    Abstract
    Dieser Beitrag handelt von unterschiedlichen Arten verfügbarer Software zur Erzeugung von Registern und untersucht, ob diese dazu benutzt werden können, ein Register nach internationalen Normen zu erstellen. Da oft behauptet wird, dass die Registererstellung mit einem Computer und ohne Einsatz des Menschen durchführbar sei, untersuchen die Autoren, weshalb Indexieren eine Aktivität des Menschen sein muss und weshalb eine automatische Registererstellung kein zufriedenstellendes Register hervorbringen kann. Automatische Registererstellung kann bestenfalls einen Ausgangspunkt zur weiteren Indexierung liefern. Anschließend wird die Möglichkeit der Registererstellung mit allgemein verfügbarer Software untersucht. Dies kann akzeptable Register hervorbringen, wenngleich oft nur auf mühsame Weise. Für den professionellen Indexierer stellt daher spezielle Indexing Software die bevorzugte Option dar. Die drei am meisten benutzten speziellen Indexierungsprogramme werden kurz bewertet. Ausrichtung und Aussehen dieser Programme sind sehr unterschiedlich, aber die Merkmale und Output-Optionen sind sehr ähnlich. Website Indexing ist ein relativ neues Spezialgebiet innerhalb der Disziplin des Indexierens. Zwei Programme - eine Freeware und ein kommerzielles - zur Erstellung von Registern von Websites werden erörtert. Das Fazit insgesamt ist, dass das Registermachen eine Aktivität ist, die intellektuellen Input des Menschen benötigt. Software kann den Input hervorragend verbessern, aber nicht den Anteil des Menschen daran ersetzen.

    Abstract
    Das Deutsche Netzwerk der Indexer (DNI) wurde von einigen Indexing-Spezialisten im Sommer 2004 gegründet. Es fungiert als fachliche Plattform von lndexern im deutschsprachigen Raum, um das Bewusstsein für professionelle Registererstellung (= Indexing) in der Allgemeinheit und in der Fachwelt zu fördern, um Kontakte von Indexern und Fachverbänden auszubauen, um die Qualität der Registererstellung zu verbessern und das fachliche Verständnis zu verbreiten. Dazu veröffentlichen Mitglieder des DNI Fachbeiträge in Zeitschriften und Büchern, halten Kurse und Seminare ab, organisieren eine jährliche Info-Veranstaltung auf der Frankfurter Buchmesse, bieten Verlagsberatung und - last but not least- bieten selbst Registererstellung als Serviceleistung an.

    "Die Qualität der Register und das Fachwissen zur Registererstellung befindet sich hierzulande nach DNI-Einschätzung generell in einem schlechten Zustand - auch im wissenschaftlichen Verlagswesen. Grundlegende Fehler kommen immer wieder vor, sowohl was die Erstellung der Index-Einträge als auch typografische Aspekte angeht. Oft wird auch bei der Vorgehensweise der Registererstellung das Rad neu erfunden, obwohl es bewährte Tech n i ken, Methoden und Software gibt. Das DNI möchte helfen, diesen Zustand zu verbessern und derartige Defizite und verbreitete Fehleinschätzungen zum Indexing abzubauen. Ein Schwerpunkt der bisherigen Info-Veranstaltungen auf der Buchmesse waren Präsentationen moderner Software für die Indexerstellung. Dabei handelt es sich um Programme, die die intellektuelle Arbeit des Indexers auf effektive Weise unterstützen. Diese spezielle lndexing-Software ist in der weltweit führenden Indexing-Szene in angloamerikanischen Ländern weit verbreitet. Das DNI unterhält sehr gute Beziehungen zu den Partnerverbänden in anderen Ländern, so zum Beispiel zum Nederlands Indexers Netwerk (NIN), aber auch zu den großen Fachverbänden, der Society of indexers (SI) in Großbritannien und der American Society of Indexers (ASI). Die SI feierte letztes Jahr ihr 50-jähriges Bestehen und gibt seit 1958 die Fachzeitschrift »The Indexer - The International Journal of lndexing« heraus. Auf der DNI-Website (www.d-indexer.org) werden im Bereich »Fragen« Aspekte der Registererstellung erläutert. Der Bereich »Ressourcen« beinhaltet unter anderem eine Bibliografie mit deutsch sprachigem Kontext, Index-Rezensionen und Links zu Indexer-Fachverbänden. Im Bereich »Mitglieder« finden sich auch diejenigen Indexer, die Registererstellung für Verlage und andere Auftraggeber anbieten. Für eine spezielle Suche innerhalb der Website steht ein ständig aktualisierter Site Index zur Verfügung. Das DNI ist stets daran interessiert, neue Kontakte zu knüpfen, insbesondere auch zu fachlich verwand ten Organisationen und Personen, die ein Interesse daran haben, Registererstellung als eigenständiges Fachgebiet hierzulande voranzubringen."

    Die PDS - Pressedatenbank Retrieval Software - ist eine neue Informationsdatenbank-Software. Sie ist einsatzfähig für Literaturhinweise und Volltextspeicherung. Sie läuft auf IBM-kompatiblem Rechnern. Sie wurde auf dem Hintergrund zehnjähriger Erfahrung im Umgang mit Datenbanken entworfen. PDS verfügt über eine einzigartige phonetische Abfragemöglichkeit, über ein Programm zur Herstellung gedruckter Register und eine Schnittstelle zu dem elektronischen Massenspeicher MEGADOC von Philips. Der Bereich Website-Indexing befasst sich mit der Index-Erstellung und -Pflege für Websites und Intranets - ähnlich zu Registern für Printpublikationen. Ein Website-Index hat oft die Bezeichnung Site Index oder A-Z Index und sollte zudem nicht mit Site Maps verwechselt werden. Das Buch füllt gerade auch hierzulande eine Riesenlücke aus: Nach Einschätzung des Deutschen Netzwerks der Indexer (DNI) ist das Wissensdefizit über Website-Indexing in der deutschen Web- und IT-Szene enorm. Die Autorin beginnt in diesem Sinne auch gleich mit zwei Kernaussagen des Buches: 1. Website-Indexing sei deshalb in der Web-Szene nicht so verbreitet, weil die Kenntnisse der Methoden zur Index-Erstellung fehlen und/oder die nötigen Tools unbekannt sind. 2. Ein guter Index stelle für viele Sites die effektivste Suchmethode dar - trotz der Konkurrenz zu Navigationsmenüs und Sucheingabe. Verdeutlicht werden sodann die Unterschiede zu Print-Registern, der bedeutendste betrifft die Locators (Fundstellen), die in der Regel keine Seitenangaben, sondern Links sind.
    Ein Kapitel über HTML-Grundlagen ist für diejenigen Indexer gedacht, die sich in diesem Bereich bisher nicht oder wenig auskennen. Ein weiteres Kapitel verdeutlicht die HTML-Tags, die speziell für die Website-Index-Erstellung von Bedeutung sind. Die Erläuterungen zu Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) ist ausreichend, aber etwas knapp; hier wären einige CSS-Techniken für Fortgeschrittene von Interesse gewesen. Auf die Möglichkeiten von Konvertierungs-Tools (wie HTML/Prep), mit denen Dokumente ins HTML-Format umgewandelt werden können, sowie von Online Help Authoring Tools wird ebenfalls eingegangen. Sie bilden eine gute Ergänzung zu den indexspezifischen HTML-Erläuterungen. Das Thema XML ist bewusst ausgeschlossen worden, um sich vom Fokus des Buches nicht zu weit zu entfernen. Dennoch hätte man sich als Leser zumindest ein paar grundsätzliche Erläuterungen im Kontext zum Website-Indexing gewünscht. Ein Kapitel über Dedicated-IndexingSoftware behandelt deren Möglichkeiten einer Index-Erstellung für Websites. Die Autorin argumentiert überzeugend, dass die großen Vorteile dieser von Indexern weltweit am meisten eingesetzten Software deren mächtige Möglichkeiten zur Erstellung, Bearbeitung, Veränderung und Kontrolle von Index-Einträgen sind, was einer hohen Index-Qualität zugute kommt. Die HTML-Ausgabe-Optionen dieser Software-Art sind allerdings etwas eingeschränkter, so dass der Output oft einer Nachbearbeitung bedarf. Es folgen zwei Kapitel über spezielle Website-Indexing-Software. XRefHT (gesprochen: Shreft) ist eine Freeware, die von Prof. Timothy Craven (University of Western Ontario) entwickelt wurde. HTML Indexer ist eine kommerziell erhältliche Software. Detailliert erläutert werden, welche Elemente von Web-Seiten von den beiden Programmen für Index-Einträge berücksichtigt werden, wie Index-Einträge und Querverweise erstellt und bearbeitet und wie die Register aktualisiert werden können.
    Zwei Kapitel behandeln die Vorgehensweise bei der Index-Erstellung sowie die vielfältigen Aspekte der Index-Gestaltung. Anhand vieler Beispiele werden die Besonderheiten, aber auch Parallelen zu Printregistern beleuchtet, z. B. bestehende und neu einzufügende Anker, Berücksichtigung verschiedener Seiten-Arten und -Formate, Umgang mit mehreren Locatorn pro Eintrag, Navigation innerhalb des Site Indexes. Das Schlusskapitel widmet sich den Business-Aspekten des Website-Indexing, auch aus Freelancer-Sicht. Erläutert werden z. B., welche Arten von Websites in Frage kommen und wie die Fortführung der Indexierung berücksichtigt wird. Der Index des Buches ist insgesamt von guter Qualität, wie man es von den Indexing-Büchern des Information Today-Verlages gewöhnt ist - ja sogar von exzellenter Qualität im Vergleich zu vielen unzureichenden Registern deutschsprachiger Fachbücher. Mit fünf Prozent Umfang im Verhältnis zur Anzahl der inhaltlichen Seiten hat der Index eine gute Standardlänge. Wesentliche Indexierungstechniken, wie Untereinträge, siehe- und siehe auch-Querverweise, vollständige Seitenbereichsangaben (d. h. ohne die wenig hilfreichen ff.-Angaben) kommen zum Einsatz. Einige Untereinträge tauchen allerdings nicht auch als Haupteintrag auf; so findet man z. B. "indexing rates" nur als Untereintrag des Haupteintrages "Business and index market". Die typographische und satztechnische Qualität des Registers ist ebenfalls gut, z. B. unterschiedliche Einrückungen von Untereinträgen und deren Zeilenumbrüchen.     Recycling eines Buchregisters Eine Index-Revision liegt dann vor, wenn das Register zu einer vorhergehenden Auflage eines Buches für die Neuauflage überarbeitet wird.     "Wie bereits in den Vorjahren hielt das Deutsche Netzwerk der Indexer (DNI) auf der Frankfurter Buchmesse 2006 sein Jahrestreffen ab - diesmal im Rahmen der Jahreskonferenz der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Informationswissenschaft und Informationspraxis (DGI). Im Mittelpunkt des Treffens stand eine offene Informationsveranstaltung mit Präsentationen zu Aspekten professioneller Registererstellung, die sehr gut besucht war. Neben Gästen aus der Publikationsbranche sowie von der DGI kamen Indexer vom Niederländischen Indexer-Netzwerk sowie spezielle Gäste aus den USA und Großbritannien. Jochen Fassbender vom DNI hielt einen Vortrag über grundsätzliche Thesen zur Lage des Indexing in Deutschland. Die im internationalen Vergleich noch erhebliche Defizite aufweisende Situation im deutschsprachigen Raum wurde durch vier Bereiche beleuchtet. 1. Registererstellung beschränkt sich keineswegs nur - wie immer noch weitläufig angenommen - auf das bloße Anstreichen von Textwörtern. Eine derartige Vorgehensweise führt zu konkordanzähnlichen Verzeichnissen statt zu Registern. Es geht vielmehr darum, das Gemeinte aus dem Text in Registereinträge umzusetzen und diese mit einem Beziehungsgeflecht zu verbinden. 2. Die Erstellung von Registern durch Autoren, Herausgebern oder gar Hilfskräften - womöglich kurz vor Ende eines Projektes - hat oft erhebliche Mängel zur Folge, da aus Fachkreisen immer wieder bestätigt wird, dass derartige Personengruppen - im Gegensatz zu professionellen Indexern - kaum über adäquates Fachwissen zur methodischen Vorgehensweise bei der Registererstellung noch über geeignete Indexing-Programme verfügen. 3. Moderne Registererstellung muss keineswegs mit Tools wie Word oder Layout-Programmen durchgeführt werden, deren Einsatz aus Indexer-Sicht z. T. erhebliche Nachteile mit sich bringt. Der weitaus größte Teil der weltweit arbeitenden Indexer arbeitet mit so genannter Dedicated Indexing Software, welche die vielfachen Aspekte bei der Registererstellung hervorragend unterstützt.
    4. Ferner wurde darauf aufmerksam gemacht, dass mit dem DNI auch im deutschsprachigen Raum eine Plattform für professionelles Indexing vorhanden ist, die sowohl hervorragende Kontakte zu den weltweit führenden angloamerikanischen Fachverbänden unterhält als auch Indexerinnen und Indexer für die Registererstellung für Fach- und Sachbücher als auch Periodika und Online-Medien bereitstellt. Maureen MacGlashan von der britischen Society of Indexers (SI) hielt einen Vortrag über die Fachzeitschrift The Indexer, das internationale Fachblatt der Indexing-Szene schlechthin. Maureen MacGlashan ist die derzeitige Hauptherausgeberin und erläuterte die Entstehungsgeschichte und Inhalte dieser bereits 1958 gegründeten Zeitschrift sowie deren Website www. theindexer.org, auf der ein Online-Index zur Verfügung steht. Ferner machte sie auf die im Oktober 2006 erscheinende Ausgabe aufmerksam, die als Schwerpunkt viele Aspekte des Indexing außerhalb des englischen Sprachraums beinhaltet. An dieser Ausgabe hatte auch das DNI als Gastherausgeber mitgearbeitet. Ein absolutes Debüt auf der Buchmesse war der Vortrag von Frances Lennie aus den USA, die mit CINDEX erstmals eine Dedicated Indexing Software vorstellte. Jede Person, die derartige Software kennen gelernt hat, weiß um den großen Unterschied zu der mühseligen Indexerstellung in Word. Frances Lennie zeigte, wie leicht und elegant Haupt- und Untereinträge sowie Querverweise mit CINDEX erstellt werden können. Die mit dieser Software viel effizienter erstellten Registereinträge lassen sich anschließend sogar in Word-Dokumente einbetten. Ein reichlich gedeckter Tisch mit InfoMaterial (z. B. Hefte von The Indexer, CDs mit einer Demo-Version von CINDEX) und der Hinweis, dass sowohl Mitglieder des DNI als auch die Society of Indexers Seminare zum professionellen Indexing anbieten, rundete die gelungene Veranstaltung ab.     Abstract
    Website-Indexing wurde in den 1990er Jahren wichtig, als Indexierer, Bibliothekare und Web-Manager mit verschiedenen Ansätzen experimentierten, einen besseren Zugang zu Informationen zu schaffen, die sie über das Internet anboten. Die Tools, mit denen Register erstellt werden, reichten von simpler HTML-Codierung bis zu HTML Indexer und anderer spezieller Software. Neue Indexe und Software-Produkte entstanden, aber viele Website-Register sind auch wieder verschwunden. Es werden die Gründe für die Erstellung von Website-Indexen dargestellt und Beispiele von Website-Indexen und anderen Zugangsoptionen erläutert, die in den letzten 15 Jahren entstanden, die aber nicht mehr zur Verfügung stehen. Es werden einige Vermutungen über die Gründe für diese Veränderungen angestellt.

    Abstract
    Die qualitativen Vorteile des Indexierens durch den Menschen werden nicht durch automatisches Indexieren verdrängt, aber bei besonders großen Projekten ist das Indexieren durch den Menschen nicht durchführbar. Eine Kosten-Nutzen-Analyse ist notwendig, um den praktischen Nutzen automatischer Indexierung mit der Wahrscheinlichkeit von Fehlern und deren Konsequenzen abzuwägen, die in beiden Ansätzen entstehen können. Das Integrieren von nicht-automatischer und automatischer Indexierung, das hier "Cyborg Indexing" genannt wird, kann Häufigkeit und Auswirkung von Fehlern beider Ansätze minimieren.

Jacobs): "This collection of articles by indexing practitioners, software designers and vendors is divided into five sections: Dedicated Software, Embedded Software, Online and Web Indexing Software, Database and Image Software, and Voice-activated, Automatic, and Machine-aided Software. This diversity is its strength. Part 1 is introduced by two chapters an choosing dedicated software, highlighting the issues involved and providing tips an evaluating requirements. The second chapter includes a fourteen page chart that analyzes the attributes of Authex Plus, three versions of CINDEX 1.5, MACREX 7, two versions of SKY Index (5.1 and 6.0) and wINDEX. The lasting value in this chart is its utility in making the prospective user aware of the various attributes/capabilities that are possible and that should be considered. The following chapters consist of 16 testimonials for these software packages, completed by a final chapter an specialized/customized software. The point is made that if a particular software function could increase your efficiency, it can probably be created. The chapters in Part 2, Embedded Software, go into a great deal more detail about how the programs work, and are less reviews than illustrations of functionality. Perhaps this is because they are not really stand-alones, but are functions within, or add-ons used with larger word processing or publishing programs. The software considered are Microsoft Word, FrameMaker, PageMaker, IndexTension 3.1.5 that is used with QuarkXPress, and Index Tools Professional and IXgen that are used with FrameMaker. The advantages and disadvantages of embedded indexing are made very clear, but the actual illustrations are difficult to follow if one has not worked at all with embedded software. Nonetheless, the section is valuable as it highlights issues and provides pointers an solutions to embedded indexing problems.
    Part 3, Online and Web Indexing Software, opens with a chapter in which the functionalities of HTML/Prep, HTML Indexer, and RoboHELP HTML Edition are compared. The following three chapters look at them individually. This section helps clarify the basic types of non-database web indexing - that used for back-of-the-book style indexes, and that used for online help indexes. The first chapter of Part 4, Database and image software, begins with a good discussion of what database indexing is, but falls to carry through with any listing of general characteristics, problems and attributes that should be considered when choosing database indexing software. It does include the results of an informal survey an the Yahoogroups database indexing site, as well as three short Gase studies an database indexing projects. The survey provides interesting information about freelancing, but it is not very useful if you are trying to gather information about different software. For example, the most common type of software used by those surveyed turns out to be word-processing software. This seems an odd/awkward choice, and it would have been helpful to know how and why the non-specialized software is being used. The survey serves as a snapshot of a particular segment of database indexing practice, but is not helpful if you are thinking about purchasing, adapting, or commissioning software. The three case studies give an idea of the complexity of database indexing and there is a helpful bibliography.
    A chapter an image indexing starts with a useful discussion of the elements of bibliographic description needed for visual materials and of the variations in the functioning and naming of functions in different software packaltes. Sample features are discussed in light of four different software systems: MAVIS, Convera Screening Room, CONTENTdm, and Virage speech and pattern recognition programs. The chapter concludes with an overview of what one has to consider when choosing a system. The last chapter in this section is an oddball one an creating a back-ofthe-book index using Microsoft Excel. The author warns: "It is not pretty, and it is not recommended" (p.209). A curiosity, but it should have been included as a counterpoint in the first part, not as part of the database indexing section. The final section begins with an excellent article an voice recognition software (Dragon Naturally Speaking Preferred), followed by a look at "automatic indexing" through a critique of Sonar Bookends Automatic Indexing Generator. The final two chapters deal with Data Harmony's Machine Aided Indexer; one of them refers specifically to a news content indexing system. In terms of scope, this reviewer would have liked to see thesaurus management software included since thesaurus management and the integration of thesauri with database indexing software are common and time-consuming concerns. There are also a few editorial glitches, such as the placement of the oddball article and inconsistent uses of fonts and caps (eg: VIRAGE and Virage), but achieving consistency with this many authors is, indeed, a difficult task. More serious is the fact that the index is inconsistent. It reads as if authors submitted their own keywords which were then harmonized, so that the level of indexing varies by chapter. For example, there is an entry for "controlled vocabulary" (p.265) (singular) with one locator, no cross-references. There is an entry for "thesaurus software" (p.274) with two locators, plus a separate one for "Thesaurus Master" (p.274) with three locators. There are also references to thesauri/ controlled vocabularies/taxonomies that are not mentioned in the index (e.g., the section Thesaurus management an p.204). This is sad. All too often indexing texts have poor indexes, I suppose because we are as prone to having to work under time pressures as the rest of the authors and editors in the world. But a good index that meets basic criteria should be a highlight in any book related to indexing. Overall this is a useful, if uneven, collection of articles written over the past few years. Because of the great variation between articles both in subject and in approach, there is something for everyone. The collection will be interesting to anyone who wants to be aware of how indexing software works and what it can do. I also definitely recommend it for information science teaching collections since the explanations of the software carry implicit in them descriptions of how the indexing process itself is approached. However, the book's utility as a guide to purchasing choices is limited because of the unevenness; the vendor-written articles and testimonials are interesting and can certainly be helpful, but there are not nearly enough objective reviews.     Comments on Douglas Hofstadter's index to his book 'Le ton beau de Marot: in praise of the music of language'. Hofstadter took charge of the book design, typography, typesetting and copy-editing, and also compiled the index which covers 23 pages of 3 columnes and is set in a practically illegible 4-point. Although the index breaks all the rules of indexing, it is a masterly creation showing the author's industry, exhuberance and wit.
