    Abstract
    In 1997 a survey was held in the Netherlands by the Innovatie Wetenschappelijke Informatievoorziening (Innovation in Scientific Information Services) Steering Group to establish how much use students and research workers make of the Internet. 84% of respondents reported it useful for email communication, whilst 49% used it for consulting web documents. However, only 27% of respondents used it to consult electronic journals. A majority of respondents asked for greater assistance from library staff

Libraries which do not offer Internet access are depriving their users of access to a vast store of information. As the cost of scientific journals continues to soar the Internet has encouraged the creation of specialist databases, such as the elementary particle physics database at Los Alamos National Laboratory.     Abstract
    Development of the SURFnet network enables libraries in the Netherlands to access the rapidly expanding resources of Internet. Plans are currently in hand to provide SURFnet users with the latest WWW and gopher technology. From Mar 95 the Nederlands Bibliotheek en Lektuur Centrum will make SURFnet available to public libraries. The European Commission is currently considering requests for funding for a number of such projects, including 17 request fro Dutch libraries

    Abstract
    Developments in electronic communication technology have meda online databases a normal part of library collections. To provide users with direct access to Internet resources the Dutch Royal Library has cooperated with several university libraries in the Netherlands to develop the Nederlandse Basisclassificatie Web. Subject specialists select sources, add English summaries and NBW code, and input them to the online database. A Web desk and training workshops have been provided to assist users, and improvements to the system will simplify search procedures

    Rotterdam City Library in the Netherlands has for a number of years cooperated with the Erasmus University and Maritime Museum to provide a union catalogue of holdings. However, the 1st steps have been taken to create a consortium of 20 libraries offering a shared catalogue via the Internet.     The Northern Light Internet search engine was inaugurated in Aug 1997. The service differs from existing services in that it classifies search results in a set of custom search folders and for a modest fee provides access to a range of bibliographical resources not normally available via the Web.
