    Abstract
On 19 Aug 94 a group of readers' advisers met to discuss their problems in Utrecht Provincial Central Library in the Netherlands. The panel felt that too much emphasis had been placed on libraries' information role and that more effort should be devoted to recreational reading through organising lectures and reading groups. It was felt that training sessions should be organised and a network created for the exchange of ideas

    Abstract
Ways of classifying adult fiction vary from library to library in the absence of a standard or universal system. Describes a questionnaire survey of 67 libraries which attempted to identify the various method used by libraries in classifying, arranging and displaying their adult fiction collections. Stresses the need for an evaluation of the methods used and to explore user needs, genre categories, and techniques used by bookstores

    Abstract
Knowledge organization (KO) research has been traditionally more oriented toward scientific documents. However, narrative, one of the oldest kinds of literature genre, is increasingly important in the multimedia culture of today, and is getting more important in applied social sciences as business administration, advertising, public relations, politics or education. This paper explores the key facets for KO in the field building on literature theory and faceted classification theory.

    Abstract
Public libraries offer fiction readers various approaches to retrieve reading matter: shelving systems that facilityte browsing, knowledgable staff bibliographic aids and also user training and reader guidance. Despite these alternatives, readers often experience difficulty in identifying relevant fiction and no single factor can be isolated as the main cause. Classifies shelving systems and bibliographic aids do not take into account the fiction reader's approach. The nature of fiction does not allow for content to be moulded into any formal knowledge structure. The Analysis and Mediation of Publications (AMP) classification scheme, developed in Denmark, is a fiction classification scheme based on the relation between content and needs of fiction readers

    Abstract

    Abstract
Information retrieval and exploration of work domains through databases and integrated information systems has become increasingly important in many modern work settings (as well as in libraries). The problem space of the users is defined on occasion by the dynamically changing requirements from their tasks and goals. it is argued that IR system design should be based on an analysis of the properties of the work domain, the task situation and the user characteristics. The paper describes a general framework for IR system design that has been used in the design of a library system. A special problem identified from use of the framework in domain analysis of fiction retrieval is treated in more detail: mapping the authors' domain structures to the domain structures expressed in users' needs in indexing and representation of fiction

    Abstract
This paper provides an introduction to an ongoing research project that aims to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency with which users discover and access folktales. Through systematic and rigorous research combining task analysis with facet analysis, the researchers intend to develop an enhanced bibliographic record prototype. The focus of the paper, however, is to discuss results from the preliminary phase of this project. In particular it will describe the information tasks, information seeking obstacles, and desired features for a discovery and access tool related to folktales for a group of scholarly users of folktales. Additionally the paper will address some of the bibliographic, cultural, and intellectual facets derived from a sample of folktale resources. Finally it proposes a provisional model for enhanced bibliographic records, comparing it with the one implicit in extant bibliographic discovery and access tools.

    Abstract
    Content
"Was ist Belletristik?

    Abstract

    Abstract
Decribes the BookHouse, a system for the retrieval and indexing of fiction and non fiction literature developed for public and school libraries though cooperation between library and information science professionals. Discusses 3 aspects of the system: domain characteristic; task analysis; and user characteristics. Outlines the framework underlying the collection of field data with special emphasis on the work involved in transforming the empirical field studies of user behaviour in the library into computer system specifications and subsequent design of a retrieval system providing subject access to fiction. Describes a few of the many indexing policies, rules and practices which evolved for concept identification and book descriptions as well as the functionality and associated displays of the system for supporting the retrieval and indexing of fiction

    Abstract

    Abstract

    Abstract
Where the institutionalised study of literature goes, knowledge organisation (KO) approaches to fictional works tend to follow. At the level of generic labelling and categorisation, theoretical conventions of the professional literary critical world appear to be adopted by the information science world, for example in the generic categorisation undertaken by the British National Bibliography. This paper, which is concerned with the epistemological assumptions underpinning fiction categorisation, explores current genre theory and argues for an approach to the understanding of genre, and ultimately the description of genre, that is based on a cultural-materialist, historical world-view. In addition, a novel framework for a genre mapping KO tool is described. Fiction information retrieval is still a fairly underdeveloped area of information science. There have been some developments, mainly in the 1980s and 1990s, which focused on user warrant as the basis for developing retrieval systems (e.g. Pejtersen 1992) but there is still space for a generic approach which can identify and describe novels at a micro-level while situating them within a broader systems view. In the current information retrieval context, any such tool, which would be developed for web use, should incorporate both informational fields and affective dimension indexing in the form of user derived tagging.

    Abstract
Several systems for the classification of fiction have been proposed to date, but experience shows that such classification partially depends on the culture and literary education in specific countries. Slovenian public libraries have traditionally used UDC as the only subject information on belles-lettres. Research has shown that users would prefer richer subject information. Therefore an attempt was made to enhance UDC by adding subject information, that should be helpful to users and librarians. The newly proposed Alternative Model system contains lists of verbal and alpha-numerical denotations for the basic groups of belles-lettres book material (main-genres: lyrics, drama, epics) and all other categorical criteria (language of the original literary work, literature to which the work belongs, genre, sub-genre) and half-categorical (accessibility of the content of literary works, origin within the periods of literary history, the century in which the literary work was written, the rhythm of the language). All these lists are available, but not included in this paper. The idea of the Alternative Model system is to show the possibilities of making the classification of belles-lettres in libraries more helpful, efficient and exact.
