    Abstract
    Leistungsfähige Arbeitsplatzrechner mit ihrer Fähigkeit, Bild, Text und Ton zu kombinieren, und die weltweite Vernetzung der Arbeitsstationen über das "WorldWideWeb", die den unmittelbaren Austausch multimedialer Dokumente erlauben, verändern nicht nur Formen und Strukturen der alltäglichen Informationsbeschaffung und Informationsweitergabe, sondern prägen auch nachhaltig die Organisation und Repräsentation sowie die Kommunikation und Präsentation von Fachwissen. Die Deutsche Sektion der "International Society of Knowledge-Organization" (ISKO) empfindet angesichts dieser Entwicklungen eine besondere Herausforderung, sich wissenschaftlich und pragmatisch mit den dadurch verursachten Implikationen auseinander zu setzen. Deshalb beschäftigte sich die im Herbst 1997 an der Humboldt-Universität Berlin stattfindende Tagung Wissensorganisation '97 schwerpunktmäßig mit Fraugen und orientierenden Aussagen zum Begriff Bild, zur Bildrepräsentation und -manipulation, zu Visualisierungsprozessen, multimedialen Präsentationen und Anwendungen sowie den Besonderheiten und Möglichkeiten des Internets und seiner Strukturen. Gegenstand der Tagung waren aber auch allgemeine Grundlagen der Wissensorganisation, beispielsweise Probleme der Begriffsabgrenzung, der Klassifikation und des Information-Retrieval, die ebenfalls von der ISKO thematisch abgedeckt werden. Der vorliegende Band 5 der Reihe "Fortschritte in der Wissensorganisation" beinhaltet eine repräsentative Auswahl der Tagungsbeiträge. Sie sind bewußt auf die Bedürfnisse einer interdisziplinär orientierten Leserschaft ausgerichtet und vermitteln einen faszinierenden Einblick in die Möglichkeiten, Techniken und Hilfsmittel moderner multimedialer und vernetzter Dokumente und Wissensstrukturen.

    Abstract
    Auf keinem anderen Gebiet sind Entwicklungen so schnelllebig wie in der Informations- und Kommunikationstechnik. Neue Entwicklungen wie Telefon, Internet, Desktop Publishing, digitale Musik, Fernseh- und Videotechnik oder Computergrafik durchdringen nicht nur das tägliche Leben, sie verändern es auch. Wer hätte zum Beispiel vor einigen Jahren gedacht, dass man an jedem Ort auf der Welt und zu jedem Zeitpunkt telefonisch erreichbar ist, man seine Musiksammlung von mehreren zehntausend Titeln in der Hosentasche herumträgt oder publizistisch tätig werden und Millionen von Menschen erreichen kann. So haben sich die Entwicklungen der Informationstechnik in großen kulturellen Veränderungen niedergeschlagen, insbesondere durch Entwicklungen, die aus der Verbindung von Kunst und Technik, von Ästhetik und IT-Werkzeugen, von Kultureinrichtungen und Informationssystemen oder von Mobilität und Kommunikation entstanden sind.     Abstract
    Neben den theoretischen und allgemeinen Grundlagen von Informationsethik und Bibliotheksethik wird das Spektrum ethischer Konflikte und Dilemmata an Beispielen aus der Praxis des Berufsfelds Bibliothek und Information konkret erläutert. Dabei wird deutlich, dass wissenschaftlich fundierte Aussagen der Informationsethik und der Bibliotheksethik grundlegend für die wertbezogene Standardisierung bibliothekarischer Arbeit und äußerst hilfreich für ethisch abgesicherte Entscheidungen im Berufsalltag sind.

    Abstract
    Die traditionellen Verfahren der bibliothekarischen Sacherschließung - entwickelt für Zettelkataloge - werden heute für den Aufbau begrifflichen Datenbanken angewendet. Auf den Jahrestagungen der Gesellschaft für Klassifikation in Kaiserslautern und Oldenburg wurden die dabei entstandenen Probleme in vielfältigen Beiträgen durchleuchtet. Neben grundsätzlichen theoretischen fragen standen die praktischen Möglichkeiten von automatisierten Systemen zur Gewinnung von Ordnungsdaten und zur Verbesserung des Retrieval im Vordergrund
