    Abstract
Der Autor, Physikprofessor und Leiter des Washingtoner Büros der American Physical Society, äußert sich seit Jahren einmal die Woche in einer Intemet-Kolumne namens "What's New" zu aktuellen Themen der Wissenschaftspolitik (http://www.aps.org/WN/), mit stets demselben sorgfältig formulierten Satz im "Kleingedruckten": ,Opinions are the author's and are not necessarily shared by the American Physical Society, but they should be."

    Abstract

    Abstract

Our profession may not be in crisis, but we certainly are challenged by the Internet as almost no other profession is. The Internet is ,free`, and libraries are expensive: we are cost centers, not profit centers. It's difficult to quantify the value we give back" (239).
