- Abstract
- Eine der wesentlichen Aufgaben als Fachreferent*in ist die inhaltliche Erschließung der neuerworbenen Literatur, sowie die Begutachtung und Auswahl der neu erschienenen Werke in den jeweiligen Fachgebieten hinsichtlich der Relevanz für die eigenen Sammlungen gemäß dem Sammlungsprofil der TU Wien Bibliothek. Im Zuge der Corona-Krise wurde die herkömmliche Arbeitsweise in der Sacherschließung beeinträchtigt, und es haben sich neue Herausforderungen, aber auch Möglichkeiten ergeben. Neben der fehlenden Autopsie der Literatur leidet auch die Sichtung und Erwerbung neuer Literatur unter der physischen Abwesenheit vom Arbeitsplatz bzw. der entsprechenden technischen Infrastruktur. Auch der persönliche Austausch mit den Kolleg*innen wurde deutlich erschwert. Neben den Schwierigkeiten wurden aber auch die neuen Handlungsoptionen auf beruflicher und individueller Ebene positiv gesehen. In dem Artikel werden unsere individuellen Erfahrungen an der TU Wien Bibliothek sowie Ausblicke in die Zukunft wiedergegeben.

- Abstract
- Als Erfinder des «Allgemeinen» gilt, gemäß dem Bericht des Aristoteles und seit diesem Bericht, Sokrates. Er ist es, der nicht mehr danach suchte, woraus ein Ding zu dem geworden ist, was es ist, oder wie es entstanden ist, sondern danach, «was [ein Ding] ist», und somit ist Sokrates der erste gewesen, der die Herausarbeitung des Allgemeinen (?a?????) forderte und mit seinen Fragen seine Gesprächspartner zu dieser Herausarbeitung trieb bzw. lockte; die Definition (???sµ??) war das Ziel des sokratischen Gesprächs, und die sokratische Aporie war das Vehikel.

- Abstract
- Das Problem der Wahrnehmung und Darstellung von Wahrheit durch die Medien führt zu vier zentralen Fragen: Wie viel Wahrheit gibt es in der Welt, über die Journalisten berichten müssen? Wie ermittelt oder recherchiert man diese Wahrheit? Wie trennt man die Spreu vom Weizen? Und wie geht man als Journalist mit dem um, was man als Wahrheit erkannt hat oder erkannt zu haben glaubt? Hier gibt es ganz offensichtlich eine Parallele zwischen Journalisten und Wissenschaftlern. Journalisten und Wissenschaftler brauchen erstens Hypothesen, zweitens geeignete Hypothesentests, drittens ein gutes Abgrenzungs-Kriterium und viertens Verfahren, um die erkannten Sachverhalte auf angemessene Weise für eine Kommunikation mit anderen zu repräsentieren, das heißt sie darzustellen. Es gibt zwei große Unterschiede zwischen Journalisten und Wissenschaftlern: Journalisten sind in der Regel auf raum-zeitlich begrenzte Aussagen aus, Wissenschaftler in der Regel auf raumzeitlich unbegrenzte Gesetze. Aber diese Unterschiede sind fließend, weil Wissenschaftler raum-zeitlich begrenzte Aussagen brauchen, um ihre All-Aussagen zu überprüfen, und Journalisten sich immer häufiger auf das Feld der allgemeinen Gesetzes-Aussagen wagen oder doch zumindest Kausalinterpretationen für soziale Phänomene anbieten. Der zweite Unterschied besteht darin, dass die Wissenschaft weitgehend professionalisiert ist (zumindest gilt dies uneingeschränkt für die Naturwissenschaften und die Medizin), was ihr relativ klare Abgrenzungs- und Güte-Kriterien beschert hat. Diese fehlen weitgehend im Journalismus.

- Abstract
- Die Digitale Bibliothek hat viele Gesichter und viele Funktionen, Kein des Begriffs ist die Aufbereitung, Zugänglichkeit und Verarbeitung von digitalen - aber auch nichtdigitalen - Quellen. Das Management von elektronischen Informationsressourcen birgt neue Strukturen, neue Paradigmen, neue Arbeitsweisen und neue Informationsvermittlungsmethoden. Noch einer Übersicht über die Begriffsbestimmung "Digitale Bibliothek" werden die Forschungsprogramme und Förderansätze hinsichtlich digitaler Bibliotheksprojekte in den USA, Europa, Asien und Ozeanien dargestellt. Einzelne Aspekte der digitalen Bibliothek werden dann näher erläutert wie die Architektur der digitalen Bibliothek, Metadaten, Dokumentenerstellung, Interoperability, Gateways - Clearinghouses etc., Paradigmenverschiebung, elektronische Zeitschriften, Informationsvermittlung, Abrechungsmodalitäten, Archivierung etc. Weiterhin wird überlegt, was die künftigen Implikationen der Informationseuphorie bzw des "dato smog" sind, wie der Wissenschaftlerarbeitsplatz aussieht und weiche Rolle Bibliothek und Bibliothekare in der Informationsversorgung künftig haben

- Abstract
- Ontologien werden eingesetzt, um durch semantische Fundierung insbesondere für das Dokumentenretrieval eine grundlegend bessere Basis zu haben, als dies gegenwärtiger Stand der Technik ist. Vorgestellt wird eine an der FH Darmstadt entwickelte und eingesetzte Ontologie, die den Gegenstandsbereich Hochschule sowohl breit abdecken und gleichzeitig differenziert semantisch beschreiben soll. Das Problem der semantischen Suche besteht nun darin, dass sie für Informationssuchende so einfach wie bei gängigen Suchmaschinen zu nutzen sein soll, und gleichzeitig auf der Grundlage des aufwendigen Informationsmodells hochwertige Ergebnisse liefern muss. Es wird beschrieben, welche Möglichkeiten die verwendete Software K-Infinity bereitstellt und mit welchem Konzept diese Möglichkeiten für eine semantische Suche nach Dokumenten und anderen Informationseinheiten (Personen, Veranstaltungen, Projekte etc.) eingesetzt werden.

- Abstract
- Die Situation der mathematischen Literatur ist geprägt durch Preissteigerungen, die nun - wie vorher schon andere naturwissenschaftliche Fächer - auch die Mathematik erreicht haben. Diese Situation macht es vielen Bibliotheken immer schwerer, die Zahl der Zeitschriftenabonnements aufrecht zu erhalten und eine ausreichende Anzahl relevanter Monographien zu kaufen. Die Situation ist aber auch geprägt durch eine Zunahme der Vielfalt in der Erscheinungsform mathematischer Literatur und der Nachweisinstrumente. Dies bringt manche Änderung mit sich; manchmal mehr Komfort, hin und wieder auch heue Probleme. In diesem Beitrag soll die vor einiger Zeit an anderer Stelle begonnene Berichterstattung über die fachbibliographische Situation auf dem Gebiet der Mathematik fortgesetzt und ein Überblick bis zum Jahre 1985 gegeben werden. Leider hat sich an dem schon damals beklagten Zustand der mangelnden Berichterstattung über die fachbibliographische Situation in den Naturwissenschaften bis heute nichts geändert. So gibt es zwar die vorzügliche Rubrik von Klaus Schreiber in der Zeitschrift für Bibliothekswesen und Bibliographie, die Naturwissenschaften sind dort aber nicht überrepräsentiert, und auch an anderer Stelle ist kein Ersatz in Sicht; ein angesichts rascher Änderungen auf manchem Gebiet bedauerlicher Zustand. Neben den Neuerungen bei den bekannten Referateorganen sollen die seit einiger Zeit nunmehr auch für die Mathematik online zu recherchierenden Datenbanken erwähnt werden. Berücksichtigen wollen wir diesmal auch die Didaktik der Mathematik und die Statistik. Nicht berücksichtigt werden soll hingegen die Informatik; dieses in den letzten Jahren stark expandierende Gebiet mit einer Reihe von Besonderheiten in der fachlich relevanten Literatur (Produkt-Literatur, Firmenschriften, Software-Bibliotheken u.a.) verdient eine eigene Darstellung. Darüberhinaus wollen wir versuchen, einige weitere nützliche Hinweise für den Umgang mit mathematischer Literatur zu geben.

- Abstract
- Die biomedizinische Forschung hat ein Kommunikationsproblem. Um die Ergebnisse ihrer Arbeit darzustellen, greifen einzelne Forschergruppen auf unterschiedliche und oft inkompatible Terminologien zurück. Für den Fortschritt der modernen Biomedizin ist die Integration dieser Ergebnisse jedoch unabdingbar. Die Informatik hat versucht, die allerorten aus inkompatiblen Terminologien erwachsenden Hindernisse mittels einer übergreifenden Referenztaxonomie zu überwinden, in die die vielen verschiedenen Terminologien nur einmal übersetzt werden müssten. Als Lingua franca der Terminologie- und Datenbankintegration würde diese Referenztaxonomie automatisch die Kompatibilität aller auf ihrer Grundlage abgestimmten Informationsressourcen sicherstellen. Informatiker entlehnten für das vorgeschlagene zentrale Klassifikationssystem aus der Philosophie den Terminus "Ontologie" - ohne zu ahnen, dass das Entwickeln dieser Ontologie zahlreiche in der philosophischen Ontologie seit langem diskutierte Fragen erneut aufwerfen würde. Das Institut für formale Ontologie und medizinische Informationswissenschaft (IFOMIS)* in Leipzig und das belgischUS-amerikanische Softwareunternehmen Language & Computing (L&C) kooperieren, um eine Lösung für die speziellen Probleme, die sich bei der Integration medizinischer Terminologien ergeben, zu erarbeiten. Die Ontologie fließt in Software-Werkzeuge für die Verarbeitung medizinischer Texte ein und wird so den praktischen Anforderungen auf die Wirklichkeit gerichteten Handelns ausgesetzt. Dadurch geschieht etwas in der Philosophiegeschichte Einmaliges: Die Leistungsfähigkeit einer philosophischen Theorie wird empirisch überprüft.
