    Abstract
Traces the development of distance education programmes which has been fuelled by the non-traditional student, the growth of the Internet, television and videoconferencing. Key elements of library services for distance education are: reference services, a portfolio of nearby libraries or other resources, document delivery, provision of a broad suite of electronic databases, electronic journals, a database of subject specialists, and use of electronic resources on the WWW

    Abstract
The Internet refers to more than 50.000 backbone regional and local computer networks in more than 50 countries with an estimated user base of over 3 million people. Finding out who has what available on the Internet has become a real problem since the network is expanding so quickly. Describes Archie (the McGill School of Computer Science Archive Server Listing Service), a tool which was developed to help solve this problem. Also describes Gopher, a distributed networking and document delivery system designed to access electronic information and navigate the Internet

    Abstract
The World Wide Web (WWW) is one of the newest tools available to assist in the navigation of the Internet. As with other client/server network tools such as Gopher and WAIS, developments with the Web are in a dynamic state of change. Basically, WWW is an effort to organize information on the Internet plus local information into a set of hypertext documents; a person navigates the network by moving from one document to another via a set of hypertext links

    Abstract
The Internet provides access to hundreds of library and information systems around the world. However, online library systems and databases exhibit a variety of limitations which are often not apparent to the user. Briefly discusses the following: scope and content of databases; limitations for locally loaded periodical indexes; dissimilar search protocols; unfamiliar log- in, log-off and terminal requirements; online help and ease of use; and passwording

    Abstract
Describes Veronica, an Internet navigational tool developed at the University of Nevada in 1992, which indexes the menu items of hundreds of Gophers, allows users to search its indexes and provides access to services retrieved by such searches. Explains how to connect to Veronica, how gophers are included in a Veronica search, and the availability of the Veronica server software. Lists 4 publicly-accessible Veronica servers which index over 500 gopher servers

    Abstract
The Internet now provides access to so much information that it is a problem to know what is available and how to navigate through it. The Wide Area Information Server (WAIS) is one project aiming to help solve the problem for the end user, by means of a graphical user inferface and the use of natural language for queries, which is then translated into the WAIS protocol. Describes how WAIS was developed, how it works, and difficulties with the project
