- Abstract
- Unser Bild von der Welt hat sich innerhalb weniger Jahrzehnte durch die Erkenntnisse der modernen Naturwissenschaft und die Fortschritte auf technologischem Gebiet schneller und radikaler verändert als je zuvor in der Geschichte. Unsere Wirklichkeitserfahrung ist eine andere geworden, die Basis unserer Welt-Sicht, das rationale, kausal-analytische Denken, ist in Frage gestellt, die als sakrosankt betrachtete kartesianische Trennung von Geist und Natur, Wissenschaft und Glauben überholt. In einem solchen Moment des geistigen Umbruchs sind Physiker und Biologen, Philosophen und Sozialwissenschaftler gleichermaßen gefordert, an der Grundlegung eines neuen Verständnisses von Mensch und Natur, Geist und Materie mitzuarbeiten. Denn eine Synthese unseres Wissens, die zu einer sinnstiftenden Einheit und Ganzheit unserer Erfahrungen führen soll, muß sich zunächst auf die Erkenntnisse der Einzelwissenschaften stützen, sollte auch andere Denktraditionen, wie etwa die der fernöstlichen Spiritualität und Weltweisheit, miteinbeziehen und die fundamentalen Einsichten der christlich-abendländischen Philosophie und Ethik nicht aus dem Auge verlieren.
Die auf dem Kongreß «Geist und Natur» in Hannover zusammengekommenen Wissenschaftler aller Disziplinen - darunter einige Nobelpreisträger - haben sich dieser Aufgabe gestellt und versucht, aus ihren unterschiedlichen Denkansätzen heraus neue, die Probleme unserer Zeit berücksichtigende Antworten auf die «letzten Fragen» zu finden wie: Was ist Geist? Was ist Natur, Materie? Was ist Bewußtsein? Was ist Zeit? Was ist Wirklichkeit? Aber nicht weniger intensiv wurden auch ganz konkrete Möglichkeiten zum Beispiel einer neuen ökologischen Ethik, einer Neuordnung der Weltwirtschaft und neuer Formen des Dialogs zwischen den Kulturen erwogen. Die Vorträge - oft von den bedeutendsten Vertretern ihres Fachgebiets gehalten - sind sowohl Bestandsaufnahme unserer gegenwärtigen geistigen und gesellschaftlichen Situation wie auch richtungweisend für die Zukunft. Dieser Band enthält die wichtigsten, interessantesten Beiträge zu dieser Diskussion, so daß sich dem Leser damit ein faszinierendes Kaleidoskop des heutigen Wissens und Denkens bietet.

- Abstract
- Die Rolle der Symmetrie als Werkzeug der Orientierung des Menschen in Raum und Zeit ist in allen Epochen und Zivilisationen aufzuspüren. Sowohl das natur- und geisteswissenschaftliche Denken als auch die Künste und die Prinzipien menschlicher Handelns neigen dazu, sich in Strukturen symmetrischer Natur auszuformen. Zum Beispiel hat die zeitgenössische Physik, mit dem Rüstzeug der modernen Mathematik versehen, den Symmetriebegriff ins Zentrum des Interesses gerückt. Die in den letzten Jahren so erfolgreichen Bemühungen um eine Vereinheitlichung der Grundkräfte der Natur, die damit verbundene tiefe Einsicht in den Kosmos der Elementarteilchen und die daraus hervorgegangenen kosmologischen Erkenntnisse sind beeindruckende Belege für die Wirklichkeit des Symmetrieprinzips. - Abstract
- Die Situation der mathematischen Literatur ist geprägt durch Preissteigerungen, die nun - wie vorher schon andere naturwissenschaftliche Fächer - auch die Mathematik erreicht haben. Diese Situation macht es vielen Bibliotheken immer schwerer, die Zahl der Zeitschriftenabonnements aufrecht zu erhalten und eine ausreichende Anzahl relevanter Monographien zu kaufen. Die Situation ist aber auch geprägt durch eine Zunahme der Vielfalt in der Erscheinungsform mathematischer Literatur und der Nachweisinstrumente. Dies bringt manche Änderung mit sich; manchmal mehr Komfort, hin und wieder auch heue Probleme. In diesem Beitrag soll die vor einiger Zeit an anderer Stelle begonnene Berichterstattung über die fachbibliographische Situation auf dem Gebiet der Mathematik fortgesetzt und ein Überblick bis zum Jahre 1985 gegeben werden. Leider hat sich an dem schon damals beklagten Zustand der mangelnden Berichterstattung über die fachbibliographische Situation in den Naturwissenschaften bis heute nichts geändert. So gibt es zwar die vorzügliche Rubrik von Klaus Schreiber in der Zeitschrift für Bibliothekswesen und Bibliographie, die Naturwissenschaften sind dort aber nicht überrepräsentiert, und auch an anderer Stelle ist kein Ersatz in Sicht; ein angesichts rascher Änderungen auf manchem Gebiet bedauerlicher Zustand. Neben den Neuerungen bei den bekannten Referateorganen sollen die seit einiger Zeit nunmehr auch für die Mathematik online zu recherchierenden Datenbanken erwähnt werden. Berücksichtigen wollen wir diesmal auch die Didaktik der Mathematik und die Statistik. Nicht berücksichtigt werden soll hingegen die Informatik; dieses in den letzten Jahren stark expandierende Gebiet mit einer Reihe von Besonderheiten in der fachlich relevanten Literatur (Produkt-Literatur, Firmenschriften, Software-Bibliotheken u.a.) verdient eine eigene Darstellung. - Abstract
- Seitdem C. P. Snow - Physiker und Romancier zugleich - 1959 zum ersten Mal von den »zwei Kulturen« sprach, ist dieses Wort zu einem festen Begriff geworden. Die »zwei Kulturen« - das sind die zwei Welten der Geisteswissenschaft und Literatur einerseits, der Naturwissenschaft und Technik andererseits, zwischen denen sich eine Kluft gegenseitigen Nichtverstehens aufgetan hat. Ignoranz und Spezialisierung auf beiden Seiten haben zuweilen sogar eine gewisse Feindseligkeit entstehen lassen. Mit Recht hält Snow diese Situation für ein wichtiges Problem des Westens, für politisch gefährlich, und zwar schon aus dem Grunde, weil die Geisteswissenschaftler und Politiker nicht mehr wissen, ob Ratschläge der Naturwissenschaftler richtig oder falsch sind. Die These von den zwei Kulturen fand ein weltweites Echo und entfachte eine Diskussion, in der das Problem, das Snow als sein eigenes Problem empfunden hat, sich immer mehr auf das Verhältnis der Literatur zur »naturwissenschaftlichen Revolution« zuspitzte. Obwohl nämlich Snow beiden Kulturen ihre Einseitigkeit vorwirft, macht er letztlich doch die literarische Intelligenz, die er fortschrittsfeindlich und im eigentlichen Sinn antiintellektuell nennt, für die Isolierung verantwortlich. Dieser Band enthält den vollständigen Text der berühmten Vorlesung Snows und seinen >Nachtrag< von 1963, in dem er sich mit der Kritik auseinandersetzt, außerdem zwölf Beiträge zur Diskussion aus dem angloamerikanischen und deutschen Bereich, die das Problem von den verschiedensten Seiten aus angehen sowie ein aktuelles Vorwort des Herausgebers.

- Abstract
- Die Phänomenologie gehört zur breiten Bewegung in den Jahrzehnten um die letzte Jahrhundertwende, die es auf die Ergänzung der Kategorien und Gesetze der klassischen Logik und der klassischen Physik durch zusätzliche Kategorien und Gesetze abgesehen hatte. Ein Hauptanliegen der Phänomenologie ist die Beachtung der Abhängigkeit der Erfahrung von der Einstellung des Beobachters, von dessen Theorie bzw. dessen Kode. Die Phänomenologie betont dabei die Bedeutung der natürlichen, vorwissenschaftlichen, »lebensweltlichen« Kategorien und Gesetze der Erfahrung. Entsprechend ist eines ihrer Ziele die Rekonstruktion der Erfahrung und des Verstehens, so wie sie vom Menschen selbst »erlebt« werden, und nicht einfach nur eine prinzipiell mögliche alternative Simulation seiner Leistungen mittels Kategorien und Gesetze, die zwar wissenschaftstheoretischen Idealen genügen, dem menschlichen Erleben jedoch fremd sind.
Ein anderes Anliegen ist die Ersetzung von atomistischen, an sich neutralen, beziehungs- und sinnlosen Daten als Ausgangsmaterial der menschlichen Leistungen durch eine ganzheitliche Auffassung der Ausgangsphänomene, der Beachtung ihrer hierarchischen Ordnung, ihres prinzipiell relationalen Charakters und der Abhängigkeit der Relationen vom Sinn der Teilgegebenheiten im Ganzen, in das sie eingebettet sind, und partiell auch von deren Beschaffenheit, von deren »Stofflichkeit- (»Substanz«). Hierher gehört auch die Ablösung des linearen, mechanistischen Kausalnexus zwischen den einzelnen Daten durch zirkuläre, teleologische Formen der Verursachung. Entsprechend ist die Ablösung der behavioristischen Modelle des menschlichen Verhaltens durch computerwissenschaftliche und informationstheoretische Modelle prinzipiell als eine phänomenologische Wende hin zu einer, den formalen Kategorien (Ziel, Plan, Signal, Selektion, Koordination usw.) nach, den traditionellen Naturwissenschaften fremden, humanwissenschaftlichen Einstellung zu begrüßen. Eine andere Frage ist, ob die bisher entwikkelten Computer- und informationstechnischen Modelle ausreichen, um den menschlichen Leistungen äquivalente Leistungen zu erbringen und vor allem, um die Leistungsprozesse des menschlichen Gehirns und Geistes Schritt für Schritt zu rekonstruieren.

- Abstract
- Dieses Buch bringt eine Einführung in die Katalogisierung für öffentliche Bibliotheken, der zweiten Auflage liegt die autorisierte Ausgabe der "Regeln für öffentliche Bibliotheken, RAK-ÖB" von 1986 zugrunde. Der Stoff wird gemäß dem Prinzip, das die Autorin in ihrer praktischen Arbeit verwendet hat, dargestellt: 1) Voranstellung der theoretischen Grundlagen; diese sind durch viele Beispiele erläutert; 2) praktische Beispiele anhand von kopierten Haupttitelseiten mit umfangreichen Erläuterungen und Angabe der betreffenden Paragraphen. Die Beispiele zur Theorie und auch die praktischen Beispiele wurden weitgehend aus dem Bestand einer typischen öffentlichen Bibliothek ausgewählt. Neben den allgemeinen RAK-ÖB-Bestimmungen werden auch die Alternativregeln, die deutschsprachige Ansetzungen der Namen und Sachtitel zulassen, berücksichtigt. Die zweite Auflage wurde auf die Ausgabe von 1986 der Regeln ausgerichtet, dadurch ergaben sich Änderungen und Erweiterungen. Auch ein Abschnitt über die Katalogisierung von Bilderbüchern wurde aufgenommen. Ziel des Buches ist die Einführung der Bibliothekare der öffentlichen Bibliotheken in das neue Regelwerk. Es ist sowohl für Studenten als auch für Bibliothekare, die sich den Stoff selbst aneignen wollen, gedacht. Außerdem vermittelt das Buch den Bibliothekaren, die sich entweder für die allgemeinen RAK-ÖB-Regeln oder die Alternativregeln entscheiden müssen, einen Überblick, wo die Alternativregeln Anwendung finden und wieviel einfacher und praxisnäher sie sind.

- Abstract
- Bei der Pilotstudie DB-Thesaurus ging es um die Untersuchung der Art und Form der von der Deutschen Bibliothek für ihre Inhaltserschließung verwendeten Schlagwörter und ihre Eignung als Elemente eines allgemeinen Thesaurus für Bibliotheken. Der Abschlußbericht (Arbeits- und Ergebnisbericht) beantwortet die in der Ausschreibung ausgesprochenen Fragen bezgl. der Möglichkeiten und Grundprinzipien eines solchen Thesaurus der DB-Schlagwörter, insbesondere auch seiner Struktur (Umfassung der Fachgebeiete, Anzahl der Hauptgruppen, Erschließungstiefe), seiner Relationsarten (begriffliche und terminologische), der Möglichkeiten der Wortschatzbegrenzung, der Behandlung von Eigennamen und der Möglichkeiten der Terminologiekontrolle. Die Untersuchung ergab, daß sich die SW der DB als Thesauruselemente eignen, daß diese aber um viele Begriffe ergänzt werden müssen, die teilweise aus dem Schatz der DB-Verweisungen gewonnen werden könnten, wenn man einen systematisch angelegten, allgemeinen Thesaurus auf dieser Basis erstellen will. Unter den Anlagen befindet sich als Beispiel dafür, daß DB-Schlag- und Verweisungswörter zur Thesauruserstellung herangezogen werden können, ein sog. Sportthesaurus, der nur durch einige fehlende Oberbegriffe ergänzt wurde. Der gesamte systematische Teil ist im alphabetischen Teil enthalten. Auf die Unterscheidung der Abstraktionsrelation von der Bestandsrelation wurde auch im alphabetischen Teil besonderer Wert gelegt
