl, Michael Burmester und Andreas Beu gelernt, mit welchen hohen Anforderungen an die Gestaltung eines Interface zur Bedienung einer digitalen Schweißmaschine sich die Entwickler des Gerätes konfrontiert sehen. obwohl zunächst gar nicht in dem Maße erwartet, greifen natürlich auch hier die im ersten Buchteil behandelten Prinzipien des benutzerzentrierten Gestaltens, der detaillierten Anforderungsanalyse und der systematischen Evaluation, wie man sie eher von Interfaces für Software-Systeme oder Websites kennt. In seiner Gesamtheit vermittelt das Buch von Joachim Machate und Michael Burmester fundiertes Grundlagenwissen rund um die nutzerzentrierte Gestaltung von Interfaces, das mit Hilfe vieler Anwendungsbeispiele demonstriert und vertieft wird. Es richtet sich jedoch nicht nur an Einsteiger in das Gebiet; auch als Leser, der bereits mit Fragen der Ergonomie und Usability von Geräte- und Computeroberflächen etwas vertraut ist, wird man die Beiträge mit Gewinn lesen."
